  • Purpose: To continuously monitor soil and climatic properties, a data acquisition system (DAQ) was developed and tested in plum farms (Gyewol-ri and Haechang-ri, Suncheon, Korea). Methods: The DAQ consisted of a Raspberry-Pi processor, a modem, and an ADC board with multiple sensors (soil moisture content (SEN0193), soil temperature (DS18B20), climatic temperature and humidity (DHT22), and rainfall gauge (TR-525M)). In the laboratory, various tests were conducted to calibrate SEN0193 at different soil moistures, soil temperatures, depths, and bulk densities. For performance comparison of the SEN0193 sensor, two commercial moisture sensors (SMS-BTA and WT-1000B) were tested in the field. The collected field data in Raspberry-Pi were transmitted and stored on a web server database through a commercial communications wireless network. Results: In laboratory tests, it was found that the SEN0193 sensor voltage reading increased significantly with an increase in soil bulk density. A linear calibration equation was developed between voltage and soil moisture content depending on the farm soil bulk density. In field tests, the SEN0193 sensor showed linearity (R = 0.76 and 0.73) between output voltage and moisture content; however, the other two sensors showed no linearity, indicating that site-specific calibration is important for accurate sensing. In the long-term monitoring results, it was observed that the measured climate temperature was almost the same as website information. Soil temperature information was higher than the values measured by DS18B20 during spring and summer. However, the local rainfall measured using TR 525M was significantly different from the values on the website. Conclusion: Based on the test results obtained using the developed monitoring system, it is thought that the measurement of various parameters using one device would be helpful in monitoring plum growth. Field data from the local farm monitoring system can be coupled with website information from the weather station and used more efficiently.

  • The skin structure of sensor pod mounted on the exterior of aircraft can be exposed to the acoustic dynamic load and static load such as aerodynamic pressure and inertial load during flight. Fatigue life prediction of structural model under acoustic load should be performed and also differential stiffness of model modified by static load should be considered. The acoustic noise test spectrum of MIL-STD-810G was applied to the structural model and the stress response power spectral density (PSD) was calculated. The frequency response analysis was performed with or without prestress induced by inplane static load, and the response spectrum was compared. Time series data was generated using the calculated PSD, and the time and frequency domain fatigue life were predicted and compared. The variation of stress response spectrum due to static load and predicted fatigue life according to the different structural model considering mean stress were examined and decreasing fatigue life was observed in the model with prestress of compressive static load.

  • Shear connectors are generally used to link the slab and girders together in slab-on-girder bridge structures. Damage of shear connectors in such structures will result in shear slippage between the slab and girders, which significantly reduces the load-carrying capacity of the bridge. Because shear connectors are buried inside the structure, routine visual inspection is not able to detect conditions of shear connectors. A few methods have been proposed in the literature to detect the condition of shear connectors based on vibration measurements. This paper proposes a different dynamic condition assessment approach to identify the damage of shear connectors in slab-on-girder bridge structures based on power spectral density transmissibility (PSDT). PSDT formulates the relationship between the auto-spectral densities of two responses in the frequency domain. It can be used to identify shear connector conditions with or without reference data of the undamaged structure (or the baseline). Measured impact force and acceleration responses from hammer tests are analyzed to obtain the frequency response functions at sensor locations by experimental modal analysis. PSDT from the slab response to the girder response is derived with the obtained frequency response functions. PSDT vectors in the undamaged and damaged states can be compared to identify the damage of shear connectors. When the baseline is not available, as in most practical cases, PSDT vectors from the measured response at a reference sensor to those of the slab and girder in the damaged state can be used to detect the damage of shear connectors. Numerical and experimental studies on a concrete slab supported by two steel girders are conducted to investigate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach. Identification results demonstrate that damages of shear connectors are identified accurately and efficiently with and without the baseline. The proposed method is also used to evaluate the conditions of shear connectors in a real composite bridge with in-field testing data.

  • In this paper, we propose a method of recognizing emotions using PPG sensor which measures blood flow according to emotion. From the existing PPG signal, we use a method of determining positive emotions and negative emotions in the frequency domain through PSD (Power Spectrum Density). Based on James R. Russell's two-dimensional prototype model, we classify emotions as joy, sadness, irritability, and calmness and examine their association with the magnitude of energy in the frequency domain. It is significant that this study used the same PPG sensor used in wearable devices to measure the top four kinds of emotions in the frequency domain through image experiments. Through the questionnaire, the accuracy, the immersion level according to the individual, the emotional change, and the biofeedback for the image were collected. The proposed method is expected to be various development such as commercial application service using PPG and mobile application prediction service by merging with context information of existing smart phone.

  • In this paper, we describe a flow meter system for pulverized coal developed for the pulverizer-burner system of a boiler or blast furnace, which uses the density and the velocity of the granule flow. The granule flow density is measured by a sensor that detects the capacitance from the electrode on the surface of the piping system. The velocity of granule flow can be calculated using the distance between two pairs of built-in sensors in the flow direction, the time obtained from the sampling cycle using the correlation method between two waveforms of the sensors. The flow rate is calculated from the density and velocity of the granule flow. The reliability and accuracy of the flow meter system has been verified by comparing the data with the weight measured from a load-cell.

  • We analyzed the effects of the interface trap on the output characteristics of an inversion mode n-channel GaN Schottky barrier (SB)-MOSFET based on the Nit distribution using TCAD simulation. As interface trap number density (Nit) increased, the threshold voltage increased while the drain current density decreased. Under Nit=5.0×1010 cm-2 condition, the threshold voltage was 3.2 V for VDS=1 V, and the drain current density reduced to 2.4 mA/mm relative to the non-trap condition. Regardless of the Nit distribution type, there was an increase in the subthreshold swing (SS) following an increase in Nit. Under U-shaped Nit distribution, it was confirmed that the SS varied depending on the gate voltage. The interface fixed charge (Qf) caused an shift in the threshold voltage and increased the off-state current collectively with the surface trap. In summary, GaN SB-MOSFET can be a building block for high power UV optoelectronic circuit provided the surface state is significantly reduced.

  • An effective method of detecting inter-turn short circuits on round rotor windings is described. Shorted-turns can have significant effects on a generator and its performance. A method of detecting inter-turn short circuits on rotor windings is described. The approach used is to measure the rate of change of the air-gap flux density wave when the rotor is at operating speed and excitation is applied to the field winding. The inter-turn short circuits sensor for synchronous generator's field winding has been developed. The sensor, installed in the generator air-gap, senses the slot leakage flux of field winding and produces a voltage waveform proportional to the rate of change of the flux. For identification of reliability for sensor, a inter-turn short circuits test was performed at the West-Inchon combined cycle power plant on gas turbine generator and steam turbine generator. This sensor will be used as a detecting of shorted-turn for field winding of synchronous generator. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and operation of a sensitive inter-turn short circuits detector. In this paper, development of inter-turn short circuits sensor for field winding of synchronous generator and application in a field.

  • We propose a group-based security scheme for hierarchical wireless sensor networks. We model the network for secure routing with 3-tier sensor network comprised of three types of nodes: Base Station, Group Dominator and ordinary Sensor Nodes. Group-based deployment is performed using Gaussian (normal) distribution and show that more than 85% network connectivity can be achieved with the proposed model. The small groups with pre-shared secrets form the secure groups where group dominators form the backbone of the entire network. The scheme is devised for dealing with sensory data aggregated by groups of collocated sensors; i.e., local sensed data are collected by the dominating nodes and sent an aggregated packet to the base station via other group dominators. The scheme is shown to be light-weight, and it offers a stronger defense against node capture attacks. Analysis and simulation results are presented to defend our proposal. Analysis shows that robustness can significantly be improved by increasing the deployment density using both the dominating and/or ordinary sensor nodes.

  • Practical deployment methods for sensor nodes are demanding as applications using sensor nodes increase. In particular, node connectivity is crucial not only for the network longevity but also for direct impacts on sensing and data collection capability. Economic requirement at building sensor networks and often limited access for sensor fields due to hostile environment force to remain at random deployment from air. However, random deployment often result in lost connection problem and inefficient network topology issue due to node irregularity. In this paper, mixed deployment of key nodes that have better communication capability is proposed to support the original deployment into working in an efficient way. Node irregularity is improved by introducing mixed nodes and an efficient mixed node density is also analyzed. Simulation results show that the mixed deployment method has better performance than the existing deployment methods.

  • The duty-cycle synchronization among mobile sensor nodes with energy-harvesting is very important. The nodes should keep their duty-cycle same to others as much as possible because they have to cooperate each other and to consume energy efficiently. The distribution of node position in network affects not only node connectivity but also the active time of synchronized nodes, and it relates to network life-time finally. In this paper, we introduce a network topology change algorithm (TCA) for energy-harvesting mobile sensor networks based on self-synchronized duty-cycling. The algorithm tries to change a network topology into a balanced topology where the mobile sensor nodes are unified according to the density of the number of nodes. For TCA, both fluid flow algorithm and flock dispersion algorithm are proposed and they are evaluated through the simulation in agent based modeling language. TCA is applied to the energy-harvesting mobile sensor networks to improve the synchronization of duty-cycle and to reduce the variation of energy consumption among nodes.
