한국과 미국 초등학교 교과서에 나타난 과학의 본성 비교 분석 (Comparative Analysis of the Presentation of the Nature of Science (NOS) in Korea and US Elementary Science Textbooks)

  • The national reform document, Science for All Americans (AAAS, 1990), and the Next Generation Science Standards (NRC, 2012) emphasize the importance of the nature of science in guiding science educators in accurately portraying science to students. Therefore, it is important that textbook materials convey an accurate conception of the nature of science. This study employs content analysis to examine the content of textbooks in US and Korea elementary science textbooks with regard to the four aspects of the nature of science: (a) nature of scientific knowledge; (b) nature of scientific inquiry; (c) nature of scientific thinking; and (d) nature of interactions among science, technology, and society (Chiappetta, Fillman, & Sethna, 2004). Intercoder reliability was determined by calculating Cohen's kappa (Cohen, 1960). Findings show that while US elementary science textbooks are not balanced in presenting the four aspects of the nature of science regardless of the publishing companies, the presentation of the nature of science in Korean elementary science textbooks have better balanced treatment of the four themes across the grade levels. On the other hand, both US and Korean elementary science textbooks are attempting to convey an idea of what science is by emphasizing scientific knowledge and investigation.

초등 영재학생과 일반학생들의 지구과학 영역에서 과학 글쓰기에 대한 분석 (An analysis of Scientific Writing about Earth Science Area by Gifted and Average Elementary School Students)

  • With five gifted and nine average elementary school students, this study attempted to make a comparative analysis on the characteristics of their scientific writings for earth science-related topics. The analysis found that all of the gifted students showed higher scores than the average in the writing sections of scientific nature, logical nature and creativity. Compared to the average scores, their creativity scores were far higher. By comparing and analyzing the predicates in the writings two groups wrote, I found that the gifted students used more sentences per topic than the average students. Both groups wrote the most numbers of sentences for Volcano-related topics. In the meantime, the gifted children used the least numbers of sentences for the related topics to atmospheric pollution and the average students did so for the related topics to fossils. By the analysis on the patterns of predicate, it was observed that both groups used material predicates most and verbal predicates least. As far as the second most used predicates are concerned, the gifted children used relational predicates and the average students used mental predicates.

과학기술연구자(科學技術硏究者)의 생산성영향요인(生産性影響要因)에 관한 분석(分析) (An Analysis of Factors Influencing the Productivity of Researchers in the Area of Science and Technology)

  • The performance of scientific researchers has been studied from a number of different aspects, mostly in developed countries. This paper attempted to identify salient factors influencing scientific performance at individual level in a developing country. A model describing the productivity and performance of scientific researchers was developed. Four hypotheses were derived from the model; i) the degree of diversity of a researcher will affect the degree of his scientific performance, ii) the degree of dedication will affect the degree of his performance, iii) the degree of research pressure will affect the degree of his performance, and iv) the degree of satisfaction will affect the degree of his performance. Data were collected through questionnaires responded by 48 researchers from two research organizations. The results of data analysis supported the hypotheses in part. Specifically, diversity measured by the number of research areas was related to the productivity of research reports (p<0.05); research pressure influenced the average number of research papers (p<0.05). The results of hypothesis testing of the satisfaction showed mixed directions according to the indicators. Even though the results of data analysis did not support the hypotheses unanimously, probably due to the limitation of sample size, most of the descriptive analysis indicated that the direction of hypotheses in developed countries seemed to be similar in developing country too. However, more research efforts are needed to verify the research findings of developed countries in developing countries.

Experimental and Finite Element Analysis of Free Vibration Behaviour of Graphene Oxide Incorporated Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Composite

  • In the present study, the effect of GO in damping capacity of CF/epoxy laminates was studied via free vibration analysis. The composite laminates were manufactured by using vacuum assisted resin transfer molding technique. The damping properties of the prepared hybrid composites were determined in terms of natural frequency and damping ratio in free vibration test. The foremost aspire of this investigation was to compare the vibration properties i.e. natural frequency and modal damping of the prepared composites with the numerical results. The numerical study was carried out via FEA using $ANSYS^{TM}$ workbench software. The parametric study of the numerical models was also studied considering the beam free length and the beam thickness. It was found that the incorporation of GO enhanced the damping capacity of the composite and the variation of natural frequencies in mode1varied by 2-5% compared to the experimental study.

과학잠수 인증제도의 국내 도입 필요성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Necessity of Introduction of Scientific Diver Certification System in Korea)

  • 현재 우리나라는 과학잠수가 시행되고 있지만 이에 대한 법적 근거가 없어 업무의 범위, 장비 사용, 일위대가 등의 문제로 혼란이 발생하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 혼란을 없애고 과학잠수 종사 잠수인력의 안전을 제고하기 위해 과학잠수 인증제도 도입을 제안하였다. 그리고 외국의 과학잠수 관련 법규들을 소개하였으며, 과학잠수의 업무 범위와 적용기술을 분석함으로써 과학잠수 활동에 있어서 위해 작업환경의 어려움과 고난도의 기술 필요성을 설명하였다. 끝으로 과학잠수 규정 제정 및 다이버 인증제도의 도입 필요성을 강조하고 인증제도 추진 방안을 제시하였다.

국민학생의 과학개념, 과학과 관련된 태도, 지능의 상관 관계 연구 (Correlation Analysis of Elementary School Students' Scientific Conception, Intelligence and Attitude to Science)

  • The latest researchs show that students have their own preconceptions about scientific phenomena or theory before they learn about it in school. The preconceptions exert a great influence on the teaching and learning science. The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of intelligence and attitude to science on elementary school students were sampled from 4th and 6th grade. Data were obtained by IQ test and the questionnaires on scientific conception and attitude toward science. The result was analyzed by t-test, Correlation and ANOVA in the statistical packages SPSS/PC+. The major findings of this study are as follows : 1. The mean score of scientific conception of elementary school students was 12.89. The mean score of attitude to science was 247.29. The mean score of intelligence was 109.93. 2. The correlation coefficient between scientific conception and intelligence (r=.5098)was relatively high(p<.001). The correlation coefficient between attitude to science and scientific conception(r=.2364) was low(p<.001). 3. Significant difference on science conception was found among grade levels(p<.001). Significant difference on science conception was not found between sex (p>.05). 4. The subjects were divided into 4 groups by intelligence and attitude toward science. These 4 groups show the significant difference (p<.01) in the scientific conception. The groups of high of high intelligence showed high scientific conception.

학습 차원을 강조한 초등 과학수업의 과학적 태도와 과학 학습 성취도 분석 - 5학년 '열매' 단원을 중심으로 - (The Analysis of Students' Scientific Attitude and Scienctific Achievement after the Elementary School Science Lesson Emphasizing on Dimensions of Learning -Focused on Unit 'Fruits' of 5th Grade-)

  • Dimensions of learning, based on the vast studies on teaming psychology and teaming processes, have been played an important role as one of the frameworks of curriculum and teaming strategies. Dimensions of Learning consist of 5 Dimensions, each of 'Attitudes and Perceptions', 'Acquire and Integrate Knowledge', 'Extend and Refine Knowledge', 'Use Knowledge Meaningfully', 'Habits of Mind'. And each dimension has $3\~8$ lower categories in itself, The elementary 5th grade science lesson emphasizing upon Dimensions of Learning was developed in this study. The lessons dealt with almost every lower categories of Dimensions of learning. We analysed students' scientific attitude and scientific achievement quantitatively after the lesson emphasized upon Dimensions of Learning in comparison with typical lesson laying stress on teachers' guides. The results are as follows; Students' scientific attitude was significantly changed after the lesson emphasized upon Dimensions of Learning. The willingness, positiveness, straightforwardness, and openness of lower categories of students' scientific attitude were more significantly changed especially. But students' scientific achievement was not significantly changed after the lesson emphasized upon Dimensions of Learning.

예비초등교사의 자유 탐구 활동에서 나타나는 추론 복잡성 분석 (Analysis on the Complexity of Scientific Reasoning during Pre-service Elementary School Teachers' Open-Inquiry Activities)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the complexity of scientific reasoning during open inquiry activities of pre-service elementary school teachers. In this study, 6 pre-service elementary teachers who participated in open-inquiry activities were selected. The data of scientific reasoning during their inquiry process was collected from the video recording of reporting about inquiry process and results, their reports and researcher's notetaking. CSRI Matrix (Dolan & Grady, 2010) was used to analyze the complexity of participants' scientific reasoning. The result showed that the degree of the complexity of their scientific reasoning varied in participants. Particularly the low degree of the complexity of scientific reasoning presented in posing preliminary hypotheses, providing suggestions for future research, communicating and defending finding. Also, The more pre-service teachers' epistemology of inquiry are similar to that of scientists, the more complex scientific reasoning represents. This results suggest that teachers should impress on students the importance of doing the precedent study and providing suggestions for future research, and provide a place for communicating and defending findings.

과학영재 선발을 위한 선발문항 분석: 서울대학교 과학영재센터 중학교 심화과정의 화학영역 중심 (Analysis of Selection Items Test for Selecting Scientifically Gifted Students in Chemistry Class)

  • 본 연구에서는 과학 영재성 구성요인과 고전 검사이론을 이용하여 중학교 과학영재센터 화학반 선발에 사용된 선발문항을 분석하였다. 대부분의 문항이 과학영재성의 구성요인 중 두 가지 이상을 복합적으로 측정하는 문항이었으며, 중학교 수준의 과학지식을 적용하여 해결하도록 하였다. 과학 영재성의 구성요소의 하위요소를 분석 한 결과에서 창의성 영역에서는 유창성과 독창성이 과학탐구 능력에서는 문제발견 및 가설설정, 실험설계, 자료해석에 평가항목이 집중되어 있었으며 결론도출 및 일반화에 해당하는 요소는 상대적으로 부족하였다. 각 유형과 총점과의 상관분석에서 과학지식과 결부되어 과학 탐구능력을 측정하는 문항의 유형이 총점을 잘 설명하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 문항 난이도는 다소 높고, 문항 변별도는 적절하였다. 이로부터 창의성과 과학탐구의 다양한 구성요소를 측정할 수 있는 문항을 균형 있게 안배해야 하며, 난이도의 조절이 필요한 것으로 나타났다.

Impact of Caspase-8 (CASP8) -652 6N Del and D302H Polymorphisms on Prostate Cancer in Different Ethnic Groups

  • Background: Despite evidence suggesting roles for caspase-8 (CASP8) -652 6N del and D302H polymorphisms in prostate cancer (PCa), the association of these polymorphisms with PCa risk remains inconclusive. Therefore, a meta-analysis was performed to more precisely estimate the association of CASP8 -652 6N del and D302H polymorphisms with PCa susceptibility. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify all case-control studies of CASP8 D302H and -652 6N del polymorphisms and PCa risk. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the strength of the association and the precision of the estimate, respectively. Results: Nine -625 6N del studies and 4 D302H studies were included. CASP8 -652 6N del and D302H polymorphisms were not significantly associated with PCa risk in the overall analyses. However, in the subgroup analysis stratified by ethnicity, -625 6N del was significantly associated with PCa risk in the East Asian and Indian populations under the recessive model. Furthermore, the subgroup analysis strongly suggested that D302H was associated with lower PCa risk in the Non-Indian population under the dominant model. Conclusions: In our meta-analysis, ethnic-specific differences were evident in the association of CASP8-625 6N del and D302H polymorphisms with PCa risk.
