In this paper, a finite element analysis based on the local approach concept to fracture in the continuum damage mechanics is performed to analyze ductile fracture in two dimensional quasi-static state. First an isotropic damage model based on the generalized concept of effective stress is proposed for structural materials in the context of large deformation. In this model, the stiffness degradation is taken as a measure of damage and so, the fracture phenomenon can be explained as the critical deterioration of stiffness at a material point. The modified Riks' continuation technique is used to solve incremental iterative equations. Crack propagation is achieved by removing critically damaged elements. The mesh size sensitivity analysis and the simulation of the well known shearing mode failure in plane strain state are carried out to verify the present formulation. As numerical examples, an edge cracked plate and the specimen with a circular hole under plane stress are taken. Load-displacement curves and successively fractured shapes are shown. From the results, it can be concluded that the proposed model based on the local approach concept in the continuum damage mechanics may be stated as a reasonable tool to explain ductile fracture initiation and crack propagation.

Reactor pressure vessel (RPV) under severe accident conditions accompanied by core melting is exposed to direct high-temperature thermal loads. Understanding the creep behavior of the material is one of the most important factors for evaluating the structural integrity at these conditions. While damage evaluation studies have been conducted on critical structures of nuclear power plants through finite element (FE) analyses considering creep behavior, for accurate creep damage evaluation, constitutive equations considered in the FE analyses may have different results depending on the time hardening and strain hardening models as well as the tertiary creep consideration. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the creep damage under severe accident conditions by using FE method for a representative domestic RPV material, SA508 Gr.3. The effect of material hardening models and constitutive equations which are the main variables were also investigated.

This paper presents a result of performance evaluation fur non-contact scanning probe microscopy with respect to the vibration characteristics of cantilevers with tips. One of the current issues of the scanning probe microscopy technology is to increase the measurement speed, which is closely tied with the dynamic characteristics of cantilevers. The primary concern in this research is to investigate the relation between the maximum possible speed of non-contact scanning probe microscopy and the dynamic characteristics of cantilevers. First, the finite element analysis is made fur the vibration characteristics of various cantilevers in use. The computed natural frequencies of the cantilevers are in good agreement with measured ones. Then, each cantilever is tested with topographic measurement for a standard sample with the scanning speed changed. The performances of cantilevers are analyzed along with the natural frequencies of cantilevers. Experiments are also performed to test the effects of how to attach cantilevers in the piezo-electric actuator. Finally, measurement sensitivity has been analyzed to enhance the performance of scanning probe microscopy.

An 80MHz surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based gyroscope utilizing a progressive wave was developed on a piezoelectric substrate. The developed sensor consists of two SAW oscillators in which one is used for sensing element and has metallic dots in the cavity between input and output IDTs. The other is used for a reference element. Coupling of mode (COM) modeling was conducted to determine the optimal device parameters prior to fabrication. According to the simulation results, the device was fabricated and then measured on a rate table. When the device was subjected to an angular rotation, oscillation frequency differences between the two oscillators were observed because of the Coriolis force acting on the metallic dots. Depending on the angular rate, the difference of the oscillation frequency was modulated. The obtained sensitivity was approximately 52.35 Hz/deg.s within the angular rate range of 0~1000 deg/s. The performances of devices with three IDT structures for two kinds of piezoelectric substrates were characterized. Good thermal stability was also observed during the evaluation process.

A linear synchronous motor (Linear Synchronous Motor, under LSM) is suitable for Maglev train. This is 500km/h or more for running high-speed propulsion system of high-efficiency, high-output characteristics. Also, as high-speed running, it is needed solution to reduce output ripple component cause bad riding like noise and vibration. So this paper was designed 500km/h-class Maglev train and analyzed characteristics of the LSM base model using finite element analysis method. Further, improved model is designed to improve characteristics of thrust and levitation force by enforcing design parameters analysis and sensitivity analysis. And it was applied skew on field in order to reduce the ripple component still remaining. Skew interpretation of the two-dimensional is proposed and this is verified by carrying out three-dimensional finite element analysis comparing two values. It proved to be valid of skew of the two-dimensional analysis.
The principle, design, and application of a gear-tooth sensor for the rough environmental conditions such as high temperatures of up to $150^{\circ}C$ are studied. The rotation of a tooth wheel is detected by a couple of Hall elements manufactured on the SIMOX wafer by a methode of differential detection using bipolar silicon technology. The product sensitivity of the Hall element is about 510 V/AT over a wide temperature range of $-40^{\circ}C{\sim}150^{\circ}C$. The differential Hall sensor makes the maximum possible distance between sensor and tooth wheel wider than that when single Hall element is used over a wide temperature range, and the maximum detectable distance is 4.5mm at driving current of 4mA.

Proximity magnetic sensor is able to detect the object target accurately in close range and it has been widely used in the underwater guided weapon system because there is no countermeasures from the target. In order to increase the damage of target by shock wave due to explosion of the underwater guided weapon system, the maximum detection range of the proximity magnetic sensor needs to be increased. In this paper, we describe the techniques of the optimum transmitting and receiving coils design using the Finite Element Method for the output power enhancement of the transmitter and the sensitivity improvement of the receiver. Finally, the proposed design techniques of the transmitter and the receiver were verified using a experimental setup and a prototype.

This paper presents the 3-dimensional electromagnetic field analysis method and correction of sensor distortion that is used by a motor speed sensor. The magnetic sensors are being expanded due to lower price than the other speed sensors such as resolver and encoder. Magnetic sensor generates sine and cosine waves when the motor rotates. However, the sine and cosine signals are distorted due to magnetic noise, which makes the angle error of the sensor, generated near by the Hall element. This paper defines an optimal design variables by using the Taguchi method to minimize output distortion of the magnetic sensor and permanent magnet. To enhance reliability of the magnetic position sensor from sensitivity error, assembly amplitude mismatch and the electrical angle, 3-Dimensional electromagnetic finite element method and correction algorithm errors were performed in due of the magnetic sensor in order to improve the quality of the initial production model.
Limited, noisy data in vibration testing is a hindrance to the development of structural damage detection. This paper presents a method for optimizing sensor placement and performing damage detection using finite element model updating. Sensitivity analysis of the modal flexibility matrix determines the optimal sensor locations for collecting information on structural damage. The optimal sensor locations require the instrumentation of only a limited number of degrees of freedom. Using noisy modal data from only these limited sensor locations, a method based on model updating and changes in the flexibility matrix successfully determines the location and severity of the imposed damage in numerical simulations. In addition, a steel cantilever beam experiment performed in the laboratory that considered the effects of model error and noise tested the validity of the method. The results show that the proposed approach effectively and robustly detects structural damage using limited, optimal sensor information.

Evaluating the impurity concentrations in semiconductor thin films using time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is an effective technique. The mass interference between isotopes and matrix element in data interpretation makes the process complex. In this study, we have investigated the doping concentration of phosphorus in, phosphorus doped silicon thin film on glass using ToF-SIMS in the dynamic mode of operation. To overcome the mass interference between phosphorus and silicon isotopes, the quantitative analysis of counts to concentration conversion was done following two routes, standard relative sensitivity factor (RSF) and SIMetric software estimation. Phosphorus doped silicon thin film of 180 nm was grown on glass substrate using hot wire chemical vapor deposition technique for possible applications in optoelectronic devices. Using ToF-SIMS, the phosphorus-31 isotopes were detected in the range of 101~104 counts. The silicon isotopes matrix element was measured from p-type silicon wafer from a separate measurement to avoid mass interference. For the both procedures, the phosphorus concentration versus depth profiles were plotted which agree with a percent difference of about 3% at 100 nm depth. The concentration of phosphorus in silicon was determined in the range of 1019~1021 atoms/cm3. The technique will be useful for estimating distributions of various dopants in the silicon thin film grown on glass using ToF-SIMS overcoming the mass interference between isotopes.
