  • In this paper, the characteristics of a series-fed dipole pair antenna with an end-aligned strip pair director are studied. In the proposed SDP antenna, two strip dipole antennas with different lengths and a ground reflector are connected trough a coplanar stripline. The strip pair director placed above the second dipole element are two rectangular-shaped strips and is aligned at the ends of the two arms of the second dipole. The variations on the antenna performance for different lengths and widths of the director are analyzed, and optimal design parameters for the enhancement of the bandwidth are obtained. The optimized SDP antenna is fabricated on an FR4 substrate, and the experimental results show that the antenna has a frequency band of 1.65-2.95 GHz for a VSWR < 2, which shows enhanced bandwidth compared to the conventional SDP antenna.

  • In this paper, a broadband series-fed bow-tie dipole pair (SBDP) antenna operating in the band of 1.7-2.7 GHz for mobile communication base station applications is proposed. The proposed antenna uses bow-tie-shaped dipole elements instead of straight strip dipole ones used in a conventional series-fed dipole pair (SDP) antenna. The simulation results show that the lowest operating frequency is shifted toward lower frequency as the flare angle increases, and so the lengths of the bow-tie dipole elements can be reduced in proportion to the frequency shift toward lower frequency. An SBDP antenna with a flare angle of 10 degrees is fabricated on an FR4 substrate (dielectric constant = 4.4 and thickness = 1.6 mm) and total width of the fabricated antenna is reduced by 10% compared to that of the conventional SDP antenna. The measured impedance bandwidth for voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) < 2 is 48.8% (1.69-2.78 GHz), gain is 5.8-6.3 dBi, and the front-to-back ratio (FBR) is 14-17 dB.

  • In this paper, a design of a compact series-fed dipole pair(SDP) antenna with end-loaded rectangular patches is presented. In order to reduce the lateral size of a conventional SDP antenna, rectangular patches are end-loaded to the two dipole elements of the SDP antenna and a grooved ground plane is used by adding a patch at both ends of the ground plane. The effects of varying the length and width of the rectangular patches on the antenna performance such as input reflection coefficient are investigated. An optimized compact SDP antenna covering a frequency band ranging from 1.7 GHz to 2.7 GHz is designed and fabricated on an FR4 substrate. The total width of the fabricated prototype of the proposed antenna is reduced by approximately 14.3% compared to the conventional SDP antenna. Experimental results show that the antenna presents a 48.7% bandwidth in the range of 1.68-2.76 GHz and a stable gain of 5.6-6.0 dBi with minimal degradation. Moreover, a front-to-back ratio is improved by about 0.7 to 7.4 dB.

  • In this paper, a design method to obtain a band rejection characteristic in the 2.4-2.484 GHz WLAN band is studied for a series-fed dipole pair (SDP) antenna operating in the band of 1.7-2.7 GHz for mobile communication base station applications. The band rejection characteristic is achieved by inserting U-shaped slots on the coplanar strip line connecting the two dipole elements of the SDP antenna. The effects of the location and dimension of the slots on the band rejection characteristics are examined. The optimized SDP antenna with WLAN band rejection is fabricated on an FR4 substrate and the experimental results show that the antenna has a desired band rejection performance with a frequency band of 1.65-2.78 GHz (51.0%) for a VSWR < 2, and a rejection band of 2.39-2.54 GHz.

  • In this paper, a design method for enhancing the gain of a series-fed dipole pair (SDP) antenna using mutiple directors is studied. Strip-type directors are located above the second dipole of the SDP antenna, and the variations of the input VSWR bandwidth and gain depending on the length of the second dipole and the number of directors are analyzed. The antenna is optimized to obtain gain > 8 dBi in the frequency range of 1.7-2.7 GHz, which has three directors in the optimum design. The optimized antenna is designed on an FR4 substrate with a dimension of 86.2 mm by 152.3 mm, and it has frequency bands of 1.67-2.79 GHz for a VSWR < 2 and 1.69-2.72 GHz for a gain > 8 dBi.
