  • There have been various attempts of Knowledge Management System in order to effectively support Knowledge Process and to manage a wide variety of unstructured knowledge. However, Knowledge Management System basically has some significant weakness for searching knowledge, extracting information and maintenance, and some difficulties to integrate such various knowledge resources. Several studies had been conducted to overcome these weaknesses and to improve the method of knowledge management. The purpose of this study is 1) to examine the effectiveness of Semantic Web Technology that has a great attention lately; whether it is useful to overcome the weaknesses, and 2) to review its strong points and some future uses. Further, differences of Semantic Web Technology compared to existing Knowledge Management System Architecture are reviewed. Finally, a new Semantic Web Enabled KMS Architecture is proposed. Also some prospects for future market direction are suggested.

  • The Semantic Web enables machines to achieve an effective retrieval, integration, and reuse of web resources. The keyword search method currently used has a limit to accurate search results because of a simple string matching method in web environment. This paper proposes an Ontology-Based Information Retrieval which can solve the problems and retrieve better search results through semantic relations. In this system, we implemented the Cultural Assets Ontology based on OWL with RDQL and Jena API. we also suggest a method to handle properties stored in a database.

  • Much research on semantic geographic information systems that incorporating the Semantic Web and geographic information has been actively studied. However, the existing geographic information systems have a system dependency problem that users can input and retrieve non-spatial information only in a specific system. It also causes difficulty in providing rich services. Therefore, this paper proposes an implementation model for population of Geo-ontology from non-structured Web resources. The proposed model can populate instances for Web ontology independently of systems, and thus it enables a richer Web service development. Finally, this paper shows the prototype that populates instances including a Geo-ontology building example for a University selected as an application domain.

  • As the technologies advance, mobile peer-to-peer (MP2P) networks or systems become one of the major ways to share resources and information. On such a system, the information retrieval (IR), including the development of scalable infrastructures for indexing, becomes more complicated due to a huge increase on the amount of information and rapid information change. To keep the systems on MP2P networks more reliable and consistent, the index structures need to be updated frequently. For a semantic IR system, the index structure is even more complicated than a classic IR system and generally has higher update cost. The most well-known indexing technique used in semantic IR systems is Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI), of which the index structure is generated by singular value decomposition (SVD). Although LSI performs well, updating the index structure is not easy and time consuming. In an MP2P environment, which is fully distributed and dynamic, the update becomes more challenging. In this work, we consider how to update the sematic index generated by LSI and keep the index consistent in the whole MP2P network. The proposed Concept Space Update (CSU) protocol, based on distributed 2-Phase locking strategy, can effectively achieve the objectives in terms of two measurements: coverage speed and update cost. Using the proposed effective synchronization mechanism with the efficient updates on the SVD, re-computing the whole index on the P2P overlay can be avoided and the consistency can be achieved. Simulated experiments are also performed to validate our analysis on the proposed CSU protocol. The experimental results indicate that CSU is effective on updating the concept space with LSI/SVD index structure in MP2P semantic IR systems.

  • Continual attempts to accumulate and apply information eventually gave birth to the concept of the "Semantic Web". Thus, the "Semantic Web" can be defined as a product of mankind's desire to standardize information. At the same time, the term provides "a method that standardizes mankind's concept of linguistical expression", and can be noted as an effort to combine such methods into a standard web environment that may materialize to form a catalogue. This study introduced RDF schema, ontology languages for the semantic web, and ontology-based systems. The purpose of the study was to construct a system based on the semantic web environment's ontology by utilizing the ontology schema derived from the facettype Art and Architecture Thesaurus(AAT). The aforementioned ontology schema is based on the Web Ontology Language(OWL), which is being widely considered the standard ontology language for the W3C-centered semantic web environment.

  • In this paper, we propose keyword search and ranking methods for OWL documents that describe metadata and ontology on the Semantic Web. The proposed keyword search method defines a unit of keyword search result as an information resource and expands a scope of query keyword to names of class and property or literal data. And we reflected derived information by inference in the keyword search by considering the elements of OWL documents such as hierarchical relationship of classes or properties and equal relationship of classes. In addition, our method can search a large number of information resources that are relevant to query keywords because of information resources indirectly associated with query keywords through semantic relationship. Our ranking method can improve user's search satisfaction because of involving a variety of factors in the ranking by considering the characteristics of OWL. The proposed methods can be used to retrieve digital contents, such as broadcast programs.

  • Need for machine-understandable web (Semantic web) is increasing in order for users to exactly understand Web information resources and currently there are two main approaches to solve the problem. One is the Topic map developed by the ISO/IEC JTC 1 and the other is the RDF (Resource Description Framework), one of W3C standards. Semantic web supports all of the metadata of the Web information resources, thus the necessity of interoperability between the Topic map and the RDF is required. To address this issue, several conversion methods have been proposed. However, these methods have some problems such as loss of meanings, complicated structure, unnecessary nodes, etc. In this paper, a new method is proposed to resolve some parts of those problems. The method proposed is called NOWL (NO structural Warp and semantics Loss). NOWL method gives several contributions such as maintenance of the original a Topic map instance structure and elimination of the unnecessary nodes compared with the previous researches.

  • Small-screen mobile terminals have difficulty accessing existing Web resources designed for large-screen devices. This paper presents an adaptive transformation method based on webpage semantic features to solve this problem. According to the text density and link density features of the webpages, the webpages are divided into two types: index and content. Our method uses an index-based webpage transformation algorithm and a content-based webpage transformation algorithm. Experiment results demonstrate that our adaptive transformation method is not dependent on specific software and webpage templates, and it is capable of enhancing Web content adaptation on small-screen terminals.

  • The information space of semantic web comprised of various resources, properties, and relationships is more complex than that of WWW comprised of just documents and hyperlinks. Therefore, ranking methods in the semantic web should be modified to reflect the complexity of the information space. In this paper we propose a method of ranking query results from RDF(Resource Description Framework) knowledge bases. The ranking criterion is the importance of a resource computed based on the link structure of the RDF graph. Our method is expected to solve a few problems in the prior research including the Tightly-Knit Community Effect. We illustrate our methods using examples and discuss directions for future research.

  • This parer presents a method of ranking translation word selection for Korean verbs based on lexical knowledge contained in a bilingual Korean-English dictionary and WordNet that are easily obtainable knowledge resources. We focus on deciding which translation of the target word is the most appropriate using the measure of semantic relatedness through the 45 extended relations between possible translations of target word and some indicative clue words that play a role of predicate-arguments in source language text. In order to reduce the weight of application of possibly unwanted senses, we rank the possible word senses for each translation word by measuring semantic similarity between the translation word and its near synonyms. We report an average accuracy of $51\%$ with ten Korean ambiguous verbs. The evaluation suggests that our approach outperforms the default baseline performance and previous works.
