  • A series of sedimentary rocks which are formed in the Tertiary are distributed around Samcheok(Samcheok-Pukpyoung basin), Younghae(Younghae basin), Pohang(Pohang basin), Gyeongju(Yangnam basin), Ulsan(Ulsan basin), Jeju(Seogyuipo formation) in the southern region of the Korean Peninsula. This study concerned with geological, geophysical, geotechnical properties of the unconsolidated rocks in the Pohang area. A consolidated rocks are classified as hard rock - soft rock - weathered rock - residual soil follows in degree of weathering. But unconsolidated rocks has soil properties as well as rock's at the same time. The results of field excursion, boring, borehole-logging, rock testing, geophysical survey, laboratory test are soft rock range, but the durability of the rock until the residual soil from the weathered rock. We accomplished the rock mass classification of the unconsolidated rocks.

  • This study aims to investigate how elementary school students understand the process of sedimentary rock formation based on their perception of geological time concepts. The research was conducted with 57 fourth-grade students from U Elementary School in B Metropolitan City. Data were collected using a modified and adapted version of the LIFT (The Landscape Identification and Formation Test) assessment tool developed by Jolley et al. (2012) and structured essay questions based on the interview framework used by Charles and McConnell (2018) on geological landscape formation. The qualitative analysis of the essay responses classified the students into three groups based on their expression of geological time concepts: the "Specific Time Concept" group, the "Vague Time Concept" group, and the "No Time Concept" group. Statistical verification was performed using the scores from short-answer questions about the sedimentary rock formation process. It was found that the "Specific Time Concept" group had a statistically significantly higher understanding of the sedimentary rock formation process compared to the "No Time Concept" group (p= .04). Additionally, instances of underestimation and overestimation of geological ages, as mentioned by Ault (1982), were observed in the specific cases. Furthermore, language networks were formed and centrality analyses were conducted based on the descriptive responses collected from each group. The analysis results showed that the "Specific Time Concept" group had a relatively good understanding of all processes involved in sedimentary rock formation, with geological time concepts well connected to the phenomena. The "Vague Time Concept" group did not have a well-connected understanding of the processes of deposition, compaction, cementation, lithification, and exposure but had a relatively good understanding of geological time concepts. The "No Time Concept" group explained the sedimentary rock formation process mainly focusing on deposition, compaction, and cementation, and had almost no understanding of geological time concepts. Additionally, community analysis using the centrality of time nodes showed that the "No Time Concept" group had difficulty associating the sedimentary rock formation process with the concept of time. Based on these conclusions, suggestions were made to provide insights into geological time.

  • The quality of groundwater in the central part of Taegu City is influenced by upstreams of Sin-stream and Beomeo-stream because the stream waters are main source of the groundwater, and chemical composition of the upstream waters has close relationship with andesite and monzonite in the igneous rock terrain. The pH of upstreams are weak acid ~ neutral in the igneous rock area and weak alkaline in the sedimentary rock area. Contents of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ in the streams are apparently high, and $Na^{+}$ content is only slightly high in the sedimentary rock area. But $K^{+}$ content is lower in the Panyaweol formation area than in the monzonite area. The contents of heavy metals and $N0_3^{-}$ are also higher in the sedimentary rock area of residential sections and industrial complexes than those in the igneous rock area. The groundwater is contaminated in comparison to the upstream water of the igneous rock areas, and there are some differences in pollution level between the Panyaweol formation area of residential sections and the Haman formation area of industrial complexes. K, Na, Ca, Mg, Cl, $SO_4$ and $NO_3$ contents in the Haman formation area are relatively higher than those in the Panyaweol formation area. But pH is nearly equal in the two areas. The content of heavy metal ions is still lower than the drinking water standard of Korea and only slightly differs in the two sedimentary rock areas. But the groundwater in the Haman formation area is considerably contaminated by Kongdanstream and Dalseo-stream.

  • The depositional conditions and paleo-oceanography of the Hoedongri Formation(Silurian) distributed in the Hoedongri, Jeongseon-Kun, Kangweon-Do, Korea were investigated. The major rock types and facies of the Hoedongri Formation consist of mudstone and wackestone facies in which the content of insoluble residues is relatively high (average. 17%). The sedimentary structures observed in the Hoedongri Formation being helpful to the interpretation of depositional conditions are; crypt-algalaminates, bird's eye structures, evaporite pseudomorphs, dolomite mottle structures, detrital quartz pockets and cross bedding. Based on the rock types, facies and sedimentary structures of the Hoedongri Formation, it seems that the Hoedongri Formation might be deposited in a saline supratidal and intertidal zone.

  • A standard slope stability analysis was undertaken for new railway sections, based on the slope of sedimentary rock layers and filling material (sand), to evaluate the stability of the cut-off slope in the section passing through a zone of sedimentary rock. The stability analysis was undertaken during the dry and rainy seasons, accounting for earthquake occurrence, based on slope design criteria. It was found that if the slope of the sedimentary rock formation was <10°, the effect on the safety rate of the cut-off slope was insignificant. Furthermore, a slope relief of 1:1.0 or more should be applied with slopes of 10~20°, and 1:1.2 or more with >20°. This study provides an important reference for evaluation of slope stability when railway and road construction is undertaken in areas of sedimentary rock.

  • This study examines the processes of rock weathering and tafoni formation targeting tafoni at Mt. Cheonsaeng, Gumi-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. In the study area, a frequency of tafoni is high in conglomerate and conglomeratic sandstone among regional sedimentary rocks, which means that an initial stage of the formation begins a breakaway of gravel from bedrock and also exfoliation from rock surface. Geomorphologically tafoni have intensively been developed at the southfacing slope with exposed rocks, which means that its formation was favorably controlled by environmental conditions including strong influences of mechanical weathering in winter and chemical weathering in summer times. The results of measuring water content at a tafoni-bearing rock surface using GIS interpolation analysis indicate that moisture rate in/around tafoni is higher than the periphery. Thus, it is considered that moisture distribution at a rock surface plays a role in its formation. Analysis of percipitation and secondary minerals induced by chemical weathering is in progress.

  • This paper presents a case study on the excavation of a long tunnel(16.2km) named as "Sol-An tunnel", which connects between Mt. Dongbaek station and Dokye station in the Young-dong Railroad. This site is located in a complex geological region with faults, cavities and coal measures as sedimentary rocks area. It occurred geotechnical problems unexpectedly by running water when tunnelling in limestone area within those geological structures. This tunnel caused surface settlements through the decrease of ground water level and soil washed-out affecting by cavities and faults within limestone formation. This paper presents a analysis of source through a close investigation and measures. And also, does preventive measures about returns of settlements reflected by properties of limestones.

  • The cut slopes in Jinju area constitute the Cretaceous Sedimentary rock which is one of the most poor ground conditions. The geological rocks of the cut slopes are correlated with Jinju Formation. Most of the rocks consist of Black Shale layer, but the lower parts consist of Alkorsic White Sandstone. So, It is characteristic of the differential weathering due to the difference of rock species. Moreover, vertical joints which concentrate on the released rock and weak rock fragments are accompanied with minor faults. We make out face mapping about each slopes through the detailed field-study and deduce RMR and SMR from the field data. The strength properties of rocks were obtained from references, indoor tests, and Back Analysis method. And, choosing properties were used in the stability analysis as stereographic projection and limit equilibrium analysis and we establish the countermeasures for the cut slopes.

  • The Cenozoic Era consists of two period , the Tertiary and the Quaternary Period. Weak rock types may include areas containing: 1) poorly cemented or uncemented sediments, 2) highly weathered rock, or 3) fault lines. Especially this paper deal with poorly cemented or uncemented sedimentary rocks in slope. Mechanical weathering is caused by physical processes such as absorption and release of water, and changes in temperature and stress at or near the exposed rock surface. It results in the opening of discontinuities, the formation of new discontinuities by rock fracture, the opening of grain boundaries, and the fracture or cleavage of individual mineral grains. Decomposition causes some silicate minerals such as feldspars to change to clay minerals. There was a strong negative correlation between water absorption and important engineering properties such as strength and durability.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare rock descriptors used by students in two different task contexts and to suggest the characteristics of a task suitable for learning of rocks. Twenty-four 3rd grade students were given descriptive and inferential tasks about three types of sedimentary rocks, and the rock descriptors used by the students were analyzed from a resources-based view (RBV) about students' conceptions. The result showed that the number of students using everyday descriptors to describe properties of the rocks and the frequency of using the everyday descriptors decreased in the inferential task. It was also revealed that the students using disciplinarily more appropriate descriptors were more likely to infer the process of rock formation in scientifically valid ways. By contrast, student inferences lacking scientific validity were mostly those that used everyday descriptors to express properties of the rocks. Based on these findings, it was concluded that inferential tasks would be suitable for student learning of rocks which is to be authentic to the essential features of earth science practices.
