  • Since the columns with flexure-shear failure have lower ductility than those with flexural failure, shear capacity curve models shall be applied as well as flexural capacity curve in order to determine ultimate displacement for seismic design or performance evaluation. In this paper, a modified shear capacity curve model is proposed and compared with the other models such as the CALTRANS model, Aschheim et al.'s model, and Priestley et al.'s model. Four shear capacity curve models are applied to the 4 full scale circular bridge column test results and the accuracy of each model is discussed. It may not be fully adequate to drive a final decision from the application to the limited number of test results, however the proposed model provides the better prediction of failure mode and ultimate displacement than the other models for the selected column test results.

  • Two methods of the nonlinear static pushover analysis have been presented for the performance-based seismic design and evaluation of MDOF continuous bridges. Guidelines for buildings presented in FEMA-273 applying the Displacement Coefficient Method (DCM) and in ATC applying the Capacity Spectrum Method(CSM) have been modified for MDOF bridges. Two methods are compared with the time- history analysis. The lateral load distribution pattern for seismic loads has been examined in the static pushover analysis. The force-based fiber frame finite element has been implemented in the modeling of reinforced concrete piers.

  • This study is a secondary study that is a cyclic seismic test of High depth hybrid composite beam and column connection after the primary bending strength test of a high depth Hybrid composite beam. Total of 3 seismic test specimens were prepared to cyclic test. The bracket and beam web spliced by high strength bolt and the bracket and beam upper flange was spliced by welding. Test results showed that the seismic strength was higher than the plastic moment($M_p$) in the positive negative moment section, the requirement of composite intermediate moment frame wes satisfied. Therefore, the requirement of intermediate moment frame can be secured by applying the details of connection of this study results.

  • A Performance Based Design procedure for retrofitting the RC frame with friction dampers is described. The Capacity Diagram Method procedure is used to estimate the inelastic response of the example model. The example models were retrofitted using SBC dampers and the retrofitted example models were computation ally modeled. The results show that the performance of the retrofitted frame satisfies the target objective.

  • In general, industrial rotating machinery have been designed to have critical speed that is above operating speed. But nowadays, they should be operated more than the first critical speed as usual with the trend of high speed and high performance of rotating machinery. Therefore, it is important to predict the accuracy rotordynamic characteristics of the high speed rotating system in advance. In this paper, the results of rotordynamic analysis about FWP(Feed Water Pump) drive turbine rotor are showed. Because the FWP drive turbine analyzed is high speed machinery operated more than the operation speed of conventional FWP drive turbine, Seismic response analysis as well as unbalance response analysis is done in order to improve the reliability of the new turbine rotor-bearing system.

  • In the design of bridge piers in seismic area, the ductility requirement is the most important factor. In order to enhance the seismic performance of RC columns, it is necessary to make the ductility of columns larger by covering RC columns with steel tubes or confining RC columns by arranging transverse reinforcements such as hoop ties closely. Using core steel composite columns is useful as one of the reinforcing RC columns. In this paper, quasi-static tests on concrete encased composite columns with single core steel or multiple steel elements were performed to investigate the seismic performance of the composite columns. Eight concrete-encased composite specimens were fabricated. The cross-sections of these specimens are composed of concrete-encased H-shaped structural steel columns and a concrete-encased circular tube with partial in-filled concrete. Test parameters were the amount of the transverse reinforcements, type and number of encased steel member. Through the tests, it was evaluated the ductility of SRC composite specimens. It has become clear from the test results that encased steel elements makes the deformation capacity of the columns to be larger. The displacement ductility and lateral strength of specimen with concrete-encased circular tube were indicated the biggest value.

  • Due to structural characteristics, construction costs and duration of a modular system would be saved by minimizing the schedule on the job site. As such, it is crucial to develop a connection that can guarantee stiffness while allowing for simple assembling. Particularly, the mid- to high-rise construction of the modular system necessitates the securing of the structural stability and seismic performance of multi-unit frames and connections, and thus, the stiffness of unit-assembled structures needs to be re-evaluated and designed. However, evaluating a frame consisting of slender members and reinforcing materials is a complicated process. Therefore, the present study aims to examine the structural characteristics of a modular unit connection based a method for reinforcing connection brackets and hinges while minimizing the loss of the cross section. Toward this end, the study modeled the beam-to-column connection of a modular system with the proposed connection, and produced a specimen which was used to perform a cycling loading test. The study compared the initial stiffness, the attributes of the hysteretic behavior, and the maximum flexural moment, and observed whether the model acquired the seismic performance, compared to the flexural strength of the steel moment frame connection that is required by the Korean Building Code. The test results showed that the proposed connection produced a similar initial stiffness value to that of the theoretical equation, and its maximum strength exceeded the theoretical strength. Furthermore, the model with a larger ceiling bracket showed higher seismic performance, which was further increased by the reinforcement of the plate.

  • Current seismic design codes for building structures are based on the methods which can provide enough capacity to satisfy objected performance level and exactly evaluate the seismic performance of buildings. This paper is to suggest the method of inference of inelastic earthquake response obtained from MDOF system by equivalent SDOF system, and to prove the validity. The analysis results form simple model shows a good application possibility.

  • This paper deals with the numerical model of a bracing-friction damper system and its deployment using the optimal slip load distribution for the seismic retrofitting of a damaged building. The Slotted Bolted Connection (SBC) type friction damper system was tested to investigate its energy dissipation characteristic. Test results coincided with the numerical ones using the conventional model of a bracing-friction damper system. The placement of this device was numerically explored to apply it to the assumed damaged-building and to evaluate its efficiency. It was found by distributing the slip load that minimizes the given performance indicies based on structural response. Numerical results for the damaged building retrofitted with this slip load distribution showed that the seismic design of the bracing-friction damper system under consideration is effective for the structural response reduction.
