The purpose of this study is to look into self-concept and teaching anxiety of elementary school teachers about inquiry instruction in science class, and investigate correlations among them. For this study, the survey was carried out on 338 elementary school teachers, and the interview was conducted with 5 of them. The results of this study are as follows; Self-concept of elementary school teachers about inquiry instruction in science class was more positive than usual. And the teachers who were male, older and majored in science education showed more affirmative self-concept about inquiry instruction in science class. Teaching anxiety of elementary school teachers about inquiry instruction in science class was less than usual. And the teachers who were male, older and majored in science education showed less teaching anxiety about inquiry instruction in science class. The correlation of self-concept and teaching anxiety of elementary school teachers about inquiry instruction in science class was an negative interrelation. This presents that the teachers, who have more positive self-concept about inquiry instruction in science class, have less teaching anxiety than those who have more negative one. Consequently, teacher training and retraining programs should be developed and conducted by grasping teachers' self-concept and their anxiety, to reduce anxiety about inquiry instruction in science class.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate an appropriate instructional model in order to remedy students' misconception. As hypotheses of this study, three instructional models, cognitive conflicting, hypothesis testing, and learning cycle models, on biological 'osmosis' concept were tested in 176 high school students. Results of the present study are as follows: 1. All groups used one of three instructional models showed a statistically significant improvement in conceptual change on the 'osmosis' concept between before and after the instruction. In addition, the three hypothesized instructional models were more effective in conceptual change than a traditional expository instruction. 2. There was a statistically significant difference among three experimental groups. Cognitive conflicting model and hypothesis testing model was more effective than learning cycle models. 3. An interviewing after instruction showed that students who had scientific concept on the 'osmosis' through the instruction could effectively apply the concept to other context more than students who had no scientific concept through instruction. The present study indicated that instructional model play an important role on students' conceptual change in science classroom. According to the result of this study, the instruction emphasizing students' active participation in class and scientific reasoning process is more appropriate to remedy misconception that the instruction using students' passive participation in class and expository teaching procedure. This study also indicated that students' concept acquired through instruction is one of important factors to apply it to other context.
This study is intended to develop plant inquiry instruction using Rapid-cycling Brassica rapa (RcBr) whose life cycle is relatively short, and to apply it to the elementary science instruction of the 4th grader and examine their plant concept, science inquiry skills and science-related attitudes. The materials were consisted of laboratory manuals for the students as well as teachers' guide. By observing the life cycle of RcBr, students can experience the conceptual learning of the plant's life cycle. In addition, this study investigated the cause of change in science inquiry skills and science-related attitudes by interviewing 12 students. It has shown that plant inquiry instruction using RcBr has meaningful effects on students' understanding of the plant concept, improving students' science inquiry skills, and changing students' science-related attitudes. Students who showed improvement in science inquiry skills were able to answer questions regarding science knowledge correctly. And students whose science related attitudes were improved had a positive attitude on cultivating RcBr. Students told that RcBr was an interesting and good material to inquire plant. Because of its small size and its relatively short life cycle of RcBR, it should be a desirable plant material for the inquiry instruction which can give rise to useful and meaningful results for the elementary school students.

This study investigated the influences of applying the Cognitive Conflict Process Model (the Procedural Teaching Model using Cognitive Conflict Strategy: Kwon, 1989) upon students' achievement and attitudes in a middle school science concept instruction. For the treatment group, science instruction to apply the Cognitive Conflict Process Model was used. For the control group, traditional instruction was used. Prior to instruction, students' pre-conceptions test and attitudes test related to the science were administered. After instruction, the above two tests and the regular examinations were measured. Also students' perceptions of their teacher's new teaching style was investigated by questionnaire. But, above all, the main purpose of this study was to investigate the principal accompanying matters of general application of the teaching model to science concept instruction rather than conceptual and attitudinal change. Therefore, this study identified necessary conditions of applying the teaching model to science instruction.

In this study, we investigated the effects of coteaching science instruction in elementary science-gifted education upon students' concept application ability and their perception of the instruction. Fifth graders (N=37) from two science-gifted classes in two elementary schools were selected and assigned to control (n=19) and coteaching instruction (CI, n=18) groups. Two teachers prepared, executed, and evaluated together the instructions for science-gifted elementary students during twelve classes in the CI group, and so did one teacher with the same programs in the control group. After the instructions, the students in the two groups were administered with a test of concept application ability. All students in the CI group were also administered with a questionnaire on the perception of the instruction and were deeply interviewed. The results revealed that the scores of those in the CI group were significantly higher than those in the control group in the test on concept application ability. Many students in the CI group perceived the coteaching science instruction positively upon verbal interaction, class management, and cognitive/affective aspects. However, some of them also pointed a few disadvantages of the instruction. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of utilizing concept maps in a rock-related unit. To do this, two groups composed of 73 sixth grade students engaged in this study. One group (experimental group) participated in utilizing concept maps in the unit, the other (control group) took part in traditional instruction in the same unit. The results of this study are as follows, after seventeen sessions: First, the achievement between the two groups showed significant difference. It indicates that utilizing concept maps as an instructional method is effective. Second, in the examination of the experimental group's attitudes toward concept maps, the students showed more affirmative responses on cognitive items than on affective items. Third, the students showed that they have difficulty in the method and the procedure of drawing up the concept maps. It indicates that the method and the procedure are sufficiently learned before instruction begins.

study investigated the effect of an instruction using generating analogy on scientific conceptual understanding, science learning motivation, attitude toward science instruction, and perception of instruction. Two classes of seventh graders at a middle school in Seoul were randomly assigned to the treatment group and the control group, and they were taught about the motion of molecules for 5 class hours. The instruction for treatment group was developed based on the Glynns Teaching-With-Analogy model. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the scores of the treatment group were significantly higher than those of the control group in the conception test. However, there was no significant difference between two groups in the science learning motivation test and the test on the attitude toward science instruction. Survey results on the students perception of instruction showed that generating analogy was hard for the greater part of students, and finding appropriate analog was the most difficult work. Educational implications are discussed.

The purpose of this study is to analyze elementary school students' pre-concept of electromagnet and to investigate effects of instruction through social interactions on conceptual changes of the electromagnet. For the purpose, 108 elementary school students of 3 classes were selected from the 6th grade. They were divided into the control group I, control group II and experimental group. The control group I was treated through traditional instruction on the basis of text book. The control group II was instructed with a modified version of the textbook to help them better understand the concept of electromagnet. The experimental group was treated through instruction on the basis of the above modified version of the text book and social interactions. Conceptual changes on electromagnet before and after the treatment were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed using the identical test. The students' styles of social interaction were qualitatively analyzed with tape records of their discussions and work sheets. Effects of instruction through social interactions based on radical constructivism on the 6th-grade elementary school students' concept of electromagnet were examined here. The results were described as follows. Firstly, after the treatment, the experimental group was statistically significantly higher in mean values of conceptual understanding and academic achievement than both the control group I and II. Secondly, styles of social interaction in the three sub-groups of the experimental group were qualitatively analyzed, among the threes, high- and medium-level sub-groups were higher in the frequency of linguistic social interaction than the low-level sub-group. Those students who were excellent in communication skills actively participated in linguistic social interactions. In discussions among the three sub-groups, students of the high- and medium-level sub-groups provided explanations or information while those of the other sub-group sometimes were passive by just listening, but in large actively participated in communication. In conclusion, instruction through social interactions was effectively changed in the 6th-grade elementary school students' concept of electromagnet.
The purposes of this study is to identify the misconceptions on atmospheric pressure and to investigate the effect of conceptual change of the cognitive conflict teaching models. The subjects are 184 students in girls' high school and divided into the controlled and test group. Before instruction on atmospheric pressure concept, their concept types were identified and their conceptual changes were compared after instruction by the traditional and the cognitive conflict teaching models. The results of this study are as follows; 1 ) The students' understanding level on the atmospheric pressure was low before instruction and they had some misconceptions. But the concept levels related to their everyday life experieces and memorized concept were high. 2) The cognitive conflict teaching model were more effective than the traditional teaching model in the formation of atmospheric pressure concept. 3) Though there were some differences among the test items, the cognitive conflict teaching model was identified to be more effective than the traditional teaching model in terms of the durability of atmospheric pressure concept.

The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of student-centered instruction using analogies for middle school students' learning of the photosynthesis concept. Participants in this study were 8th grade students at a middle school in Seoul (N=132). The students were divided into two groups for implementation. In the experimental group the teaching materials containing analogies were used while the contents of a science textbook were taught in the control group. The results of this study indicated that student-centered instruction using analogies was more effective than traditional methods of instruction for understanding photosynthesis concepts and the students' attitude toward the science class. Analogies were also found to contribute to developing an understanding of the photosynthesis concept through activating students' prior knowledge, focusing on structural features of the target concept and elaborating knowledge. In addition, analogies play an important role in activating small group discussions, improving students' meta-cognitive skills, and revealing and revising of misconceptions about photosynthesis. Moreover, analogies can help improve students' interests and self-efficiency in science classes.
