  • In order to study the degradation and damage behaviors of steel frame welded connections, two series of tests in references with different connection constructions were carried out subjected to various cyclic loading patterns. Hysteretic curves, degradation and damage behaviours and fatigue properties of specimens were firstly studied. Typical failure modes and probable damage reasons were discussed. Then, various damage index models with variables of dissipative energy, cumulative displacement and combined energy and displacement were summarized and applied for all experimental specimens. The damage developing curves of ten damage index models for each connection were obtained. Finally, the predicted and evaluated capacities of damage index models were compared in order to describe the degraded performance and failure modes. The characteristics of each damage index model were discussed in depth, and then their distributive laws were summarized. The tests and analysis results showed that the loading histories significantly affected the distributive shapes of damage index models. Different models had their own ranges of application. The selected parameters of damage index models had great effect on the developing trends of damage curves. The model with only displacement variable was recommended because of a more simple form and no integral calculation, which was easier to be formulated and embedded in application programs.

  • Multi-phase machines can be used in variable speed drives. Their applications include electric ship propulsion, 'more-electric aircraft' and traction applications, electric vehicles, and hybrid electric vehicles. Multi-phase machines enable independent control of a few numbers of machines that are connected in series in a particular manner with their supply being fed from a single voltage source inverter(VSI). The idea was first implemented for a five-phase series-connected two-motor drive system, but is now applicable to any number of phases more than or equal to five-phase. The number of series-connected machines is a function of the phase number of VSI. Theoretical and simulation studies have already been reported for number of multi-phase multi-motor drive configurations of series-connection type. Variable speed induction motor drives without mechanical speed sensors at the motor shaft have the attractions of low cost and high reliability. To replace the sensor, information concerning the rotor speed is extracted from measured stator currents and voltages at motor terminals. Open-loop estimators or closed-loop observers are used for this purpose. They differ with respect to accuracy, robustness, and sensitivity against model parameter variations. This paper analyses operation of an MRAS estimator based sensorless control of a vector controlled series-connected two-motor five-phase drive system with current control in the stationary reference frame. Results, obtained with fixed-voltage, fixed-frequency supply, and hysteresis current control are presented for various operating conditions on the basis of simulation results. The purpose of this paper is to report the first ever simulation results on a sensorless control of a five-phase two-motor series-connected drive system. The operating principle is given followed by a description of the sensorless technique.

  • A new method for fabrication of transistor like structure of the bifacial solar cell using spin-on doping and electroless plating has been proposed and the basic characteristics of the bifacial cell have been investigated. It is found that 9% increase in short circuit current is achieved with bifacial connection than the unifacial connection. Some unwanted effect of the series resistance on collection efficiency under different mode of illumination has been pointed out. Loss mechanisms inherent in the transistor like bifacial structure have also been discussed.

  • Power devices for high power drivers that need high switching speed (IGCT, HVIGBT) have been continuously developed. However, serial and parallel connections using several much cheaper, lower power capacity of devices than an expensive high power device are very useful methods in the aspect of cost down and high power application. Even the current and voltage unbalance problem is occurred at each devices. This unbalance characteristics are mainly caused by the differences of physical characteristics of each devices and the line inductance (stray inductance) of bus bars that consist of current path. This paper deals simulation analysis of serial connection of IGCTs and parallel connection of IGCTs using physical model of devices. And also, introduces the method to reduce the voltage and current unbalance problem.

  • A great number of moment-resisting steel structures collapsed due to ductile crack initiation at welded beam-column connections, followed by explosive brittle fracture in the Kobe (Hyogoken-Nanbu) earthquake in 1995. A series of experimental and numerical studies on cracking behaviors of beam-column connections in steel bridge piers were carried out by the authors' team. This paper aims to study the effect of post weld treatment on cracking behaviors of the connections during a strong earthquake event. Experiments of three specimens with different weld finishes, i.e., as-welded, R-finish, and burr grinding, were conducted. The experimental results indicate that the instants of ductile crack initiation are greatly delayed for the specimens with R-finish and burr grinding finishes compared with the as-welded one. The strain concentration effect in the connection is also greatly reduced in the specimens with post weld treatment compared with the as-welded one, which was also verified in the tests.

  • The resistive type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is a current limiter using the Quench mechanism of superconductors. When Quench occurs in superconductors, the resistance of superconductors increases abruptly. In order to increase SFCL capacity, current limiting elements were connected in series. If the Quench current of each element was different, voltage distribution was imbalanced. This imbalance could be removed by arrangement including series and parallel connection of elements. Based on this result, an SFCL of 1.8kV/50A was designed and experimented, expecially, in terms of increasing the voltage rating.

  • Photovoltaic (PV) solar systems with series-connected module integrated converters (MICs) are receiving increased attention because of their ability to create high output voltage while performing local maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control for individual solar panels, which is a solution for partial shading effects in PV systems at panel level. To eliminate the partial shading effects in PV system more effectively, sub-MICs are utilized at the cell level or grouped cell level within a PV solar panel. This study presents the results of a series-output-connection MPPT (SOC-MPPT) controller for sub-MIC architecture using a single sensor at the output and a single digital MPPT controller (sub-MIC SOC-MPPT controller and architecture). The sub-MIC SOC-MPPT controller and architecture are investigated based on boost type sub-MICs. Experimental results under steady-state and transient conditions are presented to verify the performance of the controller and the effectiveness of the architecture.

  • Generally, Capacitor charging power supply (CCPS) consist of the full-bridge inverter, LC resonant tank and capacitance load. The multi-connection systems are normally used for high voltage or high power application. In this paper, conventional parallel operation resonant type and proposed series operation PWM type CCPS for pulse corona occurrence of DeSOx, DeNOx system using magnetic pulse compressor make a comparison. The effect of proposed CCPS is verified by circuit characteristics analysis of parallel operation resonant type and series operation PWM type, and it is confirmed by simulation result.
