Pulmonary surfactant is a lipoprotein complex composed primarily of phospholipid and lung specific apoproteins that reduces surface tension in the alveolus and maintains alveolar stability at low lung volume. Adult respiratory distress syndrome still carries a very high morbidity and mortality. The surfactant system is vital to the maintenance of proper lung function, any type of surfactant deficiency, whether primary or secondary, will contribute significantly to the development of pulmonary pathophysiology. Various mechanisms in adult respiratory distress syndrome may be responsible for such alterations in the surfactant system. Surfactant replacement is now an established treatment for neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, reducing both incidence of complications and mortality. With the current knowledge of surfactant physiology and the pathophysiology of the adult respiratory distress syndrome exogenous surfactant treatment or stimulation of endogenous surfactant synthesis and secretion will prove to be beneficial in preventing and treating the adult respiratory distress syndrome. The study of clinical surfactant therapy for adult respiratory distress syndrome is just beginnig and this can be viewed as an area with exciting potential. As soon as surfactant preparations become more widely available trials should begin to define the role of surfactant treatment in the adult respiratory distress syndrome as an adjunct to available treatment techniques.
A fire extinguishing agent containing non-ionic surfactant which is environmentally friendly and low cost was prepared and tested its characteristics and fire fighting performance. Ethoxylated sorbitol septaoleate, containing 40 moles of ethylene oxide as the primary surfactant, linear ethoxylated secondary alcohol, containing 7-11 moles ethylene oxide as the secondary surfactant, and ethoxylated sorbitol trioleate, containing 40-50 moles of ethylene oxide were used in the agent. It is demonstrated that the water solution containing 6 wt% agent is capable to extinguish gasoline fire when it is put into the fire four times as much as gasoline. According to the field test of class B fire with a unit 1, it is found that the fire fighting performance is directly proportional to the concentration of surfactant in the agent.
Viscarin is a tradename given to viscosifying carrageenans manufactured by FMC BioPolymer. The suitability of Vis car ins as rheology agents in mild cleansing applications has been investigated. Rheological properties, foam volume and clarity were measured to determine the impact of including 1 % Viscarin on 10% solutions of the following surfactants: acylglutamate, cocoamidopropyl betaine, PEG-80 laurate, sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium lauryol sarcosinate. Viscosity, pseudoplasticity and thixotropy of Viscarin/surfactant solutions varied with surfactant type. In all cases, the addition of Viscarin substantially increased viscosity. For example, at a shear rate of 1 sol, all surfactant solutions had viscosities <0.1 Pa s while viscosities of Viscarin/surfactant solutions ranged from 10 to 60 Pa s. By comparison, a solution of 1 % Viscarin had a viscosity of 0.3 Pa s. Clarity of surfactant solutions decreased in all cases on the addition of Viscarin. However, it was found that by including a mild solubilizing surfactant, such as PEG 40 hydrogenated castor oil, crystal clarity could be maintained in Viscarin/surfactant solutions. Viscarin increased the foam volume of sodium lauryolsarcosinate solutions from 10 ml to 220 ml and had no impact on the foam volume of the other surfactants tested. These results were used to formulate a clear, ultra-mild foaming cleansing gel based on sodium lauryol sarcosinate and Viscarin without the need for a secondary, foam-boasting surfactant. A mild shampoo was also formulated. Both products have excellent skin-feel and are capable of suspending bubbles and solid inclusions.

Porous clay ceramics was fabricated using the surfactant as a foaming agent in the secondary-clay produced at Young-Am area in Chun-Nam province. The concentration of surfactant in ceramic slurry was the key factor controlling the pore characteristics and physical properties of the porous ceramics. The more increase of the surfactant concentration increase the more foaming ability and the stability of foamed layer were improved, but the foaming ability was limited within 6.0 wt% of surfactant because the initial viscosity of the slurry increased with increasing the amounts of surfactant. The formed specimen were sintered at both $1150^{\circ}C$ and $1200^{\circ}C$, the porous ceramics showed 0.9 of specific gravity, 50% of water absorption, 45% of apparent porosity, 14% of shrinkage and 70 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of compressive strength.

Synthetic pulmonary surfactants consisting of a mixture of phospholipids with synthetic peptides based on human surfactant-associated protein SP-B were prepared. These surfactants were analyzed f3r their secondary structures by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and NMR spectroscopy. Two synthetic peptides (SP-B(3), SP-B(4)) combined with the phospholipid mixture displayed significant surfactant properties. The CD spectra showed that the u-helical propensities of the peptides in DPC micelles. In the NMR spectroscopy, the tertiary structures of SP-B(3) show that it has $\alpha$-helical structure from Gln5 to Arg13 in DPC micelle and SP-B(4) show that they have $\alpha$-helical structure from Gln5 to Leu12 in DPC micelle. Based on these structures, truncated peptides originated from SP-B protein, can be designed as effective synthetic surfactants for clinical use.

Analysis of two-dimensional secondary flows given by an oscillatory motion of a liquid with a free surface in a rectangular container subject to a linear reciprocating force is performed by numerical and experimental methods. FVM is used for the numerical computation of the two-dimensional flows. We considered the effects of the free-surface properties such as the surface tension and the dilatational viscosity. The boundary-layer analysis as well as an experiment is used in establishing the free surface properties. The secondary flow patterns are visualized by a laser sheet. It is shown that the secondary flow patterns predicted by the numerical methods are in good agreement with the experimental results.
Concentrated liquid detergents have 2~3 times higher surfactant contents [35~45% (w/w)] compared to those of normal type detergents. In general, a single surfactant forms a lyotropic liquid crystal (LC) phase when the concentration is in the region of 30~60% (w/w). Whereas the concentrated liquid detergent at about 40% (w/w) concentration in a mixed surfactant system shows an opaque appearance of gel or LC. In order to meet consumer needs and preference for product appearance, we applied hydrotropes and various surfactants systems in concentrated liquid detergents to obtain an opaque gel-phase and also a clear transparent phase at even below zero $^{\circ}C$ temperature. The more effective hydrotropes for making concentrated liquid detergents are 1,6-hexanediol, adipic acid and dipropylene glycol (DPG) which have two hydrophilic groups in both terminated positions. In order to prepare an excellent concentrated liquid detergent, good hydrotropes alongside secondary type surfactants like LAS and SAS were used. The formation of LC phase of concentrated liquid detergents at about 40% (w/w) concentration could be prevented by the use of both hydrotropes and secondary type surfactants. The result indicate that concentrated detergents having excellent low temperature stability and controlled viscosity can be prepared.

Micellar catalysis is an essential part of theoretical and experimental curricular. The sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) catalyzed reaction between glycine and potassium permanganate in acidic medium is an ideal kinetic experiment for the secondary and undergraduate physical chemistry laboratory, to show the effect of micellar catalysis on rate of the reaction. The reaction is conducted both with and without SDS to observe the rate enhancement in the presence of surfactant. To show surfactant catalysis a plot between k and [SDS] is plotted. As surfactant catalysis is observed even before the critical micelle concentration of SDS, this pre-micellar catalysis can be understood in the light of positive co-operativity. The value of positive cooperative index (n) has been found to be 2.37. Further, dependence of the reaction rate on substrate and oxidant concentrations is also discussed. The reaction follows pseudo-first-order kinetics. The overall reaction is second order, with first-order dependence on both glycine and permanganate concentrations. The theory of surfactant catalysis is also discussed. With the conditions specified in the experiment, total reaction times are in 3~4 hours lab session, thus allowing several data sets to be acquired in a single laboratory period. Preparation of solutions and procedure is also given in detail.

Sericin is usually abandoned after the degumming process. However, it could be a valuable bioresource if an economically efficient recovery process could be set up. In this study, sericin was recovered directly from the degummed waste solution by adding calcium chloride, which induced the precipitation of the surfactant, sodium oleate, by charge interaction. The recovery yield was maximum when 10% of calcium chloride was added. Further increase in the calcium chloride concentration induced the precipitation of sericin. The recovered sericin had a molecular weight distribution similar to that of the hot-water-extracted sericin; but some highmolecular- weight sericin could not be recovered. The secondary structure and amino acid composition of the recovered sericin were similar to those of conventional hot-water-extracted sericin. We expect that sericin recovered from the degummed waste solution could be an alternative to the hot-water-extracted sericin, which is widely used in various applications.
Recently, application fields of non-metallic minerals by utilizing their structure properties are broadening. Especially, layered minerals have not only excellent shielding or covering ability but also absorbing and storing characteristics of chemical elements between a layers. We considered about the above mentioned characteristics and added functional substances onto their surfaces for the preparation of new environmentally friendly functional materials. In this study, natural graphite and sericite were mainly used to produce for the new environmentally friendly functional building materials. Graphite surfaces were modified with a surfactant (Alkyl Benzyle Demethyle Ammonium Chloride) for anti-bacillus and penicillium. Surface modification mechanism are that primary adsorption by differential zeta potential between graphite and ABDM and secondary adsorption by interaction between surfactant chains take place. Surfactant layers were fully formed and it was expected up to 99.7% up the efficiency of anti-bacillus and penicillium. Also the prepared functional samples have a effect to improve a various efficiency such as electromagnetic wave shield(up to 95%), deodorization(up to 80%), heat storage(5%) etc.
