Safe storage of spent nuclear fuel in deep underground repositories necessitates an understanding of the long-term alteration of metal canisters and buffer materials. A small-scale laboratory alteration test was performed on metal (Cu or Fe) chips embedded in compacted bentonite blocks placed in anaerobic water for 1 year. Lactate, sulfate, and bacteria were separately added to the water to promote biochemical reactions in the system. The bentonite blocks immersed in the water were dismantled after 1 year, showing that their alteration was insignificant. However, the Cu chip exhibited some microscopic etch pits on its surface, wherein a slight sulfur component was detected. Overall, the Fe chip was more corroded than the Cu chip under the same conditions. The secondary phase of the Fe chip was locally found as carbonate materials, such as siderite (FeCO3) and calcite ((Ca, Fe)CO3). These secondary products can imply that the local carbonate occurrence on the Fe chip may be initiated and developed by an evolution (alteration) of bentonite and a diffusive provision of biogenic CO2 gas. These laboratory scale results suggest that the actual long-term alteration of metal canisters/bentonite blocks in the engineered barrier could be possible by microbial activities.
Silicon carbide materials undergo an oxidation reaction in a high-temperature oxidizing environment and show different characteristics depending on the test temperature and time. In particular, the added oxides form a secondary phase within the sintering process and exhibit different oxidation characteristics depending on the added sintering materials. Therefore, to evaluate the oxidation characteristics, the weight of the test piece and the thickness of the oxidation layer were observed, and the structure and oxidation characteristics of the material were analyzed using SEM. SEM observation showed that an oxide layer was formed on the surface of the liquid sintered silicon carbide material after it was oxidized at 1200 ℃, 1300 ℃, and 1400 ℃ for 10 hours, respectively. Then, a bending test was performed at each temperature on the test piece with the oxidation layer formed to evaluate the change in flexural strength. The strength was 466.6 MPa at 1200 ℃, 363.1 MPa at 1300 ℃, and 350.8 MPa at 1400 ℃. Al2O3-SiO2 oxidized at 1200 ℃ for 10 hours showed an increase in strength of about 21.0 MPa compared to the data before the oxidation test.
Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) structures of the $LiCoO_2$ electrode materials for Li secondary batteries were fabricated by using the close-packed arrays of PMMA spheres served as templates. In order to successfully fabricate the cathode materials with highly ordered array form, the metal citrates were applied to new precursors. The precursor/template composites were prepared by the infiltration with metal citrate precursors into the voids of template. By removing the PMMA templates, then, the inverse opal structures with the uniform pores of narrow size distribution were resulted. It was confirmed that the 3DOM $LiCoO_2$ material is to take a single phase of rocksalt (R3m) structure. In addition, 3DOM $LiNiO_2$ and $LiMn_{2}O_4$ cathode materials were fabricated using an identical preparation procedure. Also, the morphology of the 3DOM cathode materials calcined at $500^{\circ}C\;to\;700^{\circ}C$ was observed by scanning electron microscope.
In the Linford group at Brigham Young University we have recently developed three new sets of materials for three different areas of separations science: thin layer chromatography (TLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and solid phase microextraction (SPME). First, via microfabrication we have grown patterned carbon nanotube (CNT) forests on planar substrates that we have infiltrated with inorganic materials such as silicon nitride. The coatings on the CNTs are conformal and typically deposited in a process like low pressure chemical vapor deposition. The resulting materials have high surface areas, are porous, and function as effective separation devices, where separations on our new TLC plates are typically significantly faster than on conventional devices. Second, we used the layer-by-layer (electrostatically driven) deposition of poly (allylamine) and nanodiamond onto carbonized poly (divinylbenzene) microspheres to create superficially porous particles for HPLC. Many interesting classes of molecules have been separated with these particles, including various cannabinoids, pesticides, tricyclic antidepressants, etc. Third, we have developed new materials for SPME by sputtering silicon onto cylindrical fiber substrates in a way that creates shadowing of the incoming flux so that materials with high porosity are obtained. These materials are currently outperforming their commercial counterparts. Throughout this work, the new materials we have made have been characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, etc.
The development of next-generation secondary batteries, including lithium-ion batteries (LIB), requires performance enhancements such as high energy/high power density, low cost, long life, and excellent safety. The discovery of new materials with such requirements is a challenging and time-consuming process with great difficulty. To pursue this challenging endeavor, it is pivotal to understand the structure and interface of electrode materials in a multiscale level at the atomic, molecular, macro-scale during charging / discharging. In this regard, various advanced material characterization tools, including the first-principle calculation, high-resolution electron microscopy, and synchrotron-based X-ray techniques, have been actively employed to understand the charge storage- and degradation-mechanisms of various electrode materials. In this article, we introduce and review recent advances in in-situ synchrotron-based x-ray techniques to study electrode materials for LIBs during thermal degradation and charging/discharging. We show that the fundamental understanding of the structure and interface of the battery materials gained through these advanced in-situ investigations provides valuable insight into designing next-generation electrode materials with significantly improved performance in terms of high energy/high power density, low cost, long life, and excellent safety.
We investigated the additional (secondary) cooling effect of casted strips on the magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets. The Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets were fabricated with the casted strips prepared without and with additional cooling. Additional cooling was achieved by blowing Ar gas at various pressures (0.1, 0.3, and 0.6 MPa) on the free-side surface of the strips during the strip-casting process. The higher magnetic properties of $H_c$, $B_r$, and $(BH)_{max}$ of the final Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets were obtained for 0.1 MPa rather than for 0.0 MPa. The best microstructure of the columnar grains in the casted strips was produced with the aid of a lower pressure of gas on the free-side surface. It was found that the microstructure of the strips affects the distribution of grains grown in the sintered magnets. This report demonstrates that the improved magnetic performance of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets was achieved via additional gas cooling.
The sintering behavior of $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ with the addition of one and three weight % of $CuWO_4$ as a liquid phase sintering aid is studied. Samples are sintered in the temperature range $900-1250^{\circ}C$ and the effect of $CuWO_4$ addition on density, microstructure, phase composition and magnetic properties is examined. Compared to $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ with no sintering aid addition, addition of 1 wt % $CuWO_4$ retards densification. Addition of 3 wt % $CuWO_4$ promotes densification at lower sintering temperatures but retards densification at temperatures > $1050^{\circ}C$. Three wt % $CuWO_4$ addition induces the formation of $BaWO_4$ and $Ba_3WFe_2O_9$ secondary phases at temperatures ${\geq}1100^{\circ}C$. Addition of $CuWO_4$ causes a decrease in saturation magnetization, remanent magnetization and coercivity.
Hydrogen is considered a potential future energy source. Among other applications of hydrogen, hydrogen-rich water is emerging as a new health care product in industrial areas. Water electrolysis is typically used to generate a hydrogen rich water system. We annealed 10AA carbon paper in air to use it as an electrode of a hydrogen rich water generator. Driven by annealing, structural changes of the carbon paper were identified by secondary electron microscope analysis. Depending on the various annealing temperatures, changes of the hydrophilic characteristics were demonstrated. The crystal structures of pristine and heat-treated carbon paper were characterized by X-ray diffraction. Improvement of the efficiency of the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction was measured via linear voltammetry. The optimized annealing temperature of 10AA carbon paper showed the possibility of using this material as an effective hydrogen rich water generator.
