Detection and Analysis of the Liver Area and Liver Tumors in CT Scans (CT 영상에서의 간 영역과 간 종양 추출 및 분석)

  • In Korea, hepatoma is the thirdly frequent cause of death from cancer occupying 17.2% among the whole deaths from cancer and the rate of death from hepatoma comes to about 21's persons per one-hundred thousand ones. This paper proposes an automatic method for the extraction of areas being suspicious as hepatoma from a CT scan and evaluates the availability as an auxiliary tool for the diagnosis of hepatoma. For detecting tumors in the internal of the liver from CT scans, first, an area of the liver is extracted from about $45{\sim}50's$ CT scans obtained by scanning in 2.5-mm intervals starting from the lower part of the chest. In the extraction of an area of the liver, after unconcerned areas outside of the ribs being removed, areas of the internal organs are separated and enlarged by using intensity information of the CT scan. The area of the liver is extracted among separated areas by using information on position and morphology of the liver. Since hepatoma is a hypervascular turner, the area corresponding to hepatoma appears more brightly than the surroundings in contrast-enhancement CT scans, and when hepatoma shows expansile growth, the area has a spherical shape. So, for the extraction of areas of hepatoma, areas being brighter than the surroundings and globe-shaped are selected as candidate ones in an area of the liver, and then, areas appearing at the same position in successive CT scans among the candidates are discriminated as hepatoma. For the performance evaluation of the proposed method, experiment results obtained by applying the proposed method to CT scans were compared with the diagnoses by radiologists. The evaluation results showed that all areas of the liver and liver tumors were extracted exactly and the proposed method has a high availability as an auxiliary diagnosis tools for the discrimination of liver tumors.

Approaching Method for Detecting Vessels in the Korean Waters using the Panchromatic Imagery of IRS-1C Satellite (Panchromatic 위성 자료를 이용한 선박 확인의 접근 기법)

  • The feasibility of counting number of small vessels and position in Korean waters using the panchromatic imageries derived from the IRS-1C was tested. The parameters for interpretation of satellite's imageries of small vessels were location(position), size, shape, shadow, tone, texture and pattern, height and depth, situation and association with other vessels. The position of small vessels in the sea without GCP(ground control point) was considered to be inclusive in the satellite imagery with 35 km semi-diameter, denoting rough geographical position of the vessel. The size of vessel was measured by length from stem to stern of the vessel, distinguished by following wave on the surface water. Offshore fishing vessels were separated from merchant ships by their length smaller than 100 m. The shape of vessels on panchromatic imagery of IRS-1C appeared just streamline. In case of clouds which were similar to the shape of small vessels, we were able to distinguish between vessel and cloud by shadow of cloud in the water surface. The tone of sea surface was dark black while small vessel appeared bright white. Small vessel was distinguished from the rough texture of the sea surface and the regular pattern of the waves with white capes when weather was not so good. The situation of the fishing activity was estimated by information of fishing method related to the fishing boat such as the pair trawl in the Yellow Sea.

Profile Position Control of Extractive Thermally Coupled Distillation System (추출 열 통합 증류계의 프로필 위치 제어)

  • Extractive distillation system can be used when the components to be separated have close boiling points or form azeotropes. Extractive distillation is one of the most important and widely used separation methods in chemical process industry. The main disadvantage of the distillation is its high-energy requirements. Thermally coupled distillation system (TCDS) can provide significant savings in energy consumption and capital cost over the operation of sequences based on conventional distillation column. Despite such advantages of the thermally coupled distillation system, the process is not widely used in industry because control and operation of the column are difficult. In this study, we propose several control schemes for thermally coupled distillation system to overcome the difficulties and make the column stable when the process is confronted with feed disturbances. Profile position control scheme shows best control performance among the proposed control schemes.

Dynamics of Digital Location and Geographical Distance on Cyberspace (글로벌 사이버 공간에서 디지털 위치와 지리적 거리에 관한 연구)

  • New communication and information technologies such as the Internet are space-adjusting technologies. The Internet changes the spatial proximity by improving the connections between people and organizations separated by geographical distance This paper examines the digital position of individual nation-states on a global cyberspace. The number of inter-domain hyperlinks embedded in websites for 47 nations was gathered using the AltaVista in 2001 Data were also obtained on the geographical distance among the nations. The results indicate that the u.s. is the most central nation on the global cyberspace, followed by the U.K., Germany, Australia, Canada, Italy, France, China and Japan. The most peripheral nations are Uruguay, Luxemburg, and UAE. It also examines the relationship between the digital positions of 47 nations and their physical locations. The results indicate that digital structure on the cyberspace is not significantly related to geographical distance among those nations.

Mission Orbit Design of CubeSat Impactor Measuring Lunar Local Magnetic Field

  • The current study designs the mission orbit of the lunar CubeSat spacecraft to measure the lunar local magnetic anomaly. To perform this mission, the CubeSat will impact the lunar surface over the Reiner Gamma swirl on the Moon. Orbit analyses are conducted comprising ${\Delta}V$ and error propagation analysis for the CubeSat mission orbit. First, three possible orbit scenarios are presented in terms of the CubeSat's impacting trajectories. For each scenario, it is important to achieve mission objectives with a minimum ${\Delta}V$ since the CubeSat is limited in size and cost. Therefore, the ${\Delta}V$ needed for the CubeSat to maneuver from the initial orbit toward the impacting trajectory is analyzed for each orbit scenario. In addition, error propagation analysis is performed for each scenario to evaluate how initial errors, such as position error, velocity error, and maneuver error, that occur when the CubeSat is separated from the lunar orbiter, eventually affect the final impact position. As a result, the current study adopts a CubeSat release from the circular orbit at 100 km altitude and an impact slope of $15^{\circ}$, among the possible impacting scenarios. For this scenario, the required ${\Delta}V$ is calculated as the result of the ${\Delta}V$ analysis. It can be used to practically make an estimate of this specific mission's fuel budget. In addition, the current study suggests error constraints for ${\Delta}V$ for the mission.

Molecular Phylogenetic Analyses of Scyliorhinus torazame (Carcharhiniformes) Inferred from Cu,Zn Superoxide Dismutase (두툽상어(Scyliorhinus torazame) Cu,Zn-SOD의 분자 계통학적 분석)

  • Copper,zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu,Zn-SOD) plays a key role to the first antioxidant defense system against oxidative stress in diverse aerobic organisms. Due to the housekeeping action of Cu,Zn-SOD, it was reported that the structure and function have been conserved during evolution. In this study Cu,Zn-SOD from cloudy catshark Scyliorhinus torazame was subjected to phylogenetic analyses to know its evolutionary relationship in the vertebrate lineage. Molecular phylogenetic trees inferred by NJ, MP, ML and/or Bayesian analyses showed two shark species, Prionace glauca and S. torazame grouped together with high statistical supports. In general, they placed at the separated position from bony vertebrates. Thereafter, bony vertebrates composed of teleosts and birds/mammals (amniotes) formed a monophyletic group. Each teleost and amniote clade was also supported by relatively high statistical values. These phylogenetic relationships are well congruent with the phylogenetic hypothesis of the ancestral position of cartilaginous fishes to bony vertebrates.

Molecular Phylogenetic Position of Abbottina springeri (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) Based on Nucleotide Sequences of RAG1 Gene (RAG1 유전자의 염기서열에 기초한 왜매치 Abbottina springeri (잉어목, 잉어과)의 분자계통학적 위치)

  • Partial nucleotide sequences of nuclear protein-coding recombination activating gene 1 (RAG1) gene of two Abbottina and five Microphysogobio species residing in Korea were analyzed to elucidate the molecular phylogenetic position of A. springeri Banarescu and Nalbant. In RAG1 tree A. rivularis was clearly separated from the monophyletic lineage composed of A. springeri, Biwia zezera and Microphysogobio species. Within this lineage B. zezera showed sister-group relationship to the monophyletic group composed of A. springeri and five Microphysogobio species. Thus, our phylogenetic tree revealed the polyphyletic nature of two Abbottina species from Korea, which result is well congruent with the previous phyletic assumption based on osteological features. The current classification of Abbottina and Microphysogobio based on morphological criteria, such as the presence or absence of papillae on lips and size of swim bladder with or without encapsulation, does not reflect their true evolutionary history.

A Shadow Mapping Technique Separating Static and Dynamic Objects in Games using Multiple Render Targets (다중 렌더 타겟을 사용하여 정적 및 동적 오브젝트를 분리한 게임용 그림자 매핑 기법)

  • To identify the location of the object and improve the realism in 3D game, shadow mapping is widely used to compute the depth values of vertices in view of the light position. Since the depth value of the shadow map is calculated by the world coordinate, the depth values of the static object don't need to be updated. In this paper, (1) in order to improve the rendering speed, using multiple render targets the depth values of static objects stored only once are separated from those of dynamic objects stored each time. And (2) in order to improve the shadow quality in the quarter view 3D game, the position of the light is located close to dynamic objects traveled along the camera each time. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the experiments according to the different static and dynamics object configuration in 3D game.

The Flow Control by a Vertical Splitter Plate for a Square Prism near a Wall (벽면 근처에 놓인 정방형주의 수직 분할판에 의한 유동 제어)

  • The passive control by vertical splitter plate of fluid force acting on a square prism near a plane wall was studied by measuring of fluid force on the prism and by visualization of the flow field using PIV. The hight of the splitter plate was 10% of the square width. The experimental parameters were the attaching position of vertical splitter plate and the space ratios G/B to the prism height. Time variation of vorticity was most remarkable at 3.0B(B: prism height) position toward wake direction from the center of the prism. The point of inflection of average lift coefficient and Strouhal number on the prism were represented at the space ratio G/B=0.4~0.6 for the prism having vertical splitter plate. The drag of the prism was reduced average 5.0% with the space ratios by attaching the vertical splitter plate at the upper and rear corner on the prism. In this case, the size of the separated region on the upside of the prism was smaller than that of prism having no the splitter plate.

Effective indexing of moving objects for current position management in Road Networks (도로 네트워크 환경에서 이동 객체의 현재 위치 관리를 위한 효율적인 색인 기법)

  • Recently, advances in mobile communication and location identifying technology of the moving object is evolving. Therefore, the location-based services based on request for service have increased and a variety of the indexing for the position management of moving objects has been studied. Because the index based on Euclidean space are no restriction of movement, it is difficult to apply to the real world. Also, there is additional cost to find adjacent road segments in road networks-based indexing. Existing studies of fixed static objects such as buildings or hospitals are not considered. In this paper, we propose an efficient road networks-based indexing for management of current positions. The proposed indexing partitions road networks by grids and has integrated road connection informations and manage separated extra indexing for fixed static objects. Through the experiment, we show that the proposed indexing based on road networks improves the performance of operation for search or update than existing indexing.
