$Cu(In,Ga)Se_2$ (CIGS) thin films have been used as a light absorbing layer in high-efficiency solar cells. In order to improve the quality of the CIGS thin film, often selenization step is applied. Especially when the thin film was formed by non-vacuum powder process, selenization can help to induce grain growth of powder and densification of the thin film. However, selenization is not trivial. It requires either the use of toxic gas, $H_2Se$, or expensive equipment which raises the overall manufacturing cost. Herein, we would like to deliver a new, simple method for selenization. In this method, instead of using a costly two-zone furnace, use of a regular tube furnace is required and selenium is supplied by a mixture of selenium and ceramic powder such as alumina. By adjusting the ratio of selenium vs. alumina powder, selenium vaporization can be carefully controlled. Under the optimized condition, steady supply of selenium vapor was possible which was evidently shown by large grain growth of CIGS within a thin powder layer.
In this research, hydride generation in HPLC-ICPMS for the selenium speciation was investigated. Chemical and photochemical vapor generation techniques were compared for the effective generation of selenium vapour. $HBr/KBrO_3$ was used for the chemical reduction and a UV lamp was used for the photochemical reduction. It was found out that the photochemical reduction was more effective than the chemical reduction in all of selenium species studied. The optimum conditions for the generation of vapour are 0.4% KI, 2.5% $NaBH_4$, and 1.0 M HCl. The enhancement factor using a photochemical hydride generation was from 6.3 to 16.7 times for inorganic and organic selenium species.
Pulsed electric field (PEF) of 1Hz, 1.5 kV, and 1ms increased the activities of catalase and inulinase over the whole range of applied Se concentrations compared with the non-treated cultures. A significant effect of selenium concentration (in the range of 5-14 ${\mu}g/ml$) on both intra- and extracellular enzyme activities was noted. At a Se concentration of 10 ${\mu}g/ml$, the activities of intra- and extracellular inulinases and extracellular catalase in the PEF-treated cultures reached the maximum of 71 U/g d.m., 46 U/g d.m., and approx. 8 U/ml, respectively. The maximum activity of intracellular catalase of approx. 6 U/ml (with and without PEF) was recorded at 5 ${\mu}g$ Se/ml. Further increasing of selenium concentration caused a decrease in the activity of the enzymes.
To improve the semen production, the selenium(Se) and vitamin E(Vit. E) were administrated into Hanwoo young sire for intensification an antioxidant system and the taurine were supplemented into semen extender for improving the semen characteristics. The 16 heads ranging from twenty to thirty two months of age were randomly assigned to control group, Se-admistrated group(Se-group), Vit. E-administrated group(Vit. E-Group) and Se and Vit. E administrated group(Se and Vit. E-group). Se and Vit. E dministrated 3 times every 30 days by intramuscular injection. The administration of Se, Vit. E, and Se and Vit. E didn't affect on semen volume, sperm concentration, and total sperm number among all groups(p>0.05). Adiministration of Se improved sperm motility and viability. Motility of Se-group and control were 26.01% and 19.20%, respectively(p<0.05). Viability of Se-group(47.07%) was higher than control group(35.73%), Vit. E group(36.55%)(p<0.05). The administration of Se and Vit. E didn't affect sperm capacitation and acrosome reaction. The 100mM taurine supplement into semen extender increased the motility of frozen/thawed semen in the Vit. E-group(p<0.05) and had a beneficial effects on decreasing abnormality of frozen/thawed semen in all groups(p<0.05). These results indicate that Se administration improve sperm motility and viability, and the taurine supplement into semen extender decrease abnormality in Hanwoo young sire.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of different selenium (Se) products (inorganic, organic A, organic B) added at two supplemental dietary Se levels (0.1 and 0.3 mg/kg) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and Se retention in growing-finishing pigs. A $3{\times}2$ factorial arrangement of treatments was used in a RCB design, with a non-Se-fortified basal diet serving as the negative control. A total of 56 crossbred pigs (28 male and 28 female pigs) initially weighing an average $28.45{\pm}0.53kg$ BW were allotted to each treatment with four pigs per pen on the basis of sex and weight. Two pigs per pen were selected and bled from the anterior vena cava at 3- weekly intervals to analyze Se concentration. In the growing phase (0-6 weeks), increased ADFI was observed when pigs were fed organic Se compared to those fed the control diet or inorganic Se treatment (p<0.05). Pigs fed inorganic Se had a great ADFI than pigs fed organic Se (p<0.05) in the late finishing phase (7-12 weeks), although there were no differences in whole period ADFI between organic or inorganic Se products. During 12 weeks of the whole experimental period, serum Se concentration increased linearly when dietary Se level increased regardless of Se products (p<0.05). Both dietary Se source (p<0.05) and Se level (p<0.01) influenced the Se concentration of various pig tissues at end of this experiment and Se content was the highest in the kidney. For the determination of nutrient digestibility, a metabolic trial was conducted in 3 replicates in randomized complete block (RCB) design. A total of 21 barrows ($50.21{\pm}0.62kg$ of average BW) were used in the metabolic study. Selenium supplementation had no effect on nutrient digestibility except for crude protein. Crude protein digestibility increased with dietary supplementation of organic Se (A) compared with other forms of Se products or control diet (p<0.05). Consequently, this experiment indicated that dietary Se products and levels had no effect on growth performance of pigs. Se concentration in tissues and serum was increased in proportion to dietary Se level, especially when organic Se was provided. Although pigs were fed organic forms of Se, bioavailability of organic forms varied among products, consequently bioactivity of organic products to the animals should be evaluated before practical application in animal feed.

Photoconductor for direct detection flat-panel imager present a great materials challenge, since their requirements include high X -ray absorption, ionization and charge collection, low leakage current and large area deposition. Selenium is practical material. But it needs high thickness and high voltage in selenium for high ionization rate. We report comparative studies of detector sensitivity. One is an a-Se with $70{\mu}m$ thickness on glass. The other has hybrid layer of depositting ZnS phosphor with $100{\mu}m$ on a-Se. The leakage current of hybrid is similar to it of a-Se, but photocurrent is lager than a-Se. Both of them have high spatial resolution, but hybrid has higher sensitivity than a-Se at comparable bias voltage.

Due to their better photosensitivity in X-ray, the amorphous selenium based photoreceptor is widely used on the X-ray conversion materials. It was possible to control the charge carrier transport of amorphous selenium by suitably alloying a-Se with other elements(e,g. As, Cl). In this paper, We investigated dopants(As, Cl) composition rate to improve dark resistivity and transport properties of charge carrier in amorphous selenium using by direct X-ray conversion material. Alloying a-Se with As inhibits the recrystallization of a-Se but introduces undesirable deep hole traps. then doping with Cl(in the ppm range) compensates for the deep hole traps. We investigated their composition rate in various doping conditions and then obtained optimum dopant composition rate. The result was Se-As 0.3%-c] 30 ppm and X-ray Sensitivity was 0.57 pC/$pixel{\cdot}mR$ at $137{\mu}m{\times}137{\mu}m$ Pixel area.
The trace mineral, selenium (Se), is an essential nutrient of fundamental importance to human health. It is also very toxic and can cause Se poisoning (selenosis) in human and animals when its intake exceeds a suitable amount. Se functions within mammalian systems primarily in the form of solenoprotein. About 35 selenoproteins have been identified, though many have not yet been fully elucidated. Selenoproteins contain Se as selenocyseine (Sec) and perform variety of structural and enzymic roles; the enzymic roles are best-known as the antioxidants for hydrogen peroxides and lipid peroxides, and the catalysts for production of activity thyroid hormone. Glutathione peroxidases ($\textrm{GP}_X$) among the selenoproteins prevent the generation of free radicals and decrease the risk of oxidative damage to tissues, as does thioredoxin reductase (TR). TR also provides reducing power for several biochemical processes. Selenoproteins P and W are involved with oxidant defense in plasma and muscle, respectively, A selenoprotein is also required for sperm motility and may reduce the risk of miscarriage. Some epidemiological studies have revealed an inverse correlation between Se status and cardiovascular disease, and there is considerable evidence 1mm population com-parison data and animal studies that Se is anticarcinogenic. It is also suggested that Se should be needed for the proper functioning of the immune system, and appear to be a key nutrient in counteracting the development of virulence and inhibiting HIV progression to AIDS. As research continues, the role of selenium in the etiology of chronic diseases like appropriate medical nutrition therapy can be delivered and its effectiveness assessed. Se status in individuals is affected by diet and the availability of the Se. The Se content of plants is affected by the content and availability of the element in the soil in which they are grown, and so greatly varies from country to country, while the Se composition of meat reflects the feeding patterns of livestock. This paper provides an overview on Se as an essential trace mineral for human.

This study was carried out to determine effects of the feeding length of spent mushroom composts from selenium-enriched mushroom (Se-SMC) on muscular selenium deposition in finishing Hanwoo steers. A total of 30 steers were allotted to an experiment with a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement. Treatments were 2 groups of with and without Se-SMC at three different feeding lengths (2, 4, and 6 months) by body weight (BW). And then dry matter intake, body weight gain, Se concentration and/or content in blood and/or muscle were investigated. Dry matter intake was not affected by feeding length and Se-SMC supplementation. As the feeding length was prolonged, initial and final BW was significantly lowered (p<0.01) with no Se-SMC effect. However, total BW gain was significantly increased (p<0.0001) with increasing feeding length with no effect of Se-SMC. Se-SMC supplementation significantly increased Se concentration in whole blood, but there was no effect on feeding length. Se contents in muscles, especially hind-leg, were significantly increased (p<0.05) as the feeding length was increased. However, there was no difference for Se content between four and six months feeding groups of Se-SMC and also hepatic Se content was not affected by feeding length. On the contrast, hepatic Se content for Se-SMC group within each feeding length was significantly increased (p<0.001) compared with no Se-SMC supplementation. In conclusion, our results suggested that optimum feeding length of Se-SMC as a strategy for the production of Se-fortified beef might be approximately 4 months.
This study was conducted to find out the analysis condition of selenium(Se) in oil refinery wastewater with a high concentration of Se using the atomic absorption spectrometry with hydride generation system (HG-AAS). From various experiments that reduced Se(VI) to Se(IV), the optimum pretreatment condition was determined to be a sample volume of 10 mL, HCl 10 mL, with a 30 min heating time in a water bath. In oil refinery wastewater, as the concentration of organics and constitution became higher, the recovery rates of Se decreased. Therefore, three acid digestion methods ($HNO_3/HClO_4$ digestion, $KMnO_4$ digestion, and microwave acid digestion) were tested on the recovery rates of Se in reference to the digestion of organics, petroleum and oxidation from organic Se(org.), Se(IV) to Se(VI). The experiment results showed that the average recovery rate of Se was the highest in microwave acid digestion, although all of the digestions were more than 90%. In consequence, the pretreatment procedure of microwave digestion followed by HCl addition was the most suitable for selenium analysis in oil refinery wastewater by using HG-AAS.
