Application of model reduction technique and structural subsection technique on optimal sensor placement of truss structures

  • An optimal sensor placement (OSP) method based on structural subsection technique (SST) and model reduction technique was proposed for modal identification of truss structures, which was conducted using genetic algorithm (GA). The constraints of GA variables were determined by SST in advance. Subsequently, according to model reduction technique, the optimal group of master degrees of freedom and the optimal objective function value were obtained using GA in a case of the given number of sensors. Correspondingly, the optimal number of sensors was determined according to optimal objective function values in cases of the different number of sensors. The proposed method was applied on a scaled jacket offshore platform to get its optimal number of sensors and the corresponding optimal sensor layout. Then modal kinetic energy and modal assurance criterion were adopted to evaluate vibration energy and mode independence property. The experiment was also conducted to verify the effectiveness of the selected optimal sensor layout. The results showed that experimental modes agreed reasonably well with numerical results. Moreover the influence of the proposed method using different optimal algorithms and model reduction technique on optimal results was also compared. The results showed that the influence was very little.

  • Node layout optimization of structural wireless systems is investigated as a means to prolong the network lifetime without, if possible, compromising information quality of the measurement data. The trade-off between these antagonistic objectives is studied within a multi-objective layout optimization framework. A Genetic Algorithm is adopted to obtain a set of Pareto-optimal solutions from which the end user can select the final layout. The information quality of the measurement data collected from a heterogeneous WSN is quantified from the placement quality indicators of strain and acceleration sensors. The network lifetime or equivalently the network energy consumption is estimated through WSN simulation that provides realistic results by capturing the dynamics of the wireless communication protocols. A layout optimization study of a monitoring system on the Great Belt Bridge is conducted to evaluate the proposed approach. The placement quality of strain gauges and accelerometers is obtained as a ratio of the Modal Clarity Index and Mode Shape Expansion values that are computed from a Finite Element model of the monitored bridge. To estimate the energy consumption of the WSN platform in a realistic scenario, we use a discrete-event simulator with stochastic communication models. Finally, we compare the optimization results with those obtained in a previous work where the network energy consumption is obtained via deterministic communication models.

A Low Dark Current CMOS Image Sensor Pixel with a Photodiode Structure Enclosed by P-well

  • A low dark current CMOS image sensor (CIS) pixel without any process modification is developed. Dark current is mainly generated at the interface region of shallow trench isolation (STI) structure. Proposed pixel reduces the dark current effectively by separating the STI region from the photodiode junction using simple layout modification. Test sensor array that has both proposed and conventional pixels is fabricated using 0.18 m CMOS process and the characteristics of the sensor are measured. The result shows that the dark current of the proposed pixel is 0.93fA/pixel that is two times lower than the conventional design.

  • 반도체 방식의 capacitive type 지문인식센서의 신호처리를 위한 개선된 회로를 설계하였다. 최 상위 sensor plate가 지문의 굴곡을 감지한 capacitance의 변화를 전압의 신호로 전환하기위해서 charge-sharing 방식의 회로를 적용하였다. 지문센서 감도저하의 가장 큰 원인인 sensor plate에 존재하는 parasitic capacitance를 최소화하고 ridge와 valley 사이의 전압차를 향상시키기 위하여 기존과는 다른 아날로그버퍼회로를 설계하였다. 센서전압과 기준전압 신호를 비교하기 위해서 비교기를 설계하였으며, 센서어레이의 수직, 수평간 isolation 대책을 통하여 ESD 및 노이즈방지를 위한 설계를 제안하였다. 제안된 신호처리회로는 128${\times}$l44 pixel 규모의 회로로 구현되었다. 본 설계회로는 향후 생체인식을 이용한 정보보호용 지문인식 시스템에 응용될 수 있으리라본다.

  • 본 논문에서는 디지털 의료 영상 및 진단 분야 그리고 산업용으로도 활용 가능한 싱글 포톤 계수형 영상센서를 $0.18{\mu}m$ triple-well CMOS(Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) 공정을 사용하여 설계하였다. 설계된 Readout 칩용 싱글 픽셀은 디지털 X-ray 이미지 센서모듈을 간단화 하기 위해 단일 전원전압을 사용하였으며, Preamplifier의 출력 전압인 signal voltage(${\Delta}Vs$)를 크게 하기 위해 Folded Cascode CMOS OP amp를 이용한 Preamplifier를 설계하였으며, 기존의 Readout 칩 외부에서 인가하던 threshold voltage를 Readout 칩 내부에서 생성해 줄 수 있도록 Externally Tunable Threshold Voltage Generator 회로를 새롭게 제안하였다. 그리고, Photo Diode에서 발생하는 Dark Current Noise를 제거하기 위한 Dark Current Compensation 회로를 제안하였으며, 고속 counting이 가능하고, layout 면적이 작은 15bit LFSR(Linear Feedback Shift Resister) Counter를 설계하였다.

Low Cost Omnidirectional 2D Distance Sensor for Indoor Floor Mapping Applications

  • Modern distance sensing methods employ various measurement principles, including triangulation, time-of-flight, confocal, interferometric and frequency comb. Among them, the triangulation method, with a laser light source and an image sensor, is widely used in low-cost applications. We developed an omnidirectional two-dimensional (2D) distance sensor based on the triangulation principle for indoor floor mapping applications. The sensor has a range of 150-1500 mm with a relative resolution better than 4% over the range and 1% at 1 meter distance. It rotationally scans a compact one-dimensional (1D) distance sensor, composed of a near infrared (NIR) laser diode, a folding mirror, an imaging lens, and an image detector. We designed the sensor layout and configuration to satisfy the required measurement range and resolution, selecting easily available components in a special effort to reduce cost. We built a prototype and tested it with seven representative indoor wall specimens (white wallpaper, gray wallpaper, black wallpaper, furniture wood, black leather, brown leather, and white plastic) in a typical indoor illuminated condition, 200 lux, on a floor under ceiling mounted fluorescent lamps. We confirmed the proposed sensor provided reliable distance reading of all the specimens over the required measurement range (150-1500 mm) with a measurement resolution of 4% overall and 1% at 1 meter, regardless of illumination conditions.

  • The ultrasonic array sensor system, consisting of one transmitter and fourreceivers instead of the traditional combination of a transmitter and a receiver is proposed in order to identify the location of objects. From the theoretical analysis and the experimental results, it is found that this new array sensor system could derive the information on the position of objects accurately, while the traditional sensor system could provide only the informatioin on the distance to objects. This sensor system is used to develop a sonar-based local mapping algorithm. The local map is used to find the existence of possible gates, through which the mobile robots can pass, and to select the suitable one in order for the robots to reach the goal safely in the presence of obstacles. The performance of the proposed local map algorithm is demonstrated experimentally in a small working area with several obstacles. It is found that the quality of the resulting local map is sufficient for the avoidance of collisions between the robots and obstacles and for the selection of the suitable gate leading to the goal. It is also shown that the global map of the working area could be obtained by integrating several local maps constructed from different locations and that it matches the actual layout of the working area well.

  • Recently, great improvements have been made in developing autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) using stateof- the-art technologies for various kinds of sophisticated underwater missions. To meet increasing demands posed on AUVs, a powerful on-board computer system and an accurate sensor system with an well-organized control system architecture are needed. In this paper, a new control system architecture is proposed for AUV, ORCA (Oceanic Reinforced Cruising Agent) which is being currently developed by Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO). The proposed architecture uses a hybrid architecture that combines a hierarchical architecture and a behavior based control architecture with an evaluator for coordinating between the architectures. This paper also proposed a sensor fusion structure based on the definition of 4 categories of sensors called grouping and 5-step data processing procedure. The development of the AUV, ORCA involving the system architecture, vehicle layout, and hardware configuration of on-board system are described.

  • The Location Based Service is growing rapidly nowadays due to the universalization of the use for smartphone, therefore the location determination technology has been placed in an important position. This study suggests a method that can provide the estimate of users' location by using PDR method and smartphone geomagnetic sensor data. This method assists the measure of enhancing the accuracy of indoor localization. Moreover, it is to study ways to provide the exact indoor layout for evacuating the workers in emergency such as fires and natural disasters.

  • The result of damage detection from on-site measurements is commonly polluted by unavoidable measurement noises. It is widely recognized that this side influence could be reduced to some extent if the sensor placement was properly designed. Although many methods have been proposed to find the optimal number and location of mono-type sensors, the optimal layout of multi-type sensors need further investigation, because a network of heterogeneous sensors is commonly used in engineering. In this paper, a new criterion of the optimal placement for different types of sensors is proposed. A corresponding heuristic is developed to search for good results. In addition, Monte Carlo simulation is suggested to design a robust damage detection system which contains certain redundancies. The validity of these methods is illustrated by two bridge examples.
