  • Accurate assessment of greenhouse gas emissions is a cornerstone of every climate change response study, and reliable assessment of greenhouse gas emission data is being used as a practical basis for the entire climate change prediction and modeling studies. Essential, fundamental technologies for estimating greenhouse gas emissions include an on-site monitoring technology, an evaluation methodology of uncertainty in emission factors, and a verification technology for reductions. The closed chamber method is being commonly used to measure gas fluxes between soil-vegetation and atmosphere. This method has the advantages of being simple, easily available and economical. This study presented the technical bases of the closed chamber method for measuring methane fluxes from a rice paddy. The methane fluxes from rice paddies occupy the largest portion of a single source of greenhouse gas in the agricultural field. We reviewed the international and the domestic studies on automated chamber monitoring systems that have been developed from manually operated chambers. Based on this review, we discussed scientific concerns on chamber methods with a particular focus on quality control for improving measurement reliability of field data.

  • Understanding the concepts of health and medical practice are significant because they are the basis of health and medical policy and law. How legislators, policy makers, and the public perceive those concepts defines the direction of legislation and policy making. This study aims to show the changes of the concepts by reviewing the history of major Statutes relating to health and medicine. Alongside medicalization of human conditions and daily activities, the concepts of health and medical practice also expanded. On the other hand, as technologies of health and medicine have specialized and segmented, the large portion of public services of the past is now provided by the private sector. We argue that the actual laws and decisions by the judiciary should be responsive to social and scientific changes, which may cause the changes of the perceptions of health and medical practice. By doing so, they not only can have actual legal force but also even initiate a movement for establishing new medical policy or law.

  • The Army is constructing a training system using Miles equipment that applies the latest science and technology to carry out military training. The Miles training system is a system that uses Miles equipment to simulate the damage situation of combat personnel and equipment in the same way as an actual battlefield by conducting practiced maneuvers in the field. Through this, the training force can experience conditions similar to an actual battle. In particular, the training effects of the warriors participating in the training can be maximized by establishing an integrated system that utilizes cutting-edge science technologies, such as information communication and computer simulation. This study analyzed the effects of Miles training in the army using scientific techniques targeted at the mid-range Miles. In particular, the effect index for analyzing the training effect was derived from a literature survey and expert opinions. The weight of each effect index was calculated by applying the Swing method. The final training effect was calculated by combining the results of the survey from train-experienced people. The Miles training effect was 2.6 times more effective than previous training without using Miles, and the satisfaction rate with Miles training according to status was high through variance analysis, and the difference was statistically significant.

  • In recent years, the automobile industry has been facing a major change with the introduction of new technologies represented by autonomous driving, electrification, and digitalization. Major domestic and overseas automakers are trying to use a systematic approach to customer satisfaction through user interfaces to provide customers with a special experience and value beyond just making products with high performance. This study proposes the Kano model as a systematic and qualitative research method for satisfaction. As a case study, 17 functions of a product were sorted (3 operation functions, 7 safety functions, and 7 convenience functions). This was done by analyzing the use case and the customers' requirements for a smart trunk system. 18 new functions were derived via creative ideation codes. In addition, a scientific analysis method is proposed for product quality attributes and the strength of customer satisfaction. Using the Kano methodology, 25 functions were classified into quality attributes: 18 attractive qualities, 3 one-dimensional qualities, and 4 complex qualities, which are combinations of one-dimension qualities and must-have qualities. The functions that have one-dimensional quality and complex qualities were found to have higher customer ratings than the functions that have attractive qualities. Based on this, enterprises could effectively reduce customer complaints and enhance customer satisfaction.

  • Gene edited crops can be classified as SDN-1, SDN-2 and SDN-3 group depending on their mutation's range and the usage of donor DNA. The SDN-1 and SDN-2 crops, in particular, could be developed as 100% transgene-free, which do not contain any DNA fragment of the vector or guide RNA used for gene editing such as CRISPR Cas9 system. Therefore, there are no scientific methods available for the detection of these crops and differentiation with the one produced by conventional cross breeding techniques. Additionally, it would be impossible to properly implement the existing GMO regulation law, in particular, the national legislation for "GMO labelling". In this regard, Australia has announced that SDN-1 crops will not be subjected to the existing GMO regulation. Furthermore, Argentina and Brazil have established a new policy that GE crops with no transgene (100% transgene-free crops) should be exempted from the scope of the GMO. In addition, Japan has also announced that "an organism that has no remnants of inserted nucleic acid processed extracellularly is not subjected to the Cartagena Act". It means that SDN-2 crops can also be exempted from the scope of GMO. In this trend, in South Korea, I suggested that gene edited crops with no remnants of inserted foreign DNA fragments should be excluded from the existing GMO regulation. Thus, I expect that diverse elite crop lines should be developed by using advanced gene editing technologies

The agricultural sector has shifted from a traditional industry to a new industrial form called the 6th industry combined with various advanced technologies such as ICT and IT. Various approaches have been attempted to analyze and predict crops based on spatial information. In particular, a variety of research has been carried out recently for crop cultivation and smart farms using drones. The goal of this study was to establish an agricultural drought monitoring system using drones to produce scientific and objective indicators of drought. A soil moisture sensor was installed in the drought area and checked the actual soil moisture. The soil moisture data was used by the reference value to compare and analyze the temperature and NDVI established by drones. The soil temperature by the drone thermal image sensor and the NDVI by the drone hyperspectral was analyzed the correlation between crop condition and soil moisture in study area. To verify this, the actual soil moisture was calculated using the soil moisture measurement sensor installed in the target area and compared with the drone performance. This study using drone drought monitoring system may enhance to promote the crop data and to save time and economy.

  • The NISS (Near-infrared Imaging Spectrometer for Star formation history) onboard NEXTSat-1 was successfully launched on last December and is now under the operation phase. The capability of both imaging and spectroscopy is a unique function of the NISS. It has realized the imaging spectroscopy (R~20) with a wide field of view of $2{\times}2deg$. in a wide near-infrared range from 0.95 to $2.5{\mu}m$. The major scientific mission is to study the cosmic star formation history in the local and distant universe. It also demonstrated the space technologies related to the infrared spectro-photometry in space. The NISS is performing the imaging spectroscopic survey for local star-forming galaxies, clusters of galaxies, star-forming regions, ecliptic deep fields and so on. As an extension of the NISS, the SPEHREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) was selected as the NASA MIDEX (Medium-class Explorer) mission (PI Institute: Caltech). As an international partner, KASI will participate in the development and the science for SPHEREx. It will perform the first all-sky infrared spectro-photometric survey to probe the origin of our Universe, to explore the origin and evolution of galaxies, and to explore whether planets around other stars could harbor life. Compared to the NISS, the SPHEREx is designed to have a much wider FoV of $3.5{\times}11.3deg$. as well as wider spectral range from 0.75 to $5.0{\mu}m$. Here, we introduce the status of the two space missions.

  • The discovery of the relationship between nutrients and deficiency diseases during the 100 years from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s was a breakthrough that led to advances in the study of nutrition. The Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) were created as a quantitative standard for avoiding diseases caused by nutrient deficiency. In addition, a reductionism paradigm has become generally accepted among nutrition scholars in health and disease, which focused on the properties of individual nutrients, content in foods, cellular levels, and mechanisms of action. The reductionist paradigm worked very well for the prevention and treatment of malnutrition diseases. However, as the incidence of nutrient deficiencies decreased and that of chronic diseases increased, the nutrition goals have been changed to secure safe and adequate nutrient intake and to reduce chronic disease risks. Accordingly, Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), a set of nutrient-based reference values, were designed to replace the RDA. The revised Korean DRIs were published for 40 nutrients in 2020. However, there is still room for improvement in the reference intake levels targeted at reducing the risk of chronic disease. The reductionist approach can no longer be practical because chronic diseases are related to the interactions between multi-components in the foods and multi-targets in the body. Therefore, a second innovative leap is needed following the nutrition development breakthrough made over 100 years ago. To this end, the nutrition paradigm must evolve from reductionism to a holism approach. Cutting-edge scientific technologies, such as metabolomics, transcriptomics, microbiomics, and bioinformatics, should also be acceptable in nutrition science based on the knowledge gained from basic nutrition studies.
