  • Objectives: Accurate assessment of energy expenditure is important for estimation of energy requirements in athletic children. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of accelerometer for prediction of selected activities' energy expenditure and intensity in athletic elementary school children. Methods: The present study involved 31 soccer players (16 males and 15 females) from an elementary school (9-12 years). During the measurements, children performed eight selected activities while simultaneously wearing the accelerometer and carrying the portable indirect calorimeter. Five equations (Freedson/Trost, Treuth, Pate, Puyau, Mattocks) were assessed for the prediction of energy expenditure from accelerometer counts, while Evenson equation was added for prediction of activity intensity, making six equations in total. The accuracy of accelerometer for energy prediction was assessed by comparing measured and predicted values, using the paired t-test. The intensity classification accuracy was evaluated with kappa statistics and ROC-Curve. Results: For activities of lying down, television viewing and reading, Freedson/Trost, Treuth were accurate in predicting energy expenditure. Regarding Pate, it was accurate for vacuuming and slow treadmill walking energy prediction. Mattocks was accurate in treadmill running activities. Concerning activity intensity classification accuracy, Pate (kappa=0.72) had the best performance across the four intensities (sedentary, light, moderate, vigorous). In case of the sedentary activities, all equations had a good prediction accuracy, while with light activities and Vigorous activities, Pate had an excellent accuracy (ROC-AUC=0.91, 0.94). For Moderate activities, all equations showed a poor performance. Conclusions: In conclusion, none of the assessed equations was accurate in predicting energy expenditure across all assessed activities in athletic children. For activity intensity classification, Pate had the best prediction accuracy.

  • It is well publicized that the existence of various endocrine disrupting chemicals threatens normal sexual development of many sedentary marine fishes in the coastal areas. However, a suitable marine fish species for efficient monitoring of this threatening has yet to be identified. One of the difficulties in estimating the effect of endocrine disruption in marine fish is the absence of clear distinction between testicular and ovarian structures at the early stages of sex differentiation. In search of a potential test species, we have investigated the microscopic structures of sexually undifferentiated and differentiated gonads and the susceptibility of gonadal differentiation to exogenous sex steroids during the sex differentiation period in a sedentary marine rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli. Male gonads in this species contained dark pigmentation that made them distinct from female gonads. Treatment either with $estradiol-17\;{\beta}(E_2)$ or $17\;{\alpha}-methyltestosterone$ (MT) significantly altered the sex ratios with the complete sex changes or the occurrence of ovotestis that was easily identified by the mixed structure of dimorphic gonads (coexistence of ovarian cavity/primary oocytes and dark pigmentation/seminiferous tubules). Results in this study suggest that S. schlegeli can be developed as a monitoring/test fish species for endocrine disruption in marine fish in the coastal areas.

  • Energy requirement is defined as energy expenditure in an energy equilibrium state. The doubly labeled water (DLW) method is considered the gold standard for measuring total energy expenditure (TEE). In 2002, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies established dietary reference intakes (DRIs) for Americans and Canadians, and the equations for estimated energy requirement (EER) were developed by using pooled data from studies that had applied the DLW method. Since 2005, these equations have been used for establishing EER in the DRI for Koreans. These equations based on age group include the physical activity (PA) coefficient determined by the PA level (PAL; sedentary, low active, active and very active) as well as body weight and height. The PAL values of Koreans calculated using the DLW method and PA diaries were determined to fall in the low active category (1.40~1.59). Therefore, the PA coefficient corresponding to 'low active' was applied to the EER equations. In recent years, with increasing number of people regularly engaging in various physical activities in Korea, EER is now separately presented for people with 'active' and 'very active' PALs. In the future, like the United States and Japan, Korea needs to expand the DLW research for developing EER predictive equations for Koreans. In addition, standardized guidelines should be prepared to accurately evaluate the PAL using the physical activity diary and the new PA classification table for Koreans.

  • This study aimed to analyze PDH(Pyruvate dehydrogenase) and protein expression of PDK4(Pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4), PDP1(PDH phosphatase 1), enzymes that are involved in the activation of PDH, in skeletal muscle and to investigate the concentration of thiamine administration in liver and muscle following 4 weeks of endurance training. Methods : 6 weeks old male ICR mice were divided into two groups: sedentary group (CON, n=10; TH, n=10), and exercise group (EX, n=10, THEX, n=10). Thiamine(thiamine tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide: TTFD) TTFD was orally administrated into TH and THEX groups in 50mg/kg body weight for 4 weeks. Treadmill training was performed in EX and THEX groups at about 70% of VO2max for 5 times a week for 4 weeks. Results : In this study, the concentration of glycogen was significantly increased following 4 weeks of endurance training, but a significant difference was not found following thiamine administration. Similarly, there was a significant effect of the training on PDH and the expression of PDK4 and PDP1 as PDH was increased by about 40% along with the increase in PDK4 and PDP1. However, there was no significant difference found between the groups following thiamine administration. Discussion : This result shows that there was no synergistic effect of thiamine administration, potentially due to adaptation of skeletal muscle from a long-term endurance training. Therefore, it will be necessary to consider the intake timing of thiamine and to analyze proteins that are related to PDH following the administration of complex carbohydrates.

  • This study was a secondary data analysis using statistics from the 13th (2017) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS) to investigate the relationship between health behaviors and physical activity among Korean adolescents. A total of 62,276 adolescents in middle and high schools enrolled in this study. Physical activity utilized moderate and vigorous physical activity variables. Health behaviors used smoking, drinking, eating, sedentary behavior, and sleep duration variables. Statistical analyses were performed applying complex sample analysis method. Chi-square tests were used to compare physical activity according to health behaviors. Multivariate multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between health behaviors and physical activity, adjusted for general characteristics. Current smoking and current drinking were associated with high levels of moderate and vigorous physical activity. Consuming fruits≥1 times/day, vegetables≥3 times/day, and sweet drinks≥3 times/week were associated with high levels of moderate and vigorous physical activity. Eating breakfast≥5 times/week was associated with high levels of moderate physical activity, but not with vigorous physical activity. Sedentary behavior≥2 hour/day was associated with low levels of moderate and vigorous physical activity. Sleep duration<7 hour/day was associated with high levels of moderate physical activity and low levels of vigorous physical activity. These findings suggest that since there is an interrelationship between health behaviors and physical activity among adolescents, intervention programs aiming at promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles should consider a multiple behavior approach rather than an individual behavior approach.

  • For professional drivers, there is a possibility to have musculoskeletal disorders on ankle joint due to repetitive pedaling operation. Therefore, this study have focused to examine ankle active range of motion (AROM), dorsiflexor strength, and pressure pain threshold (PPT) of tibialis anterior muscle (TA) in taxi drivers compared to a age-matched control group. Thirty male taxi drivers with at least 10 years of driving experience and thirty male sedentary workers were evaluated for ankle AROM, dorsiflexor strength, and PPT of TA. Multiple independent t-tests were used to identify significant differences between two groups. For the results, taxi drivers had significantly less AROM in dorsiflexion and greater AROM in external tibial rotation compared to the control group. Also, dorsiflexor strength and PPT of TA in taxi drivers was significantly lower than in the control group. This study indicates that the repetitive ankle movements associated with driving have an effect on ankle AROM, dorsiflexor strength, and PPT of TA and may lead to work-related musculoskeletal disorders on ankle. Professional drivers may need to be educated to prevent a potential musculoskeletal disorders associated with repetitive movement.

  • The purpose of this study was to characterize the genetic contribution to endothelial adaptation to exercise training. Vasoreactivity was assessed in aortas from four inbred mouse strains (129S1, B6, NON, and SJL) after 4 weeks of moderate intensity continuous exercise training (MOD), high intensity interval training (HIT) or in sedentary controls (SED). Intrinsic variations in endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation (EDR) to acetylcholine (ACh) as well as vasocontractile responses were observed across SED groups. For responses to exercise training, there was a significant interaction between mouse strain and training intensity on EDR. Exercise training had no effect on EDR in aortas from 129S1 and B6 mice. In NON, EDR was improved in aortas from MOD and HIT compared with respective SED, accompanied by diminished responses to PE in those groups. Interestingly, EDR was impaired in aorta from SJL HIT compared with SED. The transcriptional activation of endothelial genes was also influenced by the interaction between mouse strain and training intensity. The number of genes altered by HIT was greater than MOD, and there was little overlap between genes altered by HIT and MOD. HIT was associated with gene pathways for inflammatory responses. NON MOD genes showed enrichment for vessel growth pathways. These findings indicate that exercise training has non-uniform effects on endothelial function and transcriptional activation of endothelial genes depending on the interaction between genetic background and training intensity.

  • balance and to estimate daily energy requirement in 43 Korean female college students maintaining their usual diet and activity level. Energy intake and expenditure were measured in two separate periods about one month apart, each period lasting for 3 days. All the subjects participated in both periods. Energy intake was assessed by two methods ; weighed diet record and duplicate portion analysis of diet minus fecal and urinary excretion. Mean daily energy intake level calculated from diet records was 28.5 kcal/kgB.W(1, 476 kcal/day), and similar to the level of 27.8 kcal/kgB.W(1, 438 kcal/days) obtained from the chemical analysis of duplicate portions. Mean daily energy expenditure, calculated from activity records of each subject, was 34.6 kcal/kgB.W, or 1.39 times BMR, which corresponds to light activity level. Mean daily energy balance of subjects was -5.9 kcal/kgB.W. Mean daily requirement of energy, calculated from the activity records of the subjects, was 34.6 kcal/kgB.W, similar to the level of the Korean RDA for light activity level. The results of this study indicate that 1) the activity level of the study subjects corresponds to the sedentary level ; 2) present Korean RDA for energy for light activity is adequate for the subjects ; and 3) the subjects should increase their energy intake since they are largely in negative energy balance.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of vitamin E supplementation on radical scavenger activity and immune responses in female judo athletes(n=18). The age and sex matched sedentary students were used as controls(n=15). The initial plasma vitamin E concentration, lipid peroxide level and radical scavenger activity (RSA) were not different between two groups. The supplementation of $\alpha$-tocopheryl acetate(400IU/d) for 4 weeks significantly increased plasma vitamin E concentration of the subjects in both groups. In addition, the decrease in thiobarbituric acid reactive substance(TBARS)(p<0.05) and enhancement of RSA(p<0.05) were observed in both groups. Percentages of total T-cells in the athletic group was lower than that in the control group(p<0.05). However, the ratio of CD4 / CD8(helper T-cal $l^pressor T-cell) was higher in the sports group, due to more decrease in CD8 subset than in CD4 subset. The concentrations of IgG and IgM in the sports group were significantly lower than those in the control group(p<0.05). Therefore, severe training of the athletic group seems to be associated with the changes of supplementation. In conclusion, vitamin E supplementation (400IU/d, 4 weeks) of the female university students improved antioxidative activities of the blood, by decreasing lipid peroxide and enhancing radical scavenger activity. Percentages of T lymphocytes and IgG and IgM concentrations in the athletic group were lower than those in the control group. Meanwhile, vitamin E supplementation had no effects on immune status in both groups.ps.

  • This study investigated the effects of Oligonol intake on cortisol, interleukin (IL)-$1{\beta}$, and IL-6 concentrations in the serum at rest and after physical exercise loading. Nineteen healthy sedentary male volunteers participated in this study. The physical characteristics of the subjects were: a mean height of $174.2{\pm}2.7$ cm, a mean weight of $74.8{\pm}3.6$ kg and a mean age of $22.8{\pm}1.3$ years. Each subject received 0.5 L water with Oligonol (100 mg/day) (n = 10) or a placebo (n = 9) daily for four weeks. The body composition, the white blood cell (WBC) and differential counts as well as the serum cortisol, IL-$1{\beta}$, and IL-6 concentrations were measured before and after Oligonol intake. The cortisol concentration and serum levels of IL-$1{\beta}$ and IL-6 after Oligonol intake were significantly decreased compared to before treatment (P < 0.01, respectively). In addition, the rate of increase of these factors after exercise was decreased compared to the placebo group. There was no change in the WBC and differential cell counts. These results suggest that oral Oligonol intake for four weeks had a significant effect on inhibition of inflammatory markers in healthy young men.
