  • This paper is concerned with the analysis of elasto-plastic stress waves in a mode I semi-infinite cracked solid subjected to Heaviside pulse load. This study adopts a time-discontinuous variational integrator based on Hamiltonian in order to reduce the numerical dispersive and dissipative errors. This also utilizes an integration scheme of the constitutive model with 2nd-order accuracy which is formulated on the strain space for a rate and temperature dependent material model. Finite element analyses of elasto-plastic stress waves are carried out in order to compare the accuracy between a conventional Galerkin method and the time- discontinuous variational integrator.

  • Surface pitting is a major failure mode for gears. The contact fatigue life analysis of transmission gear considering running-in process is presented in this paper. Surface roughness change of rolling test is used in a life analysis. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions; the subsurface stress field is obtained using rectangular patch solutions. Mesoscopic multiaxial fatigue criterion which can yield satisfactory results for non-proportional loading is then applied to predict fatigue damage. Suitable counting method and damage rule were used to calculate the fatigue life of random loading caused by rough surface. The life analysis considering running-in is in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • A numerical procedure for contact analysis and calculating subsurface stress was developed. The procedure takes the advantage of signal processing technique in frequency domain to achieve shorter computing time. Boussinesq's equation was adopted as a response function in contact analysis. The validity of this procedure was proved by comparing the numerical results with the exact solutions. The fastness of this procedure was also compared with other algorithm.

  • Analytical model to calculate the contact fatigue life of rough surface is presented in this paper. The effect of surface roughness can be calculated by this model. Computational method and the theoretical basis are also discussed. As a result of analysis the relationship between the life and the roughness as well as the most probable depth of the crack initiation is calculated.

  • For most bearings, it is a common requirement to have long durability. Especially wheel bearing fatigue life is the most important in automotive quality. The contact fatigue life analysis of automotive wheel bearing considering real raceway rough surface is presented in this paper. The life analysis considering real rough surface of wheel bearing raceway is in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • In this study, using high cycle fatigue (HCF) criteria, the simulation of rolling contact fatigue is conducted under elliptical contact. The HCF criteria fall into three categories: the critical plane approach, the stress invariant approach and the approach based on the mesoscopic scale. The accurate calculation of contact stresses and subsurface stresses is essential to the prediction of crack initiation life. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions and the subsurface stress field is obtained using rectangular patch solutions. The simulation results show that the critical load is decreasing rapidly and the site of crack initiation also moves rapidly to the surface from the subsurface when the friction coefficient exceeds a specific value for all of three fatigue criteria.

  • The objective of this paper is to predict pitting initiation by using a contact analysis and subsurface stress. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions. Subsurface stress field is obtained using rectangular patch solutions. It is used Mesoscopic multiaxial fatigue criterion to predict contact fatigue life. It is important to predict pitting initiation to enhance reliability of the mechanical elements. Pitting life prediction in the spur gears which are fundamental mechanical element is presented in this paper.

  • The concept of temperature distribution in inhomogeneous semi-infinite solids is examined by making use of direct integration method. The analysis is done on the solution of the in-plane steady state heat conduction problem under certain boundary conditions. The method of direct integration has been employed, which is then reduced to Volterra integral equation of second kind, produces the explicit form analytical solution. Using resolvent- kernel algorithm, the governing equation is solved to get present solution. The temperature distribution obtained and calculated numerically and the relation with distribution of heat flux generated by internal heat source is shown graphically.

  • The surface temperature at the interface of bodies in a sliding contact is one of the most important factors influencing the behavior of machine components. So the calculation of the surface temperature at a sliding contact interface has long been an interesting and important subject for tribologist. In this study to verify estimation of temperature rising, calculated temperatures were compared with measured temperatures. It is possible to calculate bulk and flash temperature.

  • We present a three-dimensional average flow model considering elastic deformation of pad asperities for chemical mechanical planarization. To consider the contact deformation of pad asperities in the calculation of the flow factor, three-dimensional contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions is conducted from computer generated three dimensional roughness data. The average Reynolds equation and the boundary condition of both force and momentum balance are used to investigate the effect of pad roughness and external pressure conditions on film thickness and wafer position angle.
