  • Downhole seismic method is widely used for obtaining shear wave velocity profile of a site because it is simple and economical. Determining accurate travel time of shear wave is very important to obtain reliable result in downhole seismic method. In this paper, comparison study of various travel time determination methods was performed. Numerical study and model chamber test were performed for effective comparison study. Signal traces were acquired by performing downhole test at each numerical simulation and soil box test. Travel time data for each signal traces were determined by using six different methods and Vs profiles were evaluated. Comparing travel time data and Vs profiles with the reference value, the first arrival picking method proved to be ambiguous and unreliable. Other methods also did not always provide accurate results and the magnitude of error was dependent on the signal to noise ratio. Cross-correlation method proved to be the most adequate method for the field application and it was verified additionally with field data.

  • This paper clarifies the problems which structural engineers would have when the high-rise reinforced concrete building structures with vertical and plan irregularities are to be designed against earthquakes. The most important problems appear to be as follows: (1) ambiguity in defining the principal direction of the structure and the dynamic base shear, (2) the methodology how to account for the accidental eccentricity when the modal analysis should be conducted as required for the torsionally irregular structures, and (3) the choice of 100/30 and SRSS methods to take into account the effect of the critical direction of earthquake.

  • Recently, cultural heritages in South Korea gain many interests of restoration and preservation from the government since many of that have been severely damaged during earthquakes. Many previous studies in both terms of experimental and analytical approaches have been done to examine structural behavior and decide appropriate methods of preservation. Being motivated by such researches, this research aims to investigate a religious stone pagoda dated back to the Goryeo Dynasty in Korea. The structure consists of a granite stone foundation and baked bricks, which resembles the shape of traditional pagodas. In order to examine the structural behavior of the pagoda, an analytical model is implemented using ANSYS, a comprehensive engineering simulation platform. For the time history analysis of the pagoda, several earthquake excitations are chosen and input to simulation modeling. Seismic response of the tower such as time domain, natural frequency, modal shapes and peak acceleration measured at each layer are presented and discussed. In addition, the amplification ratio of the tower is calculated from the accelerations of each layer to determine tower stability in accordance with Korean seismic design guide. The determination and evaluation of status and response of the brick tower by simulation analysis play an important role in the preservation of history as well as valuable architectural heritages in South Korea.

  • The application of 3D printing technology in seismic physical modeling was investigated and the related domestic research was conducted. First, seven types of additive manufacturing methods were evaluated. In this report, to confirm the application of 3D printing technology, related studies in domestic and international journals of geophysics were searched and a comprehensive analysis was conducted according to year and the additive manufacturing type. The analysis showed that studies on 3D printing technology have been dominantly conducted since the 2010s, which corresponds to the time when 3D printers were commercialized. Moreover, 87% of the studies used the material extrusion additive manufacturing method, and the research was conducted in specific universities. This research can be used as basic data for application of 3D printing technology in geophysics.

  • Response spectrum analysis method is widely used for seismic analysis of building structure. Analysis of structural vibration for equipment, machine and moving loads are executed by time history analysis. This method is very complex, difficult and tedious. In this study, maximum response of structure for this case are simply and fast. calculated by mode shape and response spectrum for excitation. At first, Response spectrum and time history analysis for some earthquake is carried and investigate the error of maximum displacement response for R. S. A. Secondly, The process for response spectrum analysis in excitation are calculated, and maximum model response are combined by CQC (Complete Quadratic Combination) methods. Finally, Combining maximum displacement response is compared with one of time history analysis.

  • To analyze dynamic and long-term behavior of high speed rail system, and seismic measurements been installed at the various locations in the high speed rail system. Among these, 76 measurements were installed Chunan and Deajeon, and 80 measurements between Kwangmyung and Chunan. From these 156 measurements, real time data are continuously corrected and be sent to the main monitoring system to be used further analysis. These two systems were installed by different institution, and so there are not only basic differences in the system itself, but system running methods and data collecting/transferring methodology. There has been systematic difficulties due to these differences. This study shows the whole steps of high speed rail data monitoring systems include measurement equipment itself and data collecting/transferring system. study will proposed a more effective methods for collecting. This study also discuss the real time analysis method which can be used for future high speed rail monitoring system.

  • In this paper, dynamic analysis of concrete pipe submerged in the fluid and conveying fluid is studied subjected to earthquake load. The structure is modeled by classical shell theory and the force induced by internal fluid is obtained by Navier-Stokes equation. Applying energy method and Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are derived. Based on Navier and Newmark methods, the dynamic deflection of the structure is calculated. The effects of different parameters such as mode number, thickness to radius ratios, length to radius ratios, internal and external fluid are discussed on the seismic response of the structure. The results show that considering internal and external fluid, the dynamic deflection increases.

  • This paper investigates the effectiveness of widely used identification methods to identify the response of seismically isolated structures supported on bearings with bilinear behavior. The paper shows that while both time domain and frequency domain methods predict with high accuracy the modal characteristics of structures isolated by linear isolation system, their performance degrades appreciably when the isolation system exhibits bilinear behavior even when its strength assumes moderate values (say 5% of the weight). The paper also shows that the natural period of isolated structure that results from bilinear isolation systems can be satisfactorily predicted with wavelet analysis.

  • Seismic design of braced frames that simultaneously considers economic issues and structural performance represents a rather complicated engineering problem, and therefore, a systematic and well-established methodology is needed. This study proposes a multi-objective seismic design method for an inverted V-braced frame with suspended zipper struts that uses the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II(NSGA-II). The structural weight and the maximum inter-story drift ratio as the objective functions are simultaneously minimized to optimize the cost and seismic performance of the structure. To investigate which of strength- and performance-based design criteria for braced frames is the critical design condition, the constraint conditions on the two design methods are simultaneously considered (i.e. the constraint conditions based on the strength and plastic deformation of members). The linear static analysis method and the nonlinear static analysis method are adopted to check the strength- and plastic deformation-based design constraints, respectively. The proposed optimal method are applied to three- and six-story steel frame examples, and the solutions improved for the considered objective functions were found.
