  • This study presents scour processes and its characteristics around the pile groups using the large eddy simulation (LES) coupled with sediment transport and morphodynamic models. The scour and deposition around pile groups were significantly influenced by the pile interval. In case the non-dimensional pile interval was less than 3.75, the local scours as well as the contraction scour were observed around the pile group. On the other hand, in case the non-dimensional pile interval was more than 3.75, the contraction scour disappeared and only local scours were developed at individual piles. Change in the scour depth at piles located in the upstream was similar with the case of single pile, but the scour depth around piles located in the downstream was lower and showed a significantly different tendency due to the presence of piles in the upstream. The non-dimensional maximum scour depth around the pile group decreased as the pile interval increased.

  • The feasibility of incorporating mugwort powder as a value-added food ingredient in food products was investigated using yanggaeng as a model system. Mugwort powder was incorporated into yanggaeng at 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8% (w/w) levels by adding mugwort amounts based on the total weight of bean sediment. Lightness and yellowness significantly decreased but redness gradually increased. Hardness, gumminess, chewiness, and springiness increased with higher amounts of mugwort powder added in the formulation. Total polyphenol content and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical-scavenging activity were significantly influenced by the higher amounts of mugwort powder in the formulation. The highest level of incorporation (8%, w/w) had a considerable adverse effect on consumer acceptance in all attributes. Yanggaeng containing 2% mugwort powder is recommended for overall acceptance, as well as the functional properties of mugwort powder, without sacrificing consumer acceptability.

  • This study discusses characteristic of spatiotemporal changes of the sand barrier in the Nakdong estuarine for the last century, focusing on geomarphologic evolution and mobility of sand barriers in the view of coastal engineering. The Nakdong estuarine, the research subject, has a complexly changing natural environment by interaction between ground and marine elements such as ocean wave, tidal current, sediment, etc. Moreover, recently, unnatural geomorphologic changes (e.g., seaside reclamation, new harbor construction, etc.) has been radically increased in this area with increasing desire for coastal development. Because of this, its sand barrier has developed quite unstable condition. Therefore, to identify the development process of geomorphologic changes in this area, required is a close examination on historical characteristics of spatiotemporal changes of the sand barrier in relation to surrounding seaside reclamation and physical environmental changes. This study, based on the marine charts published in between 1927 and 1995 year, analyzes the length and area of the sand barrier for the last hundred years, and investigates the cause of the changes by looking into the change of water depth for the last two years and doing ocean-physical site observations. In conclusion, the sand barrier of the Nakdong estuarine expands toward the open sea by $7.4{\sim}26m$ in annual average, maintaining a fixed distance of $1,241{\sim}1.279m$, and its area is expected to increase about $2.8km^2$ annually. This is characterized by the wocean wave from the open sea and the discharge of Nakdong River.

  • In Kwangyang Bay, the south coast of Korea, surface sediments and sedimentation rates have been investigated to understand the distribution and variation of tidal flat sediments after the construction of sea dyke. The mean grain size of the surface sediments during autumn is coarser, and decrease from winter to summer except for temporarily coarsening in the early summer. The depositional processes are prevalent in spring, while erosional processes are dominant in summer and autumn. This seasonal variation of sedimentary processes show similar results monitored from 2001 to 2003 before the construction of sea dyke. In the northern area of the bay, net annual sedimentation rates show similar results monitored from 2001 to 2003 before the construction of sea dyke. However, in the western area of the bay, net annual sedimentation rates change from erosion-dominated to deposition-dominated environments. It is considered that the western area of the bay is changed to erosion-dominated environments, as a result of the changes of hydrodynamic conditions, caused by sea dyke construction.

  • Some blue-green algal species such as those in the genus Anabaena causing severe algal blooms can produce akinetes, resting spores, in aquatic ecosystems. Germinated akinetes staying in the sediment as "seed banks" grow into vegetative cells under favorable conditions of light intensity, nutrient, and temperature. Therefore, akinete plays an important role in forming the nuisance bloom. However, little information is available in the ecological study of akinetes compared to that of vegetative cells in Korea. This review reports ecological and physiological characteristics of akinetes, especially of the blue-green algal genus Anabaena. We also suggest the feasible area of akinetes in the freshwater ecosystems. We expect that the suggested studies associated with akinetes will contribute to further understanding the life cycle and ecology of Anabaena and other algae.

  • Five core sediments acquired from the Lake Shihwa are analyzed for variations of sedimentary environment and heavy metal pollution after the Shihwa seawall construction. The depositional environment of the study area is divided into anoxic, oxic and mixed suboxic conditions based on the C/N ratio and C/S ratios of organic matters. Controlling factors for redox condition are the water depth and the difference in industrial effluents supply. Correlations among geochemical elements (Mn, U, Mo) show a distinctive difference and thus can be used as an indicator of redox condition. The content of Al, Ti are dependent on the sediment characteristics, and the contents of heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb) indicate heavy metal pollution. The concentrations of heavy metals are higher near Shiswa-Banwol industrial complexies than the central part of Lake Shihwa. Especially, the accumulation of the heavy metal at the surface sediments near Shihwa-Banwol industrial complex are two to eight times higher than in the center of Lake Shihwa.

  • This study was conducted to confirm the CSOs characteristics, and to estimate treatment efficiency of CSO treatment process. Flowrate was average $53,500m^3$/d, maximum $58,100m^3$/d during dry season, but after rain-fall, the flowrate was increased more than twice that of the dry season. And, water pollution concentrations, such as $COD_{Cr}$, SS, $BOD_5$, TN and TP of after rain-fall, were also increased. Thus, for more efficient treatment of pollutants during rainy season, The vortex separator and continuous fiber filter devices were used. From the results on particle range, removal efficiency of particle was 99.7% at the particle size range of $40{\sim}100{\mu}m$ but decreased as 55-80% at the below $40{\mu}m$. The removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$, SS, TN and TP were approx. 70, 60, 70 and 50, respectively during the dry season and approx. 50, 50, 8 and 18% during the rainy season. Also, when compared with the primary sediment basin, $COD_{Cr}$, SS, TN and TP removal efficiencies were high. especially, at the case of TN and TP, TN was more removed than TP because of higher conversion factor value. But we needed more study for the injection of a coagulants to get more stable treatment efficiency for soluble pollutants. Consequently, This process can be used for CSOs treatment as well as replace the primary sedimentation basin during the dry season.

  • Squid by-product like viscera has just been recognized as one of the serious pollutants on the surrounding marine environment in Ulleung island of Korea. The effect as a marine pollutant, however, has not been examined and evaluated properly. It was carried out the comprehensive examination of the marine pollution by disposing squid by-products. The sediments and water qualities were investigated in several positions, including the dumping position around Ulleung island. It is also estimated a spreading of by-product in terms of estimating the sinking speed and evaluating the attracting characteristics as a feed. As a result, There were no significant pollutions of the sediment and water quality. The spreading of by-product by the local current was 2-2.5 times of the depth, and it will become longer in spring tide. It was confirmed that the squid by-product has attracting ability for local fish by acoustical survey. Furthermore, it can be useful for the local fish species as feeds.

  • We analyzed soil characteristics, soil seed banks, and plant communities in a small islet in Ganwol Lake from May 2005 to August 2006 to examine the forces driving plant settlement on sand bars and the effects of plant settlement patterns on nesting sites of little terns (Sterna albifrons). The soil nutrients contents in a site where the feces of wintering birds accumulate (N: 15.4 mg/kg, P: 10.5 mg/kg, LOI: 0.51 %, pH: 6.8) and a site where organic sediments accumulate (N: 20.7 mg/kg, P: 16.4 mg/kg, LOI: 0.40%, pH: 6.6) were much higher those of a control site which was not affected by bird feces and organic sediments (N: 4.1 mg/kg, P: 5.4 mg/kg, LOI: 0.41%, pH: 6.7). However, a seed bank was formed only on the site with accumulated organic sediments. Plant settlement was accelerated by feces from wintering birds and organic sediment accumulation on sand bars in Ganwol Lake. The percentage of area disturbed by human activities increased from 0.2% in May 2005 to 13.9% in August 2006, and the percentage of annual communities increased from 27.5% to 43.3%, but the percentage of open area decreased from 55.2% to 28.0% from May 2005 to August 2006. These increases in disturbed area and annual communities decreased the open area for breeding of little terns. The enlargement of P. communis and T. angustata communities was suppressed by irregular flooding. These results provide useful information for the management of little tern breeding sites for conservation purposes.
