  • The purpose of this study is to investigate discrepant Earth Science terms in high school curriculums and to explore the alternative to those terms. In this study, we defined discrepant terms as different terms which had the same meaning in Earth Science textbooks. Discrepant terms were compared with terms in references and precedent studies, and the preference by 284 of teachers and students was investigated. The results of this study are as follows: A number of discrepant terms were found in references as well as high school textbooks. Participants preferred terms that are more understandable, were learned previously, and were correct to loanword orthography. As for the cases of discrepant terms caused by different notation of proper nouns or different references and background knowledge, the alternative could be explored by the rule of loanword orthography or the journal publications. In conclusion, confusion may be reduced by utilizing common terms that are both based on authorized theory and easy to convey the meaning.

  • Correct comprehension of the scientific terms is the bottom of understanding the general concepts contained is them. Therefore a study is required to analyze whether the students correctly understand the scientific terms. The associative method was used to evaluate the comprehensibility of the terms. The scientific terms in this study are selected in the textbook of science in the junior high school were selected. The frequency of the same associative word responsed and the frequency of no response from the selected students for given scientific terms were measured for 9 different groups. The terms which are not used in the daily life, especially for the terms with chinese character or abstract terms turn out to be difficult for the students to understand. It is purposed that the instructor should remember the importance of understanding the scientific term and carefully explain them to the science class.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the terms of astronomy area used in six convergence science textbooks by 2009 curriculum revision. The results of this study were following; the first, the contents about astronomy occupied about 18.6% account of science contents. There were the terms which all textbooks used, but some terms were not used other text book, and the others were used in only one textbook. And the second, there were some terms of having certain concept which had described differently. It was suggested that it was necessary to the effort to prevent to descript same meaning terms differently and to make guideline for the depth and width of the terms.

  • We propose a new query expansion method in the extended Boolean model that improves precision without degrading recall. For improving precision, our method promotes the ranks of documents having more query terms since users typically prefer such documents. The proposed method consists of the following three steps: (1) expanding the query by adding new terms related to each term of the query, (2) further expanding the query by adding augmented terms, which are conjunctions of the terms, (3) assigning a weight on each term so that augmented terms have higher weights than the other terms. We conduct extensive experiments to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the proposed method improves precision by up to 102% for the TREC-6 data compared with the existing query expansion method using a thesaurus proposed by Kwon et al.

  • This study was carried out to analyze terms in primary science textbooks. The results of the research are as follows. 1. The higher-grade science textbooks use more types of categories and less definitions for terms. Only 14% of definitions for terms are showed in textbooks, and no more than 0.4~0.6 definitions shows the shortage of definitions for terms in one class content. 2. The definitions by contract, which forms 68%, was the highest in elementary science textbooks. And the dictionary definitions, which are 62%, was the highest in experiment-observation textbooks. 3. The most used type of definitions is the way which is used for a case or a indicating methods, and its rate is increasing steadily. And its rate was 76% of the whole of terms. 4. Terms used in energy field are few as compared with terms of other fields. Each field has completely different ways of defining terms and presenting content in textbooks to other fields.

  • Language skills in science education seem to have a great impact on student achievement. Most of the language skills affecting students' science learning can be accounted for an understanding of scientific terms. The ultimate goal of this study is selecting and grading the scientific terms for science education. As a basic research, we investigated scientific terms contained in science textbooks, because they are the most basic and selected terminologies. As a result of investigation of scientific terms in physics units of middle school science textbooks, we made a list of 556 scientific terms by grade level. This includes 249 words for grade 7, 170 words for grade 8, and 137 words for grade 9.

  • The purpose of this study is to make a list of scientific terms to decrease students' difficulties of science learning. By using inductive method, database has established from elementary school science textbooks and laboratory observation books. All terms from physics area of science textbooks and laboratory observation books at the levels of grade 3 to 6 were analyzed based on the Standard Korean Dictionary (1999) and Book of Physics Terminology (2005). As a result, we made a list of 204 scientific terms by grade level. Those were 51 words for grade 3, 55 words for grade 4, 56 words for grade 5, and 42 words for grade 6. And there were some incongruities among textbooks, the Standard Korean Dictionary and the Book of Physics Terminology.

  • In this study, the meteorology terms in the geography text books of North Korea which includes all of the meteorology educational contents in secondary school curriculum are compared with those in the earth science text books in South Korea. Forty science terms which are the same meaning but composed of different words are picked up to investigate the degree for 89 high school students in Chonnam province to perceive the meanings correctly. High school students' perceptions is on the average 30% higher in terminology of South Korea textbooks than in those of North Korea. But, students' perceptions on 9 North Korean terms is rather higher compared to South Korean terms. Twenty six (83.9%) terms which are difficult for high school students to perceive correct meanings are those lately composed of North Korean native words. Most of meteorology terms in South Korean textbooks are derived from the Chinese characters or imported from foreign language terms are easier for high school students to perceive correct meanings than those of North Korean terms derived from North Korean native language.

  • We compared and analyzed the astronomy terms currently used by astronomers in the two Koreas to promote inter-Korean astronomy cooperation. We analyzed a total of 2716 pairs of terms common in both Koreas glossaries, using the astronomical terminology contained in the South Korean source, the 'Terminology of Astronomy', and the North Korean source, 'Mirror 2.0'. For each pair of terms, their morphological features and meanings were compared. We categorized into 11 groups for comparison of astronomical terms. We found that most of the terms are used similarly in the two Koreas. About 47% of the total is similar in form. Although terms are different, meanings communicate about 37% of the total. As a result, similar terms used by the two Koreas correspond to about 85% of the total. However, 15% of terms are difficult to understand because they have different forms or meanings such as diffraction (회절/에돌이), flare (플레어/요반) etc. Further research on terms that are used differently by the two Koreas, and the conversion of appropriate terms through mutual understanding should be made in the future.

  • A hyperbolic orbit is expanded in terms of F analogous to the eccentric anomaly of an elliptical orbit: ${\tau}^p\;sinq{\upsilon}\;and\;{\tau}^p\;cosq{\upsilon}$ are expressed in terms of F. The true anomaly ${\upsilon}$ is expressed in terms of F, and F in terms of ${\upsilon}$.
