KEOP (Korea Enhanced Observing Period)-2004 intensive summer observation was carried out from 20 June to 5 July 2004 over the Southwestern part of the Korean peninsula. In this study, the effects of KEOP-2004 intensive observation data on the simulation of precipitation system are investigated using KLAPS (Korea Local Analysis and Prediction System) and PSU/NCAR MM5. Three precipitation cases during the intensive observation are selected for detailed analysis. In addition to the control experiments using the traditional data for its initial and boundary conditions, two sensitivity experiments using KEOP data with and without Jindo radar are performed. Although it is hard to find a clear and consistent improvement in the verification score (threat score), it is found that the KEOP data play a role in improving the position and intensity of the simulated precipitation system. The experiments started at 00 and 12 UTC show more positive effect than those of 06 and 18 UTC. The effect of Jindo radar is dependent on the case. It plays a significant role in the heavy rain cases related to a mesoscale low over Changma front and the landing of a Typhoon. KEOP data produce more strong difference in the 06/18 UTC experiments than in 00/12 UTC, but give more positive effects in 00/12 UTC experiments. One of the possible explanations for this is that : KEOP data could properly correct the atmosphere around them when there are certain amounts of data, while gives excessive effect to the atmospheric field when there are few data. CRA analysis supports this reasoning. According to the CRA (Contiguous Rain Area) analysis, KEOP data in 00/12 UTC experiments improve only the surrounding area, resulting in essentially same precipitation system so the effects remain only in each convective cell rather than the system itself. On the other hand, KEOP data modify the precipitation system itself in 06/18 UTC experiments. Therefore the effects become amplified with time integration.
This study was conducted to perform various sensitivity experiments using WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model in order to determine the effects of terrains of the Korean Peninsula and the land-sea thermal contrast on the formation and development of the convergent cloud band for the cases of 1 February 2012. The sensitivity experiments consist of the following five ones: CNTL experiment (control experiment), and TMBT experiment, BDMT experiment and ALL experiment that set the terrain altitude of Taeback Mountains and Northern mountain complex as zero, respectively, and the altitude of the above-mentioned two mountains as zero, and LANDSEA experiment that set to change the Korean Peninsula into sea in order to find out the land-sea thermal contrast effect. These experiment results showed that a cold air current stemming from the Siberian high pressure met the group of northern mountains with high topography altitude and was separated into two air currents. These two separated air currents met each other again on the Middle and Northern East Sea, downstream of the group of northern mountains and converged finally, creating the convergent cloud band. And these experiments suggested that the convergent cloud band located on the Middle and Northern East Sea, and the cloud band lying on the southern East sea to the coastal waters of the Japanese Island facing the East Sea, were generated and developed by different dynamical mechanisms. Also it was found that the topography of Taeback Mountains created a warm air advection region due to temperature rise by adiabatic compression near the coastal waters of Yeongdong Region, downstream of the mountains. In conclusion, these experiment results clearly showed that the most essential factor having an effect on the generation and development of the convergent cloud band was the topography effect of the northern mountain complex, and that the land-sea thermal contrast effect was insignificant.
The impacts of dynamic and thermodynamic schemes used in the Community Ice CodE (CICE), the Los Alamos sea ice model, on sea ice concentration, extent and thickness over the Arctic and Antarctic regions are evaluated. Using the six dynamic and thermodynamic schemes such as sea ice strength scheme, conductivity scheme, albedo type, advection scheme, shortwave radiation method, and sea ice thickness distribution approximation, the sensitivity experiments are conducted. It is compared with a control experiment, which is based on the fixed atmospheric and oceanic forcing. For sea ice concentration and extent, it is found that there are remarkable differences between each sensitivity experiment and the control run over the Arctic and Antarctic especially in summer. In contrast, there are little seasonal variations between the experiments for sea ice thickness. In summer, the change of the albedo type has the biggest influence on the Arctic sea ice concentration, and the Antarctic sea ice concentration has a greater sensitivity to not only the albedo type but also advection scheme. The Arctic sea ice thickness is significantly affected by the albedo type and shortwave radiation method, while the Antarctic sea ice thickness is more sensitive to sea ice strength scheme and advection scheme.
An optical fiber dislocation fusion humidity sensor coated with graphene quantum dots is investigated. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer is fabricated with three dislocated single-mode fibers with graphene quantum dots coating humidity-sensitive materials. Humidity response experiments showed a good linear response and high sensitivity with easy fabrication and low-cost materials. From 22% to 98% RH, the humidity response sensitivity of the sensor is 0.24 dB/% RH, with 0.9825 linearity. To investigate the cross-response of humidity and temperature, temperature response experiments are conducted. From 30 ℃ to 70 ℃, the results showed 0.02 dB/℃ sensitivity and 0.9824 linearity. The humidity response experimental curve is compared with the temperature experimental curve. The big difference between humidity sensitivity and temperature sensitivity is very helpful to solve the cross-response of humidity and temperature. The influence of temperature fluctuations in humidity measurements is not obvious.
The purpose of the study was to identify the characteristics of the pathogenic microorganism Actinobacillus actinorayceteracomitans. The experiments of this study consist of the decision of existence or nonexistence of Actinobacillus actinorayceterncoraitans in the air of dental clinics, the effect of sugar on the growth of Actinobacillus actinorayceteracoraitans, and the sensitivity of Actinobacillus actinoraycetemcoraitans to Fluorine and antibiotics. The results of the experiments are as follows. 1. Actinobaeillus actinornyceteracornitans did not exist in the air of 4 dental clinics in Seoul 2. The growth of Actinobacillus actinornycetemcornitans in the media containing glucose or sucrose was faster than in the media without these, and glucose was more effective than sucrose. 3. Actinobacillus actinomyceteracoraitans was not susceptible to Fluorine at concentration between 0 ppm and 300 ppm. 4. Order of sensitivity of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans to antobiotics was as follows: Tetracycline > Kanamycin > Ampicillin.

In this study, the design optimization of the automotive side member is performed to maximize the crash energy absorption efficiency per unit weight. Design parameters which seriously influence on the frontal crash performance are selected through the sensitivity analysis using the Plackett-Burman design method. And also the design variables, which are determined from the sensitivity analysis, are optimized by two methods. One is conventional approximate optimization method which uses the statistical design of experiments (DOE) and response surface method (RSM). The other is a methodology derived from previous work by the authors, which is called sequential design of experiments (SDOE), to reduce a trial and error procedure and to find an appropriate condition for using micro-genetic algorithm. The proposed optimization technique shows that the automotive side member structure can be designed considering the frontal crash performance.
To investigate the influences of the observational nudging and the analysis nudging on the WRF simulation for the heavy snowfall event in Yeongdong area on 26 February 2012, the sensitivity experiments in relation to nudging effects were conducted. We initially set the magnitude of nudging coefficient of $6.0{\times}10^{-4}s^{-1}$ to apply to the analysis nudging experiments and observational experiments. To select the optimized options for the observational nudging, the radius influence experiment was carried out with radii ranging from 10 to 25 km at 5 km intervals. Among the observational nudging experiments, the experiment, which was conducted with the option of the radius influence of 15 km and that of the nudging coefficient of $6.0{\times}10^{-4}s^{-1}$ (ONG exp.), showed a best result. As giving the nudging effect only directly on D1 and D2 brought about a better result for the analysis nudging, we set the analysis nudging experiment as above (ANG exp.). We compared and analyzed the results from the control experiment, ONG experiment, and ANG experiment to reveal nudging effects. It was found that the control experiment brought about a result that it overestimated its precipitation in comparison with the observation and failed to properly simulate the time zone of rainfall concentration. When either of the two nudging (observational and analysis nudging) was applied to the data assimilation, it brought about a better result than the control experiment. Especially the observational nudging led to a meaningful result for the wind field, while the analysis nudging had the best result for the precipitation distribution among the experiments.

Using computer in design is a trend in recent years. A good suspension model is depend on the carefully prepared data like joint connection points or spring stiffness, etc. Once a good computer model is obtained, a parametric study for spciffic suspension design factor, like a toe angle, can be done to obtain sensitivity information. Using this information, several important design parameters for a specific design factor can be identified. Once a design of experiments is done using computer models, the results can be used to approximate a function which can best represent the experimentation. An optimum solution of this function can be used to find an optimum design of a suspension system for a specific suspension design factor. Same method is again applied to other design factors iteratively until a good suspension system design is obtained.
In this paper, from a review of the size distribution of the bubbles during pool scrubbing obtained from experiments by EPRI, we apply the bubble size distributions to analyses on the decontamination factors of pool scrubbing via I-COSTA (In-Containment Source Term Analysis). We perform sensitivity studies of the bubble size on the various mechanisms of deposition of aerosol particles in pool scrubbing. We also perform sensitivity studies on the size distributions of the bubbles depending on the diameters at the nozzle exit, the molecular weights of non-condensable gases in the carrier gases, and the steam fractions of the carrier gases. We then perform analyses of LACE-ESPANA experiments and compare the numerical ~ results to those from SPARC-90 and experimental results in order to show the effect of the bubble size distributions.
The sensitivity factors and the error propagation factors are defined for the three-parameter ellipsometry (TPE). The sensitivity factor is useful for understanding the nature of the TPE measurements in connection with determination of the optical properties and the thickness of a film. On the other hand, the error propagation factors provide a quantitative tool for predicting the optimum condition for TPE experiments. Their usefulness is demonstrated for the passive film formed on nickel in aqueous solution.
