  • The objective of this study Is to supply basic data for large reservoir sedimentation research In future and make suggestions to maintain and opera능 the reservoir more of efficiently. At first, previous studios about the estimation of sediment yield rate were reviewed in Korea. And the discharge rating curves of upstream stage gauging stations and the correlation between dam Inflow and stage discharge were analyzed. With the analysis results, the spec유c sediment rate of Soyanggang dam was estimated as 608 m3/km2/yr. It was similar to that of Soyanggang dam feasibility study and 1994's field surveys of the reservoir than that of 1983's field surveys. Because the sediment rating curves were derived under the low discharge conditions, It needs to be checked under the flood conditions. However, the suggested methods such as flowrate analysis and sediment estimation will be useful to the sediment studios In future. Key words . reservoir sediment, sediment yield rate, rating curve, flowrate analysis.

  • In this study, the reservoir sediment reduction methods for long-term operation are proposed by the analysis of both sediment deposit characteristics and sediment reduction effect by each method. To that end, a flowchart for sediment analysis in reservoir is established and sediment deposit is simulated by SMS-SED2D model. The sediment reduction methods which are sediment passing (sluicing), flushing, trapping, bypassing and mechanical removal are used. From the simulation results, the effective method for sediment reduction is operation which is coupled by both sediment passing with sand gate and sediment trapping with debris dam. And If sediment flushing will be used once a year after 50 years, conservation storage can be secured until 100 years after dam construction.

  • Analytical method of benzophenone (BP) in sediment and soil was developed by gas chromatography/mass selective detector/selected ion monitoring (GC/MSD/SIM). The ultrasonic extraction of US EPA (method 3550B) method and liquid-liquid extraction for sediment and soil samples were used for the analysis of BP from sediment and soil. BP was extracted with n-hexane. Organic layer was washed with 5% sodium chloride solution. 1∼2 l of the concentrated solution of organic layer was applied to GC/MSD. The retention time of BP peak was 11.10 min. Recovery (%) of BP by ultrasonication from sediment and soil samples was 96.0∼100.6% and 40.0∼83.0%, respectively. Recovery of BP by liquid-liquid extraction was 51∼59% in soil samples. The detection limit of BP in sediment and soil samples were determined to 0.1 ng/g.

  • In this study, flow-sediment discharge characteristics and relationships are estimated for the Cheonggyecheon basin, newly restored in 2005. Flow and sediment discharge measurement is performed on Ogansugyo, Majanggyo 2 and Yongdugyo during the rainy seasons in 2005-2006. The parameters of Clark UH are estimated using measured data, and sediment rating curves are derived by using grading and concentration analysis. Concentration time and storage coefficient of Clark UH are estimated 0.5 hr and 0.63 hr for Majanggyo 2, and 0.4 hr and 0.45 hr for Yongdugyo, respectively. Grain size of sediments are composed of fine silt to fine sand (0.008-0.25mm) based on the sediment grain size classification (Lane, 1947). Flow-sediment relationships derived by using concentration analysis shows that sediment discharge has no obvious relationship with flow discharge.

  • The pollution characteristics of water quality analysis and the heavy metal analysis of river sediment in the Western Nakdong river, and then a commercial tile using the polluted sediment was produced. The analytical results of the riverbed structure and the depth distribution in the Western Nakdong river were that Macdo Stream(site 2) was the deepest(13 ft). The analytical result of water quality showed that BOD was the highest in the Hogei Stream(site 6); COD, Syanduengchi Island(site 1);SS, Macdo Stream(site 2);T-N, Suanduengchi Island(site 1);T-P, Macdo Stream(site 2). Therefore the deeper the site was the higher the pollution concentration was. The result of heavy metal analysis of the river sediment was that Pb and Cr were the highest in Kangdong Bridge(site 9); Cd, Macdo Stream(site 2), so the deeper the site was the higher the pollution concentration was. The production of tile using the mixure of the polluted sediment and the raw material was successful, so the reuse of polluted sediment was possible.

  • General features of sediment budget for the Nakdong River before the Four Rivers Restoration Project were analyzed using surveying, dredging, and mining data for the past 20 years, as well as sediment data measured from the tributaries, and numerical modeling, etc. As a result of the sediment budget analysis of the Nakdong River before the Four Rivers Restoration Project, sediment inflow supplied from the watershed is $2,100,000m^3/yr$ and sediment outflow including mining and dredging volumes is $10,180,000m^3/yr$. Therefore, the bed change volume estimated by the sediment budget analysis is $-8,080,000m^3/yr$ of the bed erosion volume which is similar to the analysis result ($-8,300,000m^3/yr$) of natural and artificial bed changes using the surveyed data.

  • In order to analyze sediment transport characteristics of knickpoint migration, sediment transport length, and sediment transport weight through the under-flow type vertical lift gate, the hydraulic model experiment and dimensional analysis were performed. The correlations between Froude number and sediment transport characteristics were schematized. The multiple regression formulae for sediment transport characteristics with non-dimensional parameters were suggested. The determination coefficients of multiple regression equations appeared high as 0.618 for knickpoint migration, 0.632 for sediment transport length, and 0.866 for sediment transport weight. In order to evaluate the applicability of the developed hydraulic characteristic equations, 95% prediction interval analysis was conducted on the measured and the calculated by multiple regression equations, and it was determined that NSE (Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency), RMSE (root mean square), and MAPE (mean absolute percentage error) are appropriate, for the accuracy analysis related to the prediction on sediment transport characteristics of kickpoint migration, sediment transport length and weight.

  • This study investigated the effects of NPS(non point source) pollution reduction of sediment traps through field experiments. Various sizes of 4 sediment traps were applied in a upland field located in Gunwi and assessed the infiltration and storage effects as well as NPS pollution reduction effects of this technique. The characteristics of deposited soil in the sediment traps were also analyzed including distribution of particle size, soil texture, and chemical properties. The results showed that slightly different composition of soil particle size from each sediment trap with high proportion of 0.15mm and 0.25mm ranges of soil particle diameters, while the loamy sand is the main types of deposited soils in the sediment traps. Decreased NPS pollution were observed from the water quality analysis of the samples taken from the sediment traps. Further research need to be proceeded continuously to improve this technique in order to utilize on upland fields for management of agricultural NPS pollutions.

  • This st at the development of the adequate sediment yield formulas in Wi-Stream basin ; IHP representative basin in Korea. As a result of applying outstanding sediment yield formulas among the existing formulas, it is analyzed that including the Engelund & Hansen formula, Yang formula is proper to the Wi-Stream basin. And as a result of sensitivity analysis to the sediment parameters it is analyzed that Rijn and Actors & White formula is more sensible than any other formulas which has been applied the velocity and depth among the parameters. Also, Engelund & Hansen and Yang formula is less sensible than any other formulas. In Wi-Stream basin, it is analyzed that Yang and Engelund & Hansen formula is the most suitable sediment yield formula in this study. But because the existing formulas had been developed in foreign countries and applied the foreign natural livers and reservoirs, it makes careful use of Korean alluvial river and hoped that it will be developed the most adequate formula in Wi-Stream basin.

  • In the last decade, many methods such as greet chamber, reservoir, or debris barrier, have been utilized to manage and prevent muddy water problem. The Vegetative Filter Strip (VFS) has been thought to be one of the most effective methods to trap sediment effectively. The VFS are usually installed at the edge of agricultural areas adjacent to stream or drainage ditches, and it has been shown that the VFS effectively removes pollutants transported with upland runoff. But, if the VFS is installed without any scientific analysis of rainfall-runoff characteristics, soil erosion, and sediment analysis, it may not reduce the sediment as much as expected. Although Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model has been used worldwide for many hydrologic and Non-Point Source Pollution (NPSP) analysis at a watershed scale. but it has many limitations in simulating the VFS. Because it considers only 'filter strip width' when the model estimates sediment trapping efficiency, and does not consider the routing of sediment with overland flow option which is expected to maximize the sediment trapping efficiency from upper agricultural subbasin to lower spatially-explicit filter strip. Therefore, the SWAT overland flow option between landuse-subbasins with sediment routing capability was enhanced with modifications in SWAT watershed configuration and SWAT engine. The enhanced SWAT can simulate the sediment trapping efficiency of the VFS in the similar way as the desktop VFSMOD-w system does. Also it now can simulate the effects of overland flow from upper subbasin to reflect the increased runoff volume at the receiving subbasin, which is what is occurring at the field if no diversion channel is installed. In this study, the enhanced SWAT model was applied to small watershed located at Jaun-ri in South Korea to simulate diversion channel and spatially-explicit VFS. It was found that approximately sediment can be reduced by 31%, 65%, 68%, with diversion channel, the VFS, and the VFS with diversion channel, respectively.
