We compared three nations' diets on Year 2000 Korean, American and Mediterranean in the aspect of contribution of each to the development of cardiovascular diseases. We searched all the available evidences published. Korea has a very low incidence of cardiovascular diseses compared to the other countries even though they are increasing recently. In addition to many risk factors to these defenerative diseases such as diabetes millitus, hypertension, smoking, hyperlipidemia, sedentary lifestyle, etc., dietary factors are also contributing a lot to their development. High calorie, trans fatty acids, cholesterol, saturated fatty acids, alcohol, salt intakes are examples. Korean diet has superiority of low calorie, low fat, good fat proportion, high omega-3 fatty acids, vegetables, beans, and garlic and onions These are believed to contribute to low incidence of cardiovascular diseases in Korea. Korean diets was also found to have some issues for improvement such as high salt, low calcium, and higher use of barbequed meats. We concluded Korean people stay better off with Korean diet with some modifications.

The PT program provides relief to most patients with symptom of TOS. So the purpose of our study is to evaluate a effects of PT program in patients with TOS. PT program included orthopaedic manual therapy with the aim of restoring the function of the upper thoracic aperture is to be recommended, and long-term following is advisable. 1. Mean treatment duration was over an 11.4 day(range 4~24). 2. At the follow-up evaluation, 88.1% of the patients were satisfied with the effects of their therapy. 3. 73% of the patients returened to work after PT and 88% of the patients carried through the recommendations given at discharge during follow up. 4. Normalized grip strength and Tinel' sign predicted patient satisfaction(p< .001) and return to work(p< .001). 5. Return to work was more often successful if the work was sedentary rather than heavy (p< .05).

The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of thermal comfort index and to present the thermal comfort range through regression analyses and experiment in a radiant floor heating system laboratory. The results were compared to the comfort zone of ISO-7730, and the applicability of the thermal comfort index to a radiant floor heating system was studied. On comparing the sedentary posture on the floor to sitting on the chair, the comfort zone and the neutral point of comfort index showed different values. It is considered that the influence of conduction from floor to the human is sufficient. Moreover, we could find a correlation between the thermal sensation votes of subjects, and the comfort indexes were lower than those by calculation.
Insulin resistance is a risk factor for stroke or recurrent stroke. Sedentary behavior increases insulin resistance. This study aimed to identify the relationship between physical impairments and functions and insulin resistance, examining which physical impairments specifically influence insulin resistance the most. The subjects of this study were 63 stroke patients. The subject's insulin resistance and physical impairments and functions were measured using the Chedoke-McMaster Stroke Assessment (CMSA) and Stroke Impairment Assessment Set (SIAS). The study results exhibited that insulin resistance is statistically significantly related to the variable of foot according to the CMSA(r=.95, p<.05) and to the variable of lower extremity sensory function (touch) in relation to the SIAS(r=.91, p<.05). This study also revealed close correlations between insulin resistance and the variables of ankle control(${\beta}=-1.05$, p<.05) and low extremity tactile sensations(${\beta}=-1.82$, p<.05).

Pilots' fatigue is one of the most serious threat to flying safety. Fatigue is influenced by many factors like sleep deprivation, daily activities, aging, stress, etc. This study was designed to investigate military pilots' daily activities. 20 pilots' daily activity was monitored by activity monitor, Fitbit(R), and the survey about sleep time and flight time was conducted. They placed Fitbit(R) on their waist for 5 days. During flight, they removed Fitbit(R) that had been used for checking their steps and walking distances. It was found that the average sleep time is 6.7 hours for fighter pilots. It was a little shorter than average sleep time for adults, 8 hours. Average steps per day was 6,838 which is more than sedentary worker's but less than active worker's. Their daily activities were not as high as we had expected. But their sleep time was very short. Flight surgeons should recommend them to take a rest and get sleep during rest period.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of resveratrol supplementation on oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation induced by strenuous exercise in rats. The rats were randomly divided into five groups: a sedentary control group, an exercise control group, and three treatment exercise groups administered increasing doses of resveratrol (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg body weight). Resveratrol was administered by oral gavage once daily for four weeks. At the end of the four-week period, the rats performed a strenuous exercise on the treadmill, and the levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), malondialdehyde (MDA), 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4-HNE), and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) were measured. The results showed that resveratrol supplementation had protective effects against strenuous exercise-induced oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation by lowering the levels of LDH, CK, MDA, 4-HNE, and 8-OHdG in the serum or muscle of rats. These beneficial effects are probably owing to the inherent antioxidant activities of resveratrol.
Immoderate energy intake, a sedentary lifestyle, and aging have contributed to the increased prevalence of obesity, sarcopenia, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. There is an urgent need for the development of novel pharmacological interventions that can target excessive fat accumulation and decreased muscle mass and/or strength. Adipokines, bioactive molecules derived from adipose tissue, are involved in the regulation of appetite and satiety, inflammation, energy expenditure, insulin resistance and secretion, glucose and lipid metabolism, and atherosclerosis. Recently, there is emerging evidence that skeletal muscle and the liver also function as endocrine organs that secrete myokines and hepatokines, respectively. Novel discoveries and research into these organokines (adipokines, myokines, and hepatokines) may lead to the development of promising biomarkers and therapeutics for cardiometabolic disease. In this review, I summarize recent data on these organokines and focus on the role of adipokines, myokines, and hepatokines in the regulation of insulin resistance, inflammation, and atherosclerosis.
Serum lipid and lipoprotein levels are influenced by genetic factors, and exorcise increases the concentrations of cardio-protective parameters such as high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) and apolipoproteinAI (apoAI) in human serum. In the present study, we tested the effect of adaptation to endurance exercise on the association of a genetic polymorphism (Pst 1 RFLP) in the apoAI gene with these biochemical parameters. The genotype and allele frequencies for the Pst 1 RFLP were not significantly different between the elite athletes and sedentary controls (P>0.05). There were also no significant associations between the Pst 1 RFLP of the apoAI gene and the biochemical parameters in elite athletic group. Thus, our results suggest that the Pst 1 RFLP of the apoAI gene was not significantly associated with the serum apoAI and HDL-cholesterol concentrations as well as athletic performance in Koreans.
While the rising epidemic of obesity is primarily attributed to a sedentary lifestyle, poor dietary habits, and the aging of the population, secondary causes of obesity generally go undetected and untreated. These include endocrinological disorders, such as Cushing's syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, hypothalamic obesity, hypogonadism, and hypothyroidism, as well as genetic, syndromic, and drug-related obesity. We present an overview of the major disorders associated with obesity, highlighting the pathophysiologic mechanisms and discussing the diagnostic and treatment strategies that are most helpful to practicing physicians in recognizing and treating these generally under-detected and undertreated disorders.
