  • There is a growing interest this paper for ocean sensing where autonomous vehicles can play an essential role in assisting engineers, researchers, and scientists with environmental monitoring and collecting oceanographic data. This study was conducted to develop a rigid sail for the autonomous sailing drone. Our study aims to numerically analyze the aerodynamic characteristics of curvy twin sail and compare it with wing sail. Because racing regulations limit the sail shape, only the two-dimensional geometry (2D) was open for an optimization. Therefore, the first objective was to identify the aerodynamic performance of such curvy twin sails. The secondary objective was to estimate the effect of the sail's spacing and shapes. A viscous Navier-Stokes flow solver was used for the numerical aerodynamic analysis. The 2D aerodynamic investigation is a preliminary evaluation. The results indicated that the curvy twin sail designs have improved lift, drag, and driving force coefficient compared to the wing sails. The spacing between the port and starboard sails of curvy twin sail was an important parameter. The spacing is 0.035 L, 0.07 L, and 0.14 L shows the lift coefficient reduction because of dramatically stall effect, while flow separation is improved with spacing is 0.21 L, 0.28 L, and 0.35 L. Significantly, the spacing 0.28 L shows the maximum high pressure at the lower area and the small low pressure area at leading edges. Therefore, the highest lift was generated.

  • Silicon (Si) is the second most abundant element in the crust and consists of three stable isotopes, 28Si (92.23%), 29Si (4.67%), and 30Si (3.10%). Si isotopes are widely studied worldwide as a proxy for the biogeochemical cycle of Si to reconstruct the paleoenvironment and paleoclimate. However, in Korea, there have been no studies on biogenic silica using Si isotopes. In this study, we carried out Si isotope measurements of giant diatoms, summarizing the previously reported alkali fusion methods and establishing the best Si separation method for biogenic silica. Samples were completely digested using alkali fusion at high temperatures, effectively separating Si using an AG® 50W-X8 cation exchange resin. To evaluate the precision and accuracy of our measurements, Si isotope standard material (NBS-28) and USGS reference materials (AGV-2, GSP-2, BHVO-2) were analyzed. The results are in excellent agreement with the reported values within the acceptable error. The Si isotope measurement method developed in this study is expected to help in understanding the paleoclimate and paleoenvironment by tracing the Si cycle.

  • This study attempted to establish an optimal multi-compound simultaneous analysis method that can secure reliable results for 15 - preservatives, 2 - sun screens and 1 - antioxidants of cosmetics using HPLC-PDA. Since the potential of hydrogen (pH) in the mobile phase affects the acid dissociation constant (pKa) of the preservatives, and the peak retention time shift and area change were observed. The peak separation condition was established by adjusting the pH to 0.1% H3PO4 addition (mL) when preparing the mobile phase. As a results of method validation, the linearity correlation coefficient (R2) of above 0.999 were obtained, and accuracy 87.9 ~ 101.1%, 0.1 ~ 7.6% precision for two types of cosmetics (cream and shampoo). It was found that the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.1 ~ 0.2 mg/kg and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) was 2.0 ~ 4.0 mg/kg. In addition, it was possible to simultaneously separate p-anisic acid, a natural compound that was difficult to separate in HPLC due to the small difference from methylparaben, a synthetic preservatives. Through this study, it will be effectively used to secure quality control and safety for compound that need restrictions on use cosmetics.

  • Objective: The aim was to study the influence of cooling milk at 9℃ at the farm versus keeping it at 20℃ on Parmigiano Reggiano cheese lipolysis. Methods: A total of six cheesemaking trials (3 in winter and 3 in summer) were performed. In each trial, milk was divided continuously into two identical aliquots, one of which was kept at 9℃ (MC9) and the other at 20℃ (MC20). For each trial and milk temperature, vat milk (V-milk) and the resulting 21 month ripened cheese were analysed. Results: Fat and dry matter and fat/casein ratio were lower in MC9 V-milk (p≤0.05) than in MC20. Total bacteria, mesophilic lactic acid and psychrotrophic and lipolytic bacteria showed significant differences (p≤0.05) between the two V-milks. Regarding cheese, fat content resulted lower and crude protein higher (p≤0.05) both in outer (OZ) and in inner zone (IZ) of the MC9 cheese wheels. Concerning total fatty acids, the MC9 OZ had a lower concentration of butyric, capric (p≤0.05) and medium chain fatty acids (p≤0.05), while the MC9 IZ had lower content of butyric (p≤0.05), caproic (p≤0.01) and short chain fatty acids (p≤0.05). The levels of short chain and medium chain free fatty acids (p≤0.05) were lower and that of long chain fatty acids (p≤0.05) was higher in MC9 OZ cheese. The principal component analysis of total and free fatty acids resulted in a clear separation among samples by seasons, whereas slight differences were observed between the two different milk temperatures. Conclusion: Storing milk at 9℃ at the herd affects the chemical composition of Parmigiano Reggiano, with repercussion on lipolysis. However, the changes are not very relevant, and since the cheese can present a high variability among the different cheese factories, such changes should be considered within the "normal variations" of Parmigiano Reggiano chemical characteristics.

  • It is important to determine the concentration of long-lived radionuclides (e.g., 129I) in nuclear waste to ensure safety when handling it. To analyze nuclides in a solid sample (e.g., concrete and soil), it is essential to effectively separate and purify the nuclides of interest in the sample. This study reports the comprehensive efforts made to validate the analytical procedure for 129I detection in solid samples, using a high-temperature combustion furnace. 129I volatilized from the sample collected in 0.01 M HNO3 solution with a reducing agent (e.g., NaHSO3) and was rapidly measured by ICP-MS. Analytical conditions, such as pyrolysis temperature and types of mobile phase gas, catalyst, and trapping solution, were optimized to obtain a high recovery rate of spiked 129I. Finally, the optimized method was applied for the simultaneous analysis of other volatile radionuclides, such as 3H and 14C. The performance test results for the optimized method confirmed that the LSC (for 3H and 14C) and ICP-MS (for 129I) measurements, with the separation of volatile nuclides using a high-temperature combustion furnace, were reliable.

  • In this study, defects generated in the YSZ coating layer of the IN738LC turbine blade are investigated using an optical microscope and SEM/EDS. The blade YSZ coating layer is composed of a Y-Zr component top coat layer and a Co component bond coat layer. A large amount of Cr/Ni component that diffused from the base is also measured in the bond coat. The blade hot corrosion is concentrated on the surface of the concave part, accompanied by separation of the coating layer due to the concentration of combustion gas collisions here. In the top coating layer of the blade, cracks occur in the vertical and horizontal directions, along with pits in the top coating layer. Combustion gas components such as Na and S are contained inside the pits and cracks, so it is considered that the pits/cracks are caused by the corrosion of the combustion gases. Also, a thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer of several ㎛ thick composed of Al oxide is observed between the top coat and the bond coat, and a similar inner TGO with a thickness of several ㎛ is also observed between the bond coat and the matrix. A PFZ (precipitate free zone) deficient in γ' (Ni3Al) forms as a band around the TGO, in which the Al component is integrated. Although TGO can resist high temperature corrosion of the top coat, it should also be considered that if its shape is irregular and contains pore defects, it may degrade the blade high temperature creep properties. Compositional and microstructural analysis results for high-temperature corrosion and TGO defects in the blade coating layer used at high temperatures are expected to be applied to sound YSZ coating and blade design technology.

  • As interest in microsatellites increases, research has been actively conducted recently on the performance and use, as well as the orbital design and deployment techniques, for the microsatellite constellations. The purpose of this study was to investigate orbital deployment techniques using thrust and differential atmospheric drag control (DADC) for the Walker-delta constellation. When using thrust, the time and thrust required for orbital deployment vary, depending on the separation speed and direction of the satellite with respect to the launch vehicle. A control strategy to complete the orbital deployment with limited performance of the propulsion system is suggested and it was analyzed. As a result, the relationship between the deployment period and the total thrust consumption was derived. It takes a relatively longer deployment time using differential air drag rather than consuming thrusts. It was verified that the satellites can be deployed only with differential air drag at a general orbit of a microsatellite constellation. The conclusion of this study suggests that the deployment strategy in this paper can be used for the microsatellite constellation.

  • The treated water inside the ballast electrolytic cell creates a highly alkaline atmosphere due to hydroxide generated at the DSA(Dimension Stable Anode) electrode during electrolysis. In this study, a composite material that can replace the weakness of the PE-coated steel pipe used in the existing ballast pipe was prepared. The test samples are BRE(Basalt fiber reinforced epoxy), BRP(Basalt fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester), GRE(Glass fiber reinforced epoxy), and GRP(Glass fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester). And then it was immersed in NaOH for 720 hours. The friction test of each specimen was conducted. The Friction coefficient analysis according to material friction depth and interfacial adhesion behavior between resin and fiber were analyzed. As a result, the mechanism of interfacial separation between resin and fiber could be analyzed. In the case of the unsaturated polyester resin with low interfacial bonding strength the longer the immersion time in the alkaline solution, the faster the internal deterioration caused by the deterioration that started from the surface, resulting in a decrease in the friction coefficient. It is hoped that this study will help to understand the degradation behavior of composite materials immersed in various chemical solutions such as NaOH, acid, and sodium hypochlorite in the future.

  • Antarctic Environmental Monitoring Handbook' was published by COMNAP/SCAR in 2000. The standardized method described in this handbook is recommended for monitoring of antarctic environment. High pressure bomb technique in this guide was used to decompose soil samples. In compliance with this guide book, high pressure bomb technique was applied to decompose the antarctic soil sampled at the King Sejong Station. An Isotope Dilution-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ID-ICP-MS) was applied to determine mass concentrations of Pb, Cu and Zn in the soil. The accuracy in this method was verified by the analysis of certified reference materials (CRM) of NIST 2702 (marine sediment). The analytical results agreed with certified value within the range from 99.5~100.8%. Matrix separation was necessitated for the determination of Cu and Zn by Chelex 100 ion exchange resin. As a result, the average mass concentrations of Pb, Cu and Zn which are suspected to be caused by anthropogenic pollution were 332.9 mg/kg, 95.6 mg/kg and 115.3 mg/kg, respectively. Those for the metals sampled in the soils of the remote regions from the station were 28.1 mg/kg, 101.8 mg/kg and 115.6 mg/kg, respectively.

  • In this study, the flow characteristics of the sea region, where tidal current and shock waves are combined, are identified using a three-dimensional numerical model (Princeton Ocean Model, POM). The model is adopted and applied for simulating the flows of the sea region near the open sections during the seadike closure work of Sihwa Seadike which was closed in 1994. The simulation results show that the shock waves with high velocities propagate through the sections toward the inside and outside of the seadike during the periods of the spring and ebb tides, respectively. It is found that the phenomena of flow separation occur near the shock waves; as the shock waves extend to wider zones after passing the sections, their effects on the tidal current become weak. In addition, the longitudinal velocity profiles of the flows are revealed to be affected by the shock waves. For all the simulations, at the ebb tide, the drawdown of the water levels occurs in front of the open section, respectively, especially, hydraulic jump occurs when simulating the case of maximum difference in water level between the inside and outside of the seadike. As a result, it is thought that the flow characteristics of the sea region dominated by shock waves need to be identified employing three-dimensional analysis approach, which is expected to provide the information for ocean engineering works and facility management.
