The purpose of this study was to examine philosophical views on science of two influential curriculum documents, AAAS' s Benchmarks for Scientific Literacy (Benchmark) and NRC's National Science Education Standards (Standard), and to get educational implications about a desired philosophical view on science at a school science level. In order to determine the philosophical views on science explicitly suggested in the documents, Soh's Philosophical Perspectives Probe (PPP) was used as a framework for analysis. Forty preservice teachers reviewed the documents, extracting paragraphs with which statements of the PPP' s questions would agree. The results of the study were as follows: First, the Benchmark's philosophical view on science corresponds to the borderline between inductivism and eclecticism, or eclecticism close to falsificationism. The philosophical positions by the PPP' s themes are very different. Second, the Standard's philosophical position on science corresponds to inductivism close to eclecticism. Its philosophical position by the themes of the PPP is very different like the Benchmark. These results indicate that philosophical positions of the documents are more complex than popular conceptions would have it. That is to say, the results suggest that the science curriculum documents hold not only a contemporary philosophical view on science but also a traditional view on science, and that the philosophical positions on science are different from each other by documents and even by the PPP's themes in the same document. The results suggest that the philosophical views on science in school science contexts need to be adjusted and presented to K-12 students according to topics related to philosophy of science.

The purpose of this study was to compare the science philosophical views and instruction strategies for open-inquiry between teachers of science-gifted and teachers of general students. The subjects were 45 teachers of science-gifted and 45 teachers of general students. The major results of this study were as follows: First, there was no differences on the science philosophical views between teachers of science-gifted and teachers of general students by chi-square tests (p<.05). Second, there were no differences on how task assignments, how to guide exploration data, and how to write reports between teachers of science-gifted and teachers of general students (p<.05). But there was meaningful differences on how to proceed with exploration activities between teachers of science-gifted and teachers of general students (p<.05). It is implied that this the results of this investigation will help the focus of future efforts to promote more adequate the science philosophical views and instruction strategies for open-inquiry in teachers of science-gifted.

The purpose of this study was to identify the relation between preservice teachers' philosophical views on science and types of responses to alternative hypotheses. To identify preservice teachers' philosophical views on science, the extraterrestrial impact theory and the volcano-greenhouse theory, alternative hypotheses related to dinosaur extinction were administered to 37 elementary preservice teachers and 52 secondary preservice teachers. Subjects were required to write down their ideas before and after reading the alternative hypotheses, and then the dimensions of responses to initial ideas were analyzed. To analyze, Soh's Philosophical Perspectives Prove(PPP) was used. The results of this study were as follows: (a) elementary and secondary preservice teachers' philosophical views on science corresponds to eclecticism, (b) the main types of responses were partial theory change in elementary preservice teachers and rejection in secondary preservice teachers, (c) preservice teachers' philosophical views on science and types of responses were eclecticism-partial theory change in elementary preservice teachers and eclecticism-rejection in secondary preservice teachers.
The purpose of this study was to find out how to be pursued elementary teachers' science instruction according to their understanding toward science. Sixty elementary teachers were involved in the questionnaire, investigating understanding on the nature of science and the science teaching. Two elementary teachers' science classes are observed. Their instructional objectives were analyzed. And their understanding toward science was measured. Teacher A had consistent modern philosophical views of science on the nature of science and science teaching, and teacher B had not consistency Klopfer's science educational objectives category was used to analyse instructional objective. The ideal proportions of the instructional objectives of the observed classes were established from science education specialist group. You ideality index was calculated. You ideality index indicate how far from the ideal proportions of the instructional objectives the observed instruction is. Relative proportions of instructional objectives appeared in science classes were compared with ideal instructional objectives. Instructional objectives containing the modem views appearing classes observed were compared according to teachers' understanding toward science. As results, teachers' understanding toward science showed lack of consistency, which is consisted of modern philosophical view of science on science teaching: modem and classical philosophical view of science on nature of science. Teacher A's instruction was approached more closely to the ideal proportions of the instructional objectives, showing fewer You ideality index. Instructional objectives containing the modern views are more appeared and closer to ideal proportions in teacher A's classes than in teacher B's. A teacher having modern understanding on nature of science would instruct science with modern scientific philosophical perspectives. Therefore teacher preparation programs should include more contents about modern philosophical understanding on the nature of science.
Purpose - This study sought to discuss definitions of organizational culture taking into consideration different views, and the historical and philosophical elements of organizational culture. Research Design, Data, and Methodology - This paper is a relatively conceptual study that has attempted to define organizational culture, a topic that has been debated among scholars and practitioners. Various studies in the literature related to organizational culture have been reviewed in an effort to reduce the complexities and ambiguities in definitions of organizational culture. Results -This study summarized and synthesized different studies related to organizational culture, and identified the main streams for defining organizational culture as being from the historical and philosophical elements of organizational culture. Conclusions -The concept of organizational culture continues to be an important factor affecting organizational effectiveness and initiating organizational development. However, the definition of organizational culture has not been well-established. In this sense, this paper seems to be significant and meaningful as it attempts to define organizational culture from different perspectives.

The purpose of this study was to examine Korean preservice science teachers' understanding of the nature of science (NOS). Thirty-one Korean preservice teachers were given an open-ended questionnaire about their understanding of NOS. The Korean preservice teachers' responses were categorized according to pattern and theme. These findings will provide information to aid in the development of curriculum and instruction to improve preservice teachers' understanding of NOS. Compared to in previous studies, Korean preservice teachers demonstrated various philosophical stances that have been suggested by philosophers of science. In addition, they were more likely to connect science to human endeavors and social needs. These results were interpreted in relation to the influence of the science methods course, secondary science curriculum, and the traditional cultural view.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of global science literacy-oriented instruction on students' views of the nature of science. The participants were 65 male students in 8th grade, and they were taught for five weeks about the Unit of "Earth and Star" that was designed based on global science literacy. Survey was conducted to determine the students' views of the nature of science before and after the instruction. Results revealed that it was hard to change students' views of the nature of science during the short period of time; however, in the sociological aspect, the students acquired relatively more improved students' views of the nature of science than the other aspects including philosophical, psychological, and historical aspects.
This study investigated science gifted middle school students' philosophical views on scientific knowledge, and the effects of discussing and reading related to the knowledge. Ten eighth-graders in a science gifted class participated in this study. The results can be summarized as follows: 1, At the beginning, the students had one of six positions: (a) relativism (n = 2); (b) falsificationism (n = 2); (c) borderline between relativism and eclecticism (n = 1); (d) borderline between falsificationism and eclecticism (n = 3); (e) borderline among relativism, falsificationism, and eclecticism (n = 1); and (f) borderline inductivism and eclecticism (n = 1). This result indicated that most students had on almost modern philosophical view of scientific knowledge. 2, Some students, who had chosen the item of inductivism in some questions of the instrument at the beginning, maintained their selection despite discussions and readings related to scientific knowledge. The data were examples which indicated the difficulty of changing from a traditional view to a modern view of scientific knowledge.

This study was to investigate high school students' philosophical views on science and positions of constructivists; Popper, Lakatos, Toulmin, and Kuhn. The results of this study were as follows: First, most students had the eclectic position(69%): similar percentages in sex(male 67%, female 75%), stream(liberal art 72%, science 74%), and of having experience on reading books or magazines related to the philosophy of science(ever 78%, never 64%). Second, in analysis of ANDVA of science philosphical perspectives by experience of reading books, magazines, and matters related to the philosophy of science, significant difference was revealed(p<.01). Students who had ever heard of or read about the philosophy of science were tend to have Empiricism. Third, ANDVA analysis of constructivist philosphical perspectives showed that male students were nearer to Kuhn's position than female(p<.05) and students in science stream were closer to Popper than in liberal art(p<.05). And male students in science party showed a great tendency to consent Popper's perspective(p<.01). This result seems to suggest that male students tended to think social aspects more deeply than female and held Kuhn's position.
