Effect of Platycodon Grandiflorum Aqueous Extract on Lipid Levels in Rats

  • This study investigated the effects of Platycodon grandiflorum aqueous extract on lipid concentration of serum and liver in rats fed high cholesterol diet Male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to three groups (control, low dose of extract, high dose of extract) for four weeks. The serum total cholesterol concentration was significantly lower in the low and high doses of extract groups than in the control group. There was a significant decrease in the free cholesterol, cholesterol ester, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides concentrations in serum, and the total cholesterol and the triglycerides contentin liver in the low and high doses of extract groups compared to the control group. When the serum phospholipid concentration was compared among the groups, it was significantly lower in high dose of extract group than in control and low dose of extract group. It can be postulated that Platycodon grandiflorum aqueous extract may possess substantial hypolipidemic properties in rats.

Relationship of Total Body Fat Content and Its Distribution to Carbohydrate Tolerance and Serum Lipids in Diabetics (당뇨병 환자의 체지방량 및 체지방 분포와 당대사 및 혈청지질 농도와의 관계)

  • In this study. the importance of body fat distribution as an indicator of metabolic aberrations in diabetics was'evaluated. Skinfold thicknesses at eight sites and circumferences at five sites and total body fat content were measured on 105 diabetics. 1) The waist/thigh girth ratio(WTR) was positively correlated(r=0.38-0.54) to plasma glucose levels during oral glucose loading in diabetic men alone. 2) There was no significant difference in serum total cholesterol of diabetics and nondiabetics. However, HDL-cholesterol was significantly lower(p : 0.000. in male and female) in diabetics(male : 36.31$\pm$ 16.98mg/dl, female: 37.89$\pm$14.67mg/dl) than nodiabetics(male 61.75$\pm$14.08mg/dl, female : 62.29$\pm$12.65mg/dl) and serum triglyceride was significantly higher(p=0.0212) in diabetic women(171.90$\pm$ 76.61mg/dl) than nondiabetic women(111.10$\pm$42.84mg/dl) . 3) In both sexes. anthropometric measurements that significantly correlated to serum triglyceride concentration were percentage of ideal body weight. body mass index(BMI) and waist circumference. Positive and significant correlations were found between serum cholestrol, and BMI(R: 0.31, 0.34) and waist circumference(r=0.29) in diabetic men. Moreover, skinfolds of trunk area(r=0.29~0.32) especially abdomen, were closely associated with serum lipids than other fat deposits. Increasing percentage of total body fat content was accompanied by progressively increasing serum triglyceride concentration(r=0.41) in dieabetic men. This study shows that knowledge of body fat localization may help identify risks of carbohydrate intolerance and hyperlipidemia in diabetics.

Blood Pressure and Serum Lipids in Relation to Serum Gamma-glutamyltransferase Activity in Men of Rural Area (농촌 지역 남성들에서 혈청 Gamma-glutamyltransferase 활성도와 혈압 및 혈청 지질의 관련성)

  • Objectives: To examine the association between serum gamma-glutamyltransferase(GGT) activity level and blood pressure, serum lipids in the male residents of rural area, we analyzed cross-sectionally the data of 379 male health examinees aged 40 years and older from rural areas in Gyeongsangnam-do prefecture in Korea. Methods: Blood pressure and concentration of serum lipids were compared between high and low level of serum GGT activity by t-test or Wilcoxon rank sum test. Possible confounding effects of age, body mass index and coffee drinking were adjusted by analysis of covariance. Results: Adjusted values of systolic and diastolic blood pressure were higher in the group of high level of serum GGT activity in non-drinkers(P=0.055 and P=0.074 respectively) and drinkers(P=0.284 and P=0.398) of alcohol. Adjusted serum total cholesterol level was also higher in the group of high level of serum GGT activity in non-drinkers(P=0.052) but not in drinkers(P=0.981) of alcohol. In serum triglyceride, adjusted level was significantly higher in the group of high level of serum GGT activity in both non-drinkers(P=0.035) and drinkers(P=0.002) of alcohol. Conclusions: These results suggest the association of serum GGT activity and serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, or blood pressure in non-drinkres of alcohol.

  • The effect of exercise on serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentration and on urinary creatinine and 3-methylhistidine excretion was studied in eight healthy women, aged 21 to 25yr. Subjects were tested before and after a 3-day experimental period, during which 1000 times rope-jumping a day were performed. Serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels decreased significantly after exercise. Urinary excretion of creatinine and 3-methylhistidine slightly increased after exorcise.

Effects of the Feeding Hijikia fusiforme(Harvey) Okamura on Lipid Composition of Serum in Dietary Hyperlipidemic Rats (톳(Hijikia fusiforme(Harvey) Okamura)이 식이성 고지혈증 흰쥐의 혈청 지질성분에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was designed to observe the effects of the feeding of Hijikia fusiforme(Harvey) Okamura juice extract on the improvement of lipids in the serum of cholesterol-supplemented diet induced dietary hyperlipidemic rats fed experimental diets for 4 weeks. Concentration of total cholesterol and LDL-choloesterol in serum was significantly lower in the Hijikia fusiforme juice extract group than in the cholestero diet group. Concentration of HDL-cholesterol in serum was higher in the Hijikia fusiforme juice extract group than the cholesterol supplemented diet group. Those in the Hijikia fusiforme juice extract group were higher than those in the cholesterol diet group. In the ration of HDL-cholesterol concentration to total cholesterol concentration, Hijikia fusiforme juice extract administration group was higher percentage than the other groups. Atherosclerotic index was lower in the Hijikia fusiforme juice extract group than in the cholesterol diet group. Concentration of free cholesterol and cholesteryl ester in serum was rather lower in the Hijikia fusiforme juice extract group than the other groups. Triglyceride concentration in serum was significantly lower in the Hijikia fusiforme juice extract group than in the cholesterol diet group. Concentration of phospholipid in serum was more decreased in the Hijikia fusiforme juice extract group than in the cholesterol diet group. The activities of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase in serum were rather lower in the Hijikia fusiforme juice extract group than the cholesterol supplemented diet group. From the avove research, the Hijikia fusiforme juice extracts were effective on the improvement of the lipid compositions in serum of high fat diet induced dietary hyperlipidemic rats.

Serum Concentration of Major Minerals, Trace Elements, Lipids and Fatty Acids Composition Related to Whole Cow's Milk Feeding in Infancy & Young Childhood (생우유 과량섭취와 관련된 영유아의 혈청 무기질과 미량원소 함량 및 지질조성)

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of large amounts of whole cow's milk intake on serum levels of minerals and lipids. Subjects were normal infants who were brought to the pediatric hospital for vaccination at the age of 7-26 months after birth, living in Eumsung-Choongbuk area. The serum concentrations of the imnerals(calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper), lipids and fatty acids composition were analyzed in 38 infants which consumed large amount of whole cow's milk(over 700ml/day). The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1) The mean levels of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in the serum of the total subjects were 7.56$\pm$0.51mg/dl, 11.12$\pm$0.72mg/dl and 1.62$\pm$0.13mg/dl respectively. The serum concentrations of iron, zinc and copper in total subjects averaged 72.42$\pm$1.62$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, 76.29$\pm$3. 62$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl and 86.44$\pm$2.98$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl respectively. 2) The mean serum concentrations of triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL and LDL in the total number of subjects were 96.84$\pm$9.22mg/dl, 133.45$\pm$6.30mg/dl, 32.79$\pm$1.77mg/dl and 81.29$\pm$4.81mg/dl respectively. 3) The average percentages of SFA, MUFA and PUFA inth total serum fatty acids were 38.98$\pm$2.42$\%$, 25.82$\pm$0.98$\%$ and 37.30$\pm$1.09$\%$ respectively and the mean$w6/w3$fatty acids ratio was 13.48. In general, the levels of serum minerals and $\omega$3 fatty acid composition in the subjects of this study, who were whole cow's milk fed infants were lower than those reported in breast milk or formula fed infants. Therefore, the intake of large amount of whole cow's milk in the weani ng period should be controlled and adequate for the infant's nutritional status. (Korean J Community 2(4) : 477-485, 1997)

  • To investigate the influences of physical exercises on lipid metabolism in human, serum lipids were determined in swimming, weight lifting and wrestling athletes after loading their proper exercises for certain periods of time. Atherolipid numbers were also determined in these hardly exercising athletes. Besides same time, experimental studies were carried out in rats to see the effects of high-carbohydrate, high-lipid and high-protein diets of 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks duration upon serum total cholesterol level after the physical exercises. The results obtained were as follows: 1. In studies with athletes, the serum concentration of various forms lipids and atherolipid number were increased for some periods of time by imposing physical exercises. 2. In experimental studies with rats, various dietary effect upon the serum total cholosterol level after loading physical exercises were as follow; on high-lipid diets, the serum level increased upto the 4th week and thereafter kept the same increased level until the 8th week; on high-carbohydrate diet, the level increased upto the 2nd week and extended to the 4th week with the same increased level, but somewhat decreased at the 8th week; and on the high-protein diet, the level increased upto the 2nd week, and decreased progressively from the 4th week.

A Study on Nutrients Intakes, Body Composition and Hematological Status of High School Girls in Fishing and Urban Areas (어촌과 도시지역 여고생의 영양실태, 체조성 및 혈액성상에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examin height, weight and body composition nutrient intakes and serum lipids for high school girls in urban and fishing area. The subjects consisted of 78(44 fishing and 34 urban) high school girls aged in average 17.3 and 17 years. Their dietary intakes were assesed for 1 day by means of 24 hours dietary recall method. Concentrations of serum lipids, percentage of body fat and volume of total body water were measured. The mean energy intake of the subjects were 1431 ㎉ in fishing and 1659 ㎉ in urban area. The subjects in fishing area(urban) consumed 58(67) g protein, 27(36) g lipid, 459(634) mg calcium, 676(945) mg phosphorous, 11(14) mg iron, 786(574) RE retinol, 2.8(3.6) mg tocopherol, 0.9(1.0) mg thiamin, 1.2(1.1) mg riboflavin, 16.9(20.5) mg niacin and 64.1(92.8) mg ascorbic acid, respectively. Energy, calcium, iron and tocopherol intakes were lower than the Korean RDA in both girls. The mean percentage of fishing girls were 19.8% and significantly lower than 25.6% in urban. These values seem to fall in the desirable range in fishing girls, but high school girls in urban is seemed to overweight. The mean saturated fatty acid(SFA), monounsaturated fatty acid(MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acid(PUFA) and dietary cholesterol(Chol) intakes were 7.3 g, 8.1 g, 7.2 g and 263 mg for fishing girls were 13.1 g, 12.1 g, 9.1 g and 216 mg for urban girls respectively. The fat, SFA and MUFA intakes in fishing girls were significantly lower than urban girls. The P/M/S ratio was 0.9/1.1/1 for fishing, was 0.7/0.9/1 for urban. The mean serum triglyceride(TG), total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol concentrations were 77.7(61.8) mg/dl, 124.5(142.3) mg/dl, 59.3(22.4) mg/dl and 49.6(107.8) mg/dl in fishing girls(urban girls), respectively. All of these values seem to fall in the desirable range but HDL-chlesterol concentrations in fishing girls were significantly higher than urban girls and LDL-cholesterol concentrations in fishing girls were significantly lower than urban girls. There were positive correlations between body fat percent and total cholesterol or LDL-cholesterol concentration : negative correlations between between body fat percent and HDL-cholesterol concentration : positive correlation between fat intake and LDL-cholesterol concentration : negative correlations between serum HDL-cholesterol concentration and fat or SFA or MUFA intakes. Effect of Nonlamellar-Prone Lipids on Protein Encapsulation in Liposomes

  • We investigated the effect of two nonlamellar-prone lipids, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and dioleoylglycerol (DOG), on the efficiency of protein encapsulation in liposomes. When the phosphatidylcholine (PC) matrix was replaced with PE or DOG during liposome formulation, the amounts of glutathione S-transferase and bovine serum albumin entrapped in the vesicles increased with increasing PE or DOG concentration. The presence of PE and DOG synergistically affected protein entrapment. These results suggest that protein encapsulation can be enhanced by the presence of nonlamellar lipids and/or lipid-induced membrane properties.

Effects of Dietary Fatty Acids on Serum Lipids and Fatty Acid Composition of Serum Phospholipids in Men

  • Serum lipid levels and fatty acid composition of serum phospholipids(PL) were investigated in 24 healthy male subjects who consumed either corn oil(CO) rich In linoleic acid(LA), perilla oil(PO) rich in $\alpha$-linolenic acid($\alpha$-LNA), or canola oil acid(OA) as a major fat source fir 5 weeks. The PO and the CNO groups showed significant(P <0.05) increases in serum high density lipoprotein-cholesterol(HDL-C) levels and in ratios of HDL- C/total cholesterol(TC) compared with initial values measured at the beginning of the study. Significantly(p <0.05) increased concentrations of serum triglycerides(TG) ware observed after 5 weeks of the CO based diet compared with both its intial value and the concentration observed after 5 weeks with the PO-based diet. fatty acid composition of serum PL reflected changes in dietary fatty acid composition and metabolism. Compared with the initial levels, significandy increased contents of eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) were observed in serum PL of the PO group and significantly increased contents of $\alpha$-LNA and EPA were observed in the CNO group. Arachidonic acid(AA) content of serum PL did not change in the CO group during the study period, although, the increase in LA was significant(P <0.05). Compared with the CO-based diet, both the PO and the CNO-based diets seem to have beneficial effects on atherosclerosis by influencing the serum lipid profile and fatty acid composition of serum PL.
