Water flow in unsaturated soils is affected by two mathematical equations called soil water-characteristic curve and permeability-suction relationship. Soil water-characteristic curve is an equation showing volumetric water content-suction relationship. Many researchers have presented equations for the relationships. This paper illustrates the importance of correctly determining the two relationships when analyzing unsaturated water flows. Results from two methods, Gardner (1958) and Fredlund et al. (1994), are used for comparison purposes. Numerical simulations of water flow by finite element method are performed using the two methods. The results by the numerical simulations are compared with the field data which was obtained from time-domain reflectometry (TDR) probes in Delaware County, Ohio. This data was obtained by the Seasonal Instrumentation Program which is included as a part of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP).

In this research, monoterpene emissions were investigated from pine trees(Pinus densiflora) and in the forest air in Simwon village at the Jiri Mountain. Air samples from an enclosed chamber and pine forest air were collected using a Tenax TA Tube five times a day(at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, and 17:00) on 1 day per month from March to November 2014. Selected needles and branches from individual pine trees were enclosed for the measurement of their monoterpene emissions. The concentration and composition of emitted monoterpenes were analyzed in a time series. The major components of monoterpenes emitted from pine trees were α-pinene, β-myrcene, β-phellandrene, and β-pinene. Seasonal data showed that the concentration of monoterpenes emitted from pine trees began increasing in June and reached its peak in August, decreasing thereafter. In addition, seasonal emissions of monoterpenes were dependent on environmental factors such as temperature. The major species of monoterpenes in forest air were α-pinene, β-pinene, and camphene. The concentration of monoterpenes in forest air began rising from March to April and reached its peak in May; multiple peaks subsequently formed in July and November. Diurnal variation in monoterpenes decreased from 09:00-10:00, reaching a low and high at 13:00-14:00 and 17:00-18:00, respectively.

Particle fluxes were measured by using time-series sediment traps in the Bransfield Strait from December 27th, 1999 to December 26th, 2000. Total mass fluxes showed distinct seasonal variations with high fluxes in the austral summer and low fluxes in the austral winter at a 678m water depth in the eastern Bransfield Strait, while they were high only in January and fairly low in other months at a 960m water depth in the central Bransfield Strait. The reason that total mass fluxes occurred only in January at a 960m water depth in the central Bransfield Strait seems to be the strong current in the surface waters, which leads to a substantial amount of terrestrial materials and locally produced organic matter being advected away from the mooring site. Total mass fluxes were very high from January to October at a 1678m water depth in the eastern Bransfield Strait, while they were high only in January and February at a 1860m water depth in the central Bransfield Strait. The fact that total mass fluxes were higher at the deep water in the both sites than at the intermediate water depth may reflect that a substantial amount of terrestrial and organic materials are laterally transported by strong tidal current from the shallow environments to the deep basins.

Concrete-Face Rock-Fill Dams (CFRDs) are rock-fill dams with watertight-concrete slabs on its upstream slope instead of its central earth cores. The design for CFRDs are still largely empirical and typically based on past experiences. This paper presents a description of the concrete face slabs and leakage behaviors of two post-constructed CFRDs based on the data gathered through instrumentation during the initial impoundment. The results show that the strain on the concrete face slab and the horizontal displacements of the vertical slab joints are slightly affected by both the seasonal temperature change and water loading during the initial impoundment. The deformation of perimetric joints are less affected by the temperature change, however it is significantly affected by the water loading during the initial impoundment. The leakage rate is significantly affected by the hydrostatic load and the deformation of the perimetric joints.

Sediment trap samples were collected to find out characteristic behaviors of metals in the settling particles by using time-series sediment traps at 678m and 1678m water depths in the Bransfield Strait from December 27th, 1999 to December 26th, 2000. Total mass fluxes at the intermediate water depth (678m water depth) were high in the austral summer and low in the austral winter, whereas at the deep water depth (1678m water depth) they showed high values in both the summer and winter. Total mass fluxes were generally higher in the deep water depth than in the intermediate water depth, which indicates that a substantial amount of sediments are laterally transported by strong currents into the deep basin from the shallow water depths. Aluminium contents also showed large seasonal variations with high values in the winter and low values in the summer. On the contrary, organic carbon contents were high in the summer and low in the winter. Al contents were negatively correlated with organic carbon contents, which may be ascribed that detrital particles are diluted by organic matter produced by phytoplankton in the surface waters. Metals measured in this study exhibited three characteristic behaviors; 1) a positive correlation with Al-Ti, Fe, Mn, V, Co, and Ba, 2) a negative correlation with Al-Cd and Zn, 3) no relationship with Al-Sr, Cu, Cr, Ni. Terrestrial materials may act as a major source fer metals that are positively correlated with Al, and organic matter may be a major source for metals that are negatively correlated with Al. Enrichment factor (EF) of Fe, Mn, Ba, Vi Co, Sr, Cr, and Ni ranged from 0.5 to 1.5, whereas EF of Zn, Cu, and Cd showed much higher values than 1.

In order to examine the differences in antioxidant enzyme activities which represent defence mechanism to stressful environments, and soil properties between healthy and declining (or unhealthy) trees, we selected three sites, Witseorum, Youngsil and Sungpanak (Jindallebat). Antioxidant enzymes including Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and Glutathione Reductase (GR), forest soil properties including soil texture, soil pH, organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphate, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable cation content and nutrient contents in leaves of Abies koreana (Korean fir) trees were analyzed. There were no significant differences between healthy and declining trees in GR activity. However, seasonal difference in antioxidant enzyme activity was observed. GR activity was lower in June and August than that of September. Soil chemical and physical properties of each site showed a tendency that organic content, total nitrogen content, available phosphorus, cation exchange capacity and cation content were lower at the site of declining trees than the site of healthy trees.

We investigated seasonal photosynthetic capacity and water use efficiency changes of Korean fir (Abies koreana Wils.) trees located at three sites around the peak of Mt. Halla, Witseorum, Youngsil and Jindallebat. At each sites, we chose healthy and declining individuals to examine the differences of physiological characteristics between them. Net photosynthetic capacity in $15^{\circ}C$ were lower than those of $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. The difference of net photosynthetic capacity between healthy and damaged trees was clear in June and August but damaged trees recovered with passing of the time. There was no difference between healthy and damaged trees in September on photosynthetic rate. Generally, water use efficiency (WUE) of damaged trees was higher than healthy trees.
In this study, the effect of temperature and soil confining stress on geosyntheic stress-strain properties was quantified by performing the temperature dependent confined tension tests for four types of geosynthetic including woven geotextile, composite, geomembrane and geogrid specimen. Temperature instrumentation on the GRS-retaining wall constructed in Jaechon-shi area was also performed to examine the a seasonal temperature variation of geosynthetic reinforcements in the backfill. Based on the test results, a comparison was made between unconfined and confined moduli far each temperature to quantify the soil confinement and temperature effect on stress-strain properties. And it was also proposed that the simple expressions for the secant moduli of geosynthetics as a function of temperature and confining stress on geosynthetics. As a result of the FDM analysis of GRS-retaining wall, the method of considering the effect of temperature and confining stress on geosynthetic reinforcements when performing the FDM analysis of GRS-retaining wall was proposed.

Jagyeokru, an automatic striking water clock described in the Sejong Sillok (Veritable Records of King Sejong) is essentially composed of a water quantity control device and a time-signal device, with the former controlling the amount or the flow rate of water and the latter automatically informing the time based on the former. What connects these two parts is a signal generating device or a power transmission device called the 'Jujeon' system, which includes a copper rod on the float and ball-racked scheduled plates. The copper products excavated under Gongpyeong-dong in Seoul include a lot of broken plate pieces and cylinder-like devices. If some plate pieces are put together, a large square plate with circular holes located in a zigzag can be completed, and at the upper right of it is carved 'the first scheduled plate (一箭).' Cylinder-like devices generally 3.8 cm in diameter are able to release a ball, and have a ginkgo leaf-like screen fixed on the inner axis and a bird-shaped hook of which the leg fixes another axis and the beak attaches to the leaf side. The lateral view of this cylinder-like device appears like a trapezoid and mounts an iron ball. The function of releasing a ball agrees with the description of Borugak Pavilion, where Jagyeokru was installed, written by Kim Don (1385 ~ 1440). The other accounts of Borugak Pavilion's and Heumgyeonggak Pavilion's water clocks describe these copper plates and ball releasing devices as the 'Jujeon' system. According to the description of Borugak Pavilion, a square wooden column has copper plates on the left and right sides the same height as the column, and the left copper plate has 12 drilled holes to keep the time of a 12 double-hours. Meanwhile, the right plate has 25 holes which represent seasonal night 5-hours (Kyeong) and their 5-subhours (Jeom), not 12 hours. There are 11 scheduled plates for seasonal night 5-hours made with copper, which are made to be attached or detached as the season. In accordance with Nujutongui (manual for the operation of the yardstick for the clepsydra), the first scheduled plate for the night is used from the winter solstice (冬至) to 2 days after Daehan (大寒), and from 4 days before Soseol (小雪) to a day before the winter solstice. Besides the first scheduled plate, we confirm discovering a third scheduled plate and a sixth scheduled plate among the excavated copper materials based on the spacing between holes. On the other hand, the width of the scheduled plate is different for these artifacts, measured as 144 mm compared to the description of the Borugak Pavilion, which is recorded as 51 mm. From this perspective, they may be the scheduled plates for the Heumgyeonggak Ongru made in 1438 (or 1554) or for the new Fortress Pavilion installed in Changdeokgung palace completed in 1536 (the 31st year of the reign of King Jungjong) in the early Joseon dynasty. This study presents the concept of the scheduled plates described in the literature, including their new operating mechanism. In addition, a detailed model of 11 scheduled plates is designed from the records and on the excavated relics. It is expected that this study will aid in efforts to restore and reconstruct the automatic water clocks of the early Joseon dynasty.
