Based on the result, this study suggests followings. First, sequencing strategy of EE curriculum will be expected very efficaciously. Secondly, there is need to empasize daily experiences of EE beyond the formal subject matter. Thirdly and ultimately, thers is need to reform school curriculum centered EE. • The purposes of this study are to identify the types of teacher efficacy, to present a theoretical base for teacher efficacy among Home Economics teachers and subsequently, to improve the quality in the practices of home economics education. To achieve these purposes, 263 secondary school home economics teachers were surveyed by the prime investigator. The three research questions of this study were: 1. What are the individual characteristics, the environmental characteristics and the trends of teacher efficacy among secondary school home economics teachers? 2. What is the factor in teacher efficacy among secondary school home economics teachers? 3. What are the types of teacher efficacy among secondary school home economics teachers? For these research questions, factor analysis and cluster analysis were conducted. The factor analysis on teacher efficacy with a survey of secondary school home economics teachers produced 5 factors of efficacy: classroom management, needs assistance, instructional strategies, environmental assistance and teaming assistance. The teacher efficacy had a mean of 3.58 and the home economics teachers showed a slightly higher level in teacher efficacy. Of the 5 efficacy factors, classroom management showed the highest level (M=3.89), followed by learning assistance (M=3.81), instrumental strategies (M=3.57), environmental assistance (M=3.42) and needs assistance (M=3.19). Overall, the teachers had positive feeling in teacher efficacy. Three types of teachers were found in the types of teacher efficacy: the supreme, the average and the efforts-needy. Those types were identified based on the mean scores of the five sub-domains from the factor analysis. To enhance the teacher efficacy, the needs assessments for the students and behavioral adjustment issues should be reflected in the curriculum of teacher education and workshops. The primary investigator suggested that continuous and long-term plans for teacher education need to be developed because short-term plans may not be effective in changing attitudes such as teacher efficacy.

  • This research aims to collect informations which is necessary to develop a curriculum for the environmental education of elementary and secondary schools. We developed a questionnaire concerning the present situations of environmental education in schools and needs assessment items about environmental education. The questionnaire were distributed to a sample of elementary and secondary school teachers with diverse grades and locations. The results of our reserch are as fellows: 1. The awareness of key concepts related to environment problems. They are not aware of ecological interdependence but just focus on the result of environmental deterioration 2. The awareness of importance of environmental education: Teachers prefer campaigns or legislations to environmental education. They want to take an Immediate action rather than a fundmental method like education in order to solve environmental problems 3. The awareness of relationships between environmental problems and natural or man-made circumstances: Most teachers emphasize recycle and reuse of the materials such as batteries, papers, plastics, cans. and bottles. but do not teach the importance of ecology. Only science and environment teachers do. 4. Environmentalism or ecology? Ideally teachers accept the importance of ecology, but in reality they cohoose environmentalism. 5. On the content and method of environmental education: Teachers insist that both environmental instruction and practical, first-hand experience should be given to not only elementary but secondary students, and that most of subject matters should deal with environmental issues. 6. On the situations and tasks of environmental education: School teachers indicate that they could not instill positive patterns of conduct toward environment in students. They think that both insufficient in-service training about environment and cooperation among teachers themselves are partially responsible for it.

  • Secondary school environmental education is offered mostly in extra-curricular activities, not included in the school curriculum. Therefore, drawing out its curriculum has been left to teachers' discretion. Teachers' beliefs in EE have much more influence on the selection of content of EE than any other psychological factors. It follows that the reality of school EE depends on what teachers believes about EE and which content of EE they select according to their beliefs. This study is to research the realities of the secondary school EE: examine teachers' beliefs about EE and analyse environmental views in their environment-related programs; examine whether teachers' programs reflect their beliefs and environmental views; identify the factors which teachers inhibit teachers from their expression of these beliefs. To identify what perspective was reflected to these programs, this study employs environmentalism. Environmentalism can be classified into 3 categories: environmental management; deep ecology; social ecology. Data were gathered by means of in-depth interviews with five teachers. To show teachers' beliefs clearly, the analysis of the data was conducted on the basis of 5 categories: 'ecological sensitivity', 'value education', 'behaviors', 'issues', 'perception of a cause of environmental problems, related to social structures'. These belifs reflect deep ecological perspective and social ecology. But these perspectives did not accord with those in programs. Most EE programs included only the deep ecological perspective. They didn't reflect their beliefs that students should perceive the cause of environmental problems in the social structure. The factors which teachers find as inhibiting or supporting their expression of these beliefs were analysed as following: (1) EE requests the change of curriculum and methods of instruction; (2) teachers should acquire 'environmental consciousness' and environmentrelated knowledge; (3) programs requests an administrative and financial support.

For the desirable form of environmental education, 64% supported 'field study or experience activity'. As for the undermining factors, the majority of 50% cited 'excessive focus of school education on college entrance' and 29% 'limitations of class hours'. 3. With regard to their interests in environment and environmental issues, they were between 3.43~4.08 point range out of 5 points. For their sensitivity about the seriousness of environment and environmental problems, the survey showed the range of 3.49~4.28 points out of 5 points. 4. There was no remarkable difference in the level of recognition between male and female teacher. But, according to disparity of age, teachers who are in their forties and fifties recognized better than teachers in twenties and thirties. • The purpose of this study was to make valuable suggestions for improving environmental education(EE) teaching materials. For the purpose of this study, we analyzed four secondary school EE textbooks in the perspective of environmental literacy components. The findings of this study are as follows: (1) As a whole, the EE textbooks tend to focus the understanding environmental knowledge much more than environmental activities. (2) In 'main text' domain of EE textbooks, environmental information, including environmental issue knowledge, is much more focused than environmental attitudes and behavior, including socio-political and environmental issue knowledge. (3) In 'graphic data' domain, environmental information about environmental issue knowledge was most prevalent. (4) Most learning activities focus on 'issue skill' component, rather than 'attitude' and 'action' component. (5) The objectives of EE in the 7th national Curriculum were not explicitly embedded in textbooks and too much is inclined toward 'knowledge' and 'skill'. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop 'module-type' EE textbooks to enable integrative EE. Also, it is suggested to develop specific strategies for linking environmental knowledge and attitude/behavior.

  • The importance of values has been emphasized in the aspect of the cause and solution of environmental problems. It is suggested that educational programs designed to increase environmental concern should be focused on ecocentric values. To do this, it is a prerequisite to understand the level of learners'environmental value. This study measured the level of environmental values of students in secondary schools in Seoul and identified relationship with its variables such as belief, the degree of identification, and environmental experience. We discussed on how to improve the environmental education in the aspects of fostering ecocentric values from the results of this study.
