The purpose of our study is to shorten the scanning time and minimize the inconveniences of the patients in acquisition of the black blood images using the signal void effect in the fast spin echo technique while keeping the diagnostic value of the test. Thirty-two consecutive patients who underwent black blood MR imaging were examed with additional double inversion recovery (DIR) sequence and the conventional fast spin echo (FSE) sequence. Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and Contrast to Noise Ratio (CNR) of the internal carotid arteries' lumen were compared in T1 and T2 weighted images to determine whether there are differences between the two techniques for depiction of the signal void effect inside the vessel wall. The FSE images showed lower SNR values than the DIR images in both of the T1 and T2 weighted images (11.49% and 13.66% respectively). While the CNR values were higher in the FSE images than in the DIR images in both of the T1 and T2 weighted images (8.69% and 7.55% respectively). There was no significant difference between the two techniques for either of the SNR or CNR (p>0.05, p>0.05 respectively). The DIR and the FSE images demonstrated almost identical imaging patterns. Therefore, it is anticipated that the use of FSE technique in acquisition of the black blood imaging could reduce the inconveniences of the patients during the scanning and minimize exam time while keeping the diagnostic value of the test.

In this paper, a translation, rotation and scale invariant system for the classification of closed 2D images using the bispectrum of a contour sequence and the weighted fuzzy mean method is derived and compared with the classification process using one of the competitive neural algorithm, called a LVQ(Learning Vector Quantization). The bispectrun based on third order cumulants is applied to the contour sequences of the images to extract fifteen feature vectors for each planar image. These bispectral feature vectors, which are invariant to shape translation, rotation and scale transformation, can be used to represent two-dimensional planar images and are fed into an classifier using weighted fuzzy mean method. The experimental processes with eight different shapes of aircraft images are presented to illustrate the high performance of the proposed classifier.
In this paper, the zerotrees of DWT is proposed to be used in a speech based digital watermarking for digital images. Since in this research work the raw speech and its content are used as a watermark signal, in the watermarking scheme, the PCM coded speech signal is embedded into a sequence of images. The performance of the scheme is evaluated by the PSNR obtained from the watermarked images and the strength of attacks the embedded speech signal can survive. Moreover, since in this research work the contents contained in the speech is used to identify the specific information hidden in the embedded signal. The speech signal after being extracted from the watermarked images is played back to the listeners to determine whether its content is intelligible or not. The experimental results show impressive performance of the scheme implementing our proposed technique, judged by the higher robustness obtained form the embedded signal against various types of attack, including brightness/contrast enhancement, Twirling, highpass filtering and JPEG compression standard.
To create a more realistic soccer game derived from TV images, we are developing an image synthesis system that generates 3D image sequence from TV images. We propose the method for the team and the pose recognition of players in TV images. The representation includes camera calibration method, team recognition method and pose recognition method. To find the location of a player on the field, a field model is constructed and a player's field position is transformed by 4-feature points. To recognize the team information of players, we compute RGB mean values and standard deviations of a player in TV images. Finally, to recognize pose of a player, this system computes the velocity and the ratio of player(height/width). Experimental results are included to evaluate the performance of the team and the pose recognition.

In this paper, a method for selection of the optimal feature vectors is proposed for the classification of closed 2D shapes using the bispectrum of a contour sequence. The bispectrum based on third order cumulants is applied to the contour sequences of the images to extract feature vectors for each planar image. These bispectral feature vectors, which are invariant to shape translation, rotation and scale transformation, can be used to represent two-dimensional planar images, but there is no certain criterion on the selection of the feature vectors for optimal classification of closed 2D images. In this paper, a new method for selecting the optimal bispectral feature vectors based on the variances of the feature vectors. The experimental results are presented using eight different shapes of aircraft images, the feature vectors of the bispectrum from five to fifteen and an weighted mean fuzzy classifier.
A new MR angiography technique using a composite sequence for the suppression of static sample signals is proposed and verified with experiments. When the composite [$90^{\circ}-{\tau}-180^{\circ}-2{\tau}-180^{\circ}-{\tau}$] sequence is applied, the large signal from the static sample is sufficiently suppressed but the signal from fresh inflow sample of which amplitude. is observed without suppression. These properties are appropriate for angiographic applications. In this paper, a modified line scan method (Block line scan angiography) incorporated with the composite [$90^{\circ}-{\tau}-180^{\circ}-2{\tau}-180^{\circ}-{\tau}$] sequence is used to obtain flow-only images, i.e., angiograms. The block line scan method improves the resolution in the flow-direction at the expense of imaging time. With the composite sequence, there is no need for subtraction procedure as in the most conventional angiographic methods. Experimental results for a phantom and a normal volunteer with KAIS 2.0 Tesla MRI system are shown.

A camera-based real-time hand posture and gesture recognition system is proposed for controlling various devices inside automobiles. It uses an imaging system composed of a camera with a proper filter and an infrared lighting device to acquire images of hand-motion sequences. Several steps of pre-processing algorithms are applied, followed by a background normalization process before segmenting the hand from the background. The hand posture is determined by first separating the fingers from the main body of the hand and then by finding the relative position of the fingers from the center of the hand. The beginning and ending of the hand motion from the sequence of the acquired images are detected using pre-defined motion rules to start the hand gesture recognition. A set of carefully designed features is computed and extracted from the raw sequence and is fed into a decision tree-like decision rule for determining the hand gesture. Many experiments are performed to verify the system. In this paper, we show the performance results from tests on the 550 sequences of hand motion images collected from five different individuals to cover the variations among many users of the system in a real-time environment. Among them, 539 sequences are correctly recognized, showing a recognition rate of 98%.

This paper focuses on lossy medical image compression methods for medical images that operate on three-dimensional(3-D) irreversible integer wavelet transform. We offer an application of unbalanced tree structure algorithm to medical images, using a 3-D unbalanced wavelet decomposition and a 3-D unbalanced spatial dependence tree. The wavelet decomposition is accomplished with integer wavelet filters implemented with the lifting method. We have tested our encoder on volumetric medical images using different integer filters and 16 coding unit size. The coding unit sizes of 16 slices save considerable dynamic memory(RAM) and coding delay from full sequence coding units used in previous works. If we allow the formation of trees of different lengths, then we can accomodate more transaxial scales than three. Then the encoder and decoder can then keep track of the length of the tree in which each pixel resides through the sequence of decompositions. Results show that, even with these small coding units, our algorithm with I(5,3)filter performs as well and better in lossy coding than previous coding systems using 3-D integer unbalanced wavelet transforms on volumetric medical images.
Objective : The cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) pulsates within the craniospinal axis in response to rhythmic cerebral blood volume variation during the cardiac cycle. The aim of this study is to characterize the normal and abnormal CSF flow and its waveforms in the cervical spinal subarachnoid space. Methods : The magnetic resonance(MR) images were obtained with 1.5 T(GE Signa, GE Medical Systems, Milwaukee, USA) unit using the 2 dimensional cine PC(phase contrast) sequence with cardiac gating and gradient recalled echo imaging. This pulse sequence yielded 16 quantitative flow-encoded images per cardiac cycle. Sagittal and axial images of the cervical spinal CSF space were obtained, and target sites were analyzed for characteristic CSF flow (TR=50ms, TE=12.5-15ms). The region of interest(ROI) was 1mm 3 in volume. Twenty six persons were included in this study : 10 healthy volunteers and 16 patients with cervical myelopathy. The post-operative cine MR study were also done in five patients. Results : The normal CSF pulsation dynamics in the cervical spine showed discrete systolic and diastolic components. The CSF flow revealed a sine wave pattern, in which the systolic phase was shorter than the diastolic phase(ratio=2 : 3). The patient group revealed decreased amplitudes of the CSF flow and irregularly distored flow waves. The systolic phase was elongated in the ROI above the stenotic level, whereas the diastolic phase was lengthened below the level. In the postoperative images, the abnormal pattern and amplitude were found to be corrected. Conclusion : From these results, the authors believe that the CSF flow study provides valuable informations regarding the extent of cervical stenosis and may be useful for the surgical planning and post-operative evaluation.

This study was performed to demonstrate the effect of linear or nonlinear contrast enhancement on subtraction images. Three different textures were radiograped on dental film. The first radiograph was taken without the presence of an object. the second, which showed trabucular bone, was taken of the molar area of a human. the third radiograph was taken of the coronal part of molars. Each film was digitized into a 1312 x 1024 pixel x 8 bit depth matrix by means of a Nikon 35 mm film scanner(LS-3510AF, Japan) with fixed gain and internal dark current correction to maintain constant illumination. The scanner was interfaced to a Macintosh Le ill computer(Apple Computer, Charlotte, N.C) This resulted in three pairs of images, including different textures-plain, bone and enamel. Digital regular, linearly and nonlinearly enhanced subtraction was performed. Computer software was ,used to simulate lesions in the shape of a 2D-Gaussian curve on each of a pair of images. The each subtraction images were presented in a random sequence to two groups of 10 observers(students and dentists). ROC analysis was used to compare observer performance. The following results were obtained ; 1. All of LCE subtraction, equalized subtraction and regular subtraction images of plain texture were diagnosed the best by far. 2. The data revealed a siginificant LCE effect in both the student group and the expert group. 3. Clinical expertise was a helphul factor for the observers in this study.
