Dynamic behavior of a scroll compressor has been investigated analytically. The equations of motion of moving elements of the scroll compressor such as the orbiting scroll, anti-rotation device, slider bush, and the crank shaft with eccentric crank pin have been set up. As the solutions of these equations, reaction forces between the moving elements, and also between the moving elements and the compressor frame have been calculated. The reaction forces from the moving elements to the frame are the unbalanced forces, which produce accelerations of the compressor body. These accelerations can be used as a measure of the compressor vibration. The major contributions to the unbalanced forces come from the orbiting movement of the orbiting scroll.

Conceptual design of scroll expander and scroll compressor for 10kW-class Stirling engine utilizing solar energy as heat source has been carried out to estimate the applicability of scroll mechanism for Stirling cycle. CO2 was chosen as working fluid, since it has lower expansion index and higher density among probably usable gases. Gas temperature at the expander inlet was set at $700^{\circ}C$, and that at the compressor inlet was at $40^{\circ}C$. System efficiency reached maximum at the pressure ratio of about 2.5, and the peak efficiency increased with increasing high side pressure. Due to safety concern, the pressure condition of 6 MPa/2.5 MPa was chosen as design condition. Orbiting scroll members for the expander and compressor were designed to have double-sided structure in order to reduce the overall scroll size and to cancel out the axial gas forces acting on the orbiting scroll base plate. By parametric study on the scroll profile, smaller possible size for the scroll members was obtained. With the shaft speed of 3600rpm, the shaft output of the designed scroll expander was calculated to be 45.4kW, while input power for the scroll compressor was 34.5kW, yielding 10.9kW for the output power of the Stirling engine. System efficiency was estimated to be about 7.3%, and overall efficiencies of the scroll expander and compressor were around 84.1% and 88.3%, respectively.

Recently, a scroll compressor is widely used, because a scroll compressor features low noise, due to less pulsation of gas pressure, than that of the rotary compressor. The major source of noise in air-conditioner is a compressor. Therefore, noise reduction in a compressor is quite significant as an element technology in air-conditioner field. For a reduction of noise, the source of noise must be identified. This paper presents detailed analyzes for the major noise source (fluid-borne noise and structure-borne noise) causes in a scroll compressor, which will make possible a low noise and vibration design of a scroll compressor.

A numerical method of calculating the performance of a scroll compressor for refrigerant R-22 and R-134a is presented in this paper. A series of involute curves are employed for the scroll wrap design and the compression volume is investigated geometrically. The radial leakage flow rate through tip clearance is calculated by the two-dimensional compressible flow. On the basis of the results, quasi one-dimensional leakage modeling can be applied to the performance analysis of a scroll compressor, more effectively. Furthermore, the heat transfer effect between scroll wrap and working fluid in compression chamber is considered for the performance analysis. As the results of this study, the effects of the radial and tangential leakage flow rate and heat transfer on the scroll compressor performance are derived precisely. These results may provide the guideline for the design and development of a real scroll compressor.

Thermodynamic modeling of low-pressure scroll compressor was developed by combining continuity and energy conservation equation. Suction gas heating was considered using energy balance inside the low pressure shell. Pressure, temperature and mass of refrigerant-22 as a function of orbiting angle were calculated by solving the governing equations using fourth order Rung-Kutta scheme. Motor efficiency was taken by experiments with a variation of frequency. The developed model was applied to the analysis of an inverter driven scroll compressor with a variation of frequency, pressure ratio and operating conditions. The model was verified with the experimental results at the same operating conditions. The developed model was adequate to predict performance of the inverter driven scroll compressor as a function of operating conditions. Calculated parameters from the model were discharge temperature, mass flow rate, power input, COP, and thermodynamic properties with respect to orbiting angle. To enhance the performance of a scroll compressor, it is essential to diminish leakage at low frequency level and improve the mechanical efficiency at high frequency level.
In the present study, the compression process in scroll compressor was simulated in consideration of flow leakage and heat transfer. Tangential and radial leakages of the refrigerant between the scrolls were considered as nozzle flow. The experiment was first conducted with a scroll compressor for automobile air conditioning system and R134a as a refrigerant. Temperature and pressure were measured at the suction and discharge ports of the compressor to determine the thermodynamic states of the refrigerant flow. Temperature distribution of the scroll with the involute angle was also measured by thermocouples that were installed inside the scroll. Measured temperature distribution was compared with the numerical results. From this result, the thermal effect of mechanical contact was found to be important in heat transfer of the compression process.
The basic elements in a rotary-type scroll compressor are two identical spiral scrolls containing refrigerant gas. The pressure variations in the compression pockets of a scroll compressor change the forces acting on the orbiting scroll, and these forces affect the dynamic behavior of the compression mechanism parts. To achieve high efficiency, using a self-sealing mechanism as a tip seal mechanism is very effective. Tip seals, which are placed on top of the scroll wraps, accomplish thrust sealing. This study calculates the friction force between the tip seal and the side plate of a scroll compressor using the numerical model considered in the Reynolds equation. The calculated friction force is verified by an experiment using a pin-on-disk apparatus. A hydraulic servo valve that controls the pressure of the oil hydraulic cylinder applies the normal load for the test, and a DC servo motor controls the sliding velocity of the disk. The friction force and normal load are measured by the force sensors attached to the supporting parts. The results show that the theoretical and experimental results are similar and that the friction is influenced by the viscosity of the oil and the sliding velocity of the scroll.

Orbiting scroll mass center is different from the basic circle's for the normal involute profile. As for the orbiting scroll balanced conditions, the dynamic modeling are set up. The influences on sealing, reaction forces between the moving elements and forces from the moving elements to the compressor frame are analyzed in this paper. The simulation and experiment results are presented.
This paper introduces a conceptual design of a combined scroll expander-compressor unit for a fuel cell. Since air discharged out of the fuel cell stack has still high pressure energy, some power can be extracted from the air by directing it to pass through an expanding device. Such extracted power can be used to drive an auxiliary compressor. For this purpose, a scroll type expander coupled to a scroll type compressor was designed for a 1kW-class fuel cell. The orbiting scroll members of the expander and the compressor were made to share three of common drive shafts installed in the mid frame plate. Performance analysis for the combined expander-compressor unit showed that the installation of this unit could reduce the auxiliary power consumption in the fuel cell by about 42%.

Numerical simulations for scroll, two-stage twin rotary, and two-cylinder reciprocating compressors have been carried out to understand the effectiveness of each type compressor for heat pump water heater application using $CO_2$ as refrigerant. For suction pressure of 3.5 MPa and discharge pressure of 9 MPa, clearance volume ratio of the reciprocating compressor needs to be about 5% or less to have the volumetric efficiency comparable to that of the scroll compressor with tip clearance of $5\;{\mu}m$. Volumetric efficiency of the scroll compressor is quite sensitive to tip clearance. Adiabatic efficiency of the twin rotary compressor was calculated to be the lowest among the three types, and the most severe drawback of the $CO_2$ scroll compressor was a significant increase in the mechanical loss at the thrust surface supporting the orbiting scroll member. While the scroll compressor showed very smooth torque load variation, peak-to-peak torque variations of the twin rotary and two-cylinder reciprocating compressors were about 50% and 250%, respectively.
