The algae biomass is considered as one of the potential sources of ocean renewable energy because it can be easily mass-produced with abundant sunshine in the vast ocean space. However, the practical use of the biomass has been hindered by the lack of efficient and cost-effective harvesting and maintenance system so far. The algae biomass aquaculture systems are installed in far offshore locations in much larger scales compared to the conventional aquaculture systems so that the automatic seaweed planting and harvesting system needs to operate in heavy sea conditions in far offshore location. In this research, we develop a concept design of a mega-scaled aquaculture system and an automatic seaweed planting and harvesting system, which can operate in heavy seas and mass-produce the algae biomass.

Nine species of edible seaweed [green laver (Monostroma nitidium) and sea staghorn ( Codium fragile) of green algae; sea mustard (Undaria pinnatifida), seaweed fusiforme(Hizikia fusiforme), gulf weed (Sargassum fulvellium), and sea tangle (Laminaria japonica) of brown algae; seaweed dilatata (Halimeniopsis dilatata), seaweed furcata (Gloiopeltis furcata), and laver (Porphyra tenera) of red algae] collected from Kijang, Chungmu, and Yosu in Korea, were examined and compared on their chemical and mineral composition depending on their harvesting season. Crude protein $(N\pm6.25)$ showed about $45\%$ on moisture free basis (the contents of every components described below are shown as moisture free basis) for laver and $30\%$ for green laver collected from ever seasons and sites. Sea tangle showed the highest content in crude lipid $(10\%)$ among brown seaweeds and green laver had $6\%$ of crude lipid regardless their habitats. Ash and carbohydrate in sea staghorn hold about $90\%$ of total solids but those levels were only $50\%$ in laver. The relationship between ash and carbohydrate content showed a tendency with reverse correlation. Mineral compositions were examined on green laver, sea mustard, and seaweed furcata collected from Kijang. Sodium was eminent element (1,798-7,334mg/l00g) followed by potassium. Magnesium and calcium content were low level compared with sodium and potassium. As a micro-element iron was appraised the highest status (165-330mg/100g) in green laver, however, iron in sea mustard and seaweed furcata was comparatively low amount (2.7-47.4mg/100g). The level of zinc was also comparatively high and that was varied on habitats. In conclusion, chemical compositions of these algae were distinctively varied on species and habitats, and mineral compositions were notably changed by the harvesting season.

Electricity generation using fossil fuels has caused environmental pollution. To solve this problem, research on new renewable energy sources (solar, wind power, geothermal heat, etc.) to replace fossil fuels is ongoing. These devices are able to generate power consistently. However, they have many weaknesses, such as high installation costs and limits to possible setup environments. Therefore, an active study on piezoelectric harvesting technology that is able to surmount the limitations of existing energy technologies is underway. Piezoelectric harvesting technology uses the piezoelectric effect, which occurs in crystals that generate voltage when stress is applied. Therefore, it has advantages, such as a wider installation base and lower technological costs. In this study, a piezoelectric harvesting device imitating seaweed, which has a consistent motion caused by fluid, is used. Thus, it can regenerate electricity at sea or on a bridge pillar, which has a constant turbulent flow. The components of the device include circuitry, springs, an electric generator, and balancing and buoyancy elements. Additionally, multiphysics analysis coupled with fluid, structure, and piezoelectric elements is conducted using COMSOL Multiphysics to evaluate performance. Through this program, displacement and electric power were analyzed, and the actual performance was confirmed by the experiment.

In North-East asian countries, laver cultivation has been an important marine industry in coastal areas as well as fishery because laver (Porphyra) is nutrient-rich food and has been used in many Asian cuisines. Laver is characterized by high concentrations of fiber and minerals, a low fat content, and, in some cases, relatively high protein levels. In this paper we inplimented design of fully automatic laver harvesting, nowdays most peoples are used to collect a laver harvesting by human, it is very defficult working, due to wind, waves, and the weather conditions which is hard to stand on the ship and holding the seaweed nets it can be injurced human, this is the reason to we are developed automatic harvesting method, in this project we proposed automatic harvesting collect method which is operated without human. Mainly we design and developed automated ship, This ship is devided in to three parts frist part is supporting roller, second part is drum screener, thried part is lifting mechanism. Thise are operated with hydro pnumatic equimpment, this divice are control with micro controller. The system prototype has implemented and satisfied by the performance to realize the further level.

Abalone containing phlorotannins is produced by feeding the phlorotannin-rich brown seaweed Eisenia bicyclis after 4 days of starvation. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) was used to isolate and quantify phlorotannins, which were identified by mass spectrometry and [$^1H$]-nuclear magnetic resonance to be the P1 compound, 7-phloroeckol, and eckol. When E. bicyclis was used as feed, P1 compound accumulated to an average of 1.60 mg/g dry weight of abalone muscle tissue after 18 d, 7-phloroeckolol to 0.21 mg/g after 16 d, and eckol to 0.22 mg/g after 12 d. Saccharina japonica was used as a control feed, and the abalone showed little or no accumulation of phlorotannins in muscle tissue. Feed consumption and growth rate were very similar when either E. bicyclis or S. japonica was fed for 20 d. Half-maximal reductions in the levels of P1 compound, 7-phloroeckol, and eckol accumulation were attained in 1.5, 1.9, and 3.4 days, respectively, after the feed was switched from E. bicyclis to S. japonica. Value-added abalone containing bioactive phlorotannins can be produced by simply changing the feed to the phlorotannin-rich E. bicyclis 18 d prior to harvesting.

This study developed and evaluated a load cell-based automatic weighing system for the automated harvesting of laver (Porphyra tenera) in seaweed aquaculture. The current manual harvesting process was compared with the load cell-based automated system, and quantitative measurements of time, distance, and weight were conducted. The results demonstrated that the load cell-based system reduced the unloading time and increased the throughput compared to the manual method. In addition, statistical analysis confirmed that there was no significant difference from the mean in the weight measurement obtained using the load cell-based system. Based on these findings, the load cell-based automatic weighing system holds potential for efficient production and transactions in laver cultivation, contributing to cost reduction and improving the quality of life for aquaculture workers.

This report described on the soluble, insoluble, and total dietary fiber level depending on the harvesting seasons and habitats in 9 species of marine algae. Total dietary fiber contents were comprised $25.4-38.1\%$ (dry basis) in green laver and $35.4-43.8\%$in sea staghorn of green algae, $34.2-48.8\%$ in sea mustard, $37.5-47.8\%$ in seaweed fusiforme, $42.9-71.3\%$ in gulf weed, and $37.1-45.1\%$ in sea tangle of brown algae, and $31.3-40.5\%$ in laver, $51.5-60.4\%$ in seaweed dilatata, and $57.1-65.8\%$ in seaweed furcata of red algae. Relatively high levels of both soluble and insoluble dietary fibers were found in seaweed furcata and gulf weed. The ratio of soluble dietary fiber to total dietary fiber was the highest in green laver $(43.7-64.8\%)$, sea mustard $(17.5-31.3\%)$, and seaweed furcata $(44.7-63.2\%)$ in their respective groups. The highest level of algal polysaccharides was confirmed to be an alkali-soluble alginic acid $(9.0-15.1\%)$ in whole brown algae, porphyran$(5.8\%)$ in laver, agar $(20.0\%)$ in seaweed furcata, and carrageenan $(23.8\%)$ in seaweed dilatata of red algae.

Uronate compositions and molecular weights of alginates from the four kinds of brown algae, sea mustard (Undaria pinnatifida), sea tangle (Laminaria japonica), gulf weed (Sargassum fulvellum), and seaweed fusiforme (Hizikia fusiforme), in regard with the harvesting season were investigated. Sea mustard contained the highest amount of alginates in the four kinds of brown algae. D-Mannuronic acid to L-guluronic acid (M/C) ratio of the alginates was high in order of seaweed fusiforme, gulf weed, sea mustard, and sea tangle, and especially in water-soluble alginate. Molecular weights of the alginates were greater with the growing period ranging in $4,500\~4,800\;kDa$ for sea tangle, $4,000\~4,200\;kDa$ for sea mustard, $3,300\~3,400\;kDa$ for seaweed fusiforme, and $3,000\~3,200\;kDa$ for gulfweed. In water-soluble alginate of sea mustard, M/G ratio was much higher in sporophyll than in midrib and blade.

In order to understand the contribution of seaweed aquaculture to nutrients and carbon cycles in coastal environments, we measured the nutrients & carbon uptake rates of Porphyra yezoensis Ueda sampled at Nakdong-River Estuary using a chamber incubation method from November 2011 to April 2012. It was observed that the production rate of dissolved oxygen by P. yezoensis (n=30~40) was about $68.8{\pm}46.0{\mu}mol\;{g_{FW}}^{-1}h^{-1}$ and uptake rate of nitrate, phosphate and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was found to be $2.5{\pm}1.8{\mu}mol\;{g_{FW}}^{-1}h^{-1}$, $0.18{\pm}0.11{\mu}mol\;{g_{FW}}^{-1}h^{-1}$ and $87.1{\pm}57.3{\mu}mol\;{g_{FW}}^{-1}h^{-1}$, respectively. There was a positive linear correlation existed between the production rate of dissolved oxygen and the consumption rates of nitrate, phosphate and DIC, respectively, suggesting that these factors may serve as good indicators of P. yezoensis photosynthesis. Further, there was a negative logarithmic relationship between fresh weight of thallus and uptake rates of nutrients and $CO_2$, which suggested that younger specimens (0.1~0.3 g) were much more efficient at nutrients and $CO_2$ uptake than old specimens. It means that the early culturing stage than harvesting season might have more possibilities to be developed chlorosis by high rates of nitrogen uptake. However, N & C demanding rates of Busan and Jeollabuk-do, calculated by monthly mass production and culturing area, were much higher than those of Jeollanam-do, the highest harvesting area in Korea. Chlorosis events at Jeollabuk-do recently might have developed by the reason that heavily culture in narrow area and insufficient nutrients in maximum yield season (Dec.~Jan.) due mostly to shortage of land discharge and weak water circulation. The annual DIC uptake by P. yezoensis in Nakdong-River Estuary was estimated about $5.6{\times}10^3\;CO_2$ ton, which was about 0.03% of annual carbon dioxide emission of Busan City. Taken together, we suggest more research would be helpful to gain deep insight to evaluate the roles of seaweed aquaculture to the coastal nutrients cycles and global carbon cycle.

Population ecology of Palmaria palmata is described from the intertidal zone of Digby Neck and adjacent islands of Nova Scotia. The primary objectives were: to evaluate the difference in habitat specialization and population structure of P. palmata between harvest and non-harvest shores, and to characterize differences in thallus structure and frond sizes between epilithic and epiphytic populations. Harvest shores were gently sloping boulder fields with boulders typically about 0.5-1.0 m with dense cover of P. palmata on many of the rocks. Non-harvest shores (with or without P. palmata) consisted of boulders that were smaller or larger than harvest shores, or bedrock; when P. palmata was present on nonharvest sites it was typically epiphytic on other algae (e.g., Fucus spp., Mastocarpus stellatus, Devaleraea ramentacea). Harvestable epiphytic populations occurred only in high current areas. While there was little difference in average cover of P. palmata harvest and non-harvest shores ($31.2{\pm}13.7%$ vs. $19.4{\pm}7.3%$, mean ${\pm}$ standard deviation [SD]), the cover of P. palmata on harvest shores was highly skewed such that individual boulders often had >90% cover while adjacent rocks had little. Frond length of large fronds was greater on harvested shores, and mean frond density ($g\;m^{-2}$) was three times higher than the mean density on the non-harvested shores. Frond lengths of entire epiphytic and epilithic frond complements of 119 thalli from harvest beaches showed no difference in mean size of the largest fronds, and no difference in frond number per holdfast when epiphytic and epilithic thalli were compared.
