  • This paper presents the design and the application of a new self-powered hybrid electromagnetic damper that can harvest energy while mitigating the vibration of a structure. The damper is able to switch between an energy harvesting passive mode and a semi-active mode depending on the amount of energy harvested and stored in the battery. The energy harvested in the passive mode resulting from the suppression of vibration is employed to power up the monitoring and electronic components necessary for the semi-active control. This provides a hybrid control capability that is autonomous in terms of its power requirement. The proposed hybrid circuit design provides two possible options for the semi-active control: without energy harvesting and with energy harvesting. The device mechanism and the circuitry that can drive this self-powered electromagnetic damper are described in this paper. The parameters that determine the device feasible force-velocity region are identified and discussed. The effectiveness of this hybrid damper is evaluated through a numerical simulation study on vibration mitigation of a bridge stay cable under wind excitation. It is demonstrated that the proposed hybrid design outperforms the passive case without external power supply. It is also shown that a broader force range, facilitated by decoupled passive and semi-active modes, can improve the vibration performance of the cable.

  • Recently air pollution has become an important issue. So, as tile number of vehicles increases, the noise pollution has become one of the most serious social issues nowadays. It is a muffler, which is one of the vehicle components. that has the hugest impact on the noise from the vehicle. And it also has a direct influence on the engine performance. So lately the research is proceeding on tile semi-active muffler which can control the back pressure variably by setting up the exhaust variable valve in the baffle to improve its internal structure. The inner parts of muffler which consist of a baffle, pipes and etc. appear to have the complicated turbulence phenomena by the pulsational wave of an unsteady state in the engine and by the structural characteristics of the inner parts. To analyze these phenomena, it is required to have an analysis of its constant quantity and quality. Therefore this study is to analyze with PIV measurement which can analyze the time and space variables, not with the point measurement method like former multi-point anemometer. It is to suggest proper design variables which need to make internal structure of the muffler improve though comparison between the passive type muffler and the semi-active muffler by fabricating a muffler which can be visualized.

  • In this paper, the electromagnetic damper (EMD), which is composed of a permanent-magnet rotary DC motor, a ball screw and a nut, is considered to be analyzed as a semi-active damper. The main objective pursued in the paper is to study the two degrees of freedom (DOF) model of the semi-active electromagnetic suspension system (SAEMSS) performance and energy regeneration controlled by on-off and continuous damping control strategies. The nonlinear equations of the SAEMSS must therefore be extracted. The effects of the EMD characteristics on ride comfort, handling performance and road holding for the passive electromagnetic suspension system (PEMSS) are first analyzed and damping control strategies effects on the SAEMSS performance and energy regeneration are investigated next. The results obtained from the simulation show that the SAEMSS provides better performance and more energy regeneration than the PEMSS. Moreover, the results reveal that the on-off hybrid control strategy leads to better performance in comparison with the continuous skyhook control strategy, however, the energy regeneration of the continuous skyhook control strategy is more than that of the on-off hybrid control strategy (except for on-off skyhook control strategy).

  • An innovative multi-story Semi-Active Tuned Mass Damper (SATMD) building system is proposed to control seismic response of existing structures. The application of adding new stories as large tuned mass and semi-active (SA) resettable actuators as central features of the control scheme is derived. For the effective control of the structures, the optimal tuning parameters are considered for the large mass ratio, for which a previously proposed equation is used and the practical optimal stiffness is allocated to the actuator stiffness and rubber bearing stiffness. A two-degree-of freedom (2-DOF) model is adopted to verify the principal efficiency of the suggested structural control concept. The simulations for this study utilizes the three ground motions, from SAC project, having probability of exceedance of 50% in 50 years, 10% in 50 years, and 2% in 50 years for the Los Angeles region. 12-story moment resisting frames, which are modified as '12+2' and '12+4' story structures, are investigated to assess the viability and effectiveness of the system that aims to reduce the response of the buildings to earthquakes. The control ability of the SATMD scheme is compared to that of an uncontrolled and an ideal Passive Tuned Mass Damper (PTMD) building system. From the performance results of suggested '12+2' and '12+4' story retrofitting case studies, SATMD systems shows significant promise for application of structural control where extra stories might be added.

  • This paper proposes a new type of semi-active direct-drive valve(DDV) car suspension system using piezoelectric actuator associated with displacement amplifier. As a first step, controllable piezoelectric DDV damper is designed and governing equation of a quarter-vehicle suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the piezostack DDV damper is constructed. After deriving the equations of the motion, in order to control spool displacement and damping force the skyhook controller is designed and applied. The performance evaluation of the proposed semi-active suspension system is conducted with different displacement of spool. Then, the ride comfort analysis is undertaken in time domain with bump road profile.

  • Two novel semi-active control methods for a seismically excited nonlinear benchmark building equipped with magnetorheological dampers are presented and evaluated in this paper. While a primary controller is designed to estimate the optimal control force of a magnetorheological (MR) damper, the required voltage input for the damper to produce such desired control force is achieved using two different methods. The first technique uses an optimal compact Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy inverse model of MR damper to predict the required voltage to actuate the MR dampers (TSKFInv). The other voltage regulator introduced here works based on the maximum and minimum capacities of MR damper at each time-step (MaxMin). Both semi-active algorithms developed here, use acceleration feedback only. The results demonstrate that both TSKFInv and MaxMin algorithms are quite effective in seismic response reduction for wide range of motions from moderate to severe seismic events, compared with the passive systems and performs better than original and Modified clipped optimal controller systems, known as COC and MCOC.

  • Friction damping is one of the attractive vibration control technique for space structures due to its simplicity and large damping capacity. However, passive approaches for friction damping have a limitation because energy is no longer dissipated at sticking. In order to overcome this problem, semi-active control methods to adjust normal force at frictional interface have been studied in previous researches. In this paper, two semi-active friction control method is compared by simulating SDOF model of truss structure. The first approach is on-off control to maximize rate of energy dissipation, whereas the second concept is variable friction force control to minimize amplitude ratio for each half period. The maximum friction force, control variable in on-off control method, is obtained to minimize 1% settling time, and is different from optimal friction force in passive control. Simulation results show that performance of on-off control is better than that of variable friction force control in terms of settling time and controlled friction force.

  • To meet the challenge of testing increasingly complex automotive control systems, the real-time hardware-in-the-loop(HIL) simulation technology has been developed. In this paper, a strategy for evaluation of semiactive suspension systems using real-time HIL simulation is presented. A multibody vehicle model is adopted to simulate vehicle dynamic motions accurately. Accuracy of the vehicle simulation results is compared to that of the real vehicle field test and proven to be very accurate. The controller and stepping motor to adjust semi-active damper stage are equipped as external hardwares and connected to the real-time computer which has vehicle dynamic model. Open and closed loop test methods are used to evaluate a controlled suspension system and the system's operations are verified it is found that the proposed evaluation methods can be used well for the verification of semi-active suspension systems.

  • A new class of semi-active tuned mass dampers, named as "Ground Hook Tuned Mass Damper" (GHTMD) is introduced. This TMD uses a continuously variable semi-active damper (so called 'Ground-Hook') in order to achieve more reduction in the vibration level. The ground-hook dampers have been used in the auto-industry as a means of reducing the vibration of primary suspension systems in vehicles. This paper investigates the application of this damper as an element of a tuned damper for the vibration reduction of force-excited single degree of freedom (SDOF) models that can be representative of many structural systems. The optimum design parameters of GHTMDs are obtained based on the minimization of the steady-state displacement response of the main mass. The optimum design parameters which are evaluated in terms of non-dimensional values of the GHTMD are obtained for different mass ratios and main mass damping ratios. Using the frequency responses of the resulting systems, performance of the GHTMD is compared to that of equivalent passive TMD, and it is found that GHTMDs are more efficient. A design methodology to obtain the tuning parameters of GHTMD using the relationships developed in this paper is presented.
