This paper proposes an approach integrating multiple segmentation methods in a systematic way, which can improve overall accuracy without deteriorating accuracy of highly confident segments of boundaries generated by constituent methods. A segmentation method produces boundary segments, which are then evaluated with an evaluation function considering pros/cons of the current and next methods to apply. Boundary segments with low confidence are replaced by a next method while the other segments are kept. These steps are repeated until all segmentation methods are applied. The proposed approach is implemented for the segmentation of muscles in the Visible Human color images. A Balloon method, a minimum cost path finding method, and a Seeded Region Growing method are integrated. The final segmentation results showed improvements in both overall evaluation and segment-based evaluation.
In order to analyze cell images, accurate segmentation of each cell is indispensable. However, the reality is that accurate cell image segmentation is not easy due to various noises, dense cells, and inconsistent shape of cells. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an algorithm that combines marker-based watershed segmentation and ellipse fitting method for glioblastoma cell segmentation. In the proposed algorithm, in order to solve the over-segmentation problem of the existing watershed method, the marker-based watershed technique is primarily performed through "seeding using local minima". In addition, as a second process, the concave point search using ellipse fitting for final segmentation based on the connection line between the concave points has been performed. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, we compared three algorithms with other algorithms along with the calculation of segmentation accuracy, and we applied the algorithm to other cell image data to check the generalization and propose a solution.

Remote sensing image segmentation plays an important role in realizing intelligent city construction. The current mainstream segmentation networks effectively improve the segmentation effect of remote sensing images by deeply mining the rich texture and semantic features of images. But there are still some problems such as rough results of small target region segmentation and poor edge contour segmentation. To overcome these three challenges, we propose an improved semantic segmentation model, referred to as MRU-Net, which adopts the U-Net architecture as its backbone. Firstly, the convolutional layer is replaced by BasicBlock structure in U-Net network to extract features, then the activation function is replaced to reduce the computational load of model in the network. Secondly, a hybrid multi-scale recognition module is added in the encoder to improve the accuracy of image segmentation of small targets and edge parts. Finally, test on Massachusetts Buildings Dataset and WHU Dataset the experimental results show that compared with the original network the ACC, mIoU and F1 value are improved, and the imposed network shows good robustness and portability in different datasets.

Iris segmentation is an initial step for identifying the biometrics of animals when establishing a traceability system for livestock. In this study, we propose a deep learning framework for pixel-wise segmentation of bovine iris with a minimized use of annotation labels utilizing the BovineAAEyes80 public dataset. The proposed image segmentation framework encompasses data collection, data preparation, data augmentation selection, training of 15 deep neural network (DNN) models with varying encoder backbones and segmentation decoder DNNs, and evaluation of the models using multiple metrics and graphical segmentation results. This framework aims to provide comprehensive and in-depth information on each model's training and testing outcomes to optimize bovine iris segmentation performance. In the experiment, U-Net with a VGG16 backbone was identified as the optimal combination of encoder and decoder models for the dataset, achieving an accuracy and dice coefficient score of 99.50% and 98.35%, respectively. Notably, the selected model accurately segmented even corrupted images without proper annotation data. This study contributes to the advancement of iris segmentation and the establishment of a reliable DNN training framework.

As technology gets developed, medical equipments are also modernized and leading-edge systems, such as PACS become popular. Many scientists noticed importance of medical image processing technology. Technique of region segmentation is the first step of digital medical image processing. Segmentation technique helps doctors to find out abnormal symptoms early, such as tumors, edema, and necrotic tissue, and helps to diagnoses correctly. Segmentation of white matter, gray matter and CSF of a brain image is very crucial part. However, the segmentation is not easy due to ambiguous boundaries and inhomogeneous physical characteristics. The rate of incorrect segmentation is high because of these difficulties. Fuzzy-based segmentation algorithms are robust to even ambiguous boundaries. In this paper a modified Fuzzy-based segmentation algorithm is proposed to handle the noise of MR scanners. A proposed algorithm requires minimal computations of mean and variance of neighbor pixels to adjust a new neighbor list. With the addition of minimal compuation, the modified FCM(mFCM) lowers the rate of incorrect clustering below 30% approximately compared the traditional FCM.
Long sentence analysis has been a critical problem in machine translation because of high complexity. The methods of intra-sentence segmentation have been proposed to reduce parsing complexity. This paper presents the intra-sentence segmentation method based on maximum entropy probability model to increase the coverage and accuracy of the segmentation. We construct the rules for choosing candidate segmentation positions by a teaming method using the lexical context of the words tagged as segmentation position. We also generate the model that gives probability value to each candidate segmentation positions. The lexical contexts are extracted from the corpus tagged with segmentation positions and are incorporated into the probability model. We construct training data using the sentences from Wall Street Journal and experiment the intra-sentence segmentation on the sentences from four different domains. The experiments show about $88\%$ accuracy and about $98\%$ coverage of the segmentation. Also, the proposed method results in parsing efficiency improvement by 4.8 times in speed and 3.6 times in space.
In this paper, we proposed an encoder-decoder model utilizing residual learning to improve the accuracy of the U-Net-based semantic segmentation method. U-Net is a deep learning-based semantic segmentation method and is mainly used in applications such as autonomous vehicles and medical image analysis. The conventional U-Net occurs loss in feature compression process due to the shallow structure of the encoder. The loss of features causes a lack of context information necessary for classifying objects and has a problem of reducing segmentation accuracy. To improve this, The proposed method efficiently extracted context information through an encoder using residual learning, which is effective in preventing feature loss and gradient vanishing problems in the conventional U-Net. Furthermore, we reduced down-sampling operations in the encoder to reduce the loss of spatial information included in the feature maps. The proposed method showed an improved segmentation result of about 12% compared to the conventional U-Net in the Cityscapes dataset experiment.
Although huge progress has been made in current image segmentation work, there are still no efficient segmentation strategies for tree image which is taken from natural environment and contains complex background. To improve those problems, we propose a method for tree image segmentation combining adaptive mean shifting with image abstraction. Our approach perform better than others because it focuses mainly on the background of image and characteristics of the tree itself. First, we abstract the original tree image using bilateral filtering and image pyramid from multiple perspectives, which can reduce the influence of the background and tree canopy gaps on clustering. Spatial location and gray scale features are obtained by step detection and the insertion rule method, respectively. Bandwidths calculated by spatial location and gray scale features are then used to determine the size of the Gaussian kernel function and in the mean shift clustering. Furthermore, the flood fill method is employed to fill the results of clustering and highlight the region of interest. To prove the effectiveness of tree image abstractions on image clustering, we compared different abstraction levels and achieved the optimal clustering results. For our algorithm, the average segmentation accuracy (SA), over-segmentation rate (OR), and under-segmentation rate (UR) of the crown are 91.21%, 3.54%, and 9.85%, respectively. The average values of the trunk are 92.78%, 8.16%, and 7.93%, respectively. Comparing the results of our method experimentally with other popular tree image segmentation methods, our segmentation method get rid of human interaction and shows higher SA. Meanwhile, this work shows a promising application prospect on visual reconstruction and factors measurement of tree.
Objective: To determine whether volumetric CT texture analysis (CTTA) using fully automatic tumor segmentation can help predict recurrence-free survival (RFS) in patients with intrahepatic mass-forming cholangiocarcinomas (IMCCs) after surgical resection. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study analyzed the preoperative CT scans of 89 patients with IMCCs (64 male; 25 female; mean age, 62.1 years; range, 38-78 years) who underwent surgical resection between January 2005 and December 2016. Volumetric CTTA of IMCCs was performed in late arterial phase images using both fully automatic and semi-automatic liver tumor segmentation techniques. The time spent on segmentation and texture analysis was compared, and the first-order and second-order texture parameters and shape features were extracted. The reliability of CTTA parameters between the techniques was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Intra- and interobserver reproducibility of volumetric CTTAs were also obtained using ICCs. Cox proportional hazard regression were used to predict RFS using CTTA parameters and clinicopathological parameters. Results: The time spent on fully automatic tumor segmentation and CTTA was significantly shorter than that for semi-automatic segmentation: mean ± standard deviation of 1 minutes 37 seconds ± 50 seconds vs. 10 minutes 48 seconds ± 13 minutes 44 seconds (p < 0.001). ICCs of the texture features between the two techniques ranged from 0.215 to 0.980. ICCs for the intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility using fully automatic segmentation were 0.601-0.997 and 0.177-0.984, respectively. Multivariable analysis identified lower first-order mean (hazard ratio [HR], 0.982; p = 0.010), larger pathologic tumor size (HR, 1.171; p < 0.001), and positive lymph node involvement (HR, 2.193; p = 0.014) as significant parameters for shorter RFS using fully automatic segmentation. Conclusion: Volumetric CTTA parameters obtained using fully automatic segmentation could be utilized as prognostic markers in patients with IMCC, with comparable reproducibility in significantly less time compared with semi-automatic segmentation.

Image processing and computer vision technologies are becoming increasingly important in a variety of application fields that require techniques and tools for sophisticated image analysis. In particular, image segmentation is a technology that plays an important role in image analysis. In this study, in order to identify recent research trends on image segmentation techniques, we used the Web of Science(WoS) database to analyze the R&D topography based on the network structure of the author's keyword co-occurrence matrix. As a result, from 2015 to 2023, as a result of the analysis of the R&D map of research articles on image segmentation, R&D in this field is largely focused on four areas of research and development: (1) researches on collecting and preprocessing image data to build higher-performance image segmentation models, (2) the researches on image segmentation using statistics-based models or machine learning algorithms, (3) the researches on image segmentation for medical image analysis, and (4) deep learning-based image segmentation-related R&D. The scientometrics-based analysis performed in this study can not only map the trajectory of R&D related to image segmentation, but can also serve as a marker for future exploration in this dynamic field.
