  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of torsional eccentricity on the seismic response of high-rise RC bearing-wall structures with vertical irregularity. For this purpose, two 1:12 scale 17-story RC model structures, the one has concentric shear wall and the other has eccentric shear wall, were constructed and then subjected to a series of earthquake excitations. The test result shows the followings: 1) the layout of shear wall has the negligible effect on the natural period and the base shear coefficient, 2) the eccentric model behaves in the first and second mode while the concentric model has the first mode predominantly, 3) the stiff frame in the eccentric model resists most of overturning moment in the severe earthquake though both frames (the stiff and flexible frames) resist almost equally in the design earthquake.

  • When high waves and storm surge strike simultaneously, the characteristics of the fluid field change drastically from overtopping according to the wave runup height to overflow through a transition state that combines overtopping and overflows. However, an estimation model or evaluation method has not yet been established because there is not enough engineering data. This study developed a wave overtopping-overflow transition model based on a full-scale experiment involving wave overtopping and overflow transition, which appropriately reproduced the effect of waves or the temporal change in inundation flow. Using this model to perform a calculation for the wave overtopping and overflow transition process under typical circumstances, this study determined the wave runup height and features of the inundation flow under time series changes as an example.

  • In this paper, we proposed an analytical model for TFT which has series of the polycrystalline structures. An average speed is defined as carrier speed by the electric field. The effective square is suggested as the area of grain without depletion for the changed grain size. First, physical parameters such as grain size, channel lenght and trap density, have been changed to prove the validity of the average speed model and the value of the effective square has been estimated through drain-source current.

  • This paper introduces an identification model called the Dynamic Neural Network(DNN) with a multilayer neural network in the forward path and a linear dynamical system in the feedback path, and defines Dynamic BackPropagation(DBP) as a learning algorithm for it. This identification model uses the feedback of its own output as a learning signal, which is not affected by a noise added to the output terminal of the plant so, it can be considered as a parallel identification model, and when compared with a series-parallel model which does not use the concept of the feedback, the proposed identification scheme exhibits more robust performance.

  • Major ports in Northeastern Asia engage in fierce competition to attract transshipment traffic volume. Existing time series analyses for analyzing port competition relationships examine the types of competition and relations through the signs of coefficients in cointegration equations using the transshipment traffic volume results. However, there are cases for which analyzing competing relationships is not possible based on the results of the transshipment traffic volume data differences and limitations in the forecasting of traffic volume. Accordingly, we used the Lotka-Volterra (L-V) model, also known as the ecosystem competitive relation model, to analyze port competition relations for the long-term forecast of South Korean transshipment traffic volume.

  • In this paper, the contact force between two colliding bodies is modeled by using Hertz's force-displacement law and nonlinear damping function. In order to verify the appropriateness of the proposed contact force model, the drop type impact test is carried out for different impact velocities and different materials of the impacting body, such as rubber, plastic and steel. In the drop type impact experiment, six photo interrupters in series close to the collision location are installed to measure the velocity before impact more accurately. The characteristics of contact force model are investigated through experiments. The parameters of the contact force model are estimated using the optimization technique. Finally the estimated parameters are used to predict the impact force between two colliding bodies in opening action of the magnetic contactor, a kind of switch mechanism for switching electric circuits.

  • A method is proposed in this paper to estimate the workability of self-compacting concrete (SCC) in different mixing conditions with different mixers and mixing volumes by recording the mixing process based on deep learning (DL). The SCC mixing videos were transformed into a series of image sequences to fit the DL model to predict the SF and VF values of SCC, with four groups in total and approximately thirty thousand image sequence samples. The workability of three groups SCC whose mixing conditions were learned by the DL model, was estimated. One additionally collected group of the SCC whose mixing condition was not learned, was also predicted. The results indicate that whether the SCC mixing condition is included in the training set and learned by the model, the trained model can estimate SCC with different workability effectively at the same time. Our goal to estimate SCC workability in different mixing conditions is achieved.

  • This paper presents a forecasting method for domestic demand of electric home appliances. Because of lack of data, some popular methods such as time series analysis may not be appropriate to forecast such a demand domestically. We suggest a systematic and practical method by considering structural parameters and variables which determine the actual demand. We use this model to forecast the demand of color TV. Since the parameters in our model may be variant according to the change of economic environment, our model leads the user to develop a dynamic model to be used in the well-known System Dynamics Approach.

  • This study presents an approach to model the Electric Railway System with the common grounding based on the 8-port network model and to analyse traction power feeding system focused on the amplification of harmonic current. The entire system can be easily modeled by the combination of 8-port representation of each component in parallel and/or series. Through the research, 8-port network model which can be effectively applied to harmonic analysis is derived.

  • This paper investigates optimization-based base station (BS) placement. An optimization model is defined and the BS placement problem is transformed to a lexicographical stratified programming (LSP) model for a given trajectory, according to different accuracy requirements. The feasible region for BS deployment is obtained from the positioning system requirement, which is also solved with signal coverage problem in BS placement. The LSP mathematical model is formulated with the average geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) as the criterion. To achieve an optimization solution, a tolerant factor based complete stratified series approach and grid searching method are utilized to obtain the possible optimal BS placement. Because of the LSP model utilization, the proposed algorithm has wider application scenarios with different accuracy requirements over different trajectory segments. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has better BS placement result than existing approaches for a given trajectory.
