This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of seeding rates on the forage quality and productivity of direct-seeded whole crop rice at the experimental field of the Grassland and Forages Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA from 2007 to 2008. Whole crop rice variety, "Nokyang", developed by the National Institute of Crop Science, was directly seeded with four different seeding rates (30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha). There were no significant differences (p<0.05) found in emergence date, heading date, greenish and disease resistance based on the seeding rates. Plant height increased at higher seeding rates but the tiller number per plant decreased (p<0.05). The dry matter (DM) content showed no significant difference based on seeding rates (p<0.05) while the yield of fresh and dry matter increased with incremented seeding rates (p<0.05). Acid detergent fiber (ADF) content increased with higher seeding rates, but the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content did not show a similar tendency. The total digestible nutrient (TDN) content was lowest with 120 kg/ha seeding rate. The grain ratio decreased at higher seeding rates. In economic analysis, the plot seeded at a rate of 60 kg/ha showed the highest income increment. Although high seeding rates increased the DM yield, a seeding rate of 60 kg/ha is recommended as the proper seeding rate for direct-seeded whole crop rice.

An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of seeding rates and nitrogen fertilization levels on the agronomic characteristics, nutritive value and forage yield of spring oat(Avena sativa L.). This experiment was undertaken over a period of 2 months from September to November, 1987. The results obtained are summarized as follows : Increased seeding rates of 120, 160 and 200kg/ha decreased emergence rates by 93.4, 71.4 and 70.6 %, respectively(P<0.05). Tillering was decreased by higher seeding rates(P<0.05) and that of 120kg/ha of seeding rate with 200kg/ha of nitrogen fertilization level was highest by 3.3. Among three seeding rates, tillering of 200 kg/ha of nitrogen fertilization level was lowest by 2.1. Leaf width was influenced by seeding rates. When seeding rate was increased, narrow leaf width (P

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of seeding dates and rates on the productivity and nutritive value of hairy vetch(Vicia villosa Roth) at experimental field of Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon from 1999 to 2000. The experimental design was consisted of split-plot design with three replications. The main plot was seeding dates(25 Aug., 15 Sep. and 5 Oct.) and the subplot was seeding rates(20, 30 and 40 kg/ha). Late seeding dates increased the plant height and delayed the flowering stage as 1 or 2 days. The dry matter(DM) content was decreased with low seeding rates, and the trend was same in the all plots. Average crude protein(CP) content was $24.1\%$ and increased with delayed seeding date and lower seeding rate. The content of acid detergent fiber(ADF) and neutral detergent fiber(NDF) was increased with higher seeding rate, but seeding date did not affect. In vitro dry matter digestibility(IVDMD) of hairy vetch tended to decrease with high seeding rate, and total digestible nutrient(TND) did not show significant difference among seeding rates. Average relative feed value(RFV) of hairy vetch showed 140 which means very high quality. Dry matter and CP yield was decreased with delayed seeding date. The results of this experiments indicated that seeding in middle-August with 40 kg/ha would be recommended to produce the highest yield and quality f3r the cultivation of hairy vetch in middle part of Korea

This study was conducted to find out the hydroseeding timing of several herbaceous plants for the slope revegetation works. Four native plants and five introduced grasses were used for this experiment and were seeded on the cut slopes by hands in April, May, June, September and October. To identify the best seeding timing, germination percentage, ground covering rate, number of tillers and plant heights were investigated. There were wide differences in germination and ground covering rates of native plants are lower than those of cool-season foreign grasses and they show different germination rates according to seeding timing. Among them, Arundinella hirta var. ciliata shows the most apparent germinatin pattern according to seeding timing. 2. Seeding timing : Native plants tend to germinate well in May and June and cool-season foreign grasses in May and September. But Native plants show extremely low germination rates in autumn, so it is necessary to adjust the seeding rates when seeding in autumn. When seeding in May, it will be possible to use native plants-seed-mixture without using introduced foreign grasses. In sum, the best seeding timing of cool-season foreign grasses are May and September, and warm-season foreign grass is May and June. The best seeding timing of native plants seem to be in May and June.

A field experiment was carried out to determine the effects of seeding methods and rates on the growth characteristics, forage yield and nutritive value of sorghum X sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, cv. Pioneer 988) grown under application of animal manure in 1995. The application amount of animal manure were 40MT in cattle manure, 30MTha in swine and poultry manure. The methods and rates of seeding treated in this study were drill of 30kg, and broadcast of 30, 60 and 100kgha of seeding rates. The plant height was 180cm, 191cm and 204cm in cattle, swine and poultry manure, respectively. Plant height in the plot of drill was higher by about 15cm than those of broadcast plots. The dry matter(DM) yield was 7.73, 8.87 and 9.80MTha in cattle, swine and poultry manure, respectively. A significant higher forage yield was produced in the plot of drill, compared with broadcast(Pc0.05). DM yields in broadcast of 60kg and lOOkg of seeding rates were higher than that of 30kg of seeding rate of broadcast. However, no significant difference in forage yield was found between 60kg and IOOkg of seeding rates. The average DM yield was 11.16, 6.94, 8.26 and 8.83MTIha in drill(30kg), broadcast 30, 60 and 100kgIMT of seeding rates, respectively. The nutritive value of sorghum x sudangrass hybrid was very similar among treatments. The crude protein yields were 1,010kg in cattle manure, 1,180kg in swine manure, and 1,592kg in poultry manure. The protein yield was significantly high in the plot of drill. In conclusion, seeding by drill was recommended for forage production and protein yield of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid, and proper seeding rates were 30kg in drill and 60kg in broadcast. The present study investigated the effects of different seeding rates on growth characteristics and seed productivity of the "Kowinearly" cultivar of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) in paddy fields. Sowing Kowinearly in paddy fields under growing rice at the rates of 20, 30, 40, and 50 kg/ha resulted in seed yields of 1.57, 1.92, 2.06, and 2.09 ton/ha, respectively. Seed yield of Kowinearly was the highest at a seeding rate of 50 kg/ha (p<0.05), at which the cultivar was able to survive in winter and the weed ratio was low. Under these conditions, most growth characteristics such as winter survival (85%), weed ratio (10%), stems per square meter (1,006) were superior than those sown at other seeding rates (p<0.05). In addition, it has been reported that the economic efficiency of the 50 kg/ha seeding rate was higher than that of the other seeding rates.
Performance of direct seeded paddy rice in ridged dry soil was evaluated at different seeding methods (broadcasting, drilling, and seeding in group) and seeding rates (4, 6, and 8kg /10a). The number of maximum tillers at broadcasting and drilling of seeds was higher than that at seeding in group. At broadcasing and drilling the number of maximum tillers at seeding rate of 6kg /10a was greater than that at 4 or 8kg /10a, but at seeding in group the number of maximum tillers increased with seeding rates. Among the seeding methods there were no differences in the number of seedlings per unit area, culm and panicle lengths, and productive tiller ratio, but heading date at seeding in group was delayed by a day compared with broadcasting or drilling. At heading stage leaf area index(LAI) and dry matter production at broadcasting of seeds were higher compared with drilling and seeding in group, but light transmission ratio at drilling and seeding in group was higher than that at broadcasting of seeds. Although the number of seedlings increased with seeding rates, LAI and dry matter production at heading stage, culm and panicle lengths, and productive tiller ratio were not different among the seeding rates. There were no differences in the number of panicles and spikelets per unit area, 1,000 grain weight, yield, and harvest index among the seeding methods. The number of spikelets per panicle at seeding in group was higher, but percent ripened grains was lower compared with broadcasting and drilling. There were no significant differences in the number of panicles and spikelets per panicle and unit area, percent ripened grains, and harvest index among the seeding rates, but yield at seeding rate of 6kg /10a was higher than at 4 or 8kg /10a. There were no significant differences in tiller length, bending moment, and fresh weight of tiller among the seeding methods. Breaking strength was lower in the order of seeding in group, drilling, and broadcasting of seeds. However, lodging index was similar among the seeding rates and lodging was not occurred in the field. There was a significant interaction in the cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin contents of culm base between seeding methods and seeding rates.
Experiments were conducted to effect of seeding rates and growth regulator (KIM-112) application on lodging resistance and yield in direct seeding on flooded paddy surface. The number of seedlings per $m^2$ were ranged from 61 to 143, and seedling ratios were from 71.7 to 76.1%. The culm length was increased with the higher seeding rates. The culm length was significantly shortened by KIM-112 application, and the shortened effect of internodes were various with application times. The leaf angles with the culm and top leaves were errected and position of light reception by KIM-112 application, also the weight of culm base was increased. The bending moment at breaking of culm and culm diameter were decreased according to the higher seeding rates. The number of panicles per $m^2$ were increased according to the higher seeding rates. The ripened grain rate and 1, 000 grains weight became higher than the untreated control.
Glasshouse investigations were carried out to investigate the development and yield of Atylosia scarabeoides on soils of the northern guinea savanah zone of Nigeria. Seeds were sown at four rates 50, 75, 100 and 125 kg/ha. Single superphosphate (SSP) fertilizer was applied at sowing at four rates 0, 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha. Seeding (plant) population at one month and at harvest was significantly (p < 0.01) influenced by seeding rate but not fertilizer level. Fresh herbage yield was strongly (p < 0.01) dependent on fertilizer level, with the highest (not significant) dry matter yield at 90 kg SSP/ha. Seeding rate had no significant effects on herbage yield. The crude protein content of herbage rose with increase in fertilizer level although there were no significant differences between the various seeding and phosphorus rates. No significant interactions were observed between seeding rate and phosphorus lever. The yields were generally high, indicating good prospects for pasture development with A. scarabeoides in the zone, although field trials would be of benefit.
In order to develop an appropriate cultural practice for a newly bred 2-rowed, waxy, naked barley cultivar 'Duwonchapssalbori' in the southern region, 2 varieties, 3 seeding dates, 4 seeding rates were designed with 2 replications. The heading and maturity dates of 'Duwonchapssalbori' were' earlier than 'Saessalbori by 2-5 and 4 days, respectively. Culm length of 'Duwonchapssalbori' was 60 to 66cm with lodging resistance. Grain yields of both varieties were 4.28-4.33 ton/ha in the plot of Oct. 20 seeding, 4.11-4.18 ton in the plot of Oct. 28 seeding, and 3.7-13.89 ton/ha in the Nov. 5 seeding. Grain yield with different seeding rates highly significantly fitted with secondary polynomial equations in the plots of Oct. 20 and Oct. 28 seedings ($R^2$=0.84-0.85), showing the greatest yield with seeding rate of 140kg per ha. However, the grain yield with various seeding rates in the plot of Nov. 5 seeding showed simple linear regression ($R^2$=0.71), showing the seeding rate over 160kg in the case of later seeding to be optimal. Number of spikes per $m^2$ significantly contributed to grain yield, and fitted to simple linear regression ($R^2$=0.881-0.891), suggesting that plenty of early stands should be established at early seedling stage for high grain yield. Young spikes of 'Duwonchapssalbori' in the plot of Oct. 20 seeding elongated with linear increments since Feb. 10 (6.7mm), and showed rapid increment since March 7 (15.1mm). However, elongation of young spikes of 'Saessalbori' began from March 15 with slow increments. From these studies, the optimum seeding date and seeding rate in 'Duwonchapssalbori' were Oct. 20-28 and 140kg per ha for high grain yield in the southern regions.
