  • It is a recent worldwide trend that erosion characteristics of soil, the resistance factor against scour, are quantified and considered in the estimation of scour depths in fine-grained soils. As part of the efforts, local erosion characteristics on fine-grained soils of the West Coast area are analyzed through scour rate experiments, where a lot of sea-crossing long-span bridges are planned and being constructed in recent years. Four sites including Incheon Bridge, Choji Bridge, Hwankyung Bridge, and Janghang area are finally selected for this study and the scour rate tests are performed using 34 undisturbed soil samples from the sites. The critical shear stresses which represent erodibility of the soil tend to be proportional to the undrained shear strength values. The relative ability of cohesive fine-grained soils to resist erosion is assumed to be higher than that of noncohesive soils. Quantified local erosion characteristics of fine-grained soils in the West Coast area are presented in forms of charts showing relationships between scour rates and shear stresses, and suggested as basic data for the estimation of scour depths and design of bridge foundations in the West Coast area.

  • Seismic bridge failure due to the combined effects of earthquake and local scour are examined in probabilistic perspectives. The seismic responses of multi-span continuous bridge with deep foundations are evaluated with a simplified mechanical model. The probabilistic local scour depths around the deep foundations are estimated by using the Monte Carlo simulation. From the simulation results, it is found that seismic responses of a bridge slightly increase due to the local scour effect. The effect of local scour on the global motion of the continuous bridge is found to be significant under weak seismic intensity. In addition, the duration to regain its original foundation stiffness is critical in estimating the probability of foundation failure under earthquake. Therefore, the duration in recovering the foundation stiffness should be determined reasonably and the safely of the whole bridge system should be evaluated by considering the scour effect.

  • This paper deals with the local scour around a pipeline exposed to combined waves and current in the shallow water zone. To investigate the characteristics of the scour around a pipeline on the sea bed, experiments were performed according to the various pipe diameters, wave periods, wave heights, and current velocities. Wave generator and current generator were used for the experiments. Two current directions were used ; co-direction and counter direction to the waves. With the experimental results, the correlations between the scour depths and non-dimensional parameters such as Keulegan-Carpenter number(KC), Froude number(Fr), Ursell number(Ur) and velocity ratio were analysed. The relative scour depths were found obviously to be dominated by the wave component when the velocity ratio function approaches zero and those are gorverned by the current component when the velocity ratio approaches unity. Velocity ratio function was approved to be a proper parameter which is able to express the change of the scour in the combined wave and current zone. Also considering the orbital velocity and the current velocity into Fr numer and KC number respectively, scour depths show more favorable correlationship with the parameters.

  • Scour means the erosion of bed material by flow change when a bridge is constructed in a stream. Scour is one of the critical factors of a bridge failure. There are several methods for the monitoring of scour near bridge foundations; Sounding rods, Magnetic sliding collar System, Sonar system, underwater camera system and so on. In general, Sonar system is preferred due to its convenience and good accuracy. In this study, the new scour monitoring system was developed using profiling sonar sensor. The new system can measure a line profile of a seabed and has small size due to the effectively designed data logger. The performance of the new scour monitoring system was evaluated at a bridge pier in tidal environment. The measured local scour depths were discussed with the result of the empirical formulas; CSU, Froehlich, Laursen and Neill.

  • Bridge piers are sometimes damaged by local scour. Although the problem of local scour around pier has been studied extensively, it has been difficult to estimate local scour deth quantitatively. This study is concerned with local scour around semicylindrical piers arranged in various types under the condition of clear water scour. Through dimensional analysis, it was found that scour depths were relative to Re, Fr, and Ns. In the case of semicylindrical piers, the variation of dimensionless scour depth with dimensionless time (effect of Ns, pier diameter and length, incidence angle) and the variation of scour depth with vortex intensity and resistance are investigated experimentally to obtain a formula. And forula for estimating the maximum depth of scour is obtained.

  • When the pier is constructed in the cohesive be, the accuracy maynot be obtained because the equation for calculating the scour at piers is based upon the results which are analyzed through the experiments in the non-cohesive bed. In this paper, the variation of the depth of the pier scour occurred by constructing 5 types of pier in the channel having the cohesive material is examined. The experimental results are analyzed based upon Froude numbers and non-dimensional numbers which are indicated as the flow depths compared to the pier width. The results are also compared with the results obtained using the existing pier scour equations. In this paper, the shape factors, which can be used for calculating the scour depth of the pier in the cohesive channel bed, are suggested. The shape factors are indicated through the ratios between the scour depth at the circular pier and the scour depths at the different types of pier, and are suggested as two stages. In the first stage, in which the water depth compared to the pier width is less than 1.2, the shape factors are given as the equations. However, in the second stage the shape factors are given as the constant values. It is understood that the shape factors suggested in this paper can be properly usd for calculating local scour at piers in the bridges which are constructed in the cohesive channel bed having the characteristics of the bed material which is used in these experiments. Keywords : local scour, maximum scour depth, cohesive bed material, pier shape, pier, shape factor.

  • The results of laboratory experiments on the clear-water local scour of cohesionless bed sediment at three types of the pier shape are presented. Based on the experimental data, the relative equilibrium depth of local scour is related to the pier shape, the geometric standard deviation of the bed material, the velocity ratio and the pier Froude number. The relative local scour depths were smallest ant the round-nosed pier and remarkably reduced at the non-uniform bed sediment, comparing with those at the uniform bed material. The effect of sediment grading on the local scour reduction was discussed and compared with Raudkivi and Ettema's experiments.

  • The risk of offshore wind turbine support structures by scour has been proposed. The proposed utilize probabilities of scour depths and fragilities according to scour depth and a modification of a seismic risk analysis method. The probability distribution of scour depth was calculated using a equation which is suitable to consider marine environmental conditions such as significant wave height, significant period, and current velocity, and dynamic analysis was performed on an offshore wind turbine equipped with an suction bucket to find fragility. Then, the risk of offshore wind turbine support structure considering scour can be found by integrating the scour probability and the fragility.

  • Local phenomena around bridge piers and abutments are generally considered to be similar, nevertheless the presence of the incoming boundary layer on the side wall in the abutment case generates extra pressure gradients and consequently a more complex vortex pattern. In the literature, experimental data for bridge abutments are relatively scarce; in particular almost no data are available for the time evolution of the scour. In this work we present the results of several long duration (3 days longrightarrow5weeks) clear water scour laboratory tests around bridge abutments; the time evolution of the erosion process is analysed with respect to local and global characteristic values (maxima, volume, hole shape). In particular we analyse the effect of the constriction ratio b/B between the transversal obstacle dimension and the flume width: in many practical situations abutments (or piers) obstruct a significant portion of the channel, so that the average acceleration due to constriction is expected to increase the scour effects of the local acceleration around the obstacle. Measured values for maximum scour are poorly predicted by literature formulas. Scour depths are positively correlated with the constriction ratio, but increases are smaller than expected from literature indications. Experimental results show that models for bridge piers cannot be directly applied to abutments; in particular, time scales for the latter are significantly larger than for piers.
