Characterization of Soybean Hybrid Seeds Resulted from Natural Hybridization between LM Soybean and Wild Soybean (LM콩과 야생콩인 돌콩의 교잡후대종 종자의 특성 평가)

  • With increasing LM soybean import, the concern about unintentional gene flow from LM soybean to wild soybean and consequential weedy risk has been growing. Therefore, we conducted this study to characterize seed traits including germination of hybrids resulted from gene flow from LM soybean to wild soybean in comparison with their parents, LM soybean and wild soybean. Pollen-donor LM soybean seeds were much greater and heavier (about 15.0 g of 100 seed weight) than F2 hybrid (5.7 g), while pollen-recipient wild soybean and F1 hybrid seeds were smallest and lightest (about 2.5 g). F2 hybrid was brown, intermediate between yellow LM soybean seed and black wild soybean seed. These findings indicate that F1 hybrid seeds show similar characteristics with wild soybean, while F2 hybrid seeds show intermediate color and size between two parents. F2 hybrid seed showed intermediate traits between two parents in germination and dormancy rates, which were 35% and 65%, respectively. LM soybean showed no dormancy, while wild soybean showed greater than 90% dormancy. This finding indicates that F2 hybrid show intermediate characteristics in seed germination with high dormancy trait, suggesting a potential weediness of hybrids resulted from gene flow from LM soybean to wild soybean.

Synchronization of Flowering for Hybrid Com Seed Production by Clipping Young Plants Clear Polyethylene Mulching and Planting Date (옥수수 교잡종채종에 있어 유식물절단 비닐피복 및 파종기에 의한 자식계통 개화기조절)

  • The need to synchronize flowering in two lines of different maturities is frequently encountered in hybrid com (Zea mays L.) seed production. To establish the methods for synchrony of flowering in parent lines of different maturities be effects of clipping at 4 and 6-leaf stages of growth and two levels, clear polyethylene mulching and five different planting dates on flowering date growth and seed yield of two dent com inbred lines of different maturities were evaluated Clipping just above the shoot-apex delayed pollen sheeding 6 to 9days and silking 5 to 13 days but reduced stand and seed yield 30 to 70% and 67 to 81%. respectively. Clipping 5cm above the shoot apex delayed flowering 1 to 4 days without stand reduction but reduced yield 3 to 29%. Laterclipping was slightly more effective for delaying flowering than earlier clipping but reduced stand more severely when clipped just above the shoot apex. Under clear polyethylene film mulching, flowering of two lines was 13 to 15 days earlier and seed yield of B68 (late line) was significantly increased. As planting was delayed from April 18 to June 13, the number of days from planting to flowering of two lines decreased due to increase in air temperature. However, growing degree days (GDD) from planting to flowering of each lines was similar regardless planting dates indicating that GDD can be satisfactoryly used for choosing the planting dates of parent lines of different maturities. Seed yields of two lines were decreased with delaying planting dates.

  • Conventional approaches for car number plate detection have dealt with those input images having similar sizes and simple background acquired under well organized environment. Thus their performance get reduced when input images include number plates with different sizes and when they are acquired under different lighting conditions. To solve these problem, this paper proposes a new scheme that uses the geometrical features of number plates and their topological information with reference to other features of the car. In the first step, those edges constructing a rectangle are detected and several pixels neighboring those edges are selected as the seed pixels for region growing. For region growing, color and intensity are used as the features, and the result regions are merged to construct the candidate for a number plate if their features are within a certain boundary. Once the candidates for the number plates are generated then their topological relations with other parts of the car such as lights are tested to finally determine the number plate region. The experimental results have shown that the proposed method can be used even for detecting small size number plates where characters are not visible.

Rutin and Mineral Contents on Improved Kinds of Korean Buckwheat at Growing Stage (한국산 개량메밀의 성장시기에 따른 Rutin과 무기질의 함량)

  • For utilization of buckwheat as vegetable, rutin and minerals of the leaves at growing stages were investigated. The contents of crude protein and crude fat in seed of nine improved kinds of Korean buckwheat were $16.2{\sim}20.4%$ and $2.2{\sim}2.9%$ respectively. Ash content $(2.4{\sim}4.3%)$ in the improved kinds were higher than those in the native kinds. Content of crude fiber in the improved kinds were lower than those in the native kinds. Suwon 11 (0.12%) and Suwon 5 (0.11%) had high contents of rutin among the improved kinds. The composition of K, Ca, Mg and Fe in the improved kinds were better than that in the native kinds. Vegetable of the improved kinds had higher content of crude protein than the native kinds. Suwon 10 and 11 among vegetables of the improved kinds contained high amount of crude protein. Swon 5 had the highest content of rutin (0.40%) in the improved kinds. Suwon 5 was tested for the changes of rutin content in growing. Rutin content was 0.40% in the first growing stage, whereas 1.32% in the final growing stage. Insoluble materials in 10% HCl was also 69.8% in the first growing stage, whereas 4.68% in the final growing stage. Iron and calcium contents were increased with growing of vegetable.

  • Racodium therryanum from Korea is described here for the first time. This fungus is characterized by that it is isolated from conifer seeds and seedlings, including Abies, colonies are dark green to dark gray and intricate, and it forms chlamydospores in cultures. This pathogenic fungus was isolated from seeds of Abies koreana growing on Mt. Halla, Jeju island. The fungus stopped growth more than at $30^{\circ}C$ but grew even at $O^{\circ}C$. This fungus infected seeds of A. koreana under the snow during winter season. There is a high probability that this fungus affects the natural regeneration of A. koreana on Mt. Halla.

The Effect of Different Flaked Lupin Seed Inclusion Levels on the Growth of Growing Korean Native Bulls

  • Seventy-two Korean native bulls, with an average initial body weight of $247.2{\pm}2.34kg$ were used to determine the effect of different flaked lupin seed inclusion levels (0%, 15% and 30%; Control, LS15, LS30, respectively) on growth with a $3{\times}3$ randomized complete block design at the experimental farm of TS Corporation in Korea for 150 days. There were no significant differences in average daily gain (ADG) and feed:gain among treatments, However, LS30 increased concentrate intake and total feed intake (p<0.05) and decreased rice straw intake compared with Control and LS 15 (p<0.05), With inclusion of flaked lupin seeds, concentrate intake and total feed intake increased (p<0.01) and rice straw intake decreased (p<0.05) compared with Control. There were no specific changes in the health status of animals used in this experiment with inclusion of flaked lupin seeds in concentrates. Inclusion of flaked lupin seeds in the concentrates showed a tendency of reduced average daily total feed cost per kg weight gain compared with Control by 1.6% and 3.4%, respectively, in LS15 and LS30.

  • Rare earth metal films have been used as a buffer layer for growing ferroelectric t thin film or a seed layer for magnetic multilayer. But when it was deposited on s semiconductor substrates for the application of magneto-optic (MO) storage media, it i is difficult to exactly measure magnetic cons떠nts due to shunting current, and so it n needs to grow metal films on insulator substrate to reduce such effect. Recently, it w was reported that ultra-thin Pt layer were epitaxially grown on A12O:J by ion beam s sputtering in 비떠 high vacuum and it can be used as a seed layer for the growth of C Co-contained magnetic multilayer. In this stu$\phi$, Pt thin film were epi떠xially grown on AI2D3 ($\alpha$)OJ) by RF magnetron s sputtering. The crystalline structure was analyzed by transmission electron microscope ( (TEM) and Rutherford Back Scattering (RBS)/Ion Channeling. In TEM study, Pt was b believed to be twinned on AI잉3($\alpha$)01) su$\pi$ace about Pt(ll1) plane.Moreover, RBS c channeling spectra showed that minimum scattering yield of Pt(111)/AI2O:J(1$\alpha$)OJ) was 4 4% and Pt(11J)/AI2D3($\alpha$)OJ) had 3-fold symmetry.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of Azukibean seeds gained from virus-infected plant on the growth and yield of the next generation. In conventional cultivation, plants showed high infection rate, whereas plants in isolation cultivation showed normal growth without virus-infection. It was considered that virus-infection of Azukibean(variety Chungjupat) occurred not because of seed infection but because of insects-vector in growing period. And thread-shaped virus particles were observed in diseased leaf showing mosaic through electron microscope.

  • This study was aimed to investigate the effect of several stimulatory trements of flower and seed growth on the reproductive and vegetative growth of Tilia amurensis RUBP. The effects of mounded planting, girdling, root-pruning, bending and foliar fertilizer application on the fifteen to forty yead-old tress growing in the experimental plantation at the Konkuk University and the National forest at the Daegwanryung were measured. The following results were obtained: (1) The number and the longitydinal growth of internode were reduced by the treatments. The xylem growth of the longitudited more greatly than the bark growth by all the treatments. (2)The increasong rate of the brand angle as compared to that of the control was 2.11% in the girdling treatment, 31.61% in the mounded planting treatment, and 22.14% in root-pruning treatment. (3) The foliar application of fertilizer(N, P, K, and B) before flowering increased leaf and stem growth, that one after pollen fertilization increased the fruit growth. (4)The foliar application of fertilizer before flowering increased the xylem growth while that after pollen fertilization increased the bark growth. (5)The stimulatory effects of root pruning and branch bending on the flowering and seed growth were shown relatively less than that of mounded planting. The effect of the moinded planting on the yield of the seeds has remained continuously every year since planting the trees.

Effect of Priming and Preimbibition on Germination of Zoysiagrass Seeds (Priming과 침지처리가 들잔디의 종자발아에 미치는 영향)

  • Studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of priming and preimbibition on gerraination of unscarified and KOH-scarified zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) seeds, respectively. Germi-nation percentages at 35˚C of seeds primed in $KNO_3$ and Ca($NO_3$)$_2$ were significantly higher than that of untreated seeds. The optimum conditions for priming unscarified seeds were in aerated $KNO_3$ solution at O4 M for 4 days at 20˚C. No additional benefit of $GA_3$ on increasing germination was not found in seed priming with solution of $KNO_3$ + $GA_3$ or in seeds preimbibed with $GA_3$ after priming. Scarified seeds preimbibed with distilled water(DW) for 4 days at 20˚C germinated higher and with fewer days to 50% of total germination(T 50) than untreated seeds. Preimbibition with $GA_3$ solution at 50 ppm for 4 days at 5, 10, 15 and 20˚C enabled up to 97% of seeds to germinate and reduced days to T 50 about 1.1 to 1.2 days at 35˚C Especially, seeds preimbibed with $GA^2$˚$_3_2_1$$\times$ had greatly higher germination and lower T 50 than untreated or DW-preimbibibed seeds at 30˚C, which is inadequate to germination in general. Preimbibed seed performance was unchanged after storage at room temperature for 50 days. Seeds preimbibed with GA $_3$ had higher rate of seedling emergence and faster growth of shoot than untreated seeds after sowing at 30˚C in growing medium in growth chamber.
