Objective : In order to study effects of ${\lceil}Persicae\;Semen{\rfloor}$ on the hyperlipidemia rats induced by Triton WR, we have made hyperlipidemia rats by administering Triton WR-1339 for 3 days, then have administered. The results were summerized as follows : 1. The Total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, Free fatty acid, phospholipid and CRF(Cardiak Risk Factor) by hypercholesteremic rats injected by Triton WR-1339 of the herb-Acupuncture group were decreased as compared with those of the control group, especialy hypercholesteremic rats injected by Triton WR- 1339 of the herb-Acupuncture+Acupuncture group were some more decreased as compared with those of the control group. 2. The HDL-cholesterol by hypercholesteremic rats injected by Trion WR -1339 of the herb-Acupuncture group were increased as compeared those of control group, especialy hypercholesteremic rats injected by Triton WR-1339 of the herb-Acupuncture+Acupuncture group were some more increased as compared with those of the control group. According to the above results, Persicae Semen showed inhibition on decrease of serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and phosholipid contents as well as inhibition on increase of HDL-cholesterol contents in hyperlipidemia.
In order to estimate the effects of Eucommiae Cortex, which is one of the most important herb medicines used for invigorating the liver and kidney and strengthening ones and muscles, fetus-soothing etc., this experiment was conducted the quantitative analysis of geniposidic acid and geniposide by HPLC, and the analgesic effects of mice, the lipid metabolism of rats, the catecholamine concentration in the brain and the plsma of rats stressed by immobilization. The results obtained are as follows. 1. The contents of geniposidic acid and geniposide were 22.3mg/g, 5.4mg/g in Eucommiae Cortex without processing, and 119.8mg, 10.4mg/g in Eucommiae Cortex fried with salts. 2. In analgesic effects of mice, there were all significant in Eucommiae Cortex without processing and Eucommiae Cortex fried with salts. 3. In the effects of lipid metabolism of rats, there were not significant on the change of organ weight and the level of serum total lipid and total cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid, HDL-cholesterol. But, there were significant on the level of free fatty acid. 4. In tile effects of the catecholamine concentration in the brain and the plsma of rats stressed by immobilization, there were all significant in Eucommiae Cortex without processing and Eucommiae Cortex fried with salts, especially in case of norepinephrine. From the results mentioned above, there were significant on the analgesic effects of mice, and the catecholamine concentration in the brain and the plsma of rats stressed by immobilization. And there were different from Eucommiae Cortex without processing and Eucommiae Cortex fried with salts in the contents of geniposidic acid and geniposide. These results are relative to invigorating the liver and kidney and strengthening ones and muscles, and fetus-soothing, therefore when we use Eucommiae Cortex, it is more desirable to use Eucommiae Cortex with processing.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of water-soluble extract from roasted chicory on the lipid metabolism and oxidative stress in male Sprague-Dawley rats. The experimental groups were divided into three groups ; the normal group, the cholesterol group and the chicory group. Roasted chicory extract was supplemented at 5.0% (w/w) level in the cholesterol diet. Concentration of total cholesterol in serum was significantly higher in the cholesterol group than in the normal group, but this increase in the cholesterol group was significantly decreased by the cholesterol diet supplemented with chicory extract. Concentration of HDL-cholesterol in serum was significantly lower in the cholesterol group than in the normal group, but this decrease in the cholesterol group tended to increase in the chicory group. However, concentrations of triglyceride, phospholipid and nonesterified fatty acid in serum were not significantly different among the groups. Concentrations of triglyceride and cholesterol in liver were significantly higher in the cholesterol and chicory groups than in the normal group. Feces weight and the excretion of cholesterol and bile acid into feces were significantly higher in the chicory group than in other groups. Concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in homogenates and microsomal fractions of liver were not significantly different among the groups. On the other hand, concentration of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) as an useful marker of oxidative stress in urine was lower in the chicory group than in other groups. Concentration of serum glucose was signnificantly lower in the cholesterol group than in the normal group, but that of the chicory group was significantly higher than in the normal group. These results demonstrated that dietary chicory extract exerted the decreasing effect of cholesterol level and oxidative stress in cholesteral-fed rats.

This experiment was carried out to investigate variation of plasma lipid level and liver peroxide level(Thiobarbituric acid, T.B.A) caused by tube feeding of Pteridium sp. extracts for seven weeks in rats. A seven week rat's plasma triacylglyceride (T.G.) level showed remarkably higher than that of the control group and that of the three week rats. On the other hand, no remarkable differences of plasma phospholipid, free fatty acid and thiobarbituric acid level have been recognized. Liver homogenate lipid peroxides value of seven week feeding rats showed remarkably higher level compared with that of the control group and the three weeks rats. So it could not be agreed that short time feeding of Pteridium sp. plant or even it's concentrated extracts influenced to the levels of liver homogenate lipid peroxides, plasma lipids and its peroxides.

This study was designed to observe the effects of feeding the mixed oils of the sardine oil containing n-3 EPA, DHA and the safflower oil which is rich in n-6 linoleic acid on the improvement of the lipids and enzyme activities of serum in rats. Experimental oils mixed with 16% butter (control group) and 8% butter + 8% olive oil, 8% butter and various level of sardine and safflower oils were administered to the male rats of the Sprague Dawley for 4 weeks. The activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST, EC 2.6.1.1), alanine aminotransferase (ALT, EC 2.6.1.2), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH, EC 1.1.1.27) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP, EC 3.1.3.1) in serum were significantly decreased in the all experimental groups than in the control groups, and activities of ALT and LDH were remarkably lower in the group 5 (4% sardine 0il + 4% safflower oil). Concentrations of total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol in serum were lower in the other groups than in the dontrol groups, and particularly, lowest in the group 5. Concentrations of LDL, LDL-cholesterol, phospholipid and triglyceride in serum were lower in the all experimental groups than in the control group. Concentrations to total cholesterol and cholesteryl ester in serum were lowest in the group 5. The ratio of cholesteryl ester to total cholesterol was remarkably high in the control group, while group 2 (8% olive oil) was the lowest. From this results, the feeding equal quantity mixed oil with n-3 PUFA rich sardine oil and n-6 PUFA rich safflower oil were effective on the improvement of the lipid composition in the serum. It might be due to the effects of appropriate ratios of P/S, 0.85 and n-6/n-3P, 2.85 in the test lipids.

In this study, we examined the effects of dietary 1,3-diacylglycerol (DG) compared to conventional triacylglycerol (TG) oil on the postprandial response of total and chylomicron TG, glucose, insulin, and free fatty acid (FFA). This study was conducted using a cross-over design. Ninety subjects participated in the high-fat meal tolerance test where they were randomly assigned to consume two experimental sandwiches containing mayonnaise with TG or DG oil with a seven-day interval. Blood samples were collected before ingestion and at 2, 3, 4 and 6 hr time point after ingestion and analyzed for total and chylomicron TG, glucose, insulin, FFA and phospholipid fatty acid composition. Both TG and DG ingestion had similar effects on postprandial TG response, but a different response from chylomicron TG. Compared with the TG group, TG levels were significantly lower only at 6 hr time point in the DG group. On the other hand, chylomicron TG rose steeply at 2 hr time point and decreased faster in this group. Also, the adjusted value to fasting levels was the same as the unadjusted level. Fasting levels and net differences in insulin were significantly lower at 3 hr time point where chylomicron TG levels were significantly lower in the DG group. But those of glucose and FFA in the TG and DG groups did not differ significantly. Fasting and postprandial levels of fatty acid composition in serum phospholipids in the two groups did not differ significantly. In conclusion, this study indicated that one could reduce the magnitude of postprandial lipemia without influencing glucose metabolism by consumning DG oil as a substitute for TG oil. Based on the correlation of coronary artery disease and postprandial lipemia, dietary DG ingestion might have a beneficial effect in treating such a disease. Further studies are required to clarify the long-tenn effects of dietary DG on blood lipid levels in humans.

Laminariae Thallus has been known to be effective for the treatment of obesity. Te show the effectiveness of Laminariae Thallus in a more scientific way, Laminariae Thallus extract was prepared and evaluated in high fat diet rats by measuring the changes of body weight and lipid metabolism as described briefly below. 200 g of crushed Laminariae Thallus was extracted with methyl alcohol. The extract was evaporated under reduced pressure to give 14.4g. For 10 weeks, control group rat were ingested high fat diet, while the test group rat were fed with a fat diet pius Laminariae Thallus extract. Normal group was fed with normal diet. 150 mg of Laminariae Thallus extract per 1 kg of body weight was added to the diet in a test group rats. Control group rats on a high fat diet gained weight significantly, whereas the test group rats on a high fat diet plus Laminariae Thallus extract gained weight less. Significant increase of liver weight caused in a high fat diet was also inhibited by the Laminariae Thallus extract treatment. Total lipid, triglyceride, phospholipid and total cholesterol levels of serum in the high fat diet rats were remarkably increased, whereas their levels on a high fat diet plus Laminariae Thallus extract were less increased. While serum HDL-cholesterol levels was remarkably decreased in a high fat diet, its level was less decreased in a high fat diet plus Laminariae Thallus extract. Furthermore, we observed that the activities of hepatic acetyl-CoA carboxylase and fatty acid synthetase increased in a high fat diet, while their activities in a high fat diet plus Laminariae Thallus extract were getting back nearly to the normal levels of normal diet rats. These result showed that the obesity caused by a high fat diet was effectively inhibited by a Laminariae Thallus extract. Our results also showed that the abnormal lipid metabolism caused by a high fat diet was effectively cured by adding Laminariae Thallus extract.

This study aimed to investigate the improvement effect of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) on the lipid component, protein and electrolyte concentration in dyslipidemic rats. Sprague-Dawley rats (24 male) were divided into four groups, namely the ND (normal-nondyslipidemic diet), NT (normal-nondyslipidemic diet+5% turmeric), DD (control-dyslipidemic diet), and DT groups (dyslipidemic diet+5% turmeric). Rats were sacrificed at the end of 5 weeks after experiment diet. In this study, turmeric diet (NT, DT) groups in lipid composition as evidenced from the significantly reduction of serum total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol), atherosclerotic index (AI), cardiac risk factor (CRF), triglyceride (TG), phospholipid (PL), free cholesterol, cholesteryl ester, blood glucose and non esterified fatty acid (NEFA), and elevation of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) (p<0.05). The serum globulin concentration was significantly decreased (p<0.05), and the albumin concentrations were increased in turmeric diet than dyslipidemic rats. Concentrations of sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl) in sera were lower in the DT group than DD group. Concentrations of total calcium (T-Ca), phosphorus (Pi) and potassium (K) in sera were higher in the ND, NT and DT groups than DD group. Therefore, it was concluded that the 5% turmeric diet used in the condition of this study had a beneficial effect on dyslipidemia.

The present study was designed to examine the effect of dietary fish oil on blood pressure and lipid status of serum. Weanling SHRs and normotensive Wistars were fed a diet containing 5%(w/w) mackerel oil(MO), soybean oil(SO) or beef tallow(BT) for 8 weeks. Growth rate was not significantly different among three dietary groups, but that of SHRs was silightly lower than that of Wistars. SHRs showed higher systolic blood pressure than Wistar rats from the beginning and become hypertensive (over 150mmHg) after 6 week s of feeding period. The MO group of SHRs showed the lowest blood pressure at the 8th week of feeding period but that of Wistars showed similar values with other groups. Tissue weights of liver, heart and kidney were not different amongdietary aroups in Wistars and SHRs. However, heart and kidney weights of SHRs were significantly higher than those of Wistars. Microscopic examination revealed that endomysium of heart tissue and urinary space of kidney were narrowed in SHRs. Serum total and HDL-cholesterol showed similar values among three different dietary fat groups but triglyceride levels were significantly low in MO groups. HDL-cholesterol levels of SHRs were lower than those of Wistars, as well as the fractions of total HDL, the sum of HDL and $HDL_{2+3}$, while VLDL fractions were higher in SHRs. MO groups had the lower values of $HDL_1,\;HDL_{2+3}$ratio than SO and BT groups. Major dietary fatty acids were more or less incorporated into serum phospholipid and triglyceride, resulting in the characteristic fatty acid profile of each dietary group. Incorporation of $C_{18:2}({\omega}_6)$ in SO groups were pronounced, but the degree of incorporation was lower in SHRs. In Mo groups, $C_{22:6}({\omega}_3)$ levels were inreased in triglyceride. It is suggested that these changes in serum lipid fatty acid composition are related to the different patterns of serum lipid by alteration of dietary fats.
