A case study of problem-based learning (PBL) in classes (PBL을 활용한 <드레이핑> 교과 수업사례 및 학습효과 연구)

  • Universities have recently introduced problem-based learning (PBL) to various subjects to enhance problem-solving skills (including self-directed learning and small-group learning) required in industry. The PBL module was applied to the personal production process in a draping class. A study was based on a questionnaire after conducting two PBL modules with a group of students. Each PBL module included 'design analysis', 'presentation of flat sketch and draping plan', 'discussion of the plan', 'evaluation of the draping result and correcting the problem', and 'final evaluation of the completed project'. Results showed that satisfaction with the PBL method and its activities was higher than satisfaction with existing teaching methods. In particular, among the various components, the 'design analysis' and 'the presentation step of flat sketch and draping plan' stages were more helpful to students compared to small-group discussion. Moreover, the effects of PBL were observed through student reflection essays, in which students suggested that PBL was very effective in enhancing problem-solving through self-directed and small-group learning. Despite the overall satisfaction with PBL, students expressed some minor difficulties associated with awkwardness with a novel learning method, lack of diverse perspectives among each group, and poor communication skills. Therefore, the study shows that PBL is highly likely to be useful to students when they are solving pattern drafting problems and making samples through self-directed learning and small-group learning.

  • This research examines how PBL(Problem-based Learning; PBL) system affects to 'Self-directed learning ability', by developing and applying it to the participants of "Science Cyber Conference" - the web based on-line debating learning program - among those students of the Affiliated Institute of Science gifted education of K University, for 16weeks. With this, also the cognizance of learners for the PBL class process are looked into together. After conducting the program applied with the web-based PBL strategy, the participants 'Self-directed learning ability' showed the remarkable change statistically (p<.05). Especially it showed the meaningful changes in six sections (p<.05), among those subdivided seven sections of 'Self-directed learning ability', with the one exception, 'Self-confidence as a Learner'. They also showed the positive response to the class which adopted the web-based PBL strategy.

Influence of Project-Based Learning in LIS on Self-Directed Learning and Problem Solving Ability (문헌정보학의 프로젝트기반 학습이 자기주도적 학습과 문제해결능력에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigates the influence of project-based learning method on the self-directed learning and problem-solving abilities of students taking the 'Media Center Management' course in Library Information Science (LIS). During this study, two tests measuring students' self-directed learning and problem-solving abilities were conducted, containing 48 items divided into 8 categories and 30 items divided into 5 steps of problem-solving processes, respectively. By utilizing the correspondence sample T-test during this study, statistically significant results were found in all categories of self-directed learning, excluding the 'self-understanding' category. In addition, significant differences were found in the 5 steps problem-solving processes as well. Subsequently, an in-depth interview was conducted, inquiring into the students' perspectives on the difficulty of attending classes, the content of lectures, the appropriateness of assignments, the validity of the evaluation method, the relationship with their team members, and the benefits acquired from completing the assignments. Finally, suggestions for future research were presented.

The Longitudinal Relationship between Self-directed Learning Ability and Career Maturity using Autoregressive Cross-lagged Modeling by Middle and High School Students in Seoul (자기주도학습능력과 진로성숙도 간 자기회귀교차지연 효과검증: 서울지역 중·고등학생을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the causal relationship between self-directed learning ability and career maturity by Middle and High School Students in Seoul. This study used Seoul Education Longitudinal Study(SELS) data. Using autoregressive cross-lagged modeling, the results was followed. first, self-directed learning ability value was had a statistically significant positive effect in accordance with the time course from middle school 1st grade to high school 3rd grade. Second, career maturity also had a statistically significant positive effect in accordance with the time course from middle school 1st grade to high school 3rd grade. Third, previous self-directed learning ability had significant positive effect on the later career maturity, but the previous career maturity had no significant effect on later self-directed learning ability.

  • Purpose: This exploratory research is to give managerial implication to sales personal management. This study focused on antecedents of job satisfaction and organizational commitment specially in HRD programs and system by participation and effect toward job. Research design, data and methodology: This research focuses on relationship analysis among job satisfaction, organizational commitment and HRD programs of logistics and sales personnel in Korea. HRD program consider two parts one is participation and other is effect toward job. And three HRD program is included education & training, system and self-directed Learning. This study used 7th HCCP data from KRIVET and 748 employee data is analyzed. SPSS18 is used and frequency, reliability, correlation and regression analysis are conducted. Results: Result shows that job satisfaction is positively affected by education & training participation, HRD system participation and HRD system effect toward job. Organizational commitment is positively affected by education & training participation, HRD system participation, education & training effect toward job and HRD system effect toward job. However self-directed Learning participation negatively affect organizational commitment. Lastly job satisfaction partially mediates between HRD and organizational commitment. Conclusions: Based on the results, this paper provide implication to academic, practical HRD and suggest feature research.

The Effectiveness of Problem Based Learning(PBL) across Learning Styles in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 학습유형에 따른 문제중심 학습의 효과)

  • This study was to identify the difference of achievement motivation, self-efficacy, self-directed learning across the learning styles after application of the Problem based learning(PBL) in Nursing students. Descriptive survey was performed from march to june, 2009 at a university in Jeju. The participants were 268 in freshman nursing student and PBL was used during one semester. The data from 242 participants were analysed using IBM SPSS 20.0 The results revealed that most nursing students had converger in learning styles. Achievement motivation and self-efficacy were the greatest scores in accommodator and self-directed learning was the greatest scores in converger. However, Achievement motivation, self-efficacy, and self-directed learning were lowest in diverger. Significant positive correlation was found among achievement motivation, self-efficacy, and self-directed learning each other. There were significant difference in achievement motivation, self-efficacy and self-directed learning across learning styles. More research is needed to determine the effects of PBL in nursing education including many variables.

The Effect of Self-Actualization On the Clothing Selection Behaviors among adult Women (성인여성의 자아실현도가 의복선택행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of self-actulization and demographic variables upon the selection of clothes among adult women. The Results of this research can be sumerized as follows; 1. Marital status has direct effect on the self-actualizing values, Marital status and houshold type have direct effect on the inner directed and self-regard traits. Marital status and monthly income have direct effect on a capacity for intimate contact. 2. Self-actualizing values and inner directed traits are directly related with individuality of clothing. Frequency of contact with massmedia, household type and employment have direct effect on the individuality of clothing. 3. Self-regard, self-actualizing values, school career and houshold type have direct effect on the conformity of clothing. 4. Self-actualizing values, capacity for intimate contact and frequency of contact with massmedia have direct effect on the fashionability of clothing.

Relationship between Self-Directed Learning Ability, Critical Thinking Disposition and Nursing Process Confidence of Nursing Students (간호대학생의 자기주도적 학습능력, 비판적 사고성향 및 간호과정 자신감과의 관계)

  • This descriptive research study identified the factors affecting the nursing process confidence of nursing students. The study's data was collected from June 13th 2017 to June 30th, 2017. Informed consent was received from 129 students who were in their second year of nursing college. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS WIN 18.0 program. The score for self-directed learning ability was 3.45, the score for a critical thinking disposition was 3.55, and the score for nursing process confidence was 3.68. There was significant positive correlation between nursing process confidence and self-directed learning ability (r=.572, p<.001) and critical thinking disposition (r=.488, p<.001). The factor affecting the confidence in the nursing process was self-directed learning ability(32.2%). Educational methods based on building the self-directed learning ability are needed to enhance the nursing process. There are limitations in discussing the results of this study due to the lack of prior research. Further study is needed to confirm the results of this research and the relationships it revealed.

Effect of Other Behaviors on Self-Directed Learning Ability, Flow and Academic Achievement of Department of Radiology(science) Students in Online Classes (온라인 수업에서 방사선(학)과 학생들의 딴짓이 자기주도적 학습역량, 몰입, 학업성취도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to confirm the degree of other behaviors among university students in the department of radiology(science) who experienced online classes in the COVID-19 situation and to investigate the effect of self-directed learning ability, flow and academic achievement on other behaviors. The research method was descriptive research. Data were 200 students collected from June 1 to 30 in 2022 using structured questionnaires as students in the Department of Radiology(science). Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Cronbach's pearson's correlation, multiple regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 21.0. The result of the study showed that the other behaviors were in the order of 'having s different thought, and 'sending text messages'. other behaviors was 1.75, self-directed learning ability was 3.60, flow was 3.23 and academic achievement was 4.29. There was a significant negative correlation between other behaviors and self-directed learning ability, flow, academic achievement. Factors influencing other behaviors were academic achievement, age, flow, self-directed learning ability in that order. As a result of the above research. it is expected that specific measures and various teaching methods to be flowed in the class are need as the way to lower the other behaviors of university students in the Department of Radiology(science) is to increase academic achievement.

Effects of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in Fashion Design Classes

  • In recent years, in order to enhance the problem-solving skills required by the industrial field, universities have introduced the Problem-Based Learning(PBL) method to solve the problems caused by the lack of creativity, problem solving ability and self-directed learning. This study applied PBL class methods such as 'learning based on individual specific problems', 'self-directed learning', and 'small-group learning of small members' to practical design of fashion design. To do this, I conducted a questionnaire after conducting research based on the PBL module for one semester in a practical class of fashion design major at P University. As a result of the survey, the satisfaction and achievement of the class conducted by PBL learning method was improved than the existing teaching method. As such, if PBL class is used as a way of solving problems through close communication between professors and learners, it is expected to be established as a learner-centered education method that can improve creativity and professionalism.
