An improved multi-level(IML) optimization algorithm using automatic differentiation (AD) for multi-objective optimum design of framed structures is proposed in this paper. In order to optimize the steel frames under seismic load, two main objective functions need to be considered for minimizing the structural weight and maximizing the strain energy. For the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, multi-level optimization techniques using decomposition method that separately utilizes both system-level and element-level optimizations and an artificial constraint deletion technique are incorporated in the algorithm. And also to save the numerical efforts, an efficient reanalysis technique through approximated structural responses such as moments, frequencies, and strain energy with respect to intermediate variables is proposed in the paper. Sensitivity analysis of dynamic structural response is executed by AD that is a powerful technique for computing complex or implicit derivatives accurately and efficiently with minimal human effort. The efficiency and robustness of the IML algorithm, compared with a plain multi-level (PML) algorithm, is successfully demonstrated in the numerical examples.
This paper describes fabrication of relative type capacitive pressure sensor to be in great demand for many fields. The fabricated sensor consists of two parts` a sensing diaphragm and a pyrox glass cover. The sensor size is 4.5${\times}3.4mm$^{2})$ and 400$\mu$m thick. To improve the nonlinearity, this sensor is designed a rectangular silicon diaphragm with a center boss structure, and in order to improve the temperature characteristics of the sensor in a packaging process, the sensing element is mounted on the pyrex glass support. Some suggestions toward the design and fabrication of improved sensors have been presented. The zero pressure capacitance, Co of sensor is 26.57pF, and the change of capacitance, ${\Delta}$C is 1.55pF from 0Kgf/Cm$^{2}$ to 1Kgf/Cm$^{2}$ at room temperature. The nonlinearity of the sensor output with center boss diaphragm is 1.29%F.S., and thermal zero shift and thermal sensitivity shift is less than 1.43%F.S./$^{\circ}C$and 0.14% F.S./$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

The present paper considers the contact between energy-saving device of ice-class vessel and ice block. The main objective of this study is to clarify the tendency of the ice impact force and the structural response as well as interaction effects of them. The contact analysis is performed by using LS-DYNA finite element code. The main collision scenario is based on Finnish-Swedish ice class rules and a stern duct model is used as an energy-saving device. For the contact force, two modelling approaches are adopted. One is dynamic indentation model of ice block based on the pressure-area curve. The other is numerical material modelling by LS-DYNA. The authors investigated the sensitivity of the structural response against the ice contact pressure, the interaction effect between structure and ice block, and the influence of eccentric collision. The results of these simulations are presented and discussed with respect to structural safety.
This paper presents an explicit analytical iteration method for form-finding analysis of suspension bridges. By extending the conventional analytical form-finding method predicated on the elastic catenary theory, two nonlinear governing equations are derived for calculating the accurate unstrained lengths of the entire cable systems both the main cable and the hangers. And for the gradient-based iteration method, the derivation of explicit calculation for the Jacobian matrix while solving the nonlinear governing equation enhances the computational efficiency. The results from sensitivity analysis show well performance of the explicit Jacobian matrix compared with the traditional finite difference method. According to two numerical examples of long span suspension bridges studied, the proposed method is also compared with those reported approaches or the fundamental criterions in suspension bridge structural analysis, which eventually confirms the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach.
Powder injection molding is an important manufacturing technology to mass produce superalloy components with complex shape. Injection molding step is particularly important for realizing a desired shape, which requires much time and efforts finding the optimum process condition. Therefore computer aided engineering can be very useful to find proper injection molding conditions. In this study, we have conducted a finite element method based simulation for the spiral mold test of superalloy feedstock and compared the results with experimental ones. Sensitivity analysis with both of simulation and experiment reveals that the melt temperature of superalloy feedstock is the most important factor for the full filling of mold cavity. The FEM based simulation matches well the experimental results. This study contributes to the optimization of superalloy powder injection molding process.
A rational estimation of moisture distribution in structural concrete is vital for predicting the possible extent and rate of progression of impending degradation processes. The paper proposes a numerical scheme for analysing the evolution of moisture distribution in concrete subjected to wetting-drying exposure caused by intermittent periods of rainfall. The proposed paradigm is based on the stage wise implementation of non-linear finite element (FE) analysis, with each stage representing a distinct phase of a typical wet-dry cycle. The associated boundary conditions have been constituted to realize the influence of various meteorological elements such as rain, wind, relative humidity and temperature on the exposed concrete surface. The reliability of the developed scheme has been demonstrated through its application for the simulation of experimentally recorded moisture profiles reported in published literature. A sensitivity analysis has also been carried out to study the influence of critical material properties on simulated results. The proposed scheme is vital to the service life modelling of concrete structures in tropical climates which largely remain exposed to the action of alternating rains.
For material characterization of semi-solid materials, backward extrusion process, which has been used in forming of hollow-sectioned products, was analyzed by the upper bound analysis in the current study. The existing kinematically admissible velocity field was applied to steady state at which there was no change in the assumed regions of velocity field. For unsteady state, new velocity field, as a function of dead zone angle, was proposed. Through the whole analysis, fiction between die and workpiece was also considered. It has been studied how the process variables, such as friction factor and punch velocity, and material parameters, such as strength coefficient, strain rate sensitivity could affect on analysis results. Finally, by the comparison with the finite element analysis, the reliability and efficiency of the proposed velocity field were discussed.
To enhance the critical current of superconducting coil, the magnetic field experienced by superconductors in a coil should be minimized. This is true for both low $T_{c}$ and high $T_{c}$ superconductors, and the difference between the two lays in their isotropic/an-isotropic characteristics. In this paper, we propose a shape optimization algorithm to reduce radial magnetic field components in HTS solenoid to enhance the critical current of a solenoid. In the algorithm, finite element method and continuum shape design sensitivity formula were employed. The objective function is to minimize the maximum radial magnetic fields in a solenoid with a constraint of constant solenoid volume condition. In this paper, the details on algorithm are introduced and the calculated optimized shapes are presented.
To meet the requirements for accuracy, productivity and reliability of machine tools, it is necessary to evaluate the chatter-free machining performance and to improve the dynamic performance of machine tools. In order to perform dynamic design of machine tools reasonably and effectively, the joint parts must be modelled accurately because their characteristics affect significantly on the total characteristics of machine tool. In this paper, an approach which identifies the effect of joint parts on the performance of total machine tool structure was proposed. That uses the experimental modal analysis, the finite element method and the sensitivity analysis method. The effectiveness of this approach was confirmed by applying it to structures with bearing joints. And as a result of the application, the change of dynamic characteristics of bearing joints was indentified.
This paper describes the effects of air gap eccentricity in induction machines. Asymmetric electro-magnetic force caused by the frictional worn bearing, rotor misalignment and unbalanced rotor etc. generates an asymmetrical operation, vibration and electro-magnetic noise. The need for detection of these rotor eccentricities has pushed the development of monitoring methods with increasing sensitivity and noise immunity. In this paper, we focus on investigating the asymmetrical operation considering of unbalanced magnetic force in squirrel-cage induction motor with 380 [V], 7.5 [kW], 4P, 1,768 [rpm]. The effects of the rotor eccentricity, magnetic force are investigated by finite element method (FEM).
