  • Bamboo culm comprises internodes and nodes and is tapered from the bottom to the top. Anatomically, bamboo culm comprises vascular bundles and parenchymal base tissue. The gross anatomical structure of a transverse section of any culm internode is determined by the shape, size, arrangement, and number of vascular bundles. The purpose of this research was to examine the morphology of culm and the distribution and shape of vascular bundles in Ampel bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris). Bamboo culms were harvested from the base. Test samples were obtained from a central 2-cm long segment of each internode across the entire length of the culm. Results showed an uneven spread of vascular bundles in the internode cross-section. Transitioning from the outer to the inner layer of the internode, the number of vascular bundles per unit area decreased and their shape was variable. The size of vascular bundles in the middle layer of the internode was greater than that of those in the outer and inner layers. The shape of vascular bundles was circular in the outer layer, which gradually transformed into vertical oval toward the middle layer and horizontal oval toward the inner layer. Vascular bundles were of type III and IV in the bottom of the culm and type III in the middle to the top of the culm.

  • This paper aims to evaluate quantitatively the springback characteristics that evolve in the sheet metal forming of an S-rail in order to understand the reasons of shape inaccuracy and to find a remedy. The geometrical springback is classified into six modes: angle change of punch and die shoulders, wall curl, ridge curl, section twist, and axial twist. The measuring method for each springback mode is suggested and quantitative measurements were made to determine the tendency towards shape accuracy. Forming experiments were conducted with four types of steel sheets that have different tensile strengths, which were 340MPa, 440MPa, 590MPa and 780MPa, in order to evaluate the effect of the tensile strength and the bead shape on the springback behavior. Springback tendencies show that they are greatly affected by the tensile strength of the sheet and the shape of the tools. Almost all springback modes except the section twist and the axial twist show a linearly increasing trend as the tensile strength of the sheet increases. The results can be used as basic data for design and for compensation of the press die geometry when forming high strength steels which exhibit large amounts of springback.

  • Purpose: This is aimed to evaluate the seismic fragility of curved bridge structure with I-shape girder subjected to 12 high frequency ground motions based on Gyeongju earthquake. Method: The linear elastic finite element model of curved bridge with I-Shape cross section was constructed and them linear elastic time history analyses were performed using the 12 artificial ground motions. Result: It was found that displacement response(LS1, LS2) was failed after PGA 0.1g and the stress response also showed failure after PGA 0.2g. Conclusion: The curved bridge with I-shape girder was sensitive to high frequency earthquakes.

  • The submerged U-shape breakwater interaction with the solitary wave is simulated by the Boussinesq equations using the finite-difference scheme. The wave reflection, transmission, and dissipation (RTD) coefficients are used to investigate the U-shape breakwater's performance for different crest width, Lc1, and indent breakwater height, du. The results show that the submerged breakwater performance for a set of U-shape breakwater with the same cross-section area is related to the length of submerged breakwater crest, Lc1, and the distance between the crests, Lc2 (or the height of du). The breakwater has the maximum performance when the crest length is larger, and at the same time, the distance between them increases. Changing the Lc1 and du of the U-shape breakwaters result in a significant change in the RTD coefficients. Comparison of the U-shape breakwater, having the best performance, with the averaged RTD values shows that the transmission coefficients, Kt, has a better performance of up to 4% in comparison to other breakwaters. Also, the reflection coefficients KR and the diffusion coefficients, Kd shows a better performance of about 30% and 55% on average, respectively. However, the model governing equations are non-dissipative. The non-energy conserving of the transmission and reflection coefficients due to wave and breakwater interaction results in dissipation type contribution. The U-shape breakwater with the best performance is compared with the rectangular breakwater with the same cross-section area to investigate the economic advantages of the U-shape breakwater. The transmission coefficients, Kt, of the U-shape breakwater shows a better performance of 5% higher than the rectangular one. The reflection coefficient, KR, is 60% lower for U-shape in comparison to rectangular one; however, the diffusion coefficients, Kd, of U-shape breakwater is 35% higher than the rectangular breakwater. Therefore, we could say that the U-shape breakwater has a better performance than the rectangular one.

  • The purpose of this study is to consider the correlational factors of space sections based on the fact the exhibition space plays an important role as a medium of displaying art works. And an another purpose is to investigate the characteristics of various types of exhibition unite space from which In intend to suggest basic sources of exhibition design. I classified domestic and foreign museum which are chosen as objects of study according to form and shape of a section plan. Then comparing exhibition space's form and scale exhibited genre lighting system layout composition display and its correlation with an already established thesis on museum architecture I will infer the characteristics of each type of a space. From these studies proper display conditions requested at the museum are different from the genre and property of the exhibited objects. And lighting system display angel of view and appreciation type affect the exhibition area. The shape of space classifies types of section which cause space's characteristics.

  • Stress distribution analysis was implemented by using finite element method for the lower arm connecting Independent front suspension. Results were obtained for the 8 load conditions and for the 3 types of section (I, H and H+I). On the basis of it, the shape and dimensions of lower arm were optimized. Finally it was pointed out that the H type has an most satisfied strength, among 3 section types and highest safety factor and yield strength in each case of load condition.

  • In this paper, an optimization method of thin walled beam structures is proposed, Stiffnesses of a thin walled beam are characterized by the thickness of thin plates and the shape of the typical section of the beam. Explicit formula for section properties such as area, area moment of inertia, and torsional constants are derived using the response surface method. The explicit formula can be used for the optimal design of a structural system which consists of complicated thin walled beams. A vehicle structural system is optimized to demonstrate the proposed method.

  • Porthole die extrusion has a great advantage in the forming of hollow section tubes difficult to produce by conventional extrusion with a mandrel on the stem. Because of the complicated structure of die assembly, extrusion process as a forming of hollow section tubes has been investigated experimentally Therefore, analytic approaches that are useful in profitable die design and in the improvement of productivity are inevitably demanded Welding strength is affected by many parameters, which are such as extrusion ratio, extrusion speed, die shape, porthole number, bearing length, billet temperature and mandrel shape. In this paper, the parameters, which are such as billet temperature, bearing length and tube thickness, are examined. The welding pressures are examined through 3D simulation of non steady state and compared with experimental results.

  • The differential equations governing free vibrations of the elastic arches with rectangular hollow section are derived in polar coordinates, in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. Natural frequencies is computed numerically for circular arches with both clamped ends and both hinged ends. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with the rotatory inertia, as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters: the breadth ratio, the thickness ratio and the shape ratio.

  • In this study, flow around rudder is analyzed by utilizing the numerical calculation, and the rudder open water test is performed to validate the calculation. The aim of this study is to design the new rudder shape to improve manoeuvring performance. In first, flow around two-dimensional rudder section is analyzed to understand the characteristics of section profile. And the calculation for all-movable rudders is performed and compared with results of rudder open water test. It is hard to numerically predict the drag force because the value is sensitive to the turbulence modeling and grid spacing near the wall. However, the lift force is predicted well. And we can prove that concave profile of the rudder section produce more lift and torque than convex one as a experiment. However PANEL method that ignore viscous effect cannot distinguish the difference of them. So, we can look for the numerical tool to be developed the new rudder shape.
