  • ROV surveys were conducted using 500 meter mini class ROV with HD video camera, 2 LED lights, a simple manipulator and 8 thrusters near the Dokdo and Simheungtaek seamount. Total six dives have been conducted using the ROV "V8 SII" from Sweden and ROV's support ship, "KOSAL V" at 4 stations between 45 and 370 meters with diving time ranged from 30 to 120 minutes. Dense communities of sea anemone (Actinostolidae sp.) and ophiuroids (Ophiuridae sp.) on the surface of rocky bottom and snow crab on the soft bottom with muddy-sand were observed at northwestern part of Simheungtaek seamount. We obtained the following results 1) habitats information for snow crab, one of the major fisheries resources, and deep-sea fauna, 2) observation on the specific topography and sediment conditions, 3) observation of the seabed surface covered with the discarded fishing gears. This study represents the first report of in situ visual observation of deep-sea organisms and their habitats near the Dokdo slopes and flat top of the Simheungtaek seamount in the East Sea. These results indicated that immediate oceanographic survey using the mini class ROV is available in the East Sea.

  • Analysis of high-resolution seismic profiles acquired from the inner shelf off the southern coast of Korea reveals that the inner shelf sequence can be divided into three stratigraphic units formed after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Unit I is characterized by complex seismic facies including semi-transparent, stratified, and hummocky reflections on seismic records. It consists of sandy mud or muddy sand, deposited under estuarine environment during the post-glacial transgression. Unit II acoustically shows semi-transparent or hummocky reflections and consists of sand with gravels and shell debris, produced by shoreface erosion during the transgression. Unit III is characterized by transparent or semi-transparent seismic facies and consists of mud originated from the Nakdong and Seomjin rivers during recent highstand of sea level. Unit III is confined to the inner shelf with an extenal form of stratal wedge.

  • The change of surface sediment composition, shoreline and transection of geography were studied to investigate the Typhoon(Maemi) effect in Naa Beach located in the south area of East sea. In the backshore the volume of gravel is do creased, and increased in the volume of sand. The erosion in the sediment occurred to 4 m in the thickness and effected to 10 m in depth. And the coastline retreated to 12 m after typhoon. During typhoon conditions, higher amplitude waves deepen the wave base, causing much of the lower beach face and the offshore. The upper beach face is extensively eroded during typhoon and sand sediment is redeposited.

  • To understand the geochemical characteristics of intertidal sediment in a semi-enclosed bay, we measured various geochemical parameters, including grain size, ignition loss (IL), chemical oxygen demand (COD), acid volatile sulfide (AVS), and trace metals (Al, Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Hg, and As), in intertidal sediment from three bays (Deukryang Bay, Yeoja Bay, and Gamak Bay) in the southern region of Jeollanam Province. The intertidal sediment in Deukryang Bay consisted of various sedimentary types, such as sand, gravelly muddy sand, mud, and silt, whereas the intertidal sediments in Yeoja and Gamak Bays were composed mainly of mud. The concentrations of IL, COD, AVS and trace metals in the intertidal sediments of the three study regions were relatively high near areas affected by input of stream waters and/or shellfish farming waste. The concentrations of organic matter and trace metals in Gamak Bay were much higher than those in Deukryang and Yeoja Bays, which appears to be due to the influence of anthropogenic pollutants, originating from the city and the industrial complex near Gamak Bay. The evaluation results of organic matter and metal pollution using the sediment quality guidelines showed that the intertidal sediments in the three study regions were not polluted in terms of organic matter and trace metals. In future, sustainable management for sources of organic matter and trace metal is necessary to conserve a healthy benthic ecosystem in intertidal sediments.

  • A new harbor as been constructing in Gadukdo. However, a lot of fugitive dust gas been often generated from construction site reclaiming sea sand, especially when the Northwester is blown strongly. It has resulted insome appeals of residents in Gadukdo. In this study, we estimated the amount of fugitive dust caused by new harbor construction using Fugitive dust formula. Also, the concentration of PM10 for recipient is predicted by AERMOD. The amount of fugitive dust is 26.56 ${\mu}g/sec{\cdot}m^2$ and 11.84 ${\mu}g/sec{\cdot}m^2$ respectively by the Fugitive dust formula. PM10 outlet concentration and the amount of fugitive dust increase according to wind velocity and directions. AERMOD is performed on the basis of weather data and the amount of fugitive dust generated with wind velocity. As a result of AERMOD, the PM10 concentration of Sunchang and Oinul are predicted over 100 ${\mu}g/m^3$. The PM10 concentration of Sunchang and Oinul are predicted over 130 ${\mu}g/m^3$ when wind velocity of northwester in winter is over 11 m/s (Air Quality for Particulate Matter (100 ${\mu}g/m^3$ for 24 hours)). Also, the measured error between AERMOD and actual measurement is lower than 5%.

  • The sand-eel, Ammedytes Personatus is a commercially important fish abounantly found in west and east coast of Korea. Samples were collected from the Baegryeong Island (Yellow Sea), Geoje Island(southern coast) and Jumunjin (East Sea) from May 1973 to December 1974. In this paper the author dealt with some biological point of the fish, especially the relationship between total length ang body weight, and the major spawning season and sex ratio. 1. The major spawning season was confined to the end of November and the end of December at Jumunjin. 2. The sex ratio (male/female) is 0.75 before the main spawning season and increases up to 1.36 after spawning at Jumunjin in 1974. 3. The relationship between the total length (L) and body weight (In were represented as follows: $W=0.0001906L^{3.1998319}$ for the sample from Baegryeong Is. $W=0.0003419L^{3.0213438}$ for the sample from Geoje Is. $W=0.0002655L^{3.1408629}$ for the sample from Jumunjin.

  • Distribution patterns of sandy bottom macrobenthic communities were studied around the Hupo coastal area. The seasonal surveys were conducted at 15 chosen sites within a depth range of 10 to 50 m along 10 km of the coastline using a Smith-McIntyre grab $(0.05\;m^2)$ in 2005. Overall depth distribution following the direction of the offshore become deeper parallel to the coastline. A total of 319 macrobenthic species were sampled with a mean density of $1,972\;ind./m^2$, and mean biomass was 82.5 wet-weight $g/m^2$. The major individual-dominant species were three polychaetes Spiophanes bombyx ($436\;ind./m^2$), Scoletoma longifolia ($250\;ind./m^2$) and Magelona japonica ($170\;ind./m^2$), and bivalve Adontorhina subquadrata ($73\;ind./m^2$). Cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) analysis based on Bray-Curtis similarity identified 2 major station groups which corresponded to macrobenthic faunal assemblages and their characteristic species. In addition, environmental conditions were significantly different between station groups. Group I contained mostly 20 and 50 m deep sites and was associated with sandy mud. Group I was characterized by high abundance of S. bombyx, S. longifolia, A. subquadrata. It was divided into two sub-groups (I-I and I-II) in relation to depth. Sub-group I-I was associated with deeper sites than sub-group I-II. Group II included mostly inshore area shallower than 15 m and was associated with coarse and medium sand. Group II was characterized by Lumbrinerides hayashii and Urothoe grimaldii japonica.

  • The sea flower begins at the water-sediment Interface. In the ocean basins, the sound velocity of the sediments at the interface vary from a few percent less than the sound speed in water just above the interface to somewhat greater. Marine sediments are unconsolidated; that is, the particles are not cemented of fused together. Samples feel like mud, muddy sand, sand, and so on. With the theoretical knowledge, the systematic research on the searching capability of Ultra Sonic Signal will be continued to identify the influence against the sea water subject. In this research, signal will be analyzed according to the influence range, power and sensitiveness of Ultra Sonic Generator. In addition, the radius of Ultra Sonic Signal will be included. The experimental field work will be executed at Nockdong, Pulkyo and other places well known as a habitat of Pan Shell.

  • In this paper, finite element analysis is applied for simulation of cracks due to restraining autogenous and drying shrinkage at early-age concrete. A micro-level heat hydration model and a shrinkage prediction model along with a moisture diffusion model are adopted for the finite element analysis. Then, an axial restraint test is carried out for concrete specimens containing different amounts of chloride ions to evaluate stress development and cracking due to the restraining shrinkages at early ages. Test results show that the increase of contents of chloride ions increases restrained stress, but does not increase strength. By this increase of shrinkage strain at early-age, time to occur the crack is accelerated. Finally, stress development and cracking of concrete specimens containing different amount of chloride ions we simulated using the finite element analysis. Results of the analysis using the Proposed model are verified by comparison with test results.

  • Distribution patterns of the chemical species, contained or dissolved in the sediments and porewater, were studied from the submarine environments around Deok-Jeok Island, Yellow Sea. The sediments in the study area are predominantly composed of medium to coarse sands, and consequently of very low organic carbon (0.003%) -0.26%o dry weight sediments). As opposed to the strong enrichment of porewater with nutrients and heavy metals in the ordinarily muddy, organic-rich sediillents, the porewater enrichment is not intense in this sandy, organic-poor sediments: porewater phosphate is enriched to the maximum of only seven (average two) times over that in the bottom water. Concentrations of the heavy metals dissolved in porewater show a bit greater enrichment than the nutrient: Zn shows the lowest enrichment (7 times that of the bottom water) and Mn the highest (450 times that of the bottom water). However, these enrichments of the chemical species in porewater are the natural consequences of decomposition of the organic matter in sediments, and still fall short in the magnitude of those in the muddy, organic-rich sediments. Mining of the sands in the study area may pose a threat to the seawater quality as it causes a large scale porewater discharge to the bottom water. The additional supply of the nutrients by this discharge may develop an eutrophic state and, in consequence, an excessive nitrification of the water column. Since the residence times of the nutrients are much longer than those of the heavy metals, a long-term monitoring of the concentration changes in the porewater nutrients is very important to assess the potential deterioration of the seawater associated with the sand mining in the study area.
