Performance Benefits of Virtual Path Tunneling for Control and Management Flows in the Broadband ATM Network

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance benefits of broadband ATM networks when the call control and management flows are separated from user data flows. The virtual path tunneling concept for control and management flows are applied to the same physical ATM networks. The behaviors of channel throughput and transfer delay are analyzed. It results that the proposed virtual short-cut paths can maintain the network being stable with acceptable bandwidth. They are very useful to provide the stable control and management capabilities for Internet and mobile applications in the broadband ATM networks. In our numerical results, the effective throughputs of the proposed virtual shout-ut channel are about three times than those of end-to-end user data channels with hop distances of 10, and about two times than those with hop distance of 5 when the link blocking probability increases to 0.1. It concludes that the effective channel bandwidth are greatly reduced down while physical links are not stable and user traffic flows are occasionally overflowed.

Helium-Air Exchange Flow with Fluids Interaction (유체간섭을 동반하는 헬륨과 공기의 치환류)

  • This paper describes experimental investigations of helium-air exchange flows through parti¬tioned opening and two-opening. Such exchange flows may occur following rupture accident of stand pipe in high temperature gas cooled reactor. A test vessel with the two types of small open¬ing on top of test cylinder is used for experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. In the case of exchange flow through the partitioned opening, flow passages of upward flow of the helium and downward flow of the air within the opening are separated by vertical partition, and the two flows interact out of entrance and exit of the opening. Therefore, an experiment of the exchange flow through two-opening is made to investigate effect of the fluids interaction of the partitioned opening sys¬tem. As a result of comparison of the exchange flow rates between the two types of the opening system, it is found that the exchange flow rate of the two-opening system is larger than that of the partitioned opening system due to absence of the effect of fluids interaction. Finally, the fluids interaction between the upward and downward flows through the partitioned opening is found to be an important factor on the helium-air exchange flow.

  • Turbo fan as an air moving device is widely used for its silent characteristics and high efficiency relative to the other centrifugal multi blade impeller. In general, turbo fan is installed with a scroll casing for energy conversion from kinetic one to pressure energy. However, a turbo fan without scroll casing is considered as a present model that is proposed model for compact design of a product In detail, the model has only 4 cutoffs as guiders for 4 separated outlets. Specially, equal distribution of flow rate generated by the model blower is main interest in this investigation. The optimal position of the guider is found by reducing abnormal flows such as reverse flow in each outlet.

Numerical Simulation of the Aeroacoustic Noise in the Separated Laminar Boundary Layer

  • The unsteady flow characteristics and the related noise of separated incompressible laminar boundary layer flows (Re$\sub$$\delta$/* = 614, 868, and 1,063) are numerically investigated. The characteristic lines of the wall pressure are examined to identify the primary noise source, related with the unsteady motion of the vortex at the reattachment point of the separation bubble. The generation and propagation of the vortex-induced noise in the separated laminar boundary layer are computed by the method of Computational Aero-Acoustics (CAA), and the effects of Reynolds number, Mach number and adverse pressure gradient strength are examined.

  • For the analysis of lifting surface at high angle of attack, a Nonlinear Vortex Lattice Method(NLVLM) was used. The NLVLM is intented to compute the interactions between lifting surfaces and separated vertical flow. The lifting surfaces are represented by a lattice of discrete vortex rings. And wakes are represented by families of non-lintersecting, semi-infinite vortex line segments. The image method also used to analyze the ground effect. It is found that vortex lines separated from lifting surfaces represent the separated flows successfully. Although the present method is applied for the rectangular wing and delta wing, extensions can be possible for the arbitrary lifting surfaces. The Present results show good agreement with experimental data.

  • When a body with slant angle behind its shoulder is moving at a high speed, the turbulent motion around the afterbody is generally associated with the flow separation, and determines the normal component of the drag. By changing the slant angle of the afterbody, the drag coefficients can be changed, drastically. Understanding and controlling the turbulent separated flows has significant importance for the design of optimal configuration of the moving bodies. In this paper, a new Large Eddy Simulation technique has been developed to investigate turbulent vortical motions around the afterbodies, using slant angle. By understanding the structure of the turbulent flow around the body, the new configuration of afterbodies is designed to reduce the drag of body, and the nonlinear effects, due to the interaction between the body configuration and the turbulent separated flows, are investigated by use of the developed LES technique.

By changing the slant angle of afterbody, there exists a critical angle at which the drag coefficients change drastically. Understanding and control of the turbulent separated flows are of significant importance for the design of optimal configuration of the moving bodies. In the present paper, a new Large Eddy Simulation technique has been developed to investigate turbulent vortical motions around the afterbodies with slant angle. By basis of understanding the structure of turbulent flaw around the body, the new configuration of afterbodies are designed to reduce the drag of body and the nonlinear effects due to the interaction between the body configuration and the turbulent separated flows are investigated by use of the developed LES technique.

  • This paper describes experimental investigations of helium-air exchange flow through openings with vertical partitions. Such exchange flows may occur following rupture accident of stand pipe in high temperature gas cooled reactor. Exchange flow rates are investigated experimentally by using partitioned opening and opening with extended partition to assess fluids interference of the exchange flow at the stand pipe rupture accident. A tests vessel with the two types of opening on top of test cylinder is used in the experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. Amplitude and progress of interference fringes of the flows are observed and used as a support in comparison with the exchange flow rates. Flow passages of upward flow of the helium and downward flow of the air for both two types of the opening are separated by inserted partition within the opening, but in the case of partitioned opening, unseparated flow is formed at the opening entrance and the two flows interface. The exchange flow rate for the partitioned opening is not greater than that of the opening with extended partition because of the fluids interference at the entrance of opening. Finally, the fluids interference at the opening entrance is found to be one of important factors on the helium-air exchange flow rate.

Such exchange flows may occur following rupture accident of stand pipe in high temperature gas cooled reactor. A test vessel with a small opening on top of test cylinder is used for experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. Flow measurements are made with the opening, for partition ratios H_p/H$_1$$ in the range 0 to 1. where H_p$ and H$_1$ are partition length and height of the opening. respectively. In the case of H_p/H$_1$$ of 0, flow passages of upward flow of the helium and downward flow of the air within the opening are unseparated (bidirectional), and the two flows interfere within the opening. The unseparated flow increases strength of flow resistance and therefore, the exchange flow rate is minimum through range of the partition ratios. Two flow zones, i.e., separated (unidirectional) flow zone and unseparated (bidirectional) flow zone, exist with increasing the partition length. The exchange flow rate increases with increasing the separated flow zone. It is found that a maximum exchange flow rate exists at H_p/H$_1$$ of 1. As a result of comparison of the exchange flow rates by changing the partition ratio, the fluids Interference in the unseparated zone is found to be an important factor on the helium-air exchange flow rate.

Influence of Unsteady Wake on Turbulent Separated Flows over a Backward-Facing Step (후향 계단 주위 난류 박리 유동에 대한 비정상 후류의 영향)

  • An experimental study was made of turbulent separated and reattaching flow over a backward-facing step, where unsteady wake was generated by a spoked-wheel type wake generator with cylindrical rods in front of the separated flow. The influence of unsteady wake was scrutinized in terms of the rotating speed of the wake generator (0$\leq$S $t_{H}$$\leq$0.4). A conditional averaging technique in corporation with SBF was employed to elucidate the influence of the unsteady wake on the large-scale vortical structures of the separated flow. Special attention was made during two-dimensional measurements of wall-pressure with or without unsteady wake. The wall-pressure fluctuations were used to predict dipole sound source by Curie's integral formula. It was found that the reduction of the dipole sound source was due to the reduction of turbulent kinetic energy by unsteady wake in the recirculation region.n.
