  • The phenomena of local scour due to a current from a seadike closure gap which is protected by rock, then on to an erodible bed, have been studied. Based on the data of hydraulic model test, the scour characteristics have been investigated for the variation of maximum scour depth with time until reaching equilibrium stage and the shape of ultimate scour hole. A brief evaluation of DHL formula for the relationship between maximum scouring depth and time and a dimensionless form leading to time-scale introduced. On the basis of DHL formula, modified DHL formula denoted DHL-RDC formula is extend to the range of estimation of scour depth compared to DHL formula verified by model test.

  • Multi-member lattice-type structures including jackets and tripods are being considered as good alternatives to monopile foundations for relatively deep water of 25-50 m of water depth owing to their technical and economic feasibility. In this study, the reliability analysis of bottom-fixed offshore wind turbines with monopile and/or multi-member lattice-type foundations is carried out and the sensitivities of random variables such as material properties, external wind loadings and scouring depth are compared with respect to different types of foundations. Numerical analysis of the NREL 5 MW wind turbine supported by monopile, tripod and jacket substructures shows that the uncertainties of soil properties affect the reliability index more significantly for the monopile-supported OWTs while the reliability index is not so sensitive to the material properties in the cases of tripod- and jacket-supported OWTs. In conclusion, the reliability analysis can be preliminarily carried out without considering soil-pile-interaction in the cases of tripod- and jacket-supported OWTs while it is very important to use the well-measured soil properties for reliable design of monopile-supported OWTs.

  • Artificial reef often experiences a functional loss due to scour, even though serveral surveys of a seabed were performed prior to installation. Particularly in the east and west coasts in Korea, where the artificial reefs are installed, there are clear differences in the geotechnical characteristics of the seabed. Therefore, in this study, both field surveys and laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the scouring characteristics of artificial reefs installed on the east and west coasts of Korea. The laboratory experiments were performed with different velocities and soil types. The field survey results of artificial reef revealed that artificial reef-installed seabeds in the east and west coasts are more vulnerable to scour than settlement. Particularly in the west coast, the loss ratio caused by scour was found to exceed 50 % in most cases. The experimental results showed that scouring occurred faster and more severely on the west coast seabed, which has a smaller particle size compared to the east coast. Additionally when the scour depth exceeded approximately 10 % of the height of the artificial reef, the artificial reef tilted forward and further scouring was induced.

  • This study investigated settlement and scouring characteristics of artificial reef reinforced with various reinforcement types to reduce settlement and scouring. Three reinforcement types were prepared: geogrid, geogrid-bamboo mat (GBM) and seaweed-pile mat (SPM). Various laboratory tests such as bearing capacity test, large size settlement test, two-dimensional flow scour test were performed according to different soil types (sand, silt, clay). Laboratory test results indicated that bearing capacity of seabed with a reinforced artificial reef increased and its settlement and scour depth reduced for all reinforcement types. Especially, reinforcement effect tends to be greater in clay soft ground rather than sand and silt grounds.

  • A thorough literatural review of researches on the experimental prediction of scour depths caused by jets was carried out to find out a measure of scour prediction. A new experimental equation for predicting scour depths due to a vortical or an inclined jet was developed from five hundreds of experimental data which were carefully reviewed and adopted from the previous researches. The developed equation shows 0.941 statistical correlation coefficient. It was found that the parameters governing the scour depth were the size of bed material, flow rate through unit width of spillway, and head drop across structure. The predicted scour depth could be expressed as the deepest scouring depth below tail water surface with correlation coefficient ${\gamma}$ = 0.941.

  • If scour is occurred at shallow foundation of bridge, seismic performance of the bridge will be reduced. In order to evaluate accurate seismic response of bridge according to scour depths, modeling of foundation reflecting scour effect is important. In this study, taking into account the effect of the reduction in embedment depth of the shallow foundation by scouring, the soil around the foundation is modelled as an equivalent soil spring with various stiffness. Seismic fragility analyses for 3 types of bridges subjected to 4 types of ground motions classified into Site Class A, B, C, D are evaluated according to several scour depths. From the fragility analysis results, it can be observed that the deeper the scour depth, the higher probability of exceeding damage states. Also, seismic failure probability of asymmetric bridge is higher than that of symmetric bridge.

  • Several methods have been proposed to control the sedimentation process. These include catchment management, flushing, sluicing, density current venting, and dredging. Flushing is used to erode previously deposited sediments. In pressurized flushing, the sediment in the vicinity of the outlet openings is scoured and a funnel shaped crater is created. In this study, the effect of localized vibrations in the sediment layers on the dimensions of the flushing cone was investigated experimentally. For this purpose, experiments were carried out with two bottom outlet diameters, five discharge releases for each desired water depth, and one water depth above the center of the bottom outlets. The results indicate that the volume and dimensions of the flushing cone are strongly affected by localized vibrations.

  • In recent years, the occurrence of localized torrential rain has increased due to the increase in heavy rainfall and massive typhoons caused by abnormal weather. As a result, the flow rate of small and medium-sized rivers in Korea is rapidly increasing, affecting the safety of bridges and increasing the risk of scour. However, the domestic bridge construction technology does not reflect the watershed characteristics of domestic rivers because the bridge scour depth calculation formula developed overseas is used to calculate the bridge scour depth. Therefore, this study is a basic study for prevention of bridge damage according to scouring phenomenon, and a comparative analysis was performed between the experimental data measured through hydraulic model test and the scour depth formulas applied in Korea. In addition, the statistical analysis between experimental data and scour depth formula shows that Coleman's (1971) formula estimates the best scour depth. The results of this study are expected to be used to calculate more accurate bridge scour depth in river design and bridge design.

  • This experimental study deals with the mechanism of spoilers that cause scouring around pipelines. The design methodology was applied to spoilers for accelerating pipelines that undergo self-burial into the sand-bed and evaluated using approaching experimental analysis. The experimental study was conducted to investigate the self-burial ability of submarine pipelines with two types of sand-bed models: silt and sand. Spoilers of different heights were attached to the top of the pipeline for each experiment case. The relationship between the relative scour depth and spoiler height was evaluated by applying different flow velocities and sand diameters and comparative analysis was performed with values obtained from similarity experiments and theory. The experimental study will be useful in establishing a database for the design of spoilers.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of levee crest width and the slope steepness on levee break due to overtopping flow. The phenomenon of bank failure can be described in 4 stages. In this study, the magnitudes of breach width, breach depth peak discharge, and scouring shape at the break site were measured, and the result shows that peak discharge will be reduced and breach duration extended by widening the crown width and lessening the levee slope steepness. The breach width was narrower and the breach depth deeper, as the levee crest width become wider or the slope steeper. And, the bed scour depth was deeper and steeper, as the levee crest crest width become narrower or the slope milder.
