  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to identify factors related to the health behavior in elementary school children at a late school age and to provide basic data to develop more concrete and practical applications for health promotion and disease prevention. Methods: The participants were 2,775 4th, 5th and 6th graders sampled from 10 elementary schools in Busan Metropolitan City and data were collected from 15th May to 30th June, 2010. The collected data were analyzed by mean, percentile, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson s correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression using the SPSS/WIN 17.0 program. Results: The average percentiles for self-rated health, body satisfaction, stress, parent attachment, self-esteem, and health behavior were 82.8, 69.5, 40.9 79.3, 75.9 and 75.9, respectively. There was significant relationship among the levels of self-rated health, body satisfaction, stress, parent attachment, self-esteem, and health behavior. Body satisfaction was the most powerful factor to the health behavior of elementary school children at a late school age, and was followed by parent attachment, self-rated health, self-esteem, and grade in order. These variables explained 26.6% of the total variance in health behavior. Conclusion: Health promotion behavior programs including body satisfaction and self-esteem elevation programs should be applied to children at home and in school and community. To achieve this, institutional and economic support should be continued.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the Traditional Play-centered Obesity Control Cooperative Learning Program based on the cooperative learning theory on obesity rate, physical fitness, self-esteem, and body image specifically in obese elementary school children. Methods: The research design for this study was based on a non- equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The study was conducted from September, 5 to November 30, 2012. The subjects included 74 obese children ($Exp.=25^{(a)}$, $Com.=24^{(b)}$, $Cont.=25^{(c)}$) with an obesity rate above 20% at an elementary school in G City. Data analysis was performed using SPSS/WIN 18.0, using Chi-square test, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffe test. Results: The obesity rate (F=4.033, p<.022) in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the group (Com, Cont), in which the Traditional Play-Centered Obesity Control Cooperative Learning Program was not implemented. Self-esteem (F=4.310, p<.017) also caused significant differences. However, physical fitness (Muscular endurance F=1.545, p=.220; Flexibility F=.671, p=.514; Agility F=1.594, p=.210; Speed F=5.386, p<.007, scheffe (a,b

Method: The research design was a comparative descriptive study using a self-report questionnaire. A total of 102 women aged 40~59 years were recruited using a convenient sampling method. A total of 52 women out of 102 were within a year after thyroidectomy due to benign disease. The rest of the subjects were healthy women without any previous diseases in thyroid. The instruments included Body Image Concern Inventory, Climacteric symptoms, and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, $x^2$-test, one-way ANOVA, and correlation analysis. Results: There were no significantly differences in age, education, menstruation states between women with and without thyroidectomy. The demographic characteristics of two groups were homogeneous. There were significantly statistical differences in body image (t= 8.456, p=.000), and depression (t=3.142, p=.002) between the groups. There was, however, no significantly differences of climacteric symptoms. In addition, in women with thyroidectomy, no significant associations were found among body image, depression, and climacteric symptoms. To achieve the objectives of this study, the research questions are as follows. First, the images of black fashion-manias are classified. Second, each type of black fashion enthusiasts' motivations for wearing black fashion are verified. Last, black fashion-mania style are analyzed according to image types. In order to answer the research questions, a literature review and in-depth interviews (total 30 respondents (male 15, female 15) were executed. As a result, black fashion-manias use black fashion for self protection, their self-images such as charismatic professional image, modern sophisticated image, body-conscious sexy image, avant garde image which is an anti-fashion norm and unique image. The strong reason why black fashion-manias insist on black fashion is to 'look cooler'. The expressions could be articulated from sophisticated styling techniques that appear to be undecorated rather than an overt decorated styling. It is helpful information to plan black fashion products and to establish a design direction that requires an understanding of why black fashion is pursued, while promoting an understanding of groups of black fashion-mania.

  • This study aims to explore the diverse characteristics of obese groups of Korean males in their 20's to 40's. A total of 201 males who each had a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 23 or over were recruited through a convenient sampling. Samples were categorized into groups of overweight, slightly obese, and severely obese, and submitted for data analysis. Results are summarized as follows. First, in terms of demographic characteristics, slightly and severely obese males were older than overweight males. There were also group differences in marital status and household income. Second, slightly and severely obese groups demonstrated a higher perception of obesity and a lower perception of health than did the overweight group. Third, there were no group differences in body satisfaction, socio-cultural attitudes toward appearance, and self-esteem. Based on these results, we concluded that overweight, slightly obese, and severely obese groups were distinguishable from each other in terms of their demographic characteristics, whereas the slightly obese group and the severely obese group were not different in terms of perception of obesity, perception of health, weight control behaviors, body satisfaction, body image, socio-cultural attitudes toward appearance, and self-esteem. These findings may reflect that people may not become increasingly sensitive to socio-psychological stimulations as they gain more weight if they have exceeded a certain level of obesity. This observation provides meaningful implications for the differences among obesity groups given the lack of prior research focusing on this issue.
