Effects of Worker Status Change Type of the Household Heads on Household Income Since Korean Financial Crisis-excel (외환위기 이후 가구주의 종사상지위 변화유형이 가계소득증감여부에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the effects of household head’s worker status change type on household income and household head’s income using a total combined sample of 2,578 households from Korea surveyed in 1998 and 2002 KLIPS(Korean Labor and Income Panel Study). Binary logit regression results showed that household incomes were likely to decrease significantly when household head’s changed worker status from a regular employee, a temporary employee or a daily worker, or an employer or a self-employed to no job status, or from a regular employee to a temporary employee or a daily worker, an employer or a self-employed, or from an employer or a self-employed to a regular employee compared to a regular employee status maintenance. In contrast, household head’s incomes were likely to increase significantly when household head’s changed worker status from a temporary to a regular employee compared to a regular employee status maintenance. Women household heads were significantly associated with the likelihood of the decrease of household head’s income compared to men household heads. Household heads beyond their forties were significantly associated with the likelihood of the decrease of household head’s income compared to household heads in their thirties age-group counterparts. Household heads with education level beyond high school graduation were significantly associated with the likelihood of the increase of household head’s income compared to household heads with the education level of high school graduation. This study shows that a more comprehesive labor policy is needed for achieving sustainable household income inflow.

Inter-and Intragenerational Occupational Mobility in Korea (도시취업자의 세대간 직업이동과 세대내 이동)

  • Using panel data (KLIPS) we examine the relation between respondents' occupation and their fathers' occupation. We divide the urban employed into four subgroups according to their occupation: employer, self-employed, white collar worker and blue collar worker. We find that the effects of fathers' occupation on respondents' occupation are mediated by the level of respondents' education. The effects of respondents' initial occupation on their current occupation are also significant. In terms of the extent of mobility, we can rank the occupational groups as follows: employer, upper layer of self-employed, white collar worker, lower layer of self-employed and blue collar. In order to encourage occupational mobility, we should level the opportunity of education among different occupational groups.

  • Now a day, Information and its related system has been more important in our competitive environment. In this situation, there is also an important thing that we must take into consideration, that's the employer's resistance. Until now we have little material concerning the issue, user's resistance. Owing to that, it's a little hard to study the user's resistance against the IS. Dealing with the resistance effectively helps companies save a great deal of cost and build the information system successfully. This paper takes the Markus's theories about user's resistance. According to the theories, there are three keys theories affecting resistance. To sum this, people-oriented theory, system-oriented theory and Interaction theory. To complement the theories, this paper includes another theories related with resistance and takes total seven factors causing user's resistance. Among these seven factors, four factors have a meaningful effect on the user's resistance, that is, Self-efficacy, System Complexity, Threat of the one's status and politics and System Staff's service quality. Managers and system-related company should keep it in mind very carefully, and I hope they make the best use of the result of this study.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the influencing factors on the economic and educational supports selection of small self-employed business. A sample of 321 was selected from self-employed workers living in Daegu. For data analysis, logistic regression was used. The major findings were as follows: 1 The determinants of the economic supports selection in self-employed business were father's working experiences in self-employed business, taking employees or not in business, having housing ownership or not, and as well as the amount of starting capital. 2. The determinants of the educational supports selection in self-employed business were self-employer's working experience as self-employed before or not, and empowerment with self-employed work.

Different Effects of Workers' Trust on Work Stress, Perceived Stress, Stress Reaction, and Job Satisfaction between Korean and Japanese Workers

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of trust on work stress. Trust can be classified into three dimensions; social trust, institutional trust, and trust in others. The relationship between work stress and trust is regarded as having three components. First, trust has an influence on work stressors as an antecedent variable; secondly, trust modifies the effect of the various stressors, and finally, trust is one of the stressors. Methods: Data for this study was collected by interviews and self-administered structured questionnaires from 376 Korean and 77 Japanese workers in small businesses. Subjects were selected by two stage stratified random sampling from the working population of manufacturing industries. Results: Three different positions of trust are significantly related with the stress causation web. Social trust, institutional trust and trust in others significantly influence different work stressors in both Korean and Japanese workers. Three different kinds of trust influence work stressors among Korean workers, but institutional trust has no impact on work stressors among Japanese workers. As a moderating variable for perceived stress, distrust in an employer is statistically significant in both groups. However, stress symptom prevalence among Korean workers is modified by caution, trust in career development, and distrust in co-workers, but that of Japanese workers is modified only by distrust in employer. Job satisfaction of Korean workers is affected by general trust, utility of relation, institutional trust and trust in employer, but among Japanese workers, caution, reputation and trust in employer have influence on job satisfaction. Conclusion: The effect of trust on work stress, perceived stress, stress reaction and job satisfaction are different among Korean workers and Japanese workers. Three dimensions of trust have three different positions as antecedent, moderating and mediating factors in stress causation.

Factors Associated with Performance of Occupational Health Services in Small-sized Workplaces (소규모 사업장의 보건관리업무수행 관련 요인)

  • Purpose: This study is to identify factors associated with performance of occupational health services in small-sized workplaces in Korea. Methods: The data were collected from a random sample of 1,158 occupational health managers working for small-sized workplaces across the nation in which occupational health services were supported by Korean Industrial Health Association. A structured questionnaire was self-administrated by occupational health managers about characteristics of workplaces, occupational health managers, and performance level of occupational health services. Results: Stepwise multiple regression analyses revealed that factors associated with performance of occupational health services in small-sized workplaces included supervisor being designated, occupational health manager having received safety and health training, and employer's concern with activities of health management. Conclusion: Government should make efforts to raise the level of employer's concern to occupational health activities. And it is needed to promote health managing staff as a core personnel to self-management for occupational health system.

A Study on the Individual Wage Effect of Training (교육훈련의 경제적 성과 - 임금근로자를 중심으로 -)

  • This article tried to find out the individual wage effect of training. This Article used 1998, 1999 KLIPS(Korea Labor and Income Panel Study) panel data. The size of the individual wage effect of training was twice of tenure's, and had significance. Training had a good effect on the job satisfaction and carrier development. To overcome self selection bias, this article regressed the first difference of wage equations, but we didn't get the significant results. Dividing sample into quitters and non-quitters in order to investigate the relation between training cost and benefit, we regressed separately the each first difference of wage equation. On quitters, the individual effect of training appeared significantly, but on non-quitters, it didn't. This results mean that employer does not raise wage rate according to upgraded skill originated in incumbent's training. And the results also mean that the upgraded skill of employee who quit pre-employer is recognized by new employer, and his wage rate rises in his new job.

The Effect of Self-esteem on Elderly Depression : Moderated Mediation Effects of Family Relations Satisfaction and Working Types (자아존중감이 노인 우울에 미치는 영향 : 가족관계만족도와 근로유형의 조절된 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • Object: This study investigated the effect of self-esteem on depression through family relations satisfaction and tested whether working types would moderate such associations. Method: The subjects were 2,145 elderly who are healthy enough to work and were selected for the ninth Korean Welfare Panel Study. The resulting data were analysed by using the statistical program SPSS 2.1 with reference to steps for testing mediation by Baron and Kenny, moderated mediation by Heyes. Results: Self-esteem has both direct and indirect significant effects, revealing that family relations satisfaction fully mediates the effects of coping strategies of family conflict on depression. From the working types, self-employed/employer and unpaid family worker, moderate the indirect effect of self-esteem on depression through family relations satisfaction. Conclusions: In practical intervention of elderly depression reduction, efforts to increase family relations satisfaction is effective when it is difficult to us address satisfaction. Moreover, we have to provide intervention for elderly with work in context of relationship of individual and familial factor.

Long Working Hours in Korea: Based on the 2014 Korean Working Conditions Survey

  • Background: Long working hours adversely affect worker safety and health. In 2004, Korea passed legislation that limited the work week to 40 hours, in an effort to improve quality-of-life and increase business competitiveness. This regulation was implemented in stages, first for large businesses and then for small businesses, from 2004 to 2011. We previously reported that average weekly working hours decreased from 2006 to 2010, based on the Korean Working Conditions Survey. Methods: In the present study, we examine whether average weekly working hours continued to decrease in 2014 based on the 2014 Korean Working Conditions Survey. Results: The results show that average weekly working hours among all groups of workers decreased in 2014 relative to previous years; however, self-employed individuals and employers (who are not covered by the new legislation) in the specific service sectors worked > 60 h/wk in 2014. Conclusion: The Korean government should prohibit employees from working excessive hours and should also attempt to achieve social and public consensus regarding work time reduction to improve the safety, health, and quality-of-life of all citizens, including those who are employers and self-employed.

Related Factors to the Service Level of Aged Care Facilities in Korea (노인요양시설 서비스 제공 수준의 관련 요인 분석)

  • The objective of this study is to examine relevant factors of the service level of aged care facilities. The sample used in this study consisted of 357 aged care facilities in Korea. Data were collected with self-administered questionnaire and 140 returned questionnaire were analyzed by SPSS Version 12.0. The major findings of the study are as follows: First, there was no significant mean difference in the service level by the facility characteristics, except the length of operation. Second, it was found that both administrative characteristics and employer characteristics were positively associated with the level of nursing and supportive services. Third, the study results revealed that the following three variables of employee education and training, community networks, and employer's philosophy and management principles had significant positive effects on the level of nursing services. Meanwhile, the following two variables of employee education and training, and community networks had significant positive effects on the level of supportive services. In conclusion, in order to improve their service level, the managers of aged care facilities in Korea should make efforts to provide more employee education and training, establish networks with the community stakeholders, for example, local clinics and hospitals. It is also recommended for the government to make a policy inducing more qualified private investors to enter the aged care market, as well as to strengthen the qualification of the managers of the public aged care facilities.
