This study presents the cytologic features of peritoneal washings, with particular emphasis on the cytologic discrimination among serous, mucinous, and endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the ovary. We selected histologically confirmed 27 cases of peritoneal washing : 8 cases of serous cystadenocarcinomas, 5 cases of mucinous cystadenocarcinomas, and 14 cases of endometrioid adenocarcinomas. The most frequent cytologic pattern of three tumors was clusters. Ball pattern was found in serous cystadenocarcinoma(36%) and acinar pattern in endometrioid adenocarcinoma(36%). Mucinous adenocarcinoma showed mucoid background(100%) and endometrioid adenocarcinoma revealed inflammatory background(43%). The cytoplasmic vacuoles were noted in 80%, 13%, and 43% of mucinous, serous, and endometriold adenocarcinoma, respectively. The endometrioid adenocarcinoma showed prominent nucleoli(64%). In conclusion, the cytologic findings of mucinous cystadenocarcinoma were different from that of serous and endometrioid carcinomas, such as mucoid background, abundant cyytoplasm with vacuolated cytoplasm, and peripherally located cytoplasm. Although endometriold carcinoma showed acinar pattern and prominent nucleoli, the differential diagnosis between serous cystadenocarcinoma and endometrioid adenocarcinoma in peritoneal washing cytology was was always possible.
Central serous chorioretinopathy is a relatively benign condition of young to middle-aged men, characterized by serous detachment of central retina as a consequence of focal leakage of fluid from the choriocapillaris through a defect in the retinal pigment epithelium. Approximately 80% of central serous chorioretinopathy undergo spontaneous resolution within 6 months. However 20 to 30% of patients with central serous chorioretinopathy have one or more recurrences and undergo chronic courses. In these cases laser photocoagulation is used to burn the leakage site directly, but there is no evidence that it reduces the chance of permanent loss of visual function and recurrence. We have administered stellate ganglion blocks (SGB) on a 43 year old male patient with central serous chorioretinopathy with multiple recurrences and experienced good results. We therefore recommend SGB as an effective treatment for central serous chorioretinopathy in conjunction with other ophthalmological treatments.

Background: Different types of cancer exhibit abnormalities in cell cycle regulators. The murine double minute-2(MDM2) cell cycle regulator is a proto-oncogene that negatively regulates the P53 tumour suppressor gene. Surface epithelial tumours constitute approximately two thirds of ovarian neoplasms. Each histologic type can be classified as benign, borderline and malignant. This study aimed to examine immunohistochemical expression of the MDM2 protein in ovarian serous and mucinous epithelial tumours (benign, borderline and malignant). Materials and Methods: This study included forty five ovarian tumours, subdivided into fifteen cystadenomas (5 serous and 10 mucinous), fifteen borderline tumours (11 serous and 4 mucinous) and fifteen cystadenocarcinomas (9 serous and 6 mucinous). Paraffin sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin for histopathologic study, and with mouse monoclonal anti-MDM2 antibody for immunohistochemistry. Results: MDM2 positivity was detected in 28.9% of the studied ovarian tumours. All benign tumours were negative and positivity was significantly higher in malignant than borderline tumours (P value of chi-square test =0.000). Significantly, all MDM2 positive mucinous tumours were malignant with no positive mucinous borderline tumours. Malignant tumours showed positive MDM2 expression in 83.3% of mucinous type and in 55.6% of serous type. Borderline serous tumours showed negative MDM2 in 72.7% of cases (P value of Z test =0.04). Conclusions: Alterations in the expression of the cell cycle regulator (MDM2) occur early in the process of tumourigenesis in serous and mucinous ovarian tumours. We suggest that MDM2 may be used in those tumours as a marker for risk stratification and identification of cases with cancer development and progression. We recommend further studies on MDM2 immunohistochemistry, in conjunction with adjuvant methods as DNA ploidy and FISH gene amplification, focusing on the mucinous tumours and differentiating between the three tumour categories, benign, borderline and malignant.
The differentiation between reactive mesothelial and carcinoma cells in serous effusion cytology can be a diagnostic challenge based on morphology alone. The expression of some cell adhesion molecules may be helpful in the differential diagnosis. This study evaluated the usefulness of E-cadherin Immunocytochemistry for discrimination of carcinoma cells from reactive mesothelial cells. Alcohol fixed, paraffin embedded cell blocks taken from 42 reactive and 102 malignant serous effusions with histologically confirmed diagnoses were immunostained with monoclonal antibody to E-cadherin by LSAB method. E-cadherin expression was identified in only 2 benign reactive serous effusions(5%) whereas 91 malignant serous effusions(89%) expressed E-cadherin The differences in immunostaining for E-cadherin between reactive and malignant serous effusions were statistically significant(p < 0.001). The sensitivity and specificity of the E-cadherin immunostaining for carcinoma cells were 89% and 95%, respectively. In conclusion, E-cadherin is a useful diagnostic adjunct for differentiation between reactive mesothelial and carcinoma cells in serous effusions.
The ultrastructures of the secretory acinar granules of submandibular and parotid salivary gland were examined in the Korean striped field mouse, Apodemus agraius. The acini of the submandibular salivary gland had serous and mucous acinar cells filled with numerous secretory granules. The serous acinar granules had uniformly fine dense contents and were round typed with a definite boundary between the granules. The mucous acinar granules were relatively coarse, with moderate density, and clustered together as a result of the indistinct boundaries between the granules. The acini of the parotid salivary glands contained only serous cells filled with numerous round-typed serous acinar granules. Serous acinar granules had uniformed dense matrix and definite boundaries. The ultrastructures without substructure in a matrix of serous and mucous acinar granules in the submandibular and parotid salivary glands of A. agraius were similar to those of species of Rodentia but different from those of Soricidae in Korea with a characteristic substructure in a matrix. This ultrastructure and charateristics in secretory acinar granules provide fundamental data for molecular comparisions of genetic relationships and are one of the key methods for classifying A. agraius.
The morphological findings of the parotid, mandibualr and sublingual salivary glands of the Korean native goat have been investigated by the histological and histochemical observation using the light microscope. Tissues were fixed with 10% neutral buffered formalin and Bouin's solution, and embedded in paraffin. The tissue sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, Heidenhain's azocarmine-aniline blue, alcian blue, toluidine blue, periodic acid Schiff, aldehyde fuchsin, alcian blue-periodic acid Schiff and aldehyde fuchsin-alcian blue. Some sections were stained with the alcian blue after each teatment of diastase digestion, methylation, methylation-saponification, and neuraminidase digestion. The results were as follows ; 1. The major salivary glands were compound. tubuloacinar glands, and the parenchyma was composed of acini, intercalated ducts, striated ducts and excretory ducts. 2. The acini were composed of serous cells in the parotid gland, and mucous cells, serous cells and seous demilunes in the mandibular gland. The acini of the sublingual glands were composed of mucous cells and serous demilunes. 3. In histochemistry, the serous cells of the parotid gland contained neutral mucin and enzyme-liable silaic acid. 4. The serous cells and demilunes of the mandibular gland contained neutral mucin and enzyme-liable sialic acid, and the mueous cells contained sulfated mucin, enzyme liable sialic acid and neutral mucin 5. In the sublingual gland, the mucous cells contained sulfated mucin, enzyme-resistant sialic acid and neutral mucin, and the serous demilunes contained neutral mucin and enzyme-resistant sialic acid.
Serous otitis media is closely related with auditory tube function, but its etiology and pathogenesis are not clearly defined yet. So we tried to prove the theory of hydrops ex vacuo via the experimental study with cats by means of obstructing the pharyngeal orfice of the auditory tube and observe the serial changes in tympanic mucosa through light and electron microscopy. The results are as follows; 1. We confirmed the production of serous otitis media with auditory tube obstruction and have a new understanding of auditory tube function in middle ear aeration. 2. The effusion in serous otitis media was produced from the next day of experiment and increased till the fourteenth day, but decreased after the spontaneous perforation of ear drum. 3. Through the light microscopy, we observed the increasement of the sercretory cells including goblet cells, epithelial hyperplasia, capillary proliferation and invasion of inflammatory cells. 4. Through the elctron microscopy, we observed the protrusion of secretory cells, blobs in cilia, loss of cilia, increasement of vesicles, vacuoles and dense bodies in ciliated cells and Invasion of inflammatory cells. With above results, we concluded that aeration through auditory tube is the most important factor in serous otitis media and presumed the effusion was secreted by secretory cells.
The cytological distinction of carcinoma cells from reactive mesothelial cells in serous effusions nay be difficult or imposslble based on morphology alone, especially In specimens containing reactive mesothelial cells which form glandular or ball- or papillary-shaped conglomerates or which mimic malignant nuclear features. Calretinin is a newly reported immunocytochemical marker for mesothelial cells, which can potentially be utilized for facilitating this distinction. This study evaluated the usefulness of calretinin for the discrimination between reactive mesothelial and metastatic carcinoma cells in serous effusion. Immunocytochemical staining was undertaken on 33 benign reactive and 87 malignant serous effusion specimens with histologically confirmed diagnoses. The specimens including smears and cell blocks were stained with polyclonal antibody to calretinin by labelled streptavidin-biotin method. The positive expression of calretinin was noted In 32(97.0%) of 33 benign reactive effusions and 9(10.3%) of 87 malignant effusions. The sensitivity and specificity of the calretinin immunostaining for reactive mesothelial cells was 97.0% and 89.7%, respectively. In conclusion, calretinin is a useful marker for distinguishing between reactive mesothelial cells and carcinoma cells in serous effusions.
