  • Geometric shape morphing is an interesting geometric operation that interpolates two geometric shapes to generate in-betweens. It is well known that Minkowski operations can be used to test and build collision-free motion paths and to modify shapes in digital image processing. In this paper, we present a new geometric modeling technique to control the morphing on geometric shapes based on Minkowski sum. The basic idea develops from the linear interpolation on two geometric shapes where the traditional algebraic sum is replaced by Minkowski sum. We extend this scheme into a Bezier-like control structure with multiple control shapes, which enables the interactive control over the intermediate shapes during the morphing sequence as in the traditional CAGD curve/surface editing. Moreover, we apply the theory of blossoming to our control structure, whereby our control structure becomes even more flexible and general. In this paper, we present mathematical models of control structure, their properties, and computational issues with examples.

  • The Cut off-type progressive die for U-bending production part is a very specific division. This study reveals the sheet metal forming process with multi-forming die by Center Carrier type feeding system. Through the FEM simulation by DEFORM, it was accepted to u-bending process as the first performance to design of strip process layout. The next process of die development was studied according to sequence of die development, i.e. die structure, machining condition for die making, die materials, heat treatment of die components, know-how and so on. The feature of this study is the die development of scrapless progressive die of multi-stage through the Modeling on the I-DEAS program, components drawing on the Auto-Lisp, CAD/CAM application, ordinary machine tool operating and revision by tryout.

  • The main objective of this study is to simulate the design and operational policies of the assembly shop of an automotive plant for planning purposes and to find possible improvements. The simulation study was used to answer the following questions: How does the sequence affect the daily throughput\ulcorner What are the bottlenecks to the assembly lines in a given scenario\ulcorner A Simulation model was developed in accordance with the objective of this study. The model incorporates detailed workstation logic to accurately model downtime results through the use of a pull cord system. It is written with SIMAN. The discrete event feature of SIMAN does not adequately model the conveyor systems of the asembly shop. As a result, a few subroutines were added to the SIMAN modeling structures to mimic the operations of the assembly shop. Use of the model uncovered attractive improvement opportunities, such as a tremendous gain in annual volume if four additional spaces were added to a between-line buffer.

  • De-manufacturing is an entire process of collecting, disassembling, reusing, refurbishing, recycling, and/or disposing products that are obsolete or un-repairable. Designing the products for inexpensive and efficient disassembly enhances the ease of de-manufacturing. Virtual disassembly addresses the difficulty and the methods to disassemble a product in design stage rather than really disassemble a product at the end of its life cycle. Based on the virtual disassembly analysis results, design will be improved for better assembling/disassembling. This paper presents a systematic virtual disassembly methodology such as disassembly relation modeling, path/sequence automatic generation and evaluation. This paper also presents a new virtual disassembly interface paradigm via virtual reality technology for disassembly simulation in virtual environment.

  • In this paper, a job shop scheduling system is developed which can cope with the changes of shop floor status with flexibility. This system suggests near optimal sequence of operations by using Genetic Algorithm which considers alternative process plans. The Genetic Algorithm proposed in this paper has some characteristics. The mutation rate is differentiated in order to enhance the chance to escape a local optimum and to assure the global optimum. And it employs the double gene structure to easily make the modeling of the shop floor. Finally, the quality of its solution and the computational time are examined in comparison with the method of a Simulated Annealing.

  • The current study presents a zero-one integer programming approach to determine the minimum break point set for the coordination of directional relays. First, the network is reduced if there are any parallel lines or three-end nodes. Second, all the directed loops are enumerated to reduce the iteration. Finally, the problem is formulated as a set-covering problem, and the break point set is determined using the zero-one integer programming technique. Arbitrary starting relay locations and the arbitrary consideration of relay sequence to set and coordinate relays result in navigating the loops many times and futile attempts to achieve system-wide relay coordination. These algorithms are compared with the existing methods, and the results are presented. The problem is formulated as a setcovering problem solved by the zero-one integer programming approach using LINGO 12, an optimization modeling software.

  • Paper process is complex and multivariable system. Identification of a paper process model is imperative for the development of predictive control method. 13-level Pseudo-Random Sequence Signals were used to identify the plant model in which the neural network model was considered model as a real paper process. Results of simulations for identification using 13-level PRS signals and Prediction Error Method are compared with plant operation data. From the comparison, we can see that the dynamics of the model show good agreement with those of real plant.

  • In operating distributed systems, proactive management is one of the major concerns for better quality of service and future capacity planning. In order to handle this management problem effectively, it is necessary to analyze performances of the distributed system and events generated by components in the system. This paper provides a rule-based event parsing engine for proactive management. Our event parsing engine uses object hooking-based and event-token approaches. The object hooking-based approach prepares new conditions and actions in Java classes and allows dynamically exchange them as hook objects in run time. The event-token approach allows the event parsing engine consider a proper sequence and relationship among events as an event token to trigger an action. We analyze the performance of our event parsing engine with two different implementations of rule structure; one is table-based and the other is tree-based.

  • Hyperglycemia-induced hemichorea (HGHC) is a rare but characteristic hyperkinetic movement disorder involving limbs on one side of the body. In a 75-year-old woman with a left-sided HGHC, conventional brain MR imaging showed very subtle T1-hyperintensity and unique gadolinium enhancement in the basal ganglia contralateral to movements. Multi-parametric MRI was acquired using pulse sequence with quantification of relaxation times and proton density by multi-echo acquisition. Myelin map was reconstructed based on new tissue classification modeling. In this case report of multi-parametric MRI, quantitative measurement of myelin change related to HGHC in brain structures and its possible explanations are presented. This is the first study to demonstrate myelin loss related to hyperglycemic insult in multi-parametric quantitative MR imaging.
