  • In this paper, a new stacked element pressure sensor has proposed for heartbeat and respiration measurement. This device can be directly attached to an individual's chest; heartbeat and respiration are detected by the pulsatile vibration and deformation of the chest. A key feature of the device is the simultaneous measurement of heart rate and respiration. The structure of the sensor consists of two stacked elements, in which one element includes one polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) thin film bonded on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. In addition, for the measurement and signal processing, the electric circuit and the filter are simply constructed with an OP-amp, resistance, and a capacitor. One element (element1, PDMS) maximizes the respiration signal; the other (element2, PVDF) is used to measure heartbeat. Element1 and element2 had sensitivity of 0.163V/N and 0.209V/N, respectively, and element2 showed improved characteristics compared with element1 in response to force. Thus, element1 and element2 were optimized for measuring respiration heart rate, respectively. Through mechanical and vivo human tests, this sensor shows the great potential to optimize the signals of heartbeat and respiration compared with commercial devices. Moreover, the proposed sensor is flexible, light weight, and low cost. All of these characteristics illustrate an effective piezoelectric pressure sensor for heartbeat and respiration measurements.

  • A new method of multiple damage detection in beam like structures is introduced. The mode shapes of both healthy and damaged structures are used in damage detection process (DDP). Multiple Damage Localization Index Based on Mode Shapes (MDLIBMS) is presented as a criterion in detecting damaged elements. A finite element modeling of structures is used to calculate the mode shapes parameters. The main advantages of the proposed method are its simplicity, flexibility on the number of elements and so the accuracy of the damage(s) position(s), sensitivity to small damage extend, capability in prediction of required number of mode shapes and low sensitivity to noisy data. In fact, because of differential and comparative form of MDLIBMS, using noise polluted data doesn't have major effect on the results. This makes the proposed method a powerful one in damage detection according to measured mode shape data. Because of its flexibility, damage detection process in multi span bridge girders with non-prismatic sections can be done by this method. Numerical simulations used to demonstrate these advantages.

  • In this study, we try to compare different intensity measures for evaluating nonlinear response of bridge structure. This paper presents seismic analytic fragility of a three-span concrete girder highway bridge. A complete detail of bridge modeling parameters and also its verification has been presented. Fragility function considers the relationship of intensities of the ground motion and probability of exceeding certain state of damage. Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) has been subjected to the bridge from medium to strong ground motions. A suite of 20 earthquake ground motions with different range of PGAs are used in nonlinear dynamic analysis of the bridge. Complete sensitive analyses have been done on the response of bridge and also efficiency and practically of them are studied to obtain a proficient intensity measure for these types of structure by considering its sensitivity to the period of the bridge. Three dimensional finite element (FE) model of the bridge is developed and analyzed. The numerical results show that the bridge response is very sensitive to the earthquake ground motions when PGA and Sa (Ti, 5%) are used as intensity measure (IM) and also indicated that the failure probability of the bridge system is dominated by the bridge piers.

  • Recently, the need for slim type optical disk drive(ODD) has increased with popularization of lightweight notebook. Because of its lightweight and small structure, slim type ODD has low structural stiffness and it is weak to high-speed disk vibration. In this paper, Finite Element(FE) Model of slim type ODD is constructed and verified by experimental modal analysis. Additionally, sensitivity analysis is performed about structural parameters. As a result of sensitivity analysis, improved characteristic is verified by experiments using a sample of new model.

  • Finite element analysis along with DOE scheme has been performed to obtain robust design of connecting rod assembly. An analysis was conducted with five loading steps. Fatigue analysis was done using commercial software FEMFAT and fatigue safety factors at the interested regions such as shank area of small end and big end were calculated. 27 design cases using 3 factors with 3 levels are constructed by design of experiment. Each case is simulated to find the most influential factors. Response for this study, maximum Von-Mises stress, has been used to determine main factors of connecting rod assembly. Among the 3 factors, compression load affected the response greatly. However, bolt assembly load and width of shank flat area showed a little influence to the response. Interaction effects among factors considered did not occur. Connecting rod assembly considered in this study showed its sensitivity to the noise factor such as compression load rather than design factor such as width of flat shank area.

  • In building a finite element model of as automotive structure, the pillars and rockers are generally modeled as beam elemnts. The finite elemtns modeling using beam is faster and more efficient than that using shell elemetns. A joint is defined as theintersectio region of beam elemts and generally modeled with coupled rotational springs. In this study, hoint modeling technique is presented. First, the definitions of and anlaysis hypothesis for the joint are defined. Second the evaluation method of the joint stiffness from the static test is proposed. This method is simpler than existing evaluaiton methods. Third, the sensitivity analysis method and updating algorithm forjoint stiffness are presented. To verify these melthods, the finite element results of structural models with rigid joints and rotational spring joints are compared with experimental results.

  • Because of the inevitable uncertainties such as structural parameters, external excitations and measurement noises, the effects of uncertainties should be taken into consideration in structural damage detection. In this paper, two probabilistic structural damage detection approaches are proposed to account for the underlying uncertainties in structural parameters and external excitation. The first approach adopts the statistical moment-based structural damage detection (SMBDD) algorithm together with the sensitivity analysis of the damage vector to the uncertain parameters. The approach takes the advantage of the strength SMBDD, so it is robust to measurement noise. However, it requests the number of measured responses is not less than that of unknown structural parameters. To reduce the number of measurements requested by the SMBDD algorithm, another probabilistic structural damage detection approach is proposed. It is based on the integration of structural damage detection using temporal moments in each time segment of measured response time history with the sensitivity analysis of the damage vector to the uncertain parameters. In both approaches, probability distribution of damage vector is estimated from those of uncertain parameters based on stochastic finite element model updating and probabilistic propagation. By comparing the two probability distribution characteristics for the undamaged and damaged models, probability of damage existence and damage extent at structural element level can be detected. Some numerical examples are used to demonstrate the performances of the two proposed approaches, respectively.

  • In Korea, the next generation high-speed train, whose target is maximum speed of 400km/h and operating speed of 370km/h, has been developed since 2007. In this paper, the safety of the next generation high-speed train is compared UIC 518OR under the malfunctioning situation of the suspension system. The bogie of the next generation high-speed train has two suspensions. Two different vehicle models of the next generation high-speed train are created by using VAMPIRE and ADAMS/Rail, which are specialized to design railway vehicle. And Those models are showed same dynamic properties. First of all, the sensitivity analysis of ModelCenter is performed using model of VAMPIRE. One suspension element which has significant effects on the safety are selected by result of the sensitivity analysis. And then, the dynamic analysis when the suspension element is broken is performed using ADAMS/Rail. The 30km track between Pungsegyo and Biryong tunnel in Gyeongbu High-speed Line was used at the dynamic analysis. The estimated value is found by using the normal method of UIC 518OR. The estimated values on the normal/fault state and the limit values of UIC 518OR are compared. Finally, the safety of the next generation high-speed train is verified.
