  • Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of fish assemblage in the coastal waters off Gori were determined using monthly samples collected by a three-side fyke net in 2006. Of a total of 59 fishes collected, the dominant species were Trachurus japonicus, Mugil cephaIus, Konosirus punctatus, Apogon lineatus, Chelidonichthys spinosus, Ditrema temmincki, Sebastes schlegeli and Apogon semilineatus. These 8 fishes accounted for 92.7% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of fish species, number of individuals, biomass and species diversity indices fluctuated with the seasons. The peak number of fishes occurred in December, whereas biomass of fishes was the highest in March. The number and biomass of fishes were lower in January corresponded with the low temperatures, and the diversity indices were lower in December than in any other month.

  • We investigated seasonal changes in the mesozooplankton community structure in November 2006 and February, May, and August 2007 at 12 stations in the semi-enclosed Muan Bay, Korea. Forty taxa were sampled, with an average abundance ranging from 1,459 to 20,078 indiv. $m^{-3}$; the highest abundance was detected in August 2007, and the lowest in February 2007. Acartia omorii, A. hudsonica, A. ohtsukai, Bestiolina coreana, Calanopia sp., Paracalanus parvus s. l., Cirripedia larvae, Decapoda larvae, and Gastropoda larvae were the most abundant taxa detected. The species diversity of the mesozooplankton was high around the inner regions in August 2007 but it was relatively low in November 2006. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) revealed significant differences in the structure of mesozooplankton community among the seasons. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), performed to examine the relationships among dominant taxa, stations, and environmental variables, showed that most species of copepods were positively correlated with temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a, and COD concentration. Our results suggested that the mesozooplankton community structure observed in this study might be affected partly by the seasonal changes in environmental variables, such as the status of the sluice gates (i.e., open or closed) and the in situ production of resting eggs by major copepods.

  • Seasonal fluctuations in density of mosquito species were investigated at two cow sheds near to a large, reedy marsh with fairly polluted brackish water near the coast of Yongam-ri, Cheongryang-myon, Ulsan, Korea. Female mosquitoes were collected biweekly using Nozawa light traps from March to September, from 1999 to 2001. On average, 4,416.1, 5,505.9 and 6,863.8 females per trap night were collected from 10 species in 5 genera in 1999, 2000 and 2001, respectively. Among them, An. sinensis was most abundant (53.4% in species ratio), followed by Cx. tritaeniorhynchus (43.0%), Cx. inatomii (1.6%), Ochlerotatus dorsalis (1.3%) and Cx. pipiens pallens (0.5%). A malaria vector, An. sinensis and a Japanese encephalitis vector, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus were collected 3,663.3 females and 3,142.5 females per trap night from June to September for the years, respectively. According to the biweekly population changes at the area, Cx. inatomii which was dominant species in 1997, was the most abundant in the early July during 1999-2001.

  • Seasonal variation of the infection by three species of symbiotic copepods in clam, Tresus keenae was investigated in south coast of Korea. The prevalence and abundance of three symbiotic copepods showed seasonal variation with a peak in winter. Reproduction of the copepods occurs from early autumn to spring as indicated by higher ratio of gravid copepods. The frequency distribution of Lichomolgus inflatus, Pseudomyicola spinosus and Anthessius progectus in their host population could be fitted with negative binominal distribution. Results from the present study suggest that seasonal fluctuation in prevalence, relative density and mean intensity is related to temperature and life history of the symbiotic copepods.

  • The seasonal distribution and abundance of larval fishes in the central and southern surface waters of the East Sea were investigated seasonally during 2011 and 2012. During the study period, the larvae of 39 species belonging to 26 families were collected. The most abundant species were Engraulisjaponicus, which accounted for 97.5% of the total number of individuals collected. Scomber japonicus, Clupea pallasii, Chromis notatus, Cottidae sp., and Coryphaena hippurus accounted for 1.7% of the total. The number of species, number of individuals, and species diversity indices fluctuated with the season. The peak number of species and individuals occurred in September and May, respectively. The larvae of the main species displayed a distinct spatial distribution and seasonal occurrence patterns. E. japonicus and C. notatus widely distributed throughout the study area. During summer and autumn, S. japonicus and C. hippurus were abundant in southern and offshore regions. C. pallasii occurred only in the southern region during winter. The seasonal occurrence and patterns of distribution of the larvae of main species seems were correlated with surface water temperature.

  • Phlorotannins are common metabolites produced in kelps that can have deterrent functions against grazers. The factors dictating seasonal patterns of phlorotannin content in northeastern Pacific kelps are not well understood. This study assessed density and grazing of the gastropod Lacuna vincta on the annual canopy-forming kelp Nereocystis luetkeana and the perennial understory species Agarum clathratum, Saccharina latissima and S. groenlandica in Kachemak Bay, Alaska. In addition, we assessed seasonal patterns of environmental variables as possible drivers of phlorotannin concentrations. Phlorotannins occurred in all species, with overall lowest levels in N. luetkeana, and with different seasonal patterns among the four species. Lacuna vincta was most dense on N. luetkeana thalli in the summer and had highest grazing rates on this low-phlorotannin species. However, correlations between L. vincta density and phlorotannin content of each kelp species were not significant. Except for N. luetkeana, there were no correlations between phlorotannin levels and environmental variables. We suggest that kelp life history traits may be more important for phlorotannin patterns in these kelp species than grazers or environmental drivers.

  • Seasonal variation of the fishery resource in the shallow waters of Ganghwado tidal flat was investigated using monthly collected samples with a fence net from June 1998 to May 1999. Thirty-six species were found including 27 fish species, 6 crustaceans, and 3 molluscs. Of the fish, Konosirus punctatus, Sardinella zunasi Liza haematocheila and Synechogobius hasta dominated in the number of individuals $(92.1\%)$ and in biomass $(94.5\%).$ A few number of resident species, such as L. haematocheila and S. hasta, were collected only during the cold months. As the water temperature increased in the spring, the adult migratory fish such as K. punctatus and S. zunasi, were collected. In the summer, the juvenile fish recruited in the shallow water showing a peak in fish abundance. The data suggested that they grew until late autumn before moving to deeper waters for over-wintering. The principal component analysis showed that the seasonal variation in species composition was principally determined by water temperature and/or water temperature related factors. The species composition of the fish assemblage in the study area suggested that these species are highly adapted to extreme seasonal temperature variation and high water turbidity.

  • About three fourths of total variability of zooplankton in Asan Bay was associated with season and the difference between inner bay and outer bay was relatively small. However, the differences in percent compositions of major taxa at inner bay and outer bay increased gradually with time, suggesting the change of ecosystem in this bay due to the human exploitation such as reclamation. Seasons of maximum abundances were different among the taxa but consistent for each taxon throughout the three survey years. Calanus sinicus and Acartia bifilosa showed maximum abundance in spring. Sagitta crassa, Paracalanus parvus, A. pacifica, Tortanus spinicaudatus, Corycaeus affinis and Decapoda larva were most abundant in summer. Labidocera euchaeta and Bivalve larva appeared most abundantly in fall. But in winter no taxon showed maximum. In general, low abundance with many species in fall, low abundance and few taxa in winter, increase in both number of taxa and abundance in spring, and high abundance and many taxa in summer were observed. A hypothesis for the observed patterns was suggested although more evidences were needed to support this.

  • In order to investigate the distribution of phytoplankton community in the coastal waters of the Chuksan Harbor, East Sea, the abundance and biomass of phytoplankton have been evaluated through seasonal interval sampling from April 2000 to October 2002. A total of 363 different phytoplankton species was observed and most of them were composed of diatoms. The mean abundance and chlorophyll-a concentration of phytoplankton during the study period ranged from 56 ${\times}$ $10^3$ to 720 ${\times}$ $10^3$ cells $L^{-1}$ and from 0.78 to 3.29 μg chl-a $L^{-1}$, respectively. The relative contribution of the size-fractionated phytoplankton to phytoplankton community showed difference according to seasons. The average contribution of nano-phytoplankton(<20 $\mu$m) was over 50% in the total abundance and biomass of the phytoplankton. Our results show that nano-phytoplankton play an important role in the southern coastal waters of the East Sea. And the environmental factors such as suspended substances, phosphates and silicates were positively correlated with the abundances and biomass of phytoplankton.
